MANILA, Philippines – People close to Manny Pacquiao have reportedly been reaching out to the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to arrange a possible fight in Dubai.
According to retired boxer Jeff Mayweather, uncle of the unbeaten American boxer, Pacquiao’s camp has been asking for his help to set up the elusive superfight.
"I've been contacted by Manny's people, personally and now they want the fight,” said the elder Mayweather in Pro Boxing.
Pacquiao is looking to rebound from his sixth round knockout defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez.
Marquez appears reluctant to give Pacquiao another rematch, prompting the Filipino boxer to look for an alternative opponent.
Mayweather believes Pacquiao’s camp is pressed on arranging the super fight with Floyd, while it remains “marketable.”
"They know that if it doesn't happen now it won't be worth anything. I got text messages from his advisor so it's a situation where I will talk to Floyd to see if that fight can potentially be made," he said.
Mayweather added that Pacquiao can no longer demand a hefty fight purse from Floyd especially after the Filipino’s KO loss.
"They don't have a position so they would either need to take what was offered or there wouldn't be a fight.”
Since Pacquiao no longer wants to fight in the US because of high taxes, Mayweather believes they could stage the bout in the Middle East.
“More than likely it would probably be Dubai, there is a whole load more money in Dubai so the chances are it would probably be there."
Floyd earlier tweeted that negotiations are ongoing for his ring return on May 4.
He claimed that IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander is the front runner among his possible opponents.
