8th Harry Potter book coming out

BOSTON, Mass. - Harry Potter, the boy wizard hero of a series of best-selling books and hit movies, will return to British and U.S. bookstores this summer with the release of the script for an upcoming London stage play that chronicles Potter's adult life.

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" depicts the hero as an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic and father of three children who is grappling "with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs," the Scholastic Corp publisher said on Wednesday.

The play is partly written by J.K. Rowling, author of the Potter books, and will have its debut in London on July 30. It will be presented in two parts, designed to be viewed over two nights or in two performances on the same day.

The book will be released on July 31 in the United States and Canada, Scholastic said. Little, Brown will be publishing the script simultaneously in the United Kingdom.

Billed as a "special rehearsal edition," the first printing of the script may vary from what is seen on stage in London, Scholastic said, noting that a second edition will be published with the final script.

The seven Harry Potter books concluded with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in 2007 as Potter finally defeated his nemesis, the evil wizard Lord Voldemort. Eight feature films were produced, with the final book presented in two movies.

More than 450 million copies of the Harry Potter books have been sold worldwide in 79 languages and the movies have grossed more than $7 billion worldwide. Rowling's wizarding world also inspired an area the Universal Orlando theme park.

Radcliffe of 'Harry Potter' fame gets Hollywood star

LOS ANGELES, United States - British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who rocketed to fame in the "Harry Potter" films, said Thursday he was "in awe" as he got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

"A few months ago, I was walking along here with a couple of friends and just becoming sort of in awe and slightly overwhelmed by the names I was going to be joining," said the 26-year-old, who was presented with the 2,565th star.

"Growing up in England, you hear the word Hollywood and right after, you picture the sign on the hill, you picture these stars."

Radcliffe, who played the boy wizard in the wildly popular eight-film blockbuster "Potter" franchise before moving on to more adult roles, was in Los Angeles to promote his new movie "Victor Frankenstein."

In the film, which opens in the United States later this month, he plays assistant Igor to the mad scientist obsessed with creating life, portrayed by James McAvoy.

Radcliffe is one of the rare child stars to have successfully maintained his career as he moved into adulthood.

He has starred in a number of films since finishing up as Potter, including "The Woman in Black" and "Kill Your Darlings." He also had a cameo in this year's comedy hit "Trainwreck."

Radcliffe has appeared on Broadway, notably in the musical comedy "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and the psycho-drama "Equus," in which he stunned fans by disrobing on stage.

Radcliffe admits being drunk during 'Harry Potter' scenes

LOS ANGELES - Daniel Radcliffe admitted he was drunk while filming some scenes for the "Harry Potter" movies during a period in his life where he was drinking "nightly," the young star said in an interview.

"I have a very addictive personality. It was a problem. People with problems like that are very adept at hiding it. It was bad. I don't want to go into details, but I drank a lot and it was daily - I mean nightly," Radcliffe said to British celebrity news magazine Heat earlier this week.

"I can honestly say I never drank at work on 'Harry Potter.' I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work. I can point to many scenes where I'm just gone. Dead behind the eyes," the 22-year-old actor said.

The young British star, who was propelled to fame at 11 years old after being cast to play boy wizard Harry Potter in the movies based on J.K. Rowling's best-selling novels, discussed his "very busy personality" and also talked about his production-assistant girlfriend, who he said was "a wonderful, wonderful girl, who's far too good for me."

"I can also be quite insecure. A lot of actors have self-doubt. I live under that the whole time, and it's how I function best. I think she puts up with a lot; she says she doesn't," said Radcliffe.

The "Harry Potter" star, who has received critical praise for his theater work in the Broadway and West End productions "Equus" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," is currently on the promotional rounds for his film, "The Woman in Black," out in US theaters on Friday.

Radcliffe leaves Potter behind with horror film

LOS ANGELES - For more than a decade, Daniel Radcliffe was known the world over as the owlish waif in the massively successful "Harry Potter" films -- based on the equally popular book series by JK Rowling.

Now, the young actor is turning a page.

A child prodigy no more, the 22-year old Radcliffe now is stepping out in grown-up film roles. His first post-Potter film, which opens this week, is the neo-Gothic horror movie "The Woman in Black."

Radcliffe told AFP that he fell in love with the script, which he read for the first time just a few hours after shooting the last frames of his final "Harry Potter" film.

"It was such a brilliantly written script," he said.

"Normally, if you get a script which has a lot of stage directions, it can be quite hard to read, but I just flew through it -- it was so frightening. You could tell it was going to be scary," he said.

"That was for me the principal reason to do it," said Radcliffe. "It was a really compelling story."

"The Woman in Black" -- a co-production between Canada, Britain and Sweden, directed by British filmmaker James Watkins -- debuts Friday throughout North America and opens in Europe beginning next week.

A supernatural thriller set in the 1920s, the movie is about a young widowed lawyer sent to an eerie estate to settle the affairs of a recently deceased dowager.

He begins to investigate the mysterious drowning years earlier of the elderly woman's young son, and uncovers the startling mystery of numerous unexplained deaths of young people in the neighboring village.

Radcliffe said he was drawn to the project not just by the script, but also by the message that underlies the grim storyline.

"It's about how death and grief affect people in different ways," he said. "It's a horror film, but driven by characters."

The role is a huge departure from his persona as boy wizard in the eight-film, billion-dollar "Potter" franchise, but it allows him to make a clean break and avoid the peril that faces all successful actors -- becoming typecast as their last character.

"I think I have to accept that for some people I'm always going to be Harry Potter, some people will never want to see me in other ways," he told AFP.

"But you know, some people already see me as just an actor, and so I just have to keep trying to make people see me as a true actor and not as a character."

He feels surprisingly little grief about laying the boy wizard role to rest, and is determined to mix it up as much as he can -- trying as many different types of roles on for size as he can.

Last year, for instance, Radcliffe tried his hand at musical comedy, appearing in the hit Broadway production of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

A few years ago, in an earlier turn on New York's "Great White Way," Radcliffe stunned his fans by disrobing on stage in the starring role of the psycho-drama "Equus."

Soon he'll begin work on "Kill Your Darlings," a true-life murder story in which he co-stars as poet Allen Ginsberg.

He acknowledged that relinquishing Harry Potter, the role of a lifetime, will be neither quick nor easy.

"I think I'm going to be breaking away for probably the next years. I think it will take a little time for people, to say, 'Oh, he has now established himself in a career outside Potter,'" he said.

"That's what I want to do, and that sort of takes time. It's not going to happen with just one play or just one film, unfortunately," he continued.

"It's going to be a combination of two or three years' hard work. If I succeed in that, I have confidence that I will."

Not that Radcliffe is complaining. Thanks to his decade as Harry Potter, Radcliffe has garnered worldwide fame and fabulous riches, and is estimated to be worth about $80 million.

"I have many more opportunities than most actors do, to play great parts, because of the status that Harry Potter has given me," he acknowledged.

"I think generally speaking, I just have to be grateful for the opportunities it's given me," Radcliffe said. — Agence France Presse

LOS ANGELES - "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe was named Entertainment Weekly's "Entertainer of the Year" on Wednesday, capping a successful 2011 for the young actor.

Radcliffe, 22, took his final turn as the boy wizard in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," the last installment of the film franchise, earlier this year.

The film crossed the $1 billion threshold at the global box office as fans rushed to see their favorite wizard battle evil for the last time.

The "Harry Potter" star also broke out of his magical role to take on Broadway in the musical "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying," stepping into the shoes of stage veterans Robert Morse and Matthew Broderick and receiving positive critical reviews for his performance.
