Google honors maternal and child health icon Fe del Mundo with doodle

MANILA -- Google on Tuesday celebrated the contributions of the late Filipina pediatrician Fe del Mundo to maternal and child health with a special doodle to mark her 107th birth anniversary.

Del Mundo was the first woman to be admitted to Harvard Medical School and set up a hospice for 400 children in Manila upon her return, Google said in a statement.

She sold her house and belongings to help finance the Philippines' first pediatric hospital, Google said.

Until she was 99 years old, Del Mundo made early morning rounds at the Children's Medical Center on a wheelchair. She lived on the hospital's second floor, Google said.

She also authored a "Textbook of Pediatrics" and established the Institute of Maternal and Child Health to train doctors and nurses, according to the statement.

She is the first Filipina to be declared as a National Scientist.
