New 'Star Wars' breaks first-day record
LOS ANGELES -- "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" raked in an estimated $120.5 million in its first full day in US and Canadian theaters, setting an industry record, Disney said Saturday.
The movie is likely to become the highest grossing film in an opening weekend Disney added, while reporting that it had already made $250 million globally.
The latest Star Wars installment easily overtook "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which had held the opening-day record at $91 million.
The highly anticipated space epic already smashed the opening night record in the United States and Canada when it grossed $57 million Thursday. It crushed the previous record -- $43.5 million -- set in 2011 by the same "Harry Potter" film.
Disney said that the strong showing for the latest "Star Wars," which is playing at 4,134 North American theaters, "keeps us forecasting an opening weekend near $220 million."
That would set a record and beat the current opening weekend title holder, "Jurassic World," which premiered earlier this year to $208.8 million at the box office.
"The Force Awakens," which has had its legions of fans frothing at the mouth ever since its mooted release, has grossed an estimated $129.5 million internationally since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
Analysts predict that the seventh installment of the iconic space saga, which cost Disney an estimated $200 million to produce, could become the biggest film of all time.
As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record -- "Avatar" ($2.78 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.18 billion).
"The potential for 'The Force Awakens' to ultimately break into the $2-billion club worldwide is certainly in the realm of possibility," said Paul Dergarabedian, of box office tracker Rentrak.

New 'Star Wars' smashes box-office record
LOS ANGELES, United States - "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" smashed the opening night record in the United States and Canada and was poised to become one of the biggest grossing movies ever, industry experts said Friday.
The latest instalment of the highly anticipated space epic raked in $57 million for its opening night Thursday, easily beating the previous record -- $43.5 million -- held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" in 2011.
Disney gushed that combined with Friday figures, ticket sales "are pointing to a total day of $100M+ for a new industry record... and the first triple-digit-million day ever!"
The "Harry Potter" film holds the all-time record for opening day at $91 million but the new "Star Wars" -- which has had rave reviews and even saw Stormtroopers "invade" the White House on Friday -- is expected to also force it out of that slot.
"This represents a new record for the industry and portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film," said Paul Dergarabedian, of box office tracker Rentrak.
"The Force Awakens," which has had its legions of fans frothing at the mouth ever since its mooted release, has grossed at least $130 million worldwide since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
Analysts predict that the seventh instalment of the iconic space saga, which cost Disney an estimated $200 million to produce, could score the biggest opening weekend ever and could even become the biggest film of all time.
"We appear to be headed for $200M+ through Sunday and the possibility of an all-time weekend record," Disney said.
The opening weekend record is currently held by "Jurassic World," which premiered earlier this year to $208.8 million at the box office.
As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record -- "Avatar" ($2.78 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.18 billion).
"The potential for 'The Force Awakens' to ultimately break into the $2 billion club worldwide is certainly in the realm of possibility," Dergarabedian said.
- 'Join $2 billion club' –
Jeff Bock, box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations, said: "As far as breaking records go, it’s the strongest candidate we've seen in a long, long time.
"It might join the $2 billion club worldwide, and maybe, just maybe, be the highest grossing film of all-time."
Disney, which bought the rights to the "Star Wars" franchise from its creator George Lucas for $4 billion in 2012, has built up the hype around "The Force Awakens," rolling out a well-orchestrated marketing campaign that has left fans wanting more.
Early reviews of the movie have given it a big thumbs-up and three more instalments are due in the coming years.
"The Force Awakens" picks up the intergalactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from "The Return of the Jedi," the finale of the original trilogy.
The trio of heroes who appeared in the first of the blockbusters in 1977 -- smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), leader of the rebel alliance, and her twin brother Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) -- are all back and played by the actors that Star Wars first made famous.
The film is being screened in 4,134 theaters in North America, a record for a December opening.
- White House joins hoopla –
Even the White House was getting into the "Star Wars" hoopla.
A gaggle of Stormtroopers and the droid R2-D2 were spotted in the West Wing on Friday -- there was a screening of "Star Wars" for people who lost family in the Iraq war.
Giving an end-of-year press conference, President Barack Obama revealed he too was swept up by the mania.
"Clearly, this is not the most important thing that's taking place in the White House today," he joked.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest also appeared unannounced at the lectern of the briefing room, flanked by Stormtroopers.

Facebook's Zuckerberg posts 'Star Wars' photo of daughter
The force is strong on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his barely a month old daughter, Max.
Zuckerberg had a photoshoot of sorts featuring Max bundled in Jedi regalia, surrounded by toy versions of Chewbacca, Darth Vader, BB-8 and a lightsaber.
The Facebook post has garnered 1.3 million reactions and nearly 30,000 shares, and still counting.
The photo also prompted some Facebook users to comment using the photos of other tots in 'Star Wars' costumes.

'The Force Awakens' premiere honors 'Star Wars' creator Lucas
LOS ANGELES - With Stormtroopers and lightsabers, Disney's much-anticipated "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" made its debut with a star-studded premiere on Monday, and the attention was all on one man at the center of it all - creator George Lucas.
The man who created the entire "Star Wars" world received a standing ovation from the audience at a Hollywood movie theater as he sat next to his long-time collaborator Steven Spielberg.
"None of us would be here tonight without the miraculous creation of one man. George Lucas, from the bottom of my heart, on behalf of everyone involved in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' thank you sir," said J.J. Abrams, the film's director.
Out in theaters on Friday, "The Force Awakens" follows tenacious scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley) as her fate becomes intertwined with that of rebel Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) and a ball-like droid named BB-8.
Set 30 years after "Return of the Jedi", which came out in 1983, the film also sees the return of franchise veterans Han Solo (Harrison Ford), General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
Skywalker's glaring absence from the film's marketing is intentional to avoid giving away a crucial plot twist.
Lucas sold "Star Wars" to Disney in 2012 for $4.05 billion dollars, and "The Force Awakens" is the first of a new trilogy and new standalone films from the studio.
Abrams, a self-described "Star Wars" fanboy, told Reuters he was feeling the pressure of releasing the film into the world.
"There are certainly nerves showing the movie to 1,000-plus people tonight but I feel very confident in the work that was done by the actors. So, if nothing else, I know people will enjoy watching their performances," he said.
Hamill said the new film can't live up to the expectations of the devoted "Star Wars" fan base.
"It's only a movie and if you think you're going to go into the movie and recapture your childhood you're setting yourself up for disappointment," he said.
Reviews of the new film are embargoed until Wednesday but at the premiere screening, the audience were in high spirits, often cheering when familiar faces popped up on screen.
Early reactions on Twitter were positive, with Los Angeles Times reporter Glenn Whipp saying "Quite simply: This is the STAR WARS movie you're looking for."
