Former US President George H. W. Bush has died, the family said Saturday. He was 94.
His cause of death has yet to be announced.
"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dad has died," former US President George W. Bush said in a statement, shared by family spokesperson Jim Mc Grath on Twitter.
"George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for," the statement read.
"The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens," it read.
Bush, the 41st US president, was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital in April shortly after the funeral of his wife, Barbara. He was treated for a blood infection.
Bush, who suffers from Parkinson's disease and is wheelchair-bound, has been hospitalized on several occasions for various ailments in recent years, including pneumonia.
He served as President from 1989 to 1993. His son George W. Bush later took over the White House, serving as President for two terms from 2001 to 2009.
After retiring from public life, the late Bush joined his successor, Bill Clinton, in raising funds for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
In February 2011, then President Barack Obama awarded Bush the highest US civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom.
