Paul Pierce hurts ankle as Clippers club Celtics
Doc Rivers couldn't resist needling Los Angeles Lakers' fans after Paul Pierce went down with an ankle injury Monday night.
"It is his ankle, which is good news, because when he went down I thought it was his knee," Rivers said. "Of course, the Lakers' fans thought they were going to bring out the wheelchair at some point, but they didn't do that, so that was good."
Rivers was referring to the 2008 NBA Finals when he was coach of the Boston Celtics and Pierce was one of the team's stars. Pierce left the court in a wheelchair with an apparent leg injury, only to return a short time later and resume playing.
Pierce's ankle sprain put more of a scare into the Clippers than the Celtics did. Austin Rivers scored 16 points, and Los Angeles rolled past Boston 114-90 at Staples Center.
DeAndre Jordan and Jamal Crawford added 15 points apiece for the Clippers, who won their third consecutive decision. Jordan also had 13 rebounds and three blocks in three quarters.
Chris Paul finished with 13 points and 14 assists, Wesley Johnson scored 11 points, and Jeff Green contributed 10 for Los Angeles (46-27). Paul's 14 assists equaled the entire output of the Celtics, while the Clippers had 29.
Isaiah Thomas led Boston with 24 points, while Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart each scored 13. The Celtics (43-31) had their four-game winning streak snapped.
The Clippers' shooting was the difference. The Clippers made 52.4 percent of their shots to 34.8 percent for the Celtics. Los Angeles also connected on 11 of 25 (44 percent) 3-point tries to seven of 19 (36.8 percent) for Boston.
"Any team in this league, if they're knocking down shots, it's tough to guard," said Smart, who connected on six of 12 shots but missed all four of his 3-point attempts. "They were very comfortable out there, and we kind of let them get into their zone. It was hard to stop them in the second half."
Pierce, who scored eight points in 12 minutes, hurt himself with 2:06 left in the second quarter when he drove to the bucket as he was defended by Jared Sullinger. He slumped to the court after he landed at an awkward angle under the basket.
"I was worried about him," Paul said. "I did not even see him fall. Once he made (the shot), my mind clicked straight to defense. Paul is a warrior and a guy that has been through a lot, and we are glad that he is OK."
Pierce's departure occurred when the Clippers were completing a dominating second quarter that allowed them to bolt past the Celtics. They outscored Boston 37-26 in the second and turned a six-point advantage after the first quarter into a 67-50 halftime lead.
Los Angeles increased the margin to 92-70 heading into the final quarter.
Austin Rivers scored 10 points in the second quarter.
"Sometimes, we try to get it back in one play," said Thomas, who collected half of his points on the foul line, where he hit 12 of 13. "A lot of teams do that, though. We can't get down like that, especially to a good team. It's hard to come back against a really good team and get down 20, especially on the road. We can't put ourselves in that hole.
"Honestly, we just didn't make shots. For the most part, we got the looks that we wanted, (but) guys didn't make shots. Like I said, against a team as good as they are, you have to play a perfect game on the road. You have to be able to make shots and defend them at a high level. We didn't do that."
The clubs split the season series. The Celtics won the initial meeting 139-134 in overtime at Boston.

Pierce banked the jumper over three players, fell to the court with his hands raised, and was promptly mobbed by his teammates as the Verizon Center crowd celebrated.
The win gave the Wizards a 2-1 series lead over the top-seeded Hawks.
Asked later if he called bank on the shot, the former Finals MVP merely said: "I called game. Game."

Clippers in talks with Nets to get Pierce
The Los Angeles Clippers, looking for roster upgrades, have engaged in conversations with the Brooklyn Nets to try to construct a sign-and-trade that would reunite Paul Pierce with Doc Rivers, ESPN.com reported.
Rivers, the Clippers' president and coach, has had several conversations with Pierce, a small forward, since he became a free agent July 1. It would bring Pierce back under the coaching guidance of Rivers like he had in Boston.
According to ESPN.com, the Clippers could simply sign Pierce as a free agent using their midlevel exception at $5.3 million, but they are interested in pursuing sign-and-trade scenarios that would allow Brooklyn to get something in return for the 10-time All-Star.
Because Brooklyn holds his so-called Bird rights, a sign-and-trade also would allow Pierce - who made $15.3 million last season - to sign for more than the midlevel exception.
Pierce has drawn interest from the Blazers, Grizzlies, Bulls, Mavericks, Rockets and Clippers, sources told ESPN.com.

The offer is one of the biggest assistant coaching contracts in league history.
Rambis coached on Phil Jackson's staff with the Lakers and used the triangle as head coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves. (Editing by Mark Lamport-Stokes)

Pierce powers Nets to another win over struggling Heat
MIAMI - Paul Pierce tallied 17 of his 29 points in the third quarter as the Brooklyn Nets continued their mastery over reigning NBA champ Miami Heat with a nail-biting 96-95 win Wednesday.
The 36-year-old Pierce paced the offence for the Nets who have beat the Heat in all three meetings this season and snapped an eight-game losing steak at AmericanAirlines Arena.
Miami had the ball after a timeout with 3.5 seconds left, but Shaun Livingston knocked away a pass that was intended for LeBron James in front of the basket to ice the victory in front of a crowd of 19,616.
Pierce said two-time defending National Basketball Association champion Heat have lost their "fear factor."
"On that last play, we got the steal and let the clock run out," Pierce said. "We know when we play good team defence that we can beat them now.
"They used to have that fear factor. When we are on our game we can come in here and get a win."
Pierce spent his first 15 NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics who drafted him 10th overall in the 1998 entry draft.
Pierce came to the Nets this season as part of a blockbustre trade between Boston and Brooklyn that also saw the Nets get Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry.
Both previous wins over the Heat this season were in New York. Brooklyn edged the Heat 101-100 on November 1 as part of their 5-14 start and then won 104-95 in double overtime on January 10.
Despite a slow start to the season, the Nets are hoping that this nine-game home win streak will give them confidence down the stretch and into the postseason. They were expected to challenge for the top spot in the East but the struggles and injuries had slowed their progress.
"These are the big games. We are glad we came away with win," Pierce said.
The Nets played without Garnett who missed his seventh straight game on Wednesday. Andrei Kirilenko also didn't play because of a sprained ankle.
Chris Bosh tallied 24 points while Dwyane Wade scored 22 for the Heat who have lost four of their last five games.
James finished with just 19 points on six-of-13 shooting from the field for the Heat, who had their six-game home winning streak halted.
"That's obviously a tough one to lose here at home," said Miami coach Erik Spoelstra. "The turnovers going down the stretch in the fourth quarter hamstrung us."
Miami clinched a playoff berth with a 99-90 win over the Washington Wizards in their last outing.

Nets 101, Raptors 97
An ailing Paul Pierce buried a three-pointer with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter to help lift the Nets to a win over the Toronto Raptors.
Pierce, who left Sunday's win over the Kings with a bruised shoulder and was not expected to play on Monday, knocked down a three-pointer with two seconds left on the shot clock to give the Nets a 97-94 lead.
Brooklyn (32-30) stretched its season-high home winning streak to eight games while the Raptors (35-27) had their three-game win streak snapped despite 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from Kyle Lowry.

Bobcats 105, Nuggets 98
Al Jefferson had 26 points and 13 rebounds, guard Kemba Walker scored 24 points, and newly acquired guard Gary Neal scored 19 as the Charlotte Bobcats beat the Denver Nuggets.
The Bobcats led by 12 points in the first half and 14 in the second as they matched a franchise record by winning their seventh straight at home.
They are now 30-34 and comfortably in seventh spot in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Nuggets fell to 27-36 and lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

Bucks 105, Magic 98
Point guard Brandon Knight scored nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, and forward Khris Middleton hit three three-pointers in the final period as the Bucks rallied for a victory over the Orlando Magic.
Middleton finished with 21 points for the Bucks (13-50), who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Orlando (19-46) made seven of 16 three-pointers through the first three quarters but missed five of seven long-distance attempts in the fourth.

Nets' Pierce fined $15,000
NEW YORK - Brooklyn forward Paul Pierce was handed a $15,000 fine by the NBA on Tuesday, a day after he was thrown out of the Nets' blowout loss to Indiana.
The NBA veteran was ejected from the contest and charged with a flagrant foul 2 with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter after clashing with Pacers point guard George Hill.
Hill was racing toward the basket on a fast break when Pierce caught him on the neck with his left arm, sending Hill crashing to the court.
NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn said Pierce had been fined "for making excessive and unnecessary contact with George Hill of the Indiana Pacers."
Pierce didn't score a point in the game, just the second time in 1,123 games that the 16-year veteran was held scoreless and the first time since March 1999 when he was an NBA rookie.
