'We Are the World' to get an 'American Idol' alumni encore

LOS ANGELES - “We Are The World,” the celebrity-packed 1985 charity single, is getting an encore this weekend, courtesy of the stars of “American Idol.”

“Idol” judges Lionel Richie, who co-wrote the song with the late Michael Jackson, Katy Perry and country singer Luke Bryan will perform it on Sunday alongside former stars and winners of the television talent show, broadcaster ABC said on Friday.

ABC said it will be the first television performance in 35 years of the song, which originally was written to raise money for African famine relief and featured musicians including Jackson, Diana Ross, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan and many others.

Sunday’s singers will include “Idol” alumni Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Lauren Alaina, Ruben Studdard and Scotty McCreery, as well as the top 11 finalists from the current season of the show.

The singing contest, which will crown this year’s winner during the broadcast, has been produced remotely since mid-March when the coronavirus shutdown movie and television sets throughout the United States.

Richie said he had been “asked a thousand and one times” whether he was going to write another song that captures the coronavirus era.

“My answer is, exactly the lyrics I would have written for the new song are in the old song,” he told television talk show host Jimmy Kimmel this week.

“The lyrics work perfectly,” he added, referring to lines such as “We’re saving our own lives.”

Asked why he wanted the song sung by the “American Idol” family, Richie told Billboard on Friday, “We’ve done the all-star cast and it was historic. These kids inspire me with their talent and they reflect the diversity of the world.”

Fil-Am Francisco Martin enters 'American Idol' top 7

Francisco Martin has earned his ticket into the top 7 of “American Idol.”

Host Ryan Seacrest revealed the results of the nationwide votes in America on Sunday (Monday in Manila).

Aside from the Filipino-American singer, also advancing to the next round are Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Jonny West, Julia Gargano, Louis Knight and Just Sam.

After learning the good news, all seven had to perform two more songs while at home: a Disney song, and another one dedicated to their mothers.

For Martin’s first performance, he did his own version of “You’ll Be in My Heart” from the movie “Tarzan,” and admitted to judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry that he enjoyed himself while filming it.

Dubbing it as the “transformation of Francisco,” Richie noted how he saw the 19-year-old singer actually smiling at himself while performing.

“In other words, when you’re doing that, that was just giving us the confidence and the enjoyment. And by the way, we as an audience, we love to see that kind of emotion,” he said.

Perry, for her part, could not help but favorably compare Martin to a fellow contestant, saying what he did was “really amazing.”

“I agree with Lionel, you looked relaxed. All that self-doubt has been really stripped away. What you gave us at the end is kind of what I wanted from Louis Knight. This is a competition. Let’s get real. There’s only one Idol and you were spot-on with your performance and then at the end, you let us have it with the talent of your voice. Good for you. You are a good bet,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bryan said Martin’s first performance showed that he’s not just "the king of the jungle but you felt like king of ‘American Idol’ in my opinion.”

For his second song, Martin chose to dedicate a heartfelt performance of Leon Bridges’ “River” to his mom.

Perry thought Martin was already incredible with the Disney song, but he grew even more when he did his second performance.

“This set of Mother’s Day songs is really separating the pack. It’s showing who deserves that top position and you are making it difficult for all these other contestants because that performance was so, so full and beautiful and real. It was so heartfelt what you just did,” she said.

For Bryan, Martin’s version was actually better than the original and he wouldn’t think twice of spending his money on it the moment he heard the young singer’s first note.

Meanwhile, Richie reiterated how he loves that Martin’s confidence is now front and center.

“You’re no longer in your head. It’s all about your delivery now. We were checking your pulse [during auditions], remember that? Congratulations because you have a career and that is what’s most important and we saw it happen here on ‘American Idol,’” he said.

Voting for the next round began midway through Sunday’s episode and it will end on Monday (Tuesday in Manila).

For those in America, there are three ways to vote for Martin and that’s through the American Idol app, or by dropping by the American Idol website, or through texting “12” to “21523.”

The top 5 vote-getters will be revealed next week and will advance to the next round.

Fil-Am Francisco Martin makes it to 'American Idol' top 11

The “American Idol” journey of Filipino-American singer Francisco Martin is not yet over.

The results of last week’s votes were announced during the show’s Sunday episode (Monday in Manila), sending its top 10 contestants to the next round.

Martin was the last to be called, although the announcement of the top vote getters was in no particular order.

“I just made top 10 and I feel speechless to be honest. I actually didn’t think I was gonna make it. I was super scared at the end. I was shaking, my legs were quivering. I am just super grateful. Thank you guys for voting for me, for voting me in. I am just super grateful. I can’t talk right now. I am still in awe. Thank you guys so much,” he said.

At the end of the show, judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie used their “save,” sending 11th contestant Makayla Phillips through to the next round.

Immediately after the announcement, the top 11 performed for America anew in the hopes of securing a spot in the top 7 next week.

For this round, Martin chose to sing James Arthur’s “Falling Like the Stars.”

Martin’s performance was so moving that Perry was crying.

“When you sang those lines about having four kids and then one on each knee, I was like -- yeah sure it was hormones, but it was believability too. It was real believability and I felt it,” Perry told the 19-year-old singer.

Bryan, meanwhile, thinks Martin is “a diamond in the rough.”

“You really know how to get all the emotions out of a song. If I was a little more hormonal, I’d be crying right now,” he said.

As for Richie, he told Martin: “Halfway through that song, I just saw you fly out of that nervousness and give us exactly what you’re all about which is true talent.”

Here’s how to help Martin make it to top 7:

Marlo Mortel collaborates with former 'American Idol' contestant

MANILA – Marlo Mortel is looking forward to share to his followers his new collaboration with Evelyn Cormier, who was part of the Top 14 of “American Idol” last year.

In an interview with entertainment site PUSH, Mortel said he and Cormier became friends through social media because he always posts her performances on his Instagram Stories.

“Fan ako ng voice niya. Lagi siyang nagpapasalamat at nire-repost niya hanggang naging friends na kami,” he said.

“Then this year, she also reposted my original songs, kaya I asked her if she wants to be my duet partner and she said yes and she’d love to,” he added.

Titled “Bones,” the song will be part of Mortel’s Love On Lockdown Originals, all of which he’s written while Luzon is under quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Saying he will announce more about the project next week, Mortel explained: “In the process kami sa pagre-record separately, ako dito sa room ko, then siya sa studio at her hometown, New Hampshire. Naka-quarantine din kasi sila sa America tulad natin dito.”

The singer-actor said this is a dream come true for him because he’s really a huge fan of “American Idol.”

“I’m a huge fan! Last year, I visited an ‘American Idol’ venue during my vacation just to have a glimpse. Not knowing that this year, I’ll be collaborating with my personal bet from the same season,” he said.

Fil-Am Francisco Martin sings Katy Perry song as he fights for a spot in 'American Idol' Top 10

The show must go on for “American Idol” as it returned on Sunday (Monday in Manila) with a fresh new episode featuring the top 20 contestants singing from their homes as they vie for a spot in the top 10.

For Francisco Martin, he took a chance when he decided to cover “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry, who is one of the show’s three judges along with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

While saying it was a “dice roll to do that song,” Perry gave her seal of approval, telling the Filipino-American singer that what he did was really beautiful.

“I thought it was really beautiful at the beginning. That one note that you hit was amazing, and then it was all the way uphill,” she said. “You did it real justice. Good job!”

Bryan, on the other hand, said: “I was nervous. I was like please do not let this kid cover a Katy song and mess it up. You didn’t man, you made it you, and you just have the magic. I’m jealous.”

Meanwhile, Richie said it’s just warming to watch Martin go on stage and take anybody’s song, especially a Katy Perry tune.

“Are you kidding me? You took the chance of life. But you turned it into your song. You made it your song. Congratulations you’re doing a great job,” he said.

After the top 20’s performances, fans can vote for their favorites through the “American Idol” phone app, at the American Idol website, and by texting the contestant’s number to 21523. Ten votes are allowed per contestant for every method of voting.

Here’s how to help send Martin through to the next round:

Host Ryan Seacrest said the top 10 contestants with the most number of votes will be revealed next week.

'Is that Bruno Mars?': 'Idol' judges send Fil-Am singer Francisco Martin to Top 20

Filipino-American singer Francisco Martin received a standing ovation from “American Idol” judges as he performed before them in Hawaii for a spot in the Top 20.

During the show’s Sunday episode (Monday morning in Manila), Martin chose to sing the new Harry Styles hit “Falling” for the Showcase Round.

Compared with his last performance, Martin owned the stage this time, showing no signs of nervousness, while playing the guitar and singing his heart out.

After his song, the judges were up on their feet, with Luke Bryan even jumping up and down in his seat.

“I don’t really recognize who you are anymore, especially what you did last night, and that’s a good thing,” Katy Perry told Martin, as the judges talked to the contestants individually about their fate the following day.

Lionel Richie agreed, saying: “When the girls screamed, did you see what he turned into? I don’t even think he sang for a moment. He just kinda sat there and took it all in.”

Martin’s performance even prompted Perry to liken him to another popular Filipino-American artist.

“I was like, is that Bruno Mars? I like it,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bryan said he’s proud how Martin is “figuring out how to be a real artist, somebody that you naturally root for.”

“You check every box. I have a feeling that great things are just going to happen to you in this experience. You’re just a wonderful talent,” he said.

It was at that point when Bryan told Martin that he made it to the Top 20 after they have decided to send him through to the next round.

'Future superstar': Fil-Am singer wows judges on 'American Idol'

Another Filipino-American is set to make waves in Hollywood.

During the pilot episode of the 18th season of “American Idol,” singer Francisco Martin walked into his audition with his nerves getting the best of him.

Clasping his guitar, Martin looked extremely anxious only to be calmed down by judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

This seemed to have helped him as he nailed his cover of Maggie Rogers’ “Alaska,” earning raves from the judges.

“I just checked the pulse of a future superstar,” quipped Bryan.

Richie, for his part, said in jest that he loved how Martin set them up by looking afraid and timid at first only to explode into the amazing singer that he is.

As for judge Katy Perry, she lauded the singer’s “incredible voice” before asking him to perform one of his originals saying “we just want you to win.”

In the end, Perry said: “Would you faint if I told you that you are top 10?”

All three judges then unanimously sent Martin through to the next round.

Aside from the judges, Martin also received a positive feedback from Rogers herself, who took to Twitter her reaction.

“I can’t handle this,” she wrote in all capital letters.

Eighteen-year-old Martin, who is currently taking up his pre-law course, hails from San Francisco, California.

He kissed Katy Perry and didn't really like it

NEW YORK - For many young men inexperienced in romance, having one's first kiss with none other than Katy Perry would presumably be a welcome prospect.

Not so for Benjamin Glaze -- a 20-year-old from Oklahoma who showed visible discomfort when kissed by the pop superstar as she served in her new role as a judge on talent show "American Idol."

Glaze explained on an episode broadcast this week that he had never kissed anyone before and had wanted to save the experience for a relationship.

His remark came after country star Luke Bryan, a fellow judge on the show, phrased as a question one of Perry's most famous lyrics: "Have you kissed a girl and liked it?"

Perry beckoned over Glaze and invited him for a kiss, which he delivered on her cheek. She followed up by quickly smacking him right on the lips. Blaze voiced shock and stumbled through his song before being dismissed by the judges.

Perry's forwardness, while in line with the playful behavior of television personalities, triggered a flurry of commentary on social media -- with some accusing her of sexual harassment amid the newfound focus on consent in the #MeToo movement.

Speaking to The New York Times, Glaze said he was raised in a conservative family and had felt "uncomfortable immediately" as "I wanted my first kiss to be special."

As the story generated growing commentary, Glaze on Wednesday went to Facebook to criticize the media coverage and said he was not complaining about Perry.

"I do not think I was sexually harassed by Katy Perry and I am thankful for the judges comments and critiques," he wrote.

"I was uncomfortable in a sense of how I have never been kissed before and was not expecting it.

"My main goal is to reach people through the universal love of music and not cause strife or anger against anyone or about any situation!"

'American Idol' host Ryan Seacrest accused of misconduct in Variety report

LOS ANGELES - A former stylist for "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest on Monday accused him of sexual misconduct, although Seacrest denied the accusations last November.

Suzie Hardy told Hollywood publication Variety that Seacrest sexually harassed her for six years, starting in 2007, when she became his personal stylist at E! News.

Seacrest, who is also co-host of ABC television's daytime talk show "Live with Kelly & Ryan" and producer of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," made public the woman's accusations last November, when he also issued a denial.

E!, a unit of Comcast Corp, conducted an internal inquiry into her accusations but said in January that it had found insufficient evidence to support her claims.

Seacrest's lawyer Andrew Baum said on Monday that Variety's decision to run Hardy's story was upsetting.

Baum said in a statement that Hardy had previously asked for money to stay silent. "They (Variety) were told that the accuser threatened to make those false claims against him unless he paid her $15 million," he said.

"At that time, the claimant threatened to issue a demonstrably false press statement unless she was paid. Instead, my client proactively and publicly denied the claims and agreed to fully cooperate with E!’s investigation about the matter."

ABC did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Monday. Hardy's lawyer did not reply to a request for comment on Variety's account.

Hardy's interview with Variety on Monday marked the first time she was identified and details of her claims were revealed. Hardy, whose employment ended in 2013, said she felt the E! investigation was incomplete and one-sided.

E! said in a statement on Monday that its investigation by an outside lawyer was "extremely comprehensive and thorough" and that "any claims that question the legitimacy of this investigation are completely baseless."

Talent show "American Idol," with Seacrest as host, is scheduled to return to television on March 11 on Walt Disney Co's ABC network after a 14-year run on Fox ended in 2016.

Seacrest is the latest celebrity to be accused of sexual misconduct in a scandal that has rocked Hollywood and beyond since October 2017.

"To have my workplace conduct questioned was gut-wrenching. I’ve always aimed to treat all of my colleagues with honesty, respect, kindness and compassion," Seacrest, 43, wrote in a February guest column for The Hollywood Reporter.

American Idol's Joanne Borgella Dead at 32

Former American Idol contestant Joanne Borgella passed away on Saturday at the age of 32 following a year-long battle with cancer.

Borgella's family announced on her Facebook page, "To God be the glory! With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne."

The tragic news was shared with her fans after she succumbed to Endometrial cancer Saturday morning.

Borgella, who lost her battle with the Big C with faith and courage, had chronicled her cancer treatments on Twitter.

The singer-songwriter got her first taste of the spotlight in 2005 when she  appeared on Oxygen's Mo'Nique's Fat Chance under the name Miss F.A.T.

But it was only when she appeared on the 7th season of American Idol in 2008, and made it to the top 12  girls and overall top 24 before she was eliminated, that she began to make a name for herself.

In October 2013, she revealed she was suffering from a 'rare case' of the illness immediately after being diagnosed with cancer, which had spread from her uterus to her chest.

She went on to share her story in video and blog posts by regularly updating her fans on her progress.

"It's really not about a stage [of disease]. God is with me and I feel his presence every day," she said about her condition.

"I just wanted to share this information with everyone to let them know what I'm going through and I'm going to update everyone every week as much as I can," she added.

Borgella, in her last Facebook message on September 23, appeared to be in good spirits as she shared her latest round of radiation treatment. She  even shared a photo, where she looked healthy and full of life.

"Gooooood morning!! We are heading back to radiation for 2 procedures!! God is with us!! I have lots to fill you in on.. The presence of The Lord is here.. Prayers up!!! I love you guys (sic)," Borgella wrote.

The Borgella and Ramirez families urged her fans to "take the time to educate yourselves on Endometrial Cancer and support research efforts".

Malaya Watson wows with jazzy take on Beatles song

MANILA – Filipino-American singer Malaya Watson wowed the “American Idol” judges anew as she performed a jazzy rendition of The Beatles’ “Long and Winding Road” on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila).

Showing beautiful voice control, judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban agreed Watson is the most consistent among the nine remaining finalists of the talent show.

“Oh Malaya, gosh that was beautiful baby. Wow. You really chose a performance that showed us your voice and I could feel your voice,” said Urban.

“When you hit the first notes to the end of the phrase, when you hit the ‘lead me to your door,’ your vibratos are beautiful. That’s where your personality comes through. We feel it, that’s you and we get a sense of your spirit.”

Lopez, on the other hand, said Watson’s voice stands out among everybody else’s, adding that the 16-year-old singer reminds her of a young Michael Jackson.

“I think of you during the opening number with the head banging and the whole thing, I love that stuff. To me, you stole that number. And when you come out here with that type of control, because we know you can be some kind of off the rails in the best way, your voice really stands out above everybody’s else’s to me. It sounds like the sweetness of the young Michael Jackson, I hear hints of it. It’s so beautiful, you’re so blessed. You’re 16 and you blow me away,” she said.

Connick, meantime, advised Watson to forget stardom and work on her craft.

“I give you the award for the most consistently improving. I think you really listen to what we say. It was strong. One thing, this is non-performance related, I heard you say in the pre-performance package before how you’re on the road to stardom, we were always taught to work on our craft. Forget stardom Malaya. Put it out of your mind. Work on harmonies,” he said.

“Hang around with the piano, bass and guitar players and your tuba instructor and learn every note of every chord because with a voice, ears and attitude like you have, you really can become something great,” he continued.

On Thursday (Friday morning in Manila), the contestant with the lowest votes will be booted off the competition.

Malaya Watson shines in 'Dreamgirls' song

MANILA – Malaya Watson, the only remaining contestant with Filipino roots on “American Idol,” once again proved she belongs in the competition as she delivered a strong rendition of a Jennifer Hudson song on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila).

For the Songs from the Movies week, Watson chose “I am Changing” from the film “Dreamgirls,” which eventually earned a standing ovation from judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and the live audience.

Both Lopez and Urban noted the song was perfect for Watson.

“Good girl, Malaya. That’s the perfect song for you. Perfect way to end the show. That was killer. You have an amazing voice, oh my God. You’re so blessed,” Lopez said.

Despite showing some nerves, Urban said one of Watson’s strength is that she has “a really good understanding of the songs.”

“That song was perfect to play your strengths. The only thing is that there’s bits of places where you could reign it in a little bit but it’s just the adrenaline and the rush of the crowd. Anybody in here, you sense the energy is huge and you get caught up in it. But what you have inside that’s going to blossom, it is magnificent,” he said.

Judge Harry Connick Jr., meanwhile, said he can’t wait for Watson to bloom some more.

“I’ve heard people on the street come up to me and say ‘Oh this year, there’s no belter among the group.’ I’ve heard that. People say that. Again, this is the most diverse group I think 'Idol' has ever seen. You just showed everybody that there is a big belter,” he said.

“I look forward over time, over the course of this competition and over the years, your sound is just going to get bigger and bigger. It’s going to be a pleasure to watch. Nice job,” he added.

On Thursday (Friday morning in Manila), the contestant with the lowest votes will be booted off the competition.

On the other hand, those who will be voted into the Top 10 will be part of the “Idol” tour this summer.

2 girls with Pinoy roots sing for votes on 'Idol'

MANILA – Malaya Watson and Marialle Sellars, the two girls with Filipinos roots who made it to the 13th season of “American Idol,” were among the contestants chosen by the judges for Rush Week.

Along with eight other girls, Watson and Sellars were given the chance to perform for America’s votes on Tuesday (Wednesday morning in Manila).

Performing sixth for the night, Sellars sang Katy Perry’s “Roar” which the judges thought did not showcase her real talent.

“Your voice and your ability to perform is better than that. I don’t think that was the best song for you. I don’t think that was the tempo for you. I feel like it all came off too karaoke,” said judge Keith Urban.

“Intonation, singing in tune is big. Try to stay more in tune. Sing in the pocket. The first time I saw you, I was so impressed. I didn’t see that superstar which I think you are,” said judge Harry Connick Jr.

While lauding the contestant's poise after she nearly tripped over her high heels at the end of her performance, judge Jennifer Lopez thought Sellars should have played the guitar just like what she did when she auditioned.

“I would love to see you come out and do that in your guitar so people would see what we saw in you. This is not the best showcase of who you are. But the tremendous point in the end was crazy. You won my heart in that,” she said.

Last but not the least

With only one spot left in the top 10, the six remaining girls in the “chamber” were already feeling the pressure.

Amid the tense atmosphere, the judges said they are picking Watson to take the 10th spot, citing her powerful vocals.

Known as the tuba player from the Southfield High School in Michigan, Watson performed “Hard Times” by Ray Charles which earned the judges’ nods.

“Welcome to the top 10. The stress for everyone has been so great. I just want to give you a big ol' donut. We all know how talented you are. I look forward to seeing you settling into a space,” Connick said.

“You make glasses and braces seem so cool. It’s confidence, you can make it work. If America votes you through, I can’t wait to hear what you’ll sing next,” added Urban.

Lopez, meantime, described Watson’s performance as “epic.”

“There is no doubt that you are one of the big powerhouses of this competition. Every time you get up there, for me it’s just epic… I just want to say that you did a great job tonight. I have to say you’re amazing and I really hope we have you around for a long time,” she said.

The other female contestants who were also picked by the judges to perform were:

Majesty York – “Happy” by Pharrell Wiliams
Kristen O'Connor – “Turning Tables” by Adele
Briana Oakley – “Warrior” by Demi Lovato
Jena Irene Asciutto – “Paint it Black” by Rolling Stones
Bria Anai Johnson – “Wrong Side of a Love Song” by Melanie Fiona
Jessica Meuse – “Drink A Beer” by Luke Bryan
Emily Piriz – “Paris” by Grace Potter and The Nocturnals
M.K. Nobilette – “All of Me” by John Legend

On Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), 10 boys will also get to perform for America’s votes. Results will be revealed on Thursday (Friday in Manila).

Fox cancels 'X Factor' as Simon Cowell returns to UK version

LOS ANGELES - U.S. television singing contest "The X Factor," led by judge and show creator Simon Cowell, was canceled on Friday after three seasons, network Fox said on Friday.

"The X Factor," which was unable to replicate the ratings success of fellow Fox singing contest "American Idol," was only able to muster 6.2 million viewers for its season three finale last December, about half of its first season finale audience.

Cowell, 54, whose acerbic on-screen personality helped transform "American Idol" into one of the top shows on U.S. television, will also return to the UK version of the show in an effort to help declining ratings there.

"I've had a fantastic time over the last 12 years, both on 'The X Factor' and 'American Idol,' Cowell said in a statement. "And apart from being lucky enough to find some amazing talent on the shows, I have always had an incredible welcome from the American public (most of the time!)"

"The X Factor" was seen as a way for Cowell to put his own stamp on U.S. reality television as it was a show he created and produced, and helped lead it to popularity in Britain.

The U.S. version of the show struggled to find the right mix on the judging panel, running through nine different personalities in its three seasons on the air.

In 2012, Fox spent a reported $15 million to hire pop singer Britney Spears as a judge on the show in a bid to boost ratings, but she was unable to turn her star power into larger audiences for Fox.

Last year, viewership fill to about 6 million per episode from 9 million in 2012. Its main rival, Comcast Corp-owned NBC's "The Voice" drew about 12 million viewers per episode.

Cowell, a British media and music mogul best known for the biting criticism of contestants that helped draw viewers to "American Idol," will be without a show on U.S. television for the first time since "Idol" began in 2002.

Jessica Sanchez bares some skin in Boracay

MANILA – For the first time, "American Idol" season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez bared some skin as she enjoyed her vacation in Boracay.

Sanchez surprised some of her followers on Instagram when she posted a photo of herself wearing a white bikini.

Netizens praised Sanchez, with comments ranging from "beyond beautiful" to "sexy and "hot."

Sanchez finally found some time to explore the country after headlining a New Year’s countdown show at Eastwood in Quezon City last December 31.

Before her trip to Boracay, Sanchez traveled to Bataan, which is the native town of her mom. She also went to Subic in Zambales where she saw a dolphin show at the Ocean Adventure.

Pinay 'Idol' hopeful fails to crack Top 20

MANILA, Philippines – She may have nailed the song with her unique arrangement but Filipino-American singer Jett Hermano failed to make it to the Top 20 of the latest season of “American Idol” on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila).

For the second part of the girls’ night where the remaining female “Idols” staged their solo performances, Hermano chose to sing Rihanna’s hit song “Only Girl In The World.”

Accompanying herself on the piano, Hermano slowed down the song, which judge Keith Urban said brought out the sexiness of the entire performance.

Urban also praised Hermano for making the song her own.

“What you did for me by slowing the song down and doing it the way you did, you brought out the sexiness in the song in a way that Rihanna does but in another way. I really, really appreciate that, Jett,” he said.

While noting that she also loved the song’s arrangement, judge Nicki Minaj said she felt Hermano’s performance needed to have a climax.

“I like the arrangement as well. I liked that you slowed it down. But I thought it was going to a climax or something and I never felt that,” she said.

Judge Randy Jackson, for his part, lauded Hermano’s beautiful falsetto which he called “Little Mariahs.”

“The first part was absolutely beautiful and I loved the little thing at the end and I call it little Mariahs, those little falsetto thing were very nice,” he said.

But just like Minaj, Jackson said Hermano should have done something more than just sit in the piano.

“I thought you’re gonna get up from the piano, rock it on stage, wear that vocals... In the middle part, when the tempo came in, I was like ‘Yo, come on!’” he said.

Contrary to what Minaj and Jackson said, judge Mariah Carey said she finds Hermano "intriguing."

“I always thought you were an interesting audition. And that there is something different about you and I’m not sure exactly where you’re gonna take it but I’m sure it will be very, very intriguing,” she said.

“It didn’t matter to me that you didn’t go sick at the end and have your feet on the piano or whatever. I did enjoy the first part of the song a lot and I like that you did that song,” Carey added.

But despite her unique arrangement and praises from Carey and Urban, Hermano was sent home by the judges at the end of the show along with contestants Melinda Ademi, Juliana Chahayed, Cristabel Clack and Rachel Hale.

Last week, Filipino-American hopeful Adriana Latonio survived the Las Vegas round of the hit talent show. She is now set to advance to the “Sing For Your Votes” round of the competition.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether another Filipino-American singer -- Bryant Tadeo -- could pull off an A+ performance when he and the rest of the top 10 boys will compete for a slot in the Top 20. That episode will be shown on Friday in Manila.
