Historic Amsterdam fort will mark St. Patrick's Day with 18th century style party

AMSTERDAM -- A Mohawk Valley historic site plans to throw a St. Patrick's Day party, 18th-century style.

The Old Fort Johnson National Historic Landmark is presenting a program of 18th-century Irish music Saturday afternoon -- St. Patrick's Day -- at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam.

Old Fort Johnson, just west of Amsterdam, was the Mohawk River homestead of Sir William Johnson, Britain's superintendent of Indian affairs during the Colonial era. Johnson was born in Ireland and brought Irish music and culture to the Mohawk Valley.

Curators at the historic site say St. Patrick's was Johnson's favorite holiday, and he was known to celebrate the day with plenty of Irish music and drink.

A group will play traditional Irish music from the 1700s during Saturday's event, a fundraiser for ongoing repairs at flood-damaged Old Fort Johnson.
