Outage strikes Facebook services worldwide

MANILA—Facebook users in several parts of the world reported the social media site was inaccessible early Thursday (Manila time).

Tracking website Downdetector received hundreds of reports that users experienced "total blackout" while others had login issues on the popular app.

Users in the Philippines, Japan, Australia and New Zealand were among those affected by the problem.

The hashtag #facebookdown was among the top Twitter trends in the Philippines.

The California giant, which has more than 2 billion users, has yet to issue a statement.

Facebook says glitches affecting across platforms resolved

Facebook Inc said on Wednesday an issue with uploading or sending media files on its apps and platforms has been resolved.

Earlier in the day, many users globally were not able to send and receive images, videos and other files over its social media platforms including WhatsApp and Instagram, and the social media company said it was working to fix the problem.

"During one of our routine maintenance operations, we triggered an issue that is making it difficult for some people to upload or send photos and videos," Facebook had said.

Facebook, which gets tens of millions of dollars from advertising revenue daily, declined to comment when asked whether it will refund businesses. In a similar incident in March, the company said it would consider refunding advertisers for lost exposure.

"The disruption appears to be related to an internal infrastructure or application issue," said ThousandEyes, a company that monitors internet traffic globally.

The partial outage frustrated users of the world's largest social network, with many taking to Twitter to complain.

More than 14,000 users reported issues with Instagram, while more than 7,500 and 1,600 users complained about Facebook and WhatsApp, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.

Downdetector's live outage map showed the issues were mainly in parts of Europe and the United States.

The best Internet reactions to #facebookdown

MANILA - Popular social media sites Facebook and Instagram unexpectedly went down for almost an hour on Tuesday, prompting thousands to air a flurry of complaints and comments on rival site Twitter.

According to the Associated Press, the brief Facebook outage affected users in the United States and Asia.

In that time, many took the opportunity to vent and post snide remarks on Twitter using the hashtag #facebookdown.

"You mean people will only see my dinner on ONE form of social media?" quipped one user.

Instagram, meanwhile, acknowledged the outage on Twitter. "We're aware of an outage affecting Instagram and are working on a fix. Thank you for your patience," Instagram said.

On 2014, Facebook experienced similar brief outages during the months of June and August.

What caused outage? Facebook explains

FRANKFURT - Facebook, the world's largest social network, and its Instagram photo-sharing site, suffered temporary outages around the world for up to an hour on Tuesday and the company said later that an internal software networking error was to blame.

The outage at Facebook appeared to spill over and temporarily slow or block traffic to other major Internet sites, according to web and mobile user reports from around the globe.

A hacker group associated with other recent high-profile attacks sought to take credit for the outages, but Facebook denied in a statement that any outside party was responsible.

"This was not the result of a third-party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems," the Facebook statement said. "Both services are back to 100 percent for everyone."

Users in the United States and many countries in Asia and Europe reported that they were unable to log on to the websites of Facebook, Instagram and corresponding mobile apps including Facebook and Facebook Messenger from around 0600 GMT. Services were restored within an hour of going down, users reported.

During the outages, Facebook users were greeted with the message: "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can."

A Twitter account that purports to speak for hacker group "Lizard Squad" posted messages suggesting that it was behind an attack that temporarily blocked several major web sites, including Facebook and Instagram.

The Lizard Squad is a group of unknown hackers that has taken credit for several high-profile outages, including the attacks that took down the Sony PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live network last month.
