Affordable Gifts

CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines (PIA) – In observance of Valentine’s Day, offices of the Philippine Postal Corporation in Cebu offered to the public items at very affordable prices including fresh flowers, chocolates, stuffed Teddy Bears toys, among other gifts. At the same time, PhilPost also offered personal delivery of any of said gift items door-to-door and free of charge. PhilPost’s Valentines-related services is an annual offering by the agency every Valentine’s Day around the country starting 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Our clients are increasing every year and they order fresh flowers, chocolates and other gift items because our rates are much cheaper.

Academic Exchanges

CATARMAN, Northern Samar – The University of Eastern Philippines (UEP), Northern Samar has linked up with the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) in Lahore, Pakistan for collaborative efforts in conducting research on environmental toxicology and designing scientific models to control pollutants. This was learned from Romula Obleopas, UEP Publication and Media Affairs Office. These commitments of UEP and UVAS were formally expressed in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the signing of which highlighted the two-day International Conference on Toxicology in the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, last January 26-27, 2012.

Maasin Mangroves

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte (PIA) – The police here has started planting at least 750 mangrove seedlings in the province in support of the national government’s National Greening Program. Police Supt. Hector Enage said each of the 52 organic police officers and staff in the police station are required to plant at least six trees every month for a year. Earlier this month they planted 500 mangrove trees in Barangay Pasay in Maasin City along with barangay officials.

Solar Energy

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) – Some 75 houses located in off-grid areas in Negros Oriental are expected to be lighted up using solar energy during the first quarter of this year. Said houses are located in off-grid areas in Vallehermoso, La Libertad and Guihulngan towns which are within the coverage area of Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative I (NORECO I). Solar home system technology will be installed in 25 houses in each of the three towns. Off-grid areas are places situated in remote hinterland areas that are not connected to the power transmission grid.

Jovita Fuentes

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) – Pop and classical music will take center stage here in a tribute to Ms. Jovita Fuentes, the great CapiceƱa diva, on her natal day Wednesday. The hour-long “Jovita Fuentes Cultural Show” will feature students who have won in school-based provincial level singing contests. The show is part of the month-long Provincial Arts Month celebration. Selected soprano singers in the province who performed in a tribute to Fuentes last year have also been invited to perform the CapiceƱas’ compositions and other Tagalog classical songs. A resolution has been passed by the Roxas City Council marking February 15 as Jovita Fuentes Day in the city.
