Miss Earth 2017: Australian candidate is half-Pinay
MANILA – Miss Australia Nina Robertson revealed during the coronation night of the Miss Earth 2017 pageant on Saturday that she is half-Filipino.
Before giving her answer in the competition’s final Q&A segment, Robertson was asked how she finds the Philippines so far.
To the audience’s surprise, the 20-year-old beauty queen said: “I am actually half Filipino so for me, this is like my second home. It is so lovely to be here but I am very proud to be representing Australia. Whichever country I am representing, I am just happy to be doing what we are doing here--advocating the conservation of the Mother Earth.”
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Robertson shared that her mother hails from Nueva Ecija.
According to her profile on the official Miss Earth website, Robertson is the youngest of three children and is constantly surrounded by her big family especially from her mother’s side.
“Living all in the same area means we all grew up spending lots of time together, celebrating special events with lots of food. Another thing that my family taught me was to appreciate all the opportunities I had growing up in a developed country compared to their upbringings in the Philippines,” her bio said.
Robertson also shared in her profile that she and her family frequently visit the Philippines “and make sure to take part in actions to give back to the unfortunate.”
After the coronation, Robertson won the Miss Earth Air 2017 crown.
“I am so excited for all the activities for the year but even after that, we are still going to continue doing what we are doing here at Miss Earth,” she said.
The Philippines’ Karen Ibasco won the Miss Earth 2017 title.

PH wins historic back-to-back Miss Earth titles
It's a Back to Back #MissEarth win for the Philippines! Congratulations to Angelia Ong! pic.twitter.com/grejc6fW1q
— Miss Earth (@MissEarth) December 5, 2015
MANILA - The Philippines' Angelia Ong was named the 2015 Miss Earth in a coronation night held at the Marx Halle in Vienna, Austria on Sunday, marking the first time in the pageant's nearly 15-year history that a country has won back-to-back titles.
The 24-year-old Ong, who beat more than 80 other national delegates, succeeded Filipina beauty queen Jamie Herrel, who earned the title in 2014. She is the country's third representative to have won the crown, the other being Karla Henry back in 2008.
The other winners are:
Miss Earth Fire: Thiessa Sickert of Brazil
Miss Earth Water: Brittany Payne of USA
Miss Earth Air: Dayanna Grageda of Australia
Ong is a marketing management student at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in Manila. In an earlier press conference held before she left for Austria, Ong said that she hopes to win the title so that she could participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, which began last November 30 and will run until December 11.
In her Miss Earth profile page, Ong said: "I chose to continue the advocacy I started when I was just a candidate for Miss Philippines Earth."
"These were Restoration, Reforestation, minimizing carbon footprints and taking 5R (Rethink, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Respect) by heart which brings me to a campaign I call #WEWILLBECAUSEWECAN."
"This campaign aims to inspire and educate people on how they can contribute in helping the environment in their own little ways and even through social media."
"Getting the campaigns online is a strategy to get the message out there and create more awareness. Awareness or identifying the problem is the first step in solving the problem."
"We have to educate people about the threats of Climate Change because it is only through an educated society can true reform be achieved."
The Miss Earth 2015 pageant will be aired on ABS-CBN Sunday morning, before noontime show "ASAP 20."

Miss Earth beauties arrive for finals night
MANILA - Delegates of the Miss Earth 2014 pageant have started arriving in the Philippines for the grand coronation night to be held on November 29.
The event, which will take place at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, gathers some 90 beauties from around the world.
First to arrive were ladies from Mexico and Nepal. Miss Philippines-Earth Jamie Herrell and pageant organizer Lorraine Schuck also welcomed contestants from Australia, Guam, Fiji, and Samoa.
Early favorite and six-footer Miss Mexico Yareli Salas aspires to work in broadcast news. Miss Nepal Prisha Shrestha, a business student, said she feels at home in Manila where many Nepalese are studying. She has also learned "salamat po" and other Filipino words.
Since its inception, the Miss Earth pageant has risen as one of the top four pageants in the world, after Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International. It has distinguished itself as the only pageant with environmental protection as its theme.
The candidates are scheduled to tour Boracay, Ilocos, Pangasinan, Cebu, Batangas and Palawan where they will spearhead tree planting, anti-air pollution activities and other environmental events.
The pageant has not been spared the usual controversies. Weeks before, the original Miss Australia-Earth Dayana Grageda was dethroned due to alleged failure in fulfilling her duties. She was replaced by her runner-up Nadine Roberts. Miss Venezuela-Earth Stephanie de Zorsi has also been replaced lately by her runner-up Maira Herrea due to alleged weight issues.
Reigning Miss Earth Alyz Henrick of Venezuela does not want to be drawn into the controversy, but she agrees that her country wants to send the best candidate in Miss Earth.
The Miss Earth 2014 pageant delegates will be presented on November 10 at the Green Sun Hotel in Makati. ABS-CBN and Star World will air the pageant activities and coronation night.
