NBA: Gordon, Brown step up for Nuggets in Game 4 win over Heat

MIAMI -- Aaron Gordon scored a career playoff high 27 points in an all-out attack on the Miami Heat on Friday that helped push the Denver Nuggets to the brink of their first NBA championship.

Gordon led all scorers in the Nuggets' 108-95 victory over the Heat in Miami that put Denver up 3-1 in the best-of-seven NBA Finals.

The player once known for his dunking prowess -- including runner-up finishes in the 2016 and 2020 All-Star weekend slam-dunk contests -- showed just how versatile he has become as he connected on 11 of 15 shots from the field -- including three of four from three-point range.

"Making threes, getting to the foul line, guarding at a high level -- Aaron did it all for us tonight, he really did," Nuggets coach Mike Malone said.

Gordon erupted for 15 points in the second quarter as the Nuggets -- who trailed by one after Jimmy Butler's three-pointer to close the first period -- took a 55-51 halftime lead.

"This team does a good job finding the people that are kind of in a rhythm and kind of going," Gordon said. "When it comes down to it, it's just wanting to be great for my teammates. I know when my teammates need me and just doing it for my brothers."

He made his first three attempts from three-point range -- including one from the corner that put Denver up 86-73 with five seconds left in the third quarter.

"I'm just taking the ones that they're giving me, taking the open shots," said Gordon, who was staring down the Heat bench before the ball had cleared the net.

"It's just gamesmanship," he said. "That's part of the game. When you make a three in the corner with the opposition's bench, you can have a little fun with them."

Teammate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope wasn't surprised to see a few long-range shots fall for Gordon -- he's given him some advice.

"I always tell AG, man, continue to play his game. When you're shooting threes, no up, no in, so make sure you get that ball up so it can go in. He did that tonight."

Gordon's big second quarter helped the Nuggets gain control even as Nikola Jokic shook off a twisted ankle.

When foul trouble sidelined Jokic for more than five minutes in the fourth, Bruce Brown took it to Miami.

Brown scored 21 points in 30 minutes off the bench, pouring in 11 in the final period as the Nuggets repelled every Heat run.

Miami had cut the deficit to eight when Brown converted a three-point play to push Denver's lead back to double digits.

His pull-up three-pointer with 1:21 remaining was the final dagger, giving Denver a 108-91 lead.

"We knew they were going to trap Jamal (Murray) and try to get the ball out of his hands, so the other four players were going to have to make plays, and then luckily it was just my time in the fourth quarter," Brown said.

Surging Magic sink slumping Knicks

The Orlando Magic rolled to their third consecutive victory Sunday night, never trailing in a 131-117 win over the New York Knicks.

Orlando saw its 18-point, first-quarter lead shrink to just one at halftime, but the Magic scored the first six points of the third and were able to hang on for the remainder of the game.

Six players scored in double figures for Orlando, led by Aaron Gordon's season-high 31. Nikola Vucevic narrowly missed out on a triple-double, finishing with 28 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, and Evan Fournier added 19 points.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 32 points, and Trey Burke added 31 for the Knicks, who have lost five straight. Enes Kanter had 10 points and 11 rebounds in the second quarter alone and finished with 21 points and 19 rebounds for the game.

Orlando won for the seventh time in the past nine games after starting the season 2-6. The Magic are shooting 49.6 percent and averaging 114.2 points during the nine-game stretch.

Orlando shot just 41.4 percent and averaged 99.9 points through the first eight games of the season.

The Magic made their first 10 field-goal attempts Sunday and scored 25 points in the opening five minutes of the game to take an early 15-point lead.

By the end of the first quarter, Orlando had matched a franchise record for most points in an opening period with 44, and Gordon had scored 20.

New York outscored Orlando 35-23 in the second quarter, and Noah Vonleh's 3-pointer in the last minute cut the Magic's edge to 67-66 at the half.

Mario Hezonja, who was drafted No. 5 overall in 2015 by the Magic, did not play due to a coach's decision in his first return to Orlando.

The Magic have won five of their past six games against the Knicks.

Orlando hosts the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday before heading out west for a six-game road trip. New York returns home to face the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.

 Kings 142, Suns 119

Center DeMarcus Cousins scored 32 points and the Sacramento Kings blitzed the Phoenix Suns in the second half for a 142-119 victory.

Guard Darren Collison added 21 points, and the Kings (13-20) posted their highest-scoring game of the season.

Thunder 109, Hornets 90

Kevin Durant had his ninth double-double of the season with 29 points and 11 rebounds, and Oklahoma beat Charlotte in a matchup of teams headed in opposite directions.

Pacers 94, Pistons 82

Paul George poured in a game-high 32 points and scored his team's last 21 points as Indiana pulled away for the win.

The power forward, who struggled with his shot for 3 1/2 quarters and committed seven turnovers, also grabbed 14 rebounds. George Hill supplied 18 points and backcourt partner Monta Ellis added 14 for the Pacers.

George and Pistons small forward Marcus Morris got into a shoving match as the game ended and had to be separated.

Bucks 95, Timberwolves 85
Milwaukee overcame a 17-point first-quarter deficit to beat Minnesota.

Milwaukee started the game 0-of-11 from the field and did not score its first field goal until a lay-in by John Henson with 3:21 left in the first quarter.

It was the longest field goal drought by an NBA team since New Orleans went without a basket until 2:42 remained in the first quarter against the Orlando Magic on Dec. 20, 2006.

Pelicans 105, Mavericks 98

Anthony Davis poured in a game-high 31 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the struggling New Orleans Pelicans to a road victory, knocking off the Dallas Mavericks 105-98 at American Airlines Center.

Most impressive for the Pelicans, who were just 3-15 on the road entering this game, was their poise at each end of the floor down the stretch after Dallas quickly rallied from a 12-point deficit to tie the game at 85-85 in the fourth quarter.
