Donaire recovering from shoulder surgery

MANILA, Philippines – Former world super bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire is recovering well after undergoing surgery for his injured right shoulder last Friday at the Seton Medical Center.

Donaire posted a series of pictures on his official Facebook and Twitter accounts showing him before and after surgery.

The procedure, conducted by Dr. Shabi Kahn, fixed two tears and a bone spur on the boxer's right shoulder.

"Surgery went well. Want to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes," Donaire posted on his Facebook account. "I'll be resting up for a bit but will come back strong."

Donaire is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux, his first loss in 12 years. He revealed after the fight that he fought with a shoulder injury that would require surgery.

In an interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, Donaire said he plans to undergo rehab for eight weeks before working out again.

"I want to be 100% going into the ring the next time around," he said.

As for his next fight, Donaire's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, is planning to pit "The Filipino Flash" against former featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez later this year.

"If they make that happen, that would be good, but first things first, I need to heal up," Donaire said.
