Twitter adds 'explore' to make finding tweets easier
SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter on Thursday added an "explore" tab aimed at making it easier to find interesting content, the latest move to boost engagement at the one-to-many messaging service.
The feature, which was being added first to Twitter on Apple mobile devices and was promised for Android-powered smartphones in coming weeks, combines trends, Moments, search and live video highlights in a single spot, according to project designer Angela Lam.
"Until today, you had to go to a few different places to find each of these experiences," Lam said in a blog post.
"As part of our continued efforts to make it easier to see what's happening, we're bringing all these together."
The intent was to make Twitter more inviting by making it simple to find news, trending topics, and popular tweets, according to Lam.
San Francisco-based Twitter has been striving to boost its ranks of users and revenue.
Twitter is to announce earnings from the final quarter of last year on February 9.
Twitter reported a net loss for the third quarter ended September 30 of $103 million, compared with a $132 million loss a year earlier. Revenues meanwhile grew eight percent year-over-year to $616 million, most of that from advertising.
The key metric of monthly active users rose only modestly to 317 million from 313 million in the prior quarter -- a growth pace that has prompted concerns over Twitter's ability to keep up in the fast-moving world of social media.
Analysts have been skeptical about Twitter's outlook for expansion, expressing concerns about its ability to entice users beyond its core base.

Facebook-owned Instagram getting into shopping
SAN FRANCISCO - Instagram on Tuesday said it would start testing features that let smartphone or tablet users easily buy items they find on the popular photo and video sharing service.
The test slated to begin next week in the US will be tailored for Instagram applications on Apple mobile devices, according to a blog post by the Facebook-owned service.
The move will build on a strategy by the world's leading online social network to connect shoppers and shops, earning revenue from purchases.
"Mobile has changed the way people shop," Instagram said in the blog post
"We're excited to announce an easier experience to shop the products you love on Instagram."
Instagram cited industry statistics indicating that smartphone purchases are commonly used in the US to browse or research options regarding potential purchases.
Twenty US retailers including Kate Spade and JackThreads will take part in the Instagram e-commerce test, sharing posts that provide more information along with "Shop Now" icons for streamlined purchasing, according to the blog post.
"This test is going to change the scope of what we, as retailers, are capable of offering on mobile," JackThreads chief marketing officer Ryan McIntyre said in the post.
"Our customers will be able to shop seamlessly from their social media feeds -- allowing us to reach guys where they’re already hunting for what’s new."
Rival firm Pinterest last year dove into e-commerce with "pins" that let people buy items they like at the popular online bulletin board.
Pinterest became a hit, particularly among women, by giving people virtual bulletin boards that they can decorate with pictures showcasing interests in anything from food to sports, to fashion or travel.
