Zuckerberg explains Facebook's plan to fight fake news

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has laid out plans on how his company plans to address fake news and information in social media, following criticisms it may have influenced the US election.

"Our goal is to connect people with the stories they find most meaningful, and we know people want accurate information. We've been working on this problem for a long time and we take this responsibility seriously. We've made significant progress, but there is more work to be done," Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

"We do not want to be arbiters of truth ourselves, but instead rely on our community and trusted third parties."

Some of the projects Zuckerberg outlined are:

STRONGER DETECTION

According to Zuckerberg, this means better technical systems to detect what people will flag as false before they do it themselves.

EASY REPORTING

Making it much easier for people to report stories as fake will help Facebook catch more misinformation faster, the CEO said.

THIRD PARTY VERIFICATION

The company plans to reach out to more fact checking organizations.

WARNINGS

Facebook is exploring labeling stories that have been flagged as false by third parties or their community and showing warnings when people read or share them, Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg said they are raising the bar for stories that appear in related articles under links in the News Feed.

DISRUPTING FAKE NEWS ECONOMICS

As the company announced last week, Zuckerberg said Facebook is looking into disrupting the economics with ads policies and better ad farm detection.

LISTENING

Zuckerberg said they will continue to work with journalists and the news industry for input and to better understand their fact checking systems.
