UFC 171: Hendricks makes weight on 2nd attempt

MANILA, Philippines – The UFC welterweight title clash between Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler is a go after the "Big Rigg" made the 170-pound limit on his second attempt on Friday (Saturday, Manila time).

Hendricks initially weighed in at 171.5 pounds, which is 1.5 pounds above the limit for the title clash.

He was given two hours to shed the extra weight. After doing light calisthenics, Hendricks was able to weigh in at exactly 170 pounds.

"Johny's scale might have gotten damaged at the hotel gym earlier today," Hendricks' nutritionist Mike Dolce said in MMA Fighting. "We did light workout and the weight fell off easily."

Lawler, for his part, had no trouble making the welterweight limit.

This means, the bout for the UFC welterweight title will push through as planned on Saturday evening (Sunday in Manila)

The Hendricks-Lawler fight will serve as the main event of UFC 171, which takes place in Dallas, Texas.

Hendricks lost a controversial decision to Georges St-Pierre in November last year, but was given another go at the title after the French-Canadian went on indefinite leave.

"Georges St-Pierre was the person holding the belt the whole time I've been trying to get it," he said in UFC.com.

"So that’s why I always said I want to beat Georges St-Pierre. Now if it was Robbie Lawler or Carlos Condit, I'd be looking at those guys. It's all about the belt, it's not about the person behind it for me. That 20-pound belt that Dana White puts around your waist, that’s what it’s about."

BALLS Channel will be airing UFC 171 via satellite on Sunday, March 16 starting at 10:30 a.m.

There will be a replay on ABS CBN Sports + Action on Sunday, at 9:00 p.m.
