After beating Bedak, Donaire calls out Frampton, Rigo

MANILA, Philippines – World super bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire does not want to slow down at all, following a quick victory over Hungary's Zsolt Bedak in Cebu City last Saturday night.

Fighting in the searing Cebu heat, Donaire unleashed his patented left hook on Bedak, bloodying his Hungarian foe en route to a third round stoppage – and his fourth win in a row since getting knocked out by Nicholas Walters in 2014.

After expressing his gratitude, in fluent Bisaya, to the huge crowd that cheered on his every punch, Donaire called out his potential opponents – Northern Ireland's Carl Frampton and unbeaten Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux.

"Kailangan ko pang mas maayos pa 'yung training ko at 'yung strategy ko, pero andoon sila Frampton and Rigondeaux," Donaire said. "Reding-ready na ako sa kanila."

"Bisaya ako, Pilipino ako – hindi ako matatakot kahit sino diyan," he declared.

The 29-year-old Frampton has an unbeaten record of 22-0, with 14 wins coming by knockout. Most recently, he defeated Scott Quig via split decision in February to retain his IBF belt and claim the vacant WBA super bantamweight title.

It remains to be seen if Donaire will get his wish to fight Frampton, as the Irishman is set to move up to featherweight where will challenge Leo Santa Cruz.

Donaire has long campaigned for a rematch against Rigondeaux, who defeated him in April 2013, ending his 29-bout winning streak.

Since beating Donaire, Rigondeaux has racked up four more victories and currently holds the WBC international super bantamweight title as well as the lineal super bantamweight belts.

Donaire is also hoping that he can get to fight his next bout in Cebu once more.

"Di ko akalain na ganitong karaming tao," he said. "Kaya nagpapasalamat ako sa kanila ng husto. Na-feel ko talaga ang pressure noong palabas ako – naka-smile ako pare ayoko makita ang lahat ng tao, kasi baka ma-pressure ako."

"Naka-look down lang ako, kasi gusto ko talagang manalo sa laban na ito," he added.

The fight in Cebu marks the second time in his last four matches that Donaire has fought at home; back in March 2015, he fought and stopped Brazil's William Prado in the second round of their fight at the Araneta Coliseum.

Donaire defeats Settoul via TKO

Nonito ''The Filipino Flash'' Donaire defeats French boxer Anthony Settoul in their super bantamweight fight.

It was an easy win for Donaire via TKO, with the fight ending in just the second round.

Donaire has been hoping for a win so he could get a world title fight before the year ends. But he says, he's open to fight anyone who's ready for him.

Donaire's non-title fight will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday morning.

Donaire demolishes Frenchman in 2 rounds

Nonito ''The Filipino Flash'' Donaire made short work of his French opponent, stopping Anthony Settoul in just two rounds of their 10-round bout at the Cotai Arena in Macau Saturday.

The former five-division champion showed up with a much improved boxing style, utilizing right straights and body shots instead of just relying on his devastating left hook.

This allowed Donaire to knock down Settoul twice in the first round and one last time during the second stanza.

In the first round, the Filipino Flash timed the Frenchman with a short stab to the liver while dodging Settoul's looping shots. The painful shot to the body forced Settoul to take a knee, while referee Danrex Tapdasan was giving him the mandatory count.

The French boxer was able to stand up but was again met with another combination capped with another left hook to the body. This led to Settoul's second knockdown.

In the third round, Donaire smashed Settoul with a right straight that decked the Frenchman. Settoul stood up on wobbly knees, forcing his corner to throw in the towel.

Tapdasan halted the fight at 1:41 of the second round.

''We did well here. Hopefully you guys enjoyed the fight,'' said Donaire while addressing the crowd at the Cotai Arena.

The Filipino Flash said he trained hard to improve his other punches so he would not rely too much on his left hook.

''We worked really hard for it. We did everything with the body shots, set up the punches and of course the counter punches,'' said Donaire.

''Not everybody's gonna look just for the left hook now. I have more than one weapon and that's everything else,'' added the beaming Filipino-American.

After KO win, Walters thanks 'great champion' Donaire

Hard-hitting Jamaican Nicholas Walters was gracious in victory after his stunning sixth-round knockout of Nonito Donaire, as he profusely thanked "The Filipino Flash" for giving him a chance to fight.

Walters connected on an overhand right with seconds to go in the sixth round that flattened Donaire, The win was the Jamaican's 25th straight, and his 21st victory by knockout.

"I enjoyed the fight," the charismatic Walters said in a post-fight interview. "I thank him for giving me this opportunity of fighting one of the best in the world, for giving me the opportunity to display my talent on HBO and to the world."

Walters said he prepared well for the fight against Donaire, who was the most high-profile opponent of his career so far.

"Knowing that we were fighting Donaire, we knew it was going to be tough work because he is a super, super great boxer, the super world champion," said the 28-year-old Walters.

"Category after category, he has won titles, so I know I had to respect him. I put a lot in this training, and that's what I did," he added.

Donaire was in control in the first two rounds, and Walters acknowledged that the Filipino "caught me with a few shots in the early round." "He has power, he has speed. He was good," he said.

One of those shots was a left hook that staggered Walters at the end of the second round, but the Jamaican shook it off.

"I went in a little bit too confident, and he caught be with a good shot. Boom," Walters said, laughing. He added that his corner was worried, but he "recuperated from the shot just by walking to the corner."

"But it was a very good shot. He caught me very, very clean. A very good shot. He had good power also, but I recuperated after that shot, and I knew I had a job to do. I just went out there and got the job done," he said.

Walters took control of the fight soon after, landing a right upper cut that knocked Donaire down in the third round, and then overwhelming the Filipino in the sixth round for a statement victory.

Walters said he set up his knockout shot like a fisherman sets his bait.

"If you take a look at it, I invited him to me, like fishing," said Walters.

Donaire tried to land a huge blow of his own against Walters, but the Jamaican leaned back to evade the blow, then countered with the right hand that knocked "The Filipino Flash" out – the first stoppage loss of Donaire's career.

"You give him the bait, and he came in. You see him launch a shot, and I got away from the shot, and then I caught him," he explained.

"But I take nothing away from Nonito. He's a great champion and a wonderful person," added Walters, who also said he wants to invite Donaire to his camp to help him prepare in future fights, should he ever face another speedy opponent like the Filipino.

Walters and Donaire showed no animosity towards each other after the fight, and hugged in the center of the ring afterwards. The Jamaican also told the Filipino that he was one of his favorite fighters.

"You're my favorite fighter now," Donaire told Walters in response.

Donaire, Walters make featherweight limit

CARSON CITY, California -- The Stub Hub center is expecting a full house this weekend as the world featherweight championship takes place between two champions Nonito Donaire and Nicholas Walters.

Before fight night, fans were given a taste of what the competition will be like as the official weigh in was held open to the public.

Ring announcer Michael Buffer called the fighters on stage.

Walters came in at 125.6 pounds, clearing the 126 pound limit. The Jamaican looked fit and declared he is in tip top shape to face the more popular Donaire.

Donaire didn’t have any problems making weight coming in at 125.6 pounds as well.

He is very happy he had a pretty comfortable weight loss program and feels strong to show the firepower that has given him titles in 5 weight divisions

Fans enjoyed the stare down as the fighters posed for the media.

Team Donaire is psyched and confident the serious hard work put in the last two months will pay off.

The Jamaican is equally confident, determined to keep his record clean and claim the honors as featherweight king.

Donaire has won twice at the Stub Hub Center. This weekend he is hoping to score his third.

Donaire all set for title fight vs Walters

MANILA, Philippines – WBA featherweight super champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. already has his game plan set for Nicholas Walters this weekend.

The boxer’s father and coach Nonito Donaire Sr. said they have practiced the steps numerous times to make sure that they will be able to subdue the Jamaican knockout artist on Saturday in Carson City, California (Sunday, Manila time).

“We have a good game-plan which we worked on during 12 rounds of sparring with Guy Robb last Thursday and I’m not worried. I know Nonito will do it,” the elder Donaire told Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz.

Donaire Sr. reported that the five-division champion has become faster and stronger as they approach fight night. He added that his son is walking around 130 pounds and that making the featherweight division’s 126-pound limit will be no problem.

“He looks impressive,” he said.

Walters earlier claimed he will knock out Donaire in six rounds. The Jamaican has an immaculate record of 24 wins, with 20 coming by way of stoppages.

"I am very hungry and I am confident I will defeat Nonito Donaire, I believe I will knock him out in five or six rounds,” the Jamaican, nicknamed the “Axeman,” said.

Donaire, however, is the craftier and more experienced boxer with 33 victories against two defeats.

WATCH: Donaire raises $5K in Ice Bucket Challenge

Donaire calls out Pacquiao to follow suit

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxing champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to the next level and has so far raised $5,000 in his "Las Vegas" style event after being called out by former wrestler Dave Bautista.

Bautista last Monday challenged Donaire to the Ice Bucket Challenge that has swept the United States recently, which aims to raise awareness about Lou Gehrig's Disease as well as funds for the ALS Foundation.

Several celebrities and athletes have already participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge, wherein a bucket of ice water is dumped over them, followed by a callout to other personalities of their choice.

Donaire however changed up the challenge a bit, and in the process has raised $5,000 and counting.

"We heard people were complaining of two things: no money donated and water wasted," Donaire said on his Facebook account on Wednesday. "So we Vegas styled it up."

Instead of just dumping ice water over himself, Donaire instead sat on top of a tank and challenged his friends to hit a target, with certain amounts of money being donated for each hit.

"Every ball thrown had a price to throw on it so all that goes to #ALS and we still got dunked for charity," said Donaire, who posted a video of himself getting dunked into the ice cold water.

"We all got in the same ice water and recycled it in the pool and my landscape," he added.

Donaire then proceeded to challenge Manny Pacquiao, Frank Gore, Top Rank's Todd DuBoef and Draymond John.

He is the second athlete to call out the "Pacman," after American boxer Chris Algieri did the same Tuesday.

Palace praises Donaire for winning WBA crown

MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang on Sunday commended Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire for his unanimous technical decision victory over South Africa’s Simpiwe Vetyeka that led him to annex the World Boxing Association featherweight title.

Donaire overcame a deep laceration above his left eye to knock down Vetyeka in the fourth round. And when the referee stopped the fight before the start of the fifth frame, it was Donaire who was declared the winner.

Vice President Jejomar Binay also praised Donaire, saying his victory was a "testament to the indomitable Filipino spirit of having to push on despite seemingly overwhelming odds."

"Despite the abrupt end of the match, the 'Filipino Flash' has once again proven that he is the better fighter, as proven by the unanimous decision of the judges," Binay said in a statement.

"I admire his sportsmanship and sense of fairness, and I hope that his latest victory will serve as yet another inspiration to all Filipino athletes," he added.

Donaire has now won world championships in five different weight divisions, one of which was an interim belt. He was not fully satisfied with his victory, however, and offered to give Vetyeka a rematch to settle the issue.

Donaire suffered injury in Darchinyan fight

MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire suffered an injury during his 10-round featherweight showdown against Armenian Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan yesterday in Texas.

Donaire overcame a sluggish start and eventually knocked out Darchinyan in the ninth round – but not before contemplating giving up sometime in the middle of the fight.

“When he hit me in the cheek, I felt like he broke my cheek. Part of my mind was like, ‘Is this it for me? I’m losing the fight. Should I keep going?’” Donaire said. “But I put my heart into it, and you know what, I will never ever quit.”

Donaire revealed to "Umagang Kay Ganda" on Monday that he had sustained an orbital fracture in the fifth round.

“Na-injure kasi ako sa fight, sa fifth round. Natamaan ako sa cheek. Orbital fracture ang sabi ng doctor,” explained Donaire.

But Donaire said he drew strength and inspiration from his fellow Filipinos, thousands of whom are dealing with the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda.

“Parang ang sakit kasi sa mukha. Lumabas sa isipan ko na baka, ‘okay na lang, okay na lang.’ Pero sabi ko sa sarili ko na hindi ko pwedeng magawa talaga na sumuko,” he said.

“Sabi ko sa sarili ko na, ‘I have to do this.’ Hindi lang ito sa sarili ko. Wala ito kumpara sa lahat ng nangyari d’yan,” he added.

Donaire was trailing on two of the judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

He plans to rest for a while but will fly to the Philippines if given a medical clearance.

Arida, Donaire brought smiles to Filipinos

MANILA – Malacañang on Sunday thanked beauty queen Ariella Arida and Filipino boxer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire for bringing pride to the country during these trying times.

Speaking to radio dzRB on Sunday, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte congratulated Arida and Donaire for their respective victories.

“We extend our congratulations to Ms. Arida and the Filipino Flash. We appreciate their efforts to bring a bit of smile to Filipinos who are going through so much,” she said.

Arida finished third runner-up in Miss Universe 2013, a feat she dedicated to her countrymen who were devastated by super typhoon "Yolanda" last Friday.

Donaire, on the other hand, won against Armenian boxer Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan in the ninth round of their 10-round featherweight showdown in Texas on Sunday.

“No doubt that Filipinos will rise again,” Valte said.

Tagged as the world's most powerful typhoon this year, Yolanda hit the Visayas last Friday leaving thousands of people dead.

Odds makers favor Donaire over Darchinyan

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Nonito Donaire Jr. had a fruitful camp in Las Vegas and Oxnard, where he trained with fellow boxer Brandon Rios.

Both Rios and Donaire train under the watchful eyes of coach Robert Garcia

“Ibibigay ko ang lahat ng makakaya ko, nag-training ako ng husto.. I'll be ready for the fight,” said Donaire, who is up for a rematch against Vic Darchinyan.

Donaire will slug it out in a triple headline at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas this Saturday (Sunday, Manila time).

“The Filipino Flash” said that he will dedicate the fight to his fellow Filipinos.

Online betting sites favor Donaire over his Armenian opponent.

A $1,000-bet on Donaire could yield $100, while a $100 bet on the underdog Darchiyan could yield $660.

This, more or less, reflects the predictions of some boxing analysts.

Veteran sports writer Kevin Iole said he expects Donaire to knock out the Armenian boxer, noting that the Filipino is in his prime of his boxing career.

“I like Nonito Donaire as a fighter… Nonito should score a win by knock out on that fight,” said Iole.

“I think Darchinyan is coming up in weight, he feels better at this weight. However, I think he is still not gonna be able to stop Nonito's speed, he is not gonna be able to counter that Nonito's got power,” said Jaime Motta of Univision Sports.

Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. also picked Donaire for a win but not with a knockout.

“Knockout sometimes come, sometimes not, but I think he'll win the fight,” he said.

Analysts hope to see more from Donaire

MANILA, Philippines – Boxing analysts believe the best is yet to come for four-division former world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. who is due to collide with heavy-hitting Armenian Vic Darchinyan this weekend.

According to ESPN’s boxing analyst Kieran Mulvaney, Donaire may have lost a bit of his focus heading to the Guillermo Rigondeaux fight last April, which cost him his WBO super bantamweight crown.

“He's taken his eyes off the prize a little bit I think... he hadn't focus on the nuts and bolts of what made him successful, he had to go in whether he still wanted to do this,’ said Mulvaney in ESPN.com.

The analyst said fans will probably see a more eager, more focused Donaire against Darchinyan after the loss to Rigondeaux.

“I think we'd probably see him rededicated,” said Mulvaney, who described the Filipino Flash as a “very skillful fighter.”

“Assuming he's rededicated, i think we'd see a good couple of years of high quality boxing from Nonito Donaire.”

For his part, ESPN analyst Brian Campbell sees the Darchinyan fight as a get-well bout for Donaire, who suffered a slight dip in his career after his loss to Rigondeaux and a six-month hiatus from the fight game.

“He's coming into a rematch with Darchinyan, the guy he knocked out in their first meeting many years ago in 2007. What he's looking to do here is getting his name back out there,” said Campbell.

Although the bout is a rematch, Campbell sees Donaire wanting to prove himself again.

“For him, he's not taking [Darchinyan] lightly,” said the analyst. “He really thinks that Darchinyan coming here at age 37 is going to be motivated for the biggest fight of his life, last stand if you will to come out and get revenge against Donaire.”

Donaire picked to win against Darchinyan

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is expected to seal his comeback with a victory against Vic Darchinyan this weekend.

Donaire will slug it out in a triple headline at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas this Saturday.

Before leaving Las Vegas, he geared up for his upcoming fight with heavy and intense training, practicing on his ferocious punches, and testing the accuracy of each punch.

Six months after the birth of his son Jarel, Donaire said he is more inspired this time because his dad Donaire Sr. is on his camp.

“Ibibigay ko ang lahat ng makakaya ko. Nag-training ako ng husto… I'll be ready for the fight,” he said.

Veteran sports writer Kevin Iole said he expects Donaire to knock out the Armenian boxer, noting that the Filipino is in his prime of his boxing career.

“I like Nonito Donaire but you know Nonito just had a couple of bad performances. He needs to step up. He showed no adjustment against Rigondeaux and I think Nonito is really a talented guy,” said Iole. “I like Nonito Donaire as a fighter… Nonito should score a win by knock out on that fight.”

Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. also picked Donaire for a win but not with a knockout.

“Knockout sometimes come sometimes not, but I think he'll win the fight,” he said.

Meanwhile, some boxing analysts said that even though Donaire has the edge in terms of power and speed over Darchinyan, the Filipino Flash still needs to take this fight seriously.

“I think Darchinyan is coming up in weight he feels better as this weight. However, I think he is still not gonna be able to stop Nonito's speed he is not gonna be able to counter that Nonito's got power,” said Jaime Motta of Univision Sports.

“I think we could see the same result… Another knockout by Nonito. The one thing he does have to do is go back to his roots, he needs to box. He can’t let all the press and all the accolades get in to his head and just think that he is going to win just because he is stepping in the ring.

“I think he is probably taking a li’l bit more serious now. I think his loss to [Guillermo] Rigondeaux really hit home,” concluded Motta.

The fight will air Sunday morning on the ABS-CBN Channel 2 with an evening replay on Studio 23.

Donaire recovering from shoulder surgery

MANILA, Philippines – Former world super bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire is recovering well after undergoing surgery for his injured right shoulder last Friday at the Seton Medical Center.

Donaire posted a series of pictures on his official Facebook and Twitter accounts showing him before and after surgery.

The procedure, conducted by Dr. Shabi Kahn, fixed two tears and a bone spur on the boxer's right shoulder.

"Surgery went well. Want to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes," Donaire posted on his Facebook account. "I'll be resting up for a bit but will come back strong."

Donaire is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux, his first loss in 12 years. He revealed after the fight that he fought with a shoulder injury that would require surgery.

In an interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, Donaire said he plans to undergo rehab for eight weeks before working out again.

"I want to be 100% going into the ring the next time around," he said.

As for his next fight, Donaire's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, is planning to pit "The Filipino Flash" against former featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez later this year.

"If they make that happen, that would be good, but first things first, I need to heal up," Donaire said.

'Rigo' no walk in the park for Donaire, says analyst

MANILA – Filipino champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is in for a very tough fight against Cuban Olympian Guillermo Rigondeaux, according to a boxing analyst.

Rigondeaux may only have 11 professional bouts under his belt, but this doesn’t mean he’ll be easily crushed by the more polished Donaire, said veteran boxing commentator Ed Tolentino Guillermo

“It's not gonna be easy, it's not gonna be a walk in the park because Rigondeaux is a very, very good champion,” Tolentino said in an interview on ANC.

Rigondeaux has an astonishing record as an amateur, having won the World Amateur Boxing (WBA) twice and is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

He also became a full fledged world champion in his ninth fight as a pro, by knocking out Rico Ramos in 2012 for the WBA super bantamweight crown.

“We're taking here about a guy that had 400 fights as an amateur,” said Tolentino. “We're talking here of a WBA champion who was once called by Freddie Roach as one of the best counter-punchers he has ever seen.”

Tolentino said that against Rigondeaux, Donaire will have to exert extra effort by making calculated risks.

Both Donaire and Ringodeaux are counter-punchers which is why Tolentino expects a tactical fight in the early rounds.

“Donaire will have to be extra aggressive. I see this match dragging in the early rounds because both men are essentially counterpunchers,” he said.

But the analyst believes the Filipino boxer will employ every tactic to open up the Cuban.

“If he's (Rigondeaux) gonna counterpunch all night long, he's glad to do it. So Donaire right now is the more flexible fighter, he can box, he can slug, and he's gonna put on some pressure on Rigondeaux,” said Tolentino.

Tolentino said once Donaire finds an opening, he said the Filipino Flash surely go for the knockout.

A well-placed left hook will do the trick, said the analyst.

“Donaire, I believe, is gonna go for the kill. He has a statement to make, he knows that everybody's watching his fight right now,” he said.

“In his last fight against Roberto Marroquin, he (Rigondeaux) was rocked by a solid left hook. We all know that is the best weapon of Nonito Donaire Jr., the left hook.”

Analysts favor Donaire over Rigondeaux

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Several boxing analysts are expecting a “tough fight” for Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire against two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeux of Cuba for the WBO and WBA junior featherweight championship on April 13.

“Rigondeaux has a tremendous amateur pedigree. He's been a good pro, he is unbeaten, but Nonito is in a class of his own right now… he is a rare combination of speed and power. I see him actually winning this fight -- and winning in a spectacular fashion on the 13th,” said James Smith of “In this Corner.”

“If he could beat this guy and do it convincingly, it just opens more doors for him,” said Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Veteran boxing writer kevin Iole similarly cited Donaire’s speed and exceptional boxing skills in the ring.

“I like Donaire to win the fight maybe by stoppage. Rigondeaux had a great amateur career but he hasn’t been good as a pro. He is a two-time medalist but he hasn’t had the kind of pro career that Nonito Donaire has,” said Iole, veteran Yahoo! Sports boxing writer.

“I think the only person that can beat Nonito Donaire under 126 pounds is Nonito Donaire. If there is ever a fight that he is not prepared for or something else’s going on that is destructing to him that I think Donaire is vulnerable,” said Showtime television commentator Al Bernstein. “But he is the most talented fighter under 126 pounds by a lot.”

Although Rigondeaux seems to be the underdog, boxing experts said Donaire still needs to keep his guard.

The Donaire-Rigondeaux fight will take place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York and will air on ABS-CBN Sunday morning.

Golden Boy exec says Arum, Donaire making excuses

MANILA, Philippines – Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer believes his Top Rank counterpart, Bob Arum, and world super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire are making excuses when they rejected a $3-milion offer for a fight.

Golden Boy had offered Top Rank $3 million for the services of Donaire in order to put together a fight between “The Filipino Flash” and Mexican champion Abner Mares.

But in a RingTV report, Arum called the contract a “bulls--- offer,” while Donaire said he has not yet even seen the contract.

Schaefer told RingTV’s Lem Satterfield that both Donaire and Arum were making excuses.

“I don’t have a problem with Donaire not wanting to fight Mares or Top Rank not wanting to do business with Golden Boy,” he said.

“But then they should just say so and stop making excuses. Don’t ask for a contract, and then, when they have it, they come up with other excuses,” he added.

In a separate Boxing Scene report, Schaefer refuted the assertion that the contract they sent was not legitimate.

“Donaire stating that this is not a contract is wrong,” he told Rick Reeno. “If he does not want to fight Mares, then just say it. If Arum does not want to work with Golden Boy then just say it.”

“If Donaire is not his own boss and can not fight who he wants, then just say it. But they should stop making excuses,” Schaefer added.

With Mares out of the picture, Donaire is likely to fight another fellow champion, Guillermo Rigondeaux, on April 13.

Donaire is ESPN's Boxer of the Year

Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire was the "easy pick" for ESPN's "Boxer of the Year" after a sensational 2012 that saw him solidify his position as one of the sport's top pound-for-pound fighters.

Donaire, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and RING super bantamweight champion, was named Boxer of the Year by ESPN, beating other top contenders including Juan Manuel Marquez, Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero.

"It might sound strange, but no, Manny Pacquiao was not the best fighter from the Philippines in 2012,” wrote ESPN’s Dan Rafael. "That honor goes to 'The Filipino Flash,' junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire, who had a year for the ages."

"Donaire (31-1, 20 KOs) began the year having vacated his bantamweight belts and preparing to move up to junior featherweight. Four fights later, in an exceptionally busy year by modern standards for an elite champion, the quick-fisted and powerful Donaire stands atop the 122-pound division," Rafael wrote.

Rafael said Donaire "was the easy pick for 2012 ESPN.com Boxer of the Year."

"Donaire easily handled the move up in weight, winning all four of his fights in dominant fashion. He dropped each of his foes – scoring seven knockdowns in all – won twice by knockout and collected two world titles," Rafael wrote.

'The Philippines' best boxer'

In his first fight of the year, Donaire defeated Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. by split decision to claim the vacant WBO belt. He then decisioned South Africa's Jeffrey Mathebula in July to claim the International Boxing Federation belt.

In October, Donaire knocked out top Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka in the ninth round, then capped off his year with a sensational third round knockout of Mexican warrior Jorge Arce last December 15.

"It was the exclamation point on a year in which Donaire seized the mantle from Pacquiao, his idol, as the Philippines' best boxer and continued to assert himself as one of the best fighters in the world, period," Rafael wrote.

Rafael also commended Donaire for being the first and only boxer in the world to undergo random drug testing with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on a year-round basis.

"This in an era when every great performance unfortunately comes under the suspicion of possible
performance-enhancing drug use – except, of course, Donaire's," he said.

Donaire becomes the second Filipino fighter to claim the award, after Pacquiao, who won in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Edged Marquez, Garcia

Mexico's Marquez became a contender for the Boxer of the Year award after his stunning sixth-round knockout of Pacquiao in their fourth encounter last December 7, a punch that Rafael called "the shot heard 'round the world."

"In the most stunning scene of the year, Marquez earned the first definitive result in his epic four-fight series with Pacquiao," he wrote. "Marquez may trail the all-time series 2-1-1, but the knockout in their welterweight fight is the most memorable moment from the four fights."

Rafael also noted that the knockout was "one of the most significant moments in boxing in recent years."

Undefeated American Danny Garcia was also a contender for Boxer of the Year after winning all three of his fights in 2012. He decisioned Mexican legend Erik Morales in March, knocked out Amir Khan in July, and then knocked out Morales in their rematch in October.

Meanwhile, Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero also had a strong 2012 after proving himself to be a true contender at the welterweight division. Guerrero defeated Selcuk Aydin and the decisioned former champion Andre Berto.

Another Filipino fighter, Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria, was also a contender for Boxer of the Year.

"'The Hawaiian Punch' scored knockouts against quality opponents in both of his 2012 fights. In May, Viloria retained his flyweight title by stopping Omar Nino Romero in the ninth round to exact revenge from a previous loss and no-contest,” Rafael wrote.

"In November, in an exceptional fight, Viloria stopped Hernan 'Tyson' Marquez to unify 112-pound titles."

Donaire should be Fighter of the Year: analyst

MANILA, Philippines – A boxing analyst believes Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire should be named the Fighter of the Year after a highly successful 2012 campaign that saw him fight four times, with all fights coming against highly rated opponents.

In an era wherein most of the top fighters fight only once or twice in a calendar year, Donaire was extraordinarily active and repeatedly took on the top fighters in his division.

According to boxing analyst Al Mendoza, this makes him deserving of the Fighter of the Year award.

"Pinag-uusapan ngayon sa boxing circles kung sino ang itatanghal na Fighter of the Year. Ako, hindi naman sa dahil Pilipino si Donaire, pero ako, automatic na si Donaire," Mendoza said on radio DZMM Monday.

"Apat na laban, one fight every three months, matindi 'yan," he said. "Four fights in one year, apat na panalo, 'yung last two by knockout."

Donaire kicked off his 2012 campaign with a split decision victory over Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in February, followed by a unanimous decision win over South Africa's Jeffrey Mathebula in July.

He then knocked out Japan's Toshiaki Nishioka in October and then ended Jorge Arce's career with a third-round knockout in December.

Mendoza said Donaire's main competition for Fighter of the Year is Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez, who stormed his way into the ballot after a sensational sixth-round knockout of Filipino icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

"Hindi naman sa pagmamaliit, pero 'yung kay Donaire, three rounds. Six rounds kay Marquez," Mendoza said.

Mendoza also pointed out that Marquez landed a "lucky punch" that led to his knockout of Pacquiao, while Donaire clinically broke down Arce over the course of three rounds before landing his left hook to end the fight.

"Si Arce, hindi rin basta-basta. Four-time world champion, 61 wins, 46 knockouts," Mendoza added.

If Donaire is tabbed as Fighter of the Year, he becomes only the second Filipino to win the award. Pacquiao was named Fighter of the Year by The RING Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
