The preliminary competition of Miss Universe 2015 kicked off in Las Vegas on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), with Wurtzbach and 79 other candidates taking part in the contest’s swimsuit and evening gown portions.
The event and an interview portion will help determine which contestants will be included in the Miss Universe Top 15.
The semi-finalists will be announced during the pageant’s coronation night on Sunday (Monday in Manila).
Wurtzbach’s predecessors have performed well in Miss Universe – Venus Raj (2010), Shamcey Supsup (2011), Janine Tugonon (2012) and Ariella Arida (2013) all made it to the Top 5, while MJ Lastimosa (2014) managed to enter the Top 10.
The Philippines currently has two Miss Universe winners – Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.
