Jaguar Land Rover to cut 2,000 jobs globally: company

LONDRES, UNITED KINGDOM - Jaguar Land Rover on Wednesday said that it planned to lay off around 2,000 staff in the next financial year.

The largest car manufacturer in Britain, owned by India's Tata Motors, said in a statement: "We anticipate a net reduction of around 2,000 people from our global salaried workforce in the next financial year."

Jaguar Land Rover has almost 40,000 employees worldwide, according to its 2019-20 annual report.

It had announced Monday that the Jaguar brand would produce only electric vehicles by 2025 and that Land Rover would have its first fully-electric vehicle in 2024.

The car maker said it would invest £2.5 billion ($3.5 billion, 2.9 billion euros) annually under its 'Reimagine' plan, which aims for its supply chain and operations to become carbon neutral by 2039.

It had said this plan would also involve substantially reducing its non-manufacturing operations.

The radical overhaul comes under new chief executive Thierry Bollore, who joined in September.

The statement released Wednesday said that a "full review of the Jaguar Land Rover organization is already underway".

It said the organization had already started to brief salaried staff on the job cuts, which do not affect manufacturing staff paid by the hour.

Jaguar Land Rover has plants in the West Midlands area of England as well as facilities in Slovakia, India, China and Brazil.

Its owner Tata Motors is part of the Indian conglomerate Tata Group.

Jaguar claws Arizona woman who climbed zoo barrier to take a selfie

A jaguar clawed an Arizona woman who climbed over a barrier to take a picture at the Wildlife World Zoo near Phoenix, officials said, and the zoo assured animal lovers the big cat would not be put down.

Cellphone video of the incident showed at least one gash on the woman's left forearm as she writhed on the ground in pain on Saturday.

"I hear this young girl screaming: 'Help, help, help' ... and the jaguar has clasped its claws outside the cage around her hand and into her flesh," witness Adam Wilkerson told Fox 10 television.

Wilkerson's mother distracted the jaguar by pushing a water bottle through the cage, and Wilkerson said he pulled the woman away. Cellphone video later showed the animal chewing on a plastic water bottle.

The identity of the woman, in her 30s, was being withheld, said Shawn Gilleland, a spokesman for Rural Metro Fire, the agency that responded to the incident.

She was taken to a hospital and treated, then later returned to the zoo to apologize, Gilleland said.

"She wanted to take a selfie or a picture of the animal, and she put her arm close enough to the cage that the cat was able to reach her," Gilleland said.

The zoo's statement said the female jaguar never left its enclosure, and that the incident was being fully investigated.

"We can promise you nothing will happen to our jaguar," the zoo said on Twitter, responding to public concerns the animal might be put down.

The barrier surrounds the entire exhibit, creating a buffer of several feet (metres) from the enclosure, zoo spokeswoman Kristy Morcom told Fox 10

"There is climbing involved. It's not something that is easily done," Morcom said. "These are wild animals and those barriers are put there for a reason.

Eyeing future sales, luxury carmakers innovate to woo millennials

NEW YORK, United States - British carmaker Jaguar has developed a tool to win over seen-it-all millennials who view a conventional test drive as passe.

Seeking to tap into younger customers' desire for a few moments of cinematic glory, Jaguar films the prospective customers behind the wheel as they navigate the vehicle through several precarious driving challenges, channeling their inner speed demon.

Moments later, they are emailed a slickly edited two-minute film, which can conveniently be uploaded to Facebook and social media sites.

"It all takes literally minutes," said Jaguar spokesman Stuart Schorr. "By the time you're done, you've taken a test drive, but you've also got an asset that's shareable and fun."

The clever tactic is part of the 94-year-old brand's effort to boost its US sales as it broadens its offerings in 2016 with the introduction of new models, including the F-PACE, Jaguar's first sports utility vehicle.

But all the automakers at this week's New York International Auto Show have the new generation in their sights.

"Generation Y will dictate who wins and who loses in the marketplace," said John Humphrey of JD Power's global automotive practice. "It is by far the biggest generation we've had in the US."

BMW, also eyeing millennials, has trained a cadre of some 1,000 showroom "geniuses" -- like the staff at an Apple Store "Genius Bar" -- to show drivers how they can customize the car's myriad gadgets and driving tools.

They are distinct from the salesforce and are not supposed to seal deals, said Ludwig Willisch, president and chief executive of BMW North America.

Millennials "don't like sales pressure," Willisch told the JD Power auto forum Tuesday, as opposed to their parents, the baby boomers, who rely more on test drives and multiple visits before making a purchase.

With millennials, he said, "You only get one shot."

"If we get this right, and we will, we have the opportunity to create lifelong BMW drivers."

Pocketbook challenge

It is a crucial point for luxury cars, which account for about half of the auto industry's profits. A long-term worry for auto companies is that with the surge of rideshare programs like Uber and optimism about self-driving cars, younger Americans will drive less than earlier generations did.

Humphrey said automakers face particular pressure because the overall US auto market is expected to cool significantly following several boom years.

"We're coming up on the end of the current cycle," said Humphrey, who warned that the industry could slip back towards overcapacity and a reliance on rebates and cheap prices to move inventory.

Those practices are less a problem for brands like Jaguar and BMW, which cater to a more select group of buyers less influenced by price, Humphrey said.

But luxury brands face other difficulties with millennials, a generation renowned for carrying hefty student loans and without the means to spend $50,000 or $60,000 on a car.

Compact and midsized cars accounted for the highest shares of the millennial market in 2015, with a combined 32.6 percent. Premium vehicles in total accounted for less than 10 percent, according to JD Power data.

For that reason, luxury automakers are taking the long-term view in their marketing campaigns.

Few of the 6,000 consumers who have participated in the Jaguar events have ordered one of their cars, Schorr said. But about 60 percent have shared their personal action videos on Facebook. That creates additional exposure and buzz, enhancing the brand's prospects.

"The whole subtext is to reintroduce the Jaguar brand to a younger group of customers, and that's an investment you look to pay off over a number of years," he said.

Luxury carmaker Jaguar eyes mass market SUVs, sedans

LONDON - Luxury carmaker Jaguar said it would invest $2.4 billion in a new range of lightweight aluminium sports sedans and crossover SUVs aimed at the mass market, creating 1,700 jobs in a British economy showing signs of resilience.

The spending is part of a move to launch more affordable models from 2015 to emulate the success of lower cost luxury vehicles made by its sister company Land Rover, and will better position it to compete with its larger German rivals.

Jaguar, part of the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) group owned by India's Tata Motors, said the investment could create a further 24,000 in supply chain jobs.

"The creation of 1,700 new jobs and £1.5bn investment by Jaguar Land Rover is a great vote of confidence in the UK economy," British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Twitter.

British car sales rose by 11 percent in August, the 18th consecutive month of growth, in contrast to Germany, France, Italy and Spain, which all suffered sales declines.

Britain's finance minister, George Osborne, said on Monday that the UK had turned the corner and that an accelerating economy vindicated his austerity programme.

JLR has roared to health in the four years since Tata Motors bought the group from Ford for $2.3 billion.

It has escaped the cycle of plant shutdowns and falling production at many European automakers by tapping into growing demand for luxury cars in emerging markets.

Despite falling sales at home amid a sluggish Indian economy, shares in Tata Motors surged as much as 10 percent to a record high on Tuesday, outperforming a broader market that was up more than 3 percent.

Also on Tuesday, Jaguar Land Rover said August sales rose 28 percent from a year earlier to 27,852 vehicles.

CROSSOVER BOOM

Carmakers around the world are expanding into so-called premium "crossover" vehicles, seeking to tap demand for models that combine the functionality of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) with the comfort and performance of luxury cars.

Nearly one in every four premium vehicles sold last year in Europe was a crossover or SUV, and the category continues to grow, despite concerns about size and fuel consumption, according to UK-based consultancy LMC Automotive.

Jaguar's new models will compete directly with the likes of Germany's BMW and Daimler's Mercedes-Benz which dominate the market for entry-level luxury vehicles.

Jaguar said cash would be spent to design systems to help it introduce new one-piece "aluminium vehicle architecture".

The new models will be built on production lines previously used to make Land Rover vehicles at JLR's plant in Solihull, central England, where some 1,700 new jobs will be created.

A Jaguar sports sedan, due to be launched in 2015, will be the first to feature the new technology. It will also be the first car to use engines from JLR's new engine plant in nearby Wolverhampton.

Next up will be Jaguar's first ever sports crossover vehicle, called the C-X17, also featuring an aluminium frame, which is being showcased at the Frankfurt car show this week.

"The inherent flexibility of this all-new technology will enable the Jaguar Land Rover business to not only enter but aggressively compete in exciting new segments, creating new markets for both brands," JLR's Chief Executive Ralf Speth said.
