Jennifer Lopez, Shakira to play Super Bowl halftime show

LOS ANGELES, United States—Pop superstars Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will perform together during the widely watched US Super Bowl halftime show in February, the singers and broadcaster Fox Sports said on Thursday.

"First time together on stage... on the world's biggest stage. Welcome @JLo and @Shakira to the #PepsiHalftime show," a tweet from Fox Corp's Fox Sports said.

The National Football League's Super Bowl championship, to be played in Miami on Feb. 2, 2020, is the biggest annual event on US television. The halftime show typically features some of the world's most well-known performers. Last year's telecast attracted 98.2 million viewers.

Lopez, an actress and singer known for hits such as "Love Don't Cost a Thing" and "If You had My Love," currently stars in the movie "Hustlers," which is generating buzz in Hollywood as a possible Oscar contender.

Colombian singer Shakira is a 3-time Grammy winner, and one of the world's best-selling Latin music stars. She found international fame with her 2006 single "Hips Don't Lie."

Lopez said in a statement she was thrilled to be performing at the show with a fellow Latina. "I can't wait to show what us girls can do on the world's biggest stage," she said.

Shakira said the opportunity was "a true American dream, and we are going to bring the show of a lifetime!"

Rock band Maroon 5 played during last year's halftime show. Other performers have included Lady Gaga, Madonna, Prince and Beyonce.

Justin Timberlake to headline Super Bowl halftime show

Grammy Award-winning pop singer Justin Timberlake will headline the Super Bowl halftime show in February, 14 years after a “wardrobe malfunction” overshadowed his last gig at the championship game, the NFL said on Sunday.

This will mark Timberlake’s third time on the halftime stage, giving the “Can’t Stop The Feeling” singer the distinction of having the most appearances by an individual entertainer, the National Football League said in a statement.

The 10-times Grammy winner last performed at the Super Bowl in 2004 when he infamously ripped off part of Janet Jackson’s garment during their halftime show in Houston and briefly bared her breast.

The incident coined the phrase “wardrobe malfunction”

Beyonce, Bruno Mars heat up Coldplay's Super Bowl halftime show

SANTA CLARA, California - Coldplay headlined at Sunday's Super Bowl halftime show, but it was R&B super stars Beyonce and Bruno Mars who delivered the sizzle with a lively, upbeat production that paid homage to previous halftime performers.

Known mainly for mellow hits, British alt-rockers Coldplay amped up the energy, staging "Viva La Vida" on a colorfully illuminated floor surrounded by dancing violinists.

After Coldplay crowd-pleasers "Paradise" and "Adventure of a Lifetime," a black-leather-clad Mars, who headlined the halftime show in 2014, bounced through "Uptown Funk!," with producer Mark Ronson on DJ decks on stage.

But all eyes were on Beyonce, who gyrated her way through her latest single "Formation" -- a power anthem to race and feminism that made a surprise debut on Saturday.

The music video features powerful images of a flooded New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It also depicts graffiti that reads "stop shooting us," suggestive of the Black Lives Matter movement, which emerged in the wake of killings of unarmed black men, several at the hands of police.

Prior to the game, some fans speculated on social media that Beyonce would deliver a politically charged performance.

But, partnered with Mars on the football field, the tone of the performance was lighter than the video. They subtly conveyed the themes of "Formation" with female dancers dressed in black shorts, crop tops and berets, in what was perceived as an homage to the black nationalist Black Panther Party movement of the 1960s and '70s.

Cedric Betts of Millbrae, California, who saw the performance live at the game, said Beyonce's message was clear. "As black people we have to embrace these moments because it's not often we get them," he said.

An ad immediately following the show announced Beyonce's "Formation" world tour beginning in April, her first major tour in three years.

Before wrapping up one of the signature moments of America's biggest sporting event, Beyonce and Mars joined Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for a quick re-visit to "Uptown Funk!," ending on Coldplay's uplifting ballad "Fix You." Images honored past halftime performers including Stevie Wonder, Black Eyed Peas and the late Michael Jackson, whose military-style wardrobe inspired Beyonce's costume Sunday.

Even for music's biggest stars, the Super Bowl halftime show is the largest stage of their careers, drawing more than 100 million viewers to the live event and lighting up social media.

This year's halftime show garnered a total of 3.9 million tweets. Beyonce dominated the conversation on social media during the halftime performance, with 1.3 million tweets about the singer according to figures from Twitter. Coldplay followed with 774,000 tweets, while Mars garnered 341,000 tweets. The most-tweeted song was "Formation."

Last year, Katy Perry garnered 3 million tweets during her halftime performance.

All three acts of this year's performers quickly became top trends on Twitter, with sentiments towards Coldplay's halftime show measuring overall positive, according to social media analytics firm Zoomph, with twice as many positive tweets than negative tweets.

Meet young Pinoy dancer in Super Bowl half-time show

HOLLYWOOD - A Fil-Am dancer showed off his moves during the Super Bowl half-time show with Katy Perry and Missy Elliot.

Gabe de Guzman is now part of the legendary Super Bowl half-time performance by Missy Eliot and Katy Perry.

"It was such an incredible experience, I just can't explain in words. But I didn't realized the magnitude of it until I stepped on to that stage," he said.

De Guzman initially auditioned for Perry's group and thought at first that he did not get the job. It turns out something better was in store for him.

Perry and Elliot's performance, which include De Guzman, trended nationwide and continues to draw praise to this day.

"When I got the phone call from Missy's choreographer, I was like 'Is this just a dream right now?' I was just like, 'Unbelievable'," he said.

They had only one week of rehearsals in Los Angeles but the California dancer is used to the fast-paced, having previously worked with superstars like Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera and Ariana Grande.

It was a medical condition and watching a dance routine from ABS-CBN shows on TFC that De Guzman gave into dancing.

"I needed to find an indoor activity because I had really bad allergies. But it was just asthma, and my sister she tried to get me dancing. My mom knew I had a passion for dancing because I would jump up and down on her lap at my sister's dance competitions. On my third birthday, I made lots of money doing 'Otso-otso'," he said.

His Filipino parents fully support his dancing career. They drive two hours to take De Guzman to auditions and dance classes in Hollywood.

Though he can't reveal the details yet, De Guzman said there is a chance that he will be a part of a Hollywood television show this year.

Katy Perry brings spectacle to Super Bowl halftime

GLENDALE, Arizona - Katy Perry delivered a spectacular halftime show at the Super Bowl on Sunday assisted by special guests Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz.

Perry entered the field astride a giant, golden, robotic lion as she sang her hit "Roar" before Kravitz brought some rock guitar to a version of "I Kissed a Girl".

After Missy Elliott provided the crowd of over 70,000 with her own distinctive brand of hip-hop, including "Get Ur Freak On", Perry performed on a desert island, singing her hit "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls".

The halftime show ended with another surprise as Perry was lifted 50 feet off the ground by a mechanical contraption and as she floated above the field singing "Firework", sparkling flames emerged from the construction.

Mars gives high-wattage halftime act at Super Bowl

EAST RUTHERFORD -- Accompanied by a light show that featured 80,000 fans with illuminated hats, pop star Bruno Mars rocked the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday with a selection of his hits including "Treasure" and "Runaway Baby."

Dressed in a glittery, '50s style jacket and narrow tie, the bouffant-topped singer danced across the stage as fire effects and fireworks lit up East Rutherford, New Jersey's Met Life Stadium.

He was backed by alternative rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose lead singer Anthony Kiedis strutted out onto the stage shirtless and in shorts even as the temperature dropped to 7 degrees Celsius, belting out the group's 1991 hit "Give it Away."

Mars later rolled on a round stage out to the center of the field to perform "Just the Way You Are," which earned him the first of his two Grammy Awards, completing his performance.

The Hawaiian-born R&B singer follows performers from previous years who include Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen and Prince in singing at what is far and away the most-watched U.S. sporting event.

Mars, whose album "Unorthodox Jukebox" was named best pop vocal album at the 2014 Grammys, had joked that he prepared for the rigors of performing at the first outdoor cold-weather Super Bowl by securing his pompadour hairstyle with "three gallons of hair spray."

Before the game, soprano Renee Fleming delivered a rousing performance of the U.S. national anthem, backed by a symphony orchestra singers from all four branches of the U.S. armed forces and fireworks.

A military color guard marched out while an enormous U.S. flag was unfurled over the field.

Fleming, with four Grammy Awards to her name, was the first opera star to sing the national anthem before the NFL championship, a task that normally falls to a pop singer.

Bruno Mars ready for Super Bowl Halftime Show

NEW YORK – Filipino-American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars has 12 minutes to show the world he has what it takes to perform in front of the biggest audience he’s ever played to on Super Bowl Sunday.

With only four years into his career, the chart-topping Grammy-winning Pinoy was an unexpected choice for the Super Bowl Halftime Show, according to critics.

"I'm just like honored, you know, because some grace has been on that stage. I’m just excited that we’re getting this shot," he said.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show has always been a big spectacle. The National Football League of America has always chosen time-tested headliners such as Madonna, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, Prince, among other iconic performers.

That 12 minute performance can either make or break a star.

"No matter where I perform, my job is to uplift the people," Mars said. "So whether I’m performing at a graduation or a wedding or a Bar Mitzvah, Grammy’s, the Super Bowl, I’m going to give it all I got. Whatever happens, happens. I ain’t scared, if that’s what you think."

When asked about details of his much awaited performance, the Filipino-Puerto Rican mixed artist is not giving away anything to the press at a media conference at the Lincoln Jazz Center in Manhattan.

He added: “I just want the world to watch. It’s only a couple of days away. They can hold tight.”

Mars said he has some concerns with New Jersey’s chilly winter weather come Sunday.

“We just started rehearsing two nights ago, and you never really know what you’re going to expect," he said. "Just like the microphone, it turns into a popsicle and all these things that you don’t really think about going into it, but I’m grabbing the mic and it’s frozen, and get some heaters on everything.”

Mars said the collaboration with Red Hot Chili Peppers was his choice with the blessings of the NFL organizers to raise the stakes of the show.

Mars said, "It’s an honor sharing the stage with them, and they’re one of my personal favorite bands of all time."

"NFL is such a prestigious stage that they give the new guy a shot, and I’m so grateful for that," he said. "No I haven’t been able to take it in, not yet, but come Sunday, I will. I’m going to enjoy myself."

Beyonce to headline Super Bowl halftime show

LOS ANGELES -- Pop superstar Beyonce on Tuesday confirmed that she will headline the entertainment at next year's Super Bowl, posting a photo of herself with the words Feb. 3, 2013 inked on her cheeks.

Super Bowl organizers also posted the photo news on their official Twitter account, with the words "Beyonce will perform @pepsi #SB47 Halftime Show in New Orleans. February 3 2013 on @cbs."

In an entry on her official website, www.beyonce.com, the Grammy-winning singer used the caption "countdown to touchdown" to acknowledge an earlier report that she would sing during the biggest U.S. sporting and television event of the year.

The annual NFL championship attracts more than 100 million TV viewers and high profile pop acts for its halftime show. Previous performers have included Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Paul McCartney.
