Icelander stalls So in Reykjavik Chess Open

MANILA – After streaking for three straight games, Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So was forced to a draw by his Icelander opponent in the fourth round of the 28th Reykjavik Open chess in Iceland on Friday.

So split the point with International Master (IM) Hjorvar Steinn Gretarsson of Iceland to improve his total to 3.5 points.

The Filipino ace is now tied at fifth with GM Ivan Cheparinov of Bulgaria, GM Anish Giri of the Netherland, GM Bartosz Socko of Poland, GM Vladimir Baklan of Ukraine, GM Gawain Jones of England, GM Stefan Kristjansson and Gretarsso of Iceland, GM Alexander Ipatov of Turkey, Woman Grand master (WGM) M Guo Qi and IM Wei Yi of China.

So, the Philippines’ reigning top player, will next face Wei in the fifth round.
