Gionee, a Chinese mobile phone brand that's making its mark in the
global phone market, continues to introduce new models to the Philippine
market like the Gpad G5 phablet and the Elife Mini 7 smartphone.
At first glance, the Gpad G5 impresses with its size. Measuring
157.3x77.6x7.9mm and weighing 104.6 grams, you could say the G5 is a
mobile workhorse. For one, its 2400mAh battery is expected to deliver up
to 288 hours of standby time, up to 15 hours of talk time on 2G, and up
to 12 hours talk time on 3G.
Operating the Gpad 5 requires some adjustment because of the bigger
size compared to the smaller smartphones. Users with a small grip would
find it a bit hard to handle the Gpad 5. Nevertheless, Filipinos don’t
seem to mind this. Just observe the millennials who are playing their
5.5-inch smartphones in coffee shops, restaurants, buses and even while
walking.
With dual-SIM functionality, running on Android 4.4 KitKat
out-of-the-box operating system, the G5 gives users convenience by
having greater access to contacts and they can also watch videos in HD.
The surface is ensured to be scratch-proof thanks to the AGC Dragontrail
glass protection.
The G5 comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and a
2-megapixel front facing camera. It has 8GB of inbuilt storage with that
can be expanded up to 32GB.
For seamless connection, the G5 has 3G, GPRS/ EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
4.0, GPS/A-GPS. For music lovers, it has FM radio connectivity and also
sports dual crystal loud speaker with DTS.
While the G5 has definitely good features, it is competing in a very
tough category. But after having used G5, it is absolutely a good buy.
Elfie Mini
Just like the Elife 5.5 endorsed by screen siren Ellen Adarna, the Elife E7 is equally sexy, inside and out. Internally, E7 is guaranteed to deliver powerful performance thanks to an octa-core processor. Watching videos on the E7 is a pleasure with its 4.7-inch 720p IGZO display from Sharp. Although the resolution of the screen is not full HD, the E7 still manages to deliver higher pixel density due to the comparatively smaller screen size.
On the outside, one can notice Elife E7 has exquisite design and quality. The company has been able to give E7 a classy look even if it’s made of plastic. Resembling a rectangular bar with rounded top and bottom edges and flat side edges, the E7 can give branded models a run for their money in terms of loooks.
With a smaller frame, it is easy to handle, especially for people with average-sized hands. The front panel below the swivel camera features glass and adds to its attractive look.
User convenience is greatly considered with the power and volume rocker keys conveniently located at the right edge. The micro-USB port and 3.5mm headset jack are placed at the bottom edge. The left edge has the micro-SIM tray that cleverly houses two slots.
The swivel camera sits above the display, joining the top edge of the phone. It also houses the earpiece. The swivel can be easily twisted to bring the camera lens to the front. However, you'll need to rotate it back the opposite way as it doesn't move 360-degree.
Gionee claims that it has tested the swivel for several thousand rotations. During use, we never had problems with it and rotation was pretty smooth. Still, it remains to be seen how it will stand the test of time and wear and tear. The swivel lets one use the 13MP lens as the rear camera as well as the front one.
Overall, Gionee Elife E7 Mini looks and feels like a premium smartphone.
