Max's Group to merge Krispy Kreme, Jamba Juice units

MANILA -- Max's Group said Wednesday it secured the Securities and Exchange Commission's approval to merge its two units that operate Krispy Kreme and Jamba Juice in the Philippines.

The Real American Doughnut Company will be the surviving entity when it merges with Fresh Healthy Juice Boosters, the restaurant operator told the stock exchange.

"The resulting transaction is aligned with on-going reorganization initiatives to maximize operational synergies across the business and does not adversely impact existing shareholders," Max's said.

Max's earlier merged its Teriyaki Boy and Yellow Cab businesses as part of an ongoing corporate reorganization.

Max's Group to open more stores in PH, overseas

MANILA, Philippines - Max's Group is planning to open more stores in the country and overseas next year, mostly for its key brands Max's, Pancake House, Yellow Cab and Krispy Kreme.

In an interview on ANC, Max's Group president Robert Trota said the strategic expansion will boost the company's revenues next year, amid heavy competition.

The Max's Group raised P3.5 billion from its follow-on shares offer today, for its capital expenditures, expansion and debt payments next year.

"For 2015, we plan to roll out 68 stores, a combination of Max's, Pancake House, Yellow Cab and Krispy Kreme... But the primary expansion is the star brands," Trota said.

For its overseas expansion, Max's Group said they plan to open 10 new stores -- 3 in North America, 5 in the Middle East and 2 in Malaysia.

"Abroad, we're planning to roll out 10 new stores in the US, Middle East and Malaysia, so we are using Max's, Pancake and Yellow Cab to expand abroad," he added.

The first Yellow Cab restaurant will open in Saudi Arabia in the first quarter of 2015, Trota said.

Max's Group currently has 15 stores overseas, including 12 in North America and 3 in the Middle East.

The Max's Group is targeting Filipinos, many of whom have resided abroad for more than 20 years.

Krispy Kreme gives in, offers version of 'cronut'

MANILA – The local franchise of the American donut chain Krispy Kreme has finally given in to the “cronut” craze in the country.

Reacting to the popularity of the donut-croissant hybrid here, Krispy Kreme Philippines announced on Thursday that it will start offering its version of the cronut in all of its Luzon branches.

The Baked Krispy Kroissant was described by the company as “our very own version of the food craze that is half doughnut and half croissant, rolled in sugar filled with pastry cream, and topped with select ingredients to excite your palate.”

The pastries come in chocolate, strawberry, apple cinnamon and vanilla cream flavors.

Krispy Kreme Philippines is one of the late entrants to the cronut race in Manila, which already includes franchises such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Chatime, hotels such as InterContinental Manila, and local joints like Dolcelatte.

The first to introduce a version of the hybrid pastry to the local crowd is Wildflour Café + Bakery, a relatively new dining spot in Taguig City that has been getting raves for its breads and other breakfast items.

Each brand here has come up with another name for the cronut to avoid being sued by the pastry’s original creator, Dominique Ansel of New York.
