China bounces back, routs Malaysia by 91 points

MANILA, Philippines – Defending champions China bounced back from their opening day loss by posting a 91-point rout of Malaysia, 113-22, in their second game in Group C of the 27th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

China suffered a 63-59 setback against Korea to begin their title campaign on a poor note, but they righted the ship with a dominant performance against Malaysia.

The defending champions played without Yi Jianlian, who is still dealing with a hamstring injury, but four different players scored in double figures to power China.

Wang Zhelin topscored with 21 points, while veteran center Wang Zhizhi added 17 and Zhu Fangyu and Ailin Guo both scored 16 points.

China raced to a 31-2 first quarter lead, and never let Malaysia score more than 10 points in a quarter.

No player scored in double digits for Malaysia.

It was the second consecutive blowout loss for Malaysia, as they were demolished, 115-25, by Iran in their first game of the tournament yesterday.

China shot 59% from the field, while Malaysia converted only eight of their 44 field goal attempts (18%). Malaysia also turned the ball over 33 times, leading to 43 turnover points by China.

China notched 27 assists on their 45 field goals, and controlled the boards, 41-23.
