MANILA, Philippines –- Is this the end of the road for former Kapamilya talent Chris Cayzer on “The X Factor Australia”?
On Monday’s episode of the Australian version of the hit talent search, Cayzer found out that his category, the Over-25s, will be mentored by “Australian Idol” winner Guy Sebastian.
Boyzone’s Ronan Keating was given the groups, former Spice Girl Mel B will handle the boys and Natalie Bassingthwaighte will mentor the girls.
It will be recalled that Sebastian was the only one who voted against Cayzer during the audition rounds, even if the Fil-Australian received a standing ovation from Mel B for his rendition of Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.”
Sebastian admitted he wasn't "blown away" by Cayzer's audition. "I like you but if you want to be a superstar, you would have to grow a lot," he said at the time.
During the group round during Super Bootcamp, when Cayzer’s ensemble was given New Radical's "You Get What You Give," Sebastian was still unimpressed.
“I didn't get Chris. There's a certain ceiling and Chris can't get past it. He doesn't have the X factor,” Sebastian said during the judges' huddle.
"It's always been awkward when you say to somebody and they end up in your category. But for the person, it's harder for them because they have to prove me wrong," Sebastian said on Monday’s episode, where the solo contestants headed for New York to perform for the special celebrity judges.
(The group contestants, meanwhile, left for London to meet with boy band One Direction.)
Before the Cayzer and the five other Over-25 contestants -- Nathaniel Willemse, Justin Standley, Danielle Blakey, Rob Vegas and Samantha Jade -- perform before guest mentor Alicia Keys, Sebastian gave them some last-minute advice.
"It just feels a bit two step," he told Cayzer after he sang Elton John's "Tiny Dancer." "We have to find a way to make that song sexy and young and Chris Cayzer."
On Tuesday's episode, Cayzer did just that. As soon as he entered the room with Sebastian and Keys seated on the couch, the Fil-Australian turned on the charm.
"She's a beautiful woman. Oh my goodness," he gushed.
"He's charming," Sebastian warned Keys.
After Cayzer's performance, Sebastian seemed pleased. "Really nice," he told his ward.
"He really listened to me," Sebastian told Keys after the contestant stepped out of the room. "Yesterday, he was kinda doing the two step and there was nothing sexy about it. whereas that time, he was giving you the eye."
"He was definitely giving me the eye," Keys said laughing.
"Did you feel it? The eye?" Sebastian asked.
"I'm married you know. I only feel the eye from one man," Keys said.
Cayzer was also happy about the outcome.
"I smiled, and then she smiled, and Guy smiled," he said.
Keys will help Sebastian pick the three contestants for the Top 12, which will be announced on Wednesday's episode.
