MANILA—It's perhaps the shortest "season" on record.
Young Vito's song "Awit" has now been taken down on both Spotify and YouTube, a day after the newbie rapper proclaimed the start of "Awit season," a rather hopeful wish that his track which many criticized for being transphobic would be successful.
It was released this Thursday under Viva Records, a decision made by the major record label amid the outrage the song's lyrics caused last month.
Actress Jasmine Curtis-Smith was among those who criticized Young Vito for mockingly singing about his experience of meeting a beautiful lady who turns out to be a trans woman.
Young Vito back then acknowledged that his song's lyrics were offensive and claimed that he had learned how much "[his] words can personally affect other people."
But he went ahead anyway and released a studio version of "Awit" this month, barely edited. He still sang in the track, "Ang ganda niya pero parang may mali. Noong dumikit mayroon akong napansin /napakalupit/ awit may lawit."
Though it appears Viva Records became well aware of just how much people online hated the song, and the label has since removed it from YouTube and Spotify.
