End of an era as La Salle Green Hills opens doors to female students in senior high school

MANILA — La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) is opening its doors to female students this year, marking the end of an era for the private Catholic school which has been exclusive for boys since 1959.

LSGH, which offers elementary and secondary education, will go coeducational, specifically in its senior high school, or grades 11-12.

The change is "part of our transition to an integrated school for SY 2020-2021," LSGH president Br. Edmundo Fernandez FSC said in a May 12 letter to the school community.

The first 20 female applicants will be offered a tuition subsidy, LSGH said.

Previously, Ateneo de Manila High School, also once an all-boys school, welcomed female students in 2016 to its inaugural senior high school program.

Most De La Salle Philippines institutions are coeducational, including De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, which similarly offers elementary and high school education.

LSGH's coeducational transition was only one of two major changes detailed in the May 12 announcement.

When classes start on July 20, LSGH will introduce a new, home-based online learning program, which will then transition to "blended" learning (which includes the classroom setup) either in the second or third trimesters, depending on the state of the pandemic.

Kobe Paras officially signs with UCLA

MANILA, Philippines – Kobe Paras has officially committed to play collegiate basketball with the UCLA Bruins, head coach Steve Alford announced.

Paras, a standout from La Salle Greenhills who moved to the United States to play for Cathedral High School, verbally committed to play for UCLA in October 2014 but made it official this week.

According to the UCLA Bruins' website, Alford received a signed National Letter of Intent from Paras on Wednesday, the first day of early signing period.

"We're always looking for players who've grown up immersed in basketball, and Kobe definitely fits that mold," Alford was quoted as saying. "He just loves the game."

"To add a talented player like Kobe to our program is terrific. He's a very athletic guard who plays with tremendous energy. We like how he can attack off the dribble and get to the rim in the open court," he added.

"We're excited that he'll be joining us in Westwood."

Paras is currently playing for the Middlebrooks Academy Team and has represented the Philippines in several international competitions, including the FIBA Asia Under-18 3x3 Championships.

"Officially a Bruin," Paras said in an Instagram post. "I can't wait for the next chapters of my life…. This one is for my family back home."

Along with Paras, UCLA also got official commitments from Ike Anigbogu and Lonzo Ball, who are highly rated players in their high school class. All three will enroll at UCLA in 2016 and begin their freshmen seasons in the 2016-2017 academic calendar.

Kobe Paras impressive even in defeat

LOS ANGELES – It has been a rough week for the Cathedral High School Phantoms as they lost back-to-back games.

But despite the losses, Filipino basketball prodigy Kobe Paras has been impressive as the former La Salle Greenhills standout has gone on a scoring rampage in recent weeks.

Last Wednesday, he tallied 18 points against Bishop Montgomery, considered one of the top 25 high school teams in the country. Cathedral nearly pulled an upset before Bishop took a 76-69 win.

On Friday, Paras nearly doubled his previous output, scoring 35 points including six three-pointers in a 66-72 overtime loss to Cantwell Sacred Heart High School.

Paras played all 36 minutes of the game.

After producing a week's worth of highlights, the well-prepared Cantwell squad managed to keep the UCLA-bound Paras from dunking.

Despite the losses, there is another bright spot for the team as Paras' teammate and fellow international student, 6-foot-10 Lucas Seiwart, committed to Arizona State University.

The regular season wraps up this week before high school playoffs begin.

Kobe Paras gets scholarship offer from UCLA

MANILA, Philippines – Former La Salle Greenhills standout Kobe Paras has received a scholarship offer from NCAA Division 1 university UCLA, the most high-profile school to express interest in the young Filipino player so far.

Paras, through his Twitter account, retweeted tweets from @VerbalCommits, @Compton_Magic and @Team_Bayless saying he had picked up an offer from UCLA.

The report was later confirmed by the Los Angeles Times, who quoted Paras' coach at LA Cathedral as saying, "Kobe was very excited."

Paras starred for La Salle Greenhills in the junior division of the NCAA before moving to Los Angeles, where he will make his debut for LA Cathedral next month.

He first made waves for his stunning leaping ability, famously dunking past LeBron James during the NBA superstar's visit to Manila in 2013. Since then however he has grown to 6-foot-6 and improved his outside shot.

Aside from UCLA, Paras has also received offers from Arizona State, University of California-Berkley, UC Irvine, Portland State, Fresno State, and Texas Arlington.

Paras has yet to make official visits to any of the schools.

DLS-G Golfers Pull Away

Luigi Guerrero and JP de Claro stepped up when teammate Miggy Yee struggled to sustain the breakaway of La Salle Greenhills in the third round of the Junior Division of the JGFP-ICTSI Inter-School golf tournament recently at the Ayala Greenfield Estates course in Calamba, Laguna.

Over at the Valley course, Daniella Uy and Mia Legaspi also poured it on for runaway leader St. Paul's Pasig in the Girls 1 category.

Guerrero and De Claro combined for 103 points to cushion Yee's worst round so far of 47 points as the LSGH squad chalked up 150 for a three-day aggregate of 454 and a virtually unassailable 56-point lead going into the final two rounds.

Even La Salle's second unit could have matched the output of the second-running La Salle Zobel which pooled just 137 on the 50 points of Jama Reyes, 44 of Miguel Shah and 43 of John Molina. La Salle Zobel finished three rounds at different courses at 398. Ateneo was third at 390, Xavier fourth at 371, Brent and LSGH 3 tied for fifth at 325 and Xavier 2 at 299.

Uy found her range to shoot a one-under-par gross of 71 equivalent to 57 points at Valley and Legaspi backed her up with a 54 for 111 points that pushed St. Paul's farther ahead by 67 points over Ateneo, 315-248, also after 54 holes of the tourney backed chiefly by the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. and also sponsored by the Pancake House Group, Sizzlin' Pepper, Pancake House, Golf Depot and Philippines Airlines.

Paulina Sotto topscored for the third straight time with 43 and Nicole Barreto's 40 counted as the second score for the Ateneans.

La Salle Zobel, bannered by Pauline del Rosario, was just two points behind Ateneo in third at 243 after a 90, Southville was at 235, Assumption, rallying behind the 56 of Bianca Pagdanganan, at 231 and College of St. Benilde at 211.

Yee's drop in form allowed Raymart Tolentino to grab the lead in the individual race with a 157 total against the 156 of the latter. Guerrero and De Claro shared third at 149. Legaspi, with a 160 total, paced the Girls 1 individual tally by 11 over Southville's Chanelle Avaricio while Del Rosario was at 147.
