Russian chefs in naked lockdown protest after virus strips them of income

MOSCOW - Russian restaurant owners stripped of their income by the coronavirus lockdown are campaigning for their businesses to be allowed to reopen by posting pictures of themselves naked on social media.

Hundreds of bar, restaurant and cafe employees have posted photographs of themselves naked with carefully positioned plates, cups, saucepans, bottles, bar stools and napkin holders.

Their demand is for authorities to allow them to start serving clients as the country gradually eases measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

"We are naked because we are left with nothing," said Arthur Galaychyuk, owner of the Relab Family bar chain in the city of Kazan, whose 20 employees took part in the campaign.

Restaurants in Kazan will be allowed to open their summer terraces on June 11 after more than two months of lockdown.

"We don't want to stage a strip show or to fool around, we only want one thing - to work!" said Pavel, a chef from the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, in a post with a group picture of his colleagues wearing only masks and holding kitchenware.

"We don't pose more of a risk than supermarkets, shopping malls, hair salons or public transport," the post said.

Authorities in Novosibirsk have not announced when local restaurants can open.

President Vladimir Putin ordered strict lockdown measures at the end of March shutting all businesses except food stores and pharmacies. The country's regions were allowed to adjust the measures depending on the situation on the ground.

Moscow is in the process of lifting the lockdown and many businesses, including shopping malls, book stores and beauty salons have reopened.

The Russian capital plans to allow cafes and restaurants to open their outside terraces later in June before reopening fully from June 23. Indoor restaurants and bars remain closed in other parts of Russia.

Shakey's PH now offering frozen mojos in supermarkets

MANILA -- You may want to add Shakey's frozen mojos to your cart in your next grocery run.

This as Shakey's Philippines announced Monday that its best-selling potatoes are now available in ready-to-cook packs at select Robinsons Supermarkets at P375 each.

In a Facebook post, the restaurant chain also suggested a "mojos hack" that involves rinsing the potato slices before coating with your preferred breading mix and frying.

The frozen mojo packs only include sliced potatoes, but Shakey's Philippines suggested a homemade breading mix recipe that includes garlic powder, all-purpose flour, black pepper, salt, paprika, and thyme.

"Want it crisp and tasty? Follow these 3 easy steps!" it said.

Shakey's Philippines made the announcement more than a month after its Japan counterpart released a recipe for mojos which involved microwaving the spuds first before frying.

This humble, ‘no utensils’ restaurant inside UP campus is celebrity-approved

MANILA – There is no air conditioning and no utensils at Gubat – but this humble restaurant inside the University of the Philippines Diliman campus in Quezon City is loved by many, including newly married celebrities Megan Young and Mikael Daez.

Young revealed that Gubat is one of their favorite dining spots as she shared photos from her 30th birthday lunch at the restaurant.

“You’ll find them in the UP Campus at the Diliman Bonsai Society. What I love about this place is that there are no utensils – magkakamay ka lang,” said the Miss World 2013 titleholder, who also praised the staff of Gubat for always having “such a bright aura.”

“We ordered adobo, fish, and two orders of lechon kawali. The buro side dish is the best thing ever,” she added.

These live music venues will make your gig-watching life a little more extra

No, we’re not talking about restaurants or bars that happen to have live bands. We’re not talking about cafes that will just let in any Sitti-sounding busker to strum a tune within its walls. We’re talking honest-to-God gig venues, dude. Front row seats to culture. Places whose small shows can go toe to toe with any big concert.

This is, in no way, an exhaustive list. But if you’re stuck on the usual circuit—including but not limited to Route 196, Saguijo, Mows, 70s Bistro, or the parts of Poblacion where everybody spins but are just way too crowded some nights—these spaces can get you out of your rut, and make your gig-going lifestyle a little more interesting.

Jess & Pat’s

What makes Jess & Pat’s really cool as a venue is what some people might find lame about it. It doesn’t serve alcohol, its gig lineups mostly consist of either acoustic acts or acts that never go too heavy, and the gigs never end very late. Before 1am, the show’s done. This is obviously not a party animal’s watering hole. But for an audience who just wants their live music fix without the head-pounding buzz of alcohol, the stench of yosi, or the aura emanated by hipsters who go out just to be seen, Jess & Pat’s is perfect. Mellow enough for the whole family, lively enough to get you clapping and singing along.

Acts that have played here: Munimuni, Kaleidoscope Eyes, Over October

Address: 2/F 63 Maginhawa Street, UP Village, Quezon City

123 Block

When you think of Mandaluyong you don’t normally think, “Oh, yeah, that part of Metro Manila is poppin’.” Odds are you think of Megamall and Podium, which are in Ortigas, god, get it together dude. And look, I was that person too, until I found out that Mandaluyong has one truly amazing thing going for it. It has 123 Block. It’s a two-floor venue that acts as a co-working space but also acts as an event space, whether the events are book fairs, candle-making workshops, or gigs. And when it’s a gig, it’s a real sight to behold. A crowd pools around the first floor’s elevated stage, and when the audience is big enough, the crowd clings to the staircase like vines, and extends to the second floor, where gig-goers can watch from above. They also serve kombucha.

Acts that have played here: half-lit, BLKD x Calix, Ciudad

Address: 123 Pioneer Street, Mandaluyong

Handlebar Bar & Grill

The part of Poblacion where the old Hell’s Angels coots hang. It’s a bar with the swagger of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and the scent of a leather jacket older than your nephew. Come for the classic blues and rock shows — and rugby match nights — stay for the lamb roast.

Acts that have played here: Kjwan, Blue Rats, Basti Artadi

Address: 31 Polaris Street, Poblacion, Makati

12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub

I don’t know when or how it happened but the 12 Monkeys that used to stand in Century Mall is now a mall chapel. That’s fine though. It was out of the way anyway — at least for a QC boy like me — and I’m too used to seeing Century Mall as the unofficial turf of The Rest Is Noise. The good news is: We still have El Pueblo, where the OG 12 Monkeys venue stands. What’s interesting about 12 Monkeys is that out of almost every other venue, it’s here where you can normally find your OPM favorites of the early 2000s. True Faith! Side A! Brownman Revival! MYMP! I’m talkin’ the Myx veterans, the lowkey legends who walk among us. Head to 12 Monkeys if you feel like jumping into a time machine that can bring you back a decade or two.

Acts that have played here: True Faith, MYMP, Brownman Revival, Side A, Barbie Almalbis, Hale, Mayonnaise

Address: El Pueblo, Ortigas, Pasig

The Rooftop

Look for the door in front of Katipunan’s Center of Culinary Arts. Don’t get distracted by the collegiate cacophony going on next door and Pop-Up, which is a madhouse. Instead, patiently ascend the flights of stairs that’ll get you to The Rooftop, where DJs play dance and house in the late afternoon as beats carry you from sunset to cool evening. Personally speaking, the last time I was at Rooftop, I got so drunk my gait was reduced to a walk-of-shame shuffle, so have something to eat first. Then drink, then be merry.

Acts that have played here: LM900, Doughboy, Cisco Disco, Thirstkid

Address: 287 Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City

20:20

I know everybody knows about 20:20. But I think the outdated notion that clubs are different from gig venues still persists. A club is a gig venue. DJs are musicians. And whenever 20:20 does Circus 20:20, which is probably the closest thing to Meiday you can get these days—what with the free entrance and the crazy acts and a crowd dead-set on wilding out, it’s one of the best gig places you can treat yourself to. So make Circus a part of your monthly routine, and put 20:20 on your map for that reason.

Acts that have played here: CRWN, Jason Dhakal, Local Sun

Address: 20a La Fuerza Plaza 1, 2241 Don Chino Roces Avenue, Makati

Catch 272

Catch 272 has been around for a while but it’s on this article for three reasons. 1) Makati gets way too much attention with all its clubs and expensive food and snobby Manileños (like me) stinking up the place with gentrification. Quezon City deserves love too, and Catch 272 is the pearl of Kamuning. 2) The drinks are amazing and affordable. The most bang-for-your-buck cocktail menu you’ll ever see is here. And the bartenders are friendly too! 3) It’s a safe space. Reviews and friendly management will let you know that the bar is explicitly LGBT+ friendly. Out of every venue on this list, Catch 272 is the one with the makings of a second home.

Acts that have played here: Búeni, Pamcy, Alyana Cabral, Sleep Kitchen

Address: 41-B T. Gener, Kamuning, Quezon City

McFlurry lids to go in Europe as McDonald's moves away from plastic

BRUSSELS — Fast food giant McDonald's is speeding up its move to minimize the use of plastic in its restaurants in Europe, where legislation on single-use items is becoming increasingly restrictive.

The US burger behemoth announced Thursday the introduction of new packaging in all its restaurants in Europe by the end of 2020 for the McFlurry, an ice cream dessert currently served in a disposable cup with a thick plastic lid.

The new packaging does away with the need for the lid, McDonald's says, estimating that the change will save more than 1,200 tons of plastic a year in Europe.

The European Union is implementing stronger legislation to try to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills, with a ban on around a dozen non-recyclable items including drinks straws set to come into force in 2021.

Other measures from McDonald's include replacing plastic lids on drinks with a fiber-based alternative in France, a key European market for the company, saving some 1,100 tonnes of plastic per year.

"We have a goal to have all of our packaging from renewable resources by 2025, and also a goal to recycle in every single one of our 37,000 restaurants around the globe by 2025," the McDonald's vice president for sustainability Keith Kenny told AFP.

Plastic is used in 12 percent of McDonald's packaging in Europe, the company says, with 60 percent of restaurants in the 8 biggest markets offering customer recycling facilities.

In the UK, the company is testing a scheme in some restaurants to let customers return used Happy Meal toys.

"We know that perhaps we're going to market with imperfect solutions, but our customers will give us credit for that and we continue to develop and improve them as we learn more and we get customers' feedback and we improve the process," Kenny said.

Major corporations, often criticized by campaigners for putting profit before the environment, are trying to respond to growing pressure from consumers for more responsible practices.

Food and cosmetics giant Unilever announced last month that it will cut its use of new plastic in packaging by half by 2025, acknowledging that the move was partly aimed at young, more environmentally conscious customers.

In May 2017 the campaign group Zero Waste France published a report criticizing McDonald's approach to waste.

McDonald's CEO out after 'consensual relationship' with employee

NEW YORK — McDonald's announced Sunday that president and CEO Steve Easterbrook was out after showing "poor judgment" by engaging in a "consensual relationship" with an employee.

Easterbrook was replaced by Chris Kempczinski, the president of McDonald's USA. Kempczinski was also elected to the board of directors.

"Easterbrook... has separated from the company following the board's determination that he violated company policy and demonstrated poor judgment involving a recent consensual relationship with an employee," the company said in a statement.

There were no additional details of his ouster, and whether he was fired or allowed to resign.

Kempczinski "has the right mix of skills and experience to lead us forward having run our US business, where franchisees are delivering strong financial and operational results, and overseen global strategy, business development and innovation," the company quoted Enrique Hernandez Jr, chairman of McDonald's board of directors, as saying.

In its most recent earnings report, on October 22, McDonald's said profits dipped 1.8 percent in the third quarter from the year-ago period to $1.6 billion. Revenues edged up 1.1 percent to $5.4 billion.

The fast-food giant notched a healthy 5.9 percent increase in global comparable sales, including a solid rise in the United States.

But profits were pressured by increased spending on technology and research and development.

McDonald's has invested heavily in home-delivery and mobile pay initiatives in recent years, and in 2019 has unveiled a number of acquisitions to boost its drive-through operation.

Disgraced US chef Mario Batali surrenders restaurants

NEW YORK -- US celebrity chef Mario Batali has sold his stake in all of his restaurants after being accused of sexual assault by several women, the businesses announced Wednesday.

"We wanted to let you all know that Mario is now fully divested from our businesses. This week, we acquired all of his interests in our restaurants," decades-long Batali partners Tanya and Joe Bastianich wrote in a letter to employees seen by AFP.

The siblings confirmed the dissolution of the Batali and Bastianich Hospitality Group, estimated to be worth $250 million, and the subsequent creation of a new company.

Batali, who often refers to his Italian heritage for culinary inspiration, also negotiated the sale of his part in the chain of gargantuan Eataly food stores, which no longer sell his line of sauces or his 11 cookbooks.

New York police closed an investigation into 58-year-old Batali in January without filing charges.

An employee accused him last year of having assaulted her in 2005 at one of his 26 restaurants, The Spotted Pig, a fashionable New York spot favorited by celebrities.

The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed the chef drugged her and assaulted her, adding that when she came to there was semen on her clothing.

She went to hospital and called the police, but ultimately decided against filing a complaint and the physical evidence produced at the hospital wasn't kept.

Batali denies the allegations.

An employee at The Spotted Pig claimed to have witnessed a similar incident in 2008 through the restaurant's security cameras in which employees had to intervene to stop an assault against a woman who was unconscious.

The once-prestigious chef, known for his red ponytail and orange Croc shoes, had already been accused of sexual harassment and inappropriate touching.

Those allegations led him to apologize publicly for making "many mistakes" and to take a sidelined role at his businesses and leave "The Chew" television program, but he initially hung on to the restaurants.

Denny's to open 20 more branches in PH

MANILA – American restaurant chain Denny’s continues its expansion in the Philippines as it plans to open more restaurants in the country.

Denny’s has amended its development agreement with The Bistro Group, which has opened six restaurants since becoming a franchisee in late 2015.

The amendment expands The Bistro Group’s existing development commitment by an additional 20 branches.

“The exciting growth enjoyed by a newer franchisee like The Bistro Group in the Philippines demonstrates the strength of the Denny’s brand beyond North America,” John Miller, president and CEO of Denny’s, said in a statement.

Aside from the Philippines, Denny’s also plans to strengthen its presence in Canada by opening 30 more restaurants.

Denny’s first branch in the Philippines is located at Uptown Parade in Taguig. It opened in late 2016.

Filipino food showcased in Asian food hall in London

LONDON - An Asian food hall in northwest London features Filipino flavors.

Manila Kitchen joins 25 other businesses at the Bang Bang Oriental food hall, situated in Colindale.

The restaurant, which opened in October 2017, offers traditional Filipino classics like kare-kare, chicken inasal, ginataang gulay, bangsilog, and halo-halo, as well as several other dishes with a modern twist.

It is owned and managed by Marc Malata – a chef whose passion for food came from his parents, Mario and Cathy of the restaurant Lutong Pinoy in Earls Court, west London.

The 28-year-old Malata told ABS-CBN Europe that he wanted to branch out. He saw Bang Bang Oriental, which opened last July, as a good opportunity to promote Filipino food to other communities.

“We thought it would be nice to try and make Filipino food more mainstream, and we felt there was no better place than an Oriental food court,” Malata said.

“Different people from other backgrounds try our cuisine to see what Filipino cuisine is all about. The fact that people are trying our food and we’re getting a good response is really good,” he added.

Manila Kitchen’s most popular dishes are the Filipino Brunch, which is a mix of lechon kawali, pork tocino, and a fried egg; and Boy Baboy, a mixed pork dish with grilled pork belly and spring rolls.

“We also have our modern dishes which we wanted to aim at the younger generations of Filipinos, like tocino and egg burger, tocino cheese fries, Filipino pork burger, ube cake, and custard,” Malata said.

The Bang Bang Oriental complex is the largest Asian food hall in London and seats up to 450 people. It houses shops specializing in cuisines from countries like China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

Despite the fact that Filipino food is not as well-known or popular as other cuisines, Manila Kitchen’s assistant manager Dawn Dayrit is encouraged by the response they have already received.

“We do get a lot of people who haven’t even tried Filipino food who say, ‘We haven’t had anything, what do you recommend?’”

“After they finish their meals, they come back and say, ‘The meal was amazing, thank you,’ and that they will be coming back another time,” Dayrit said.

“We’ve also had customers who have been to the Philippines but have never had Filipino food back here in London. So when they see us, they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, I had this in the Philippines!’ They get quite excited when they see they can order it here, so that is quite good,” she added.

In an e-mail, Bang Bang Oriental’s marketing manager Ying-Chu Chen revealed that prior to Manila Kitchen’s arrival, they received online feedback from customers saying that a Filipino option was missing at the food court.

“We particularly liked Manila Kitchen's menu proposal because their brand is current and modern, which we believed is a good combination with our Bang Bang brand,” explained Chen.

“Manila Kitchen also has a successful restaurant in west London which gives us confidence in their capabilities. It brings a great variety to our food hall which has been well received by our Filipino customers as well as all other nationalities,” she added.

Manila Kitchen recently launched its delivery service for the local area through the British online food ordering company Deliveroo.

San Franscisco chefs outshine New York's in Michelin 2018

NEW YORK -- New York has been usurped as America's premiere gastronomic destination, at least in terms of the Michelin Guide's celebrated three-star ranking.

The Guide's 2018 edition saw celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten suffer the indignity of being downgraded from three to two stars, leaving the US cultural and financial capital with just five three-star restaurants.

And San Francisco? It has seven.

Seventy-two New York restaurants were awarded stars by the celebrated culinary guide, down from 77 in 2016. Michelin said several previously ranked restaurants had been dropped from the list because they had since closed.

But most notable was the loss of three-star status for Vongerichten's flagship Jean-Georges, one of the most glittering restaurants in New York and situated in the Trump International Hotel and Tower overlooking Central Park.

It was at Jean-Georges that then president-elect Donald Trump dined on November 30, 2016 with Republican grandee Mitt Romney, whom he was then considering but quickly afterward passed over as a possible US secretary of state.

After eating in full glare of other diners, Trump let Romney walk out alone after the meal to heap praise on the incoming president before the cameras, offering remarks that contrasted sharply with his criticism on the campaign trail.

Jean-Georges, which opened in 1997 to critical acclaim and has long been the jewel in the French-born chef's empire, is now one of 11 New York restaurants with two stars.

Instead of the three-star ranking, which Michelin characterizes as "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey," its downgraded status is classified as "excellent cooking, worth a detour."

The restaurant's prix fixe dinner starts at $148 a head.

San Francisco now has the most number of three Michelin-starred restaurants in any US city. Chicago has two three-starred restaurants. Washington has none.

New York is home to 56 one-starred restaurants. Six new restaurants joined the star selections, three of which feature Japanese cuisine, the guide said.

While dwarfed by the population of New York, San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the country, hugely popular with tourists, famed for its Golden Gate Bridge and which in the 1990s became the hub of the dot-com bubble.

Villar: Keep calm, no 'unli-rice' ban

MANILA - Senator Cynthia Villar on Thursday clarified that she was not planning to file a bill to ban unlimited rice servings or "unli-rice" in restaurants.

"I am not planning to make a law banning 'unli rice', not at all. I just voiced out my concern that eating too much rice is one of the main causes of high blood sugar that leads to diabetes," Villar said in a statement Thursday.

"But, of course, I cannot prevent people from eating unlimited amount of rice. It is their choice. It was just a genuine expression of concern on my part."

The senator reiterated her explanation on social media, saying "Keep calm, there's no ban on unli rice."

Villar, chair of the Senate committee on agriculture and food, on Wednesday called on food establishments to refrain from offering unli rice to encourage people to eat more vegetables instead.

"You know, the findings in other countries, mas better ang diet nila. Hindi masyadong maraming rice, may vegetable. If you really ask doctors, that’s a better diet," Villar said after a hearing on rice importation and related issues.

"So dapat i-train na rin nating mga Filipinos not to eat too much rice kasi nagiging diabetic. And you know, it’s expensive to cure diabetes. Parang sinasabi sa ibang bansa kaya hindi sila nagiging self-sufficient, because they have a better diet. So makakatulong iyon, iyong sinasabi nilang unlimited rice, hindi maganda iyon sa diet natin," she added.

In her statement, Villar noted that other countries promote a balanced diet consisting of a small rice portion and a generous amount of vegetables.

"In schools in Japan, the students even discuss the nutritional value of their meals for the day before they eat. They also harvest the vegetables they eat from the garden in their school. Of course, we want our children and children’s children to grow up healthy," said Villar.

Citing a study, she said eating a plate of white rice everyday increases the risk of developing diabetes by 11 percent.

"Rice cause an increase in the level of sugar in the blood, which makes pancreas produce more insulin and cause frequent spikes in blood sugar level leading to diabetes. When not managed, diabetes may cause organ malfunction leading to death," she said.

6 restaurants in Tagaytay for your balikbayan guests

MANILA – It’s that time of the year again when relatives fly home to celebrate the holidays with their loved ones here in the Philippines.

And it’s no surprise that Tagaytay, which is only a short drive from Metro Manila, is always part of every balikbayan’s must-visit list.

To those who are looking for a nice restaurant for their balikbayan guests, we’ve got you covered. ABS-CBN News and selected media recently went on a food tour of Tagaytay’s new and tried and tested dining spots as recommended by the restaurant app Zomato.

Here are the six restaurants we visited:

Amacena

Filipino food gets a contemporary twist at Amacena helmed by Chef Luigi Muhlach, son of celebrities Aga Muhlach and Janice de Belen. The dishes served here are equally delicious as they are Instagram-worthy, with a dash of comfort. Make sure to order the Sizzling Bulalo Steak, Tuna Kilawin and Kaldereta Pot Pie.

Amacena is located at One Tagaytay Place Hotel, 445 Tagaytay-Calamba Road, Sungay West

Taaleña

If you’re looking for some Tagaytay dishes without frills, head to Taaleña, a restaurant that has been around for years. Have some Crispy Tawilis and Bulalong Batangas, among others, while enjoying a nice view of Taal Lake.

Taaleña is located at Casa Taal, Kilometer 54, Silang Crossing West, Aguinaldo Highway.

1st Colonial

No need to go all the way to Albay to get a taste of the famed Sili Ice Cream as 1st Colonial also has a branch in Tagaytay City. The Sili Ice Cream comes in four spice levels, depending on tolerance. Make sure to try the other unique flavors – pili, salabat, pipino and tinutong na bigas, to name a few – as well.

1st Colonial is located at the ground floor of Magallanes Square at Aguinaldo Highway.

Balay Dako

The hype surrounding the newest restaurant of Antonio’s Group is real. Balay Dako, which means “big house,” is a gorgeous modern colonial structure that serves top-notch local fare – including those with Spanish and Chinese influences – against a backdrop of Taal Lake. The restaurant is particularly busy on weekends for its breakfast buffet, which is probably the best available in Tagaytay today.

Balay Dako is located at Aguinaldo Highway.

Lime & Basil

Craving for some Thai food? Lime & Basil is considered by many as a gem amid Tagaytay’s many Filipino eateries, with the restaurant serving farm-to-table Thai cuisine at affordable prices. A tent can be set up at the garden, perfect for romantic dinners and family get-togethers.

Lime & Basil is located at J. Rizal Street, Barangay Sicat, Alfonso.

Bowstring

Who said you can’t have bulalo during a nightcap? Pair your cocktails and beers with this Tagaytay staple at Bowstring, which is just near the rotunda. Go to the rooftop to enjoy the cool breeze and a nice view, and order a side of Sriracha honey butter-glazed chicken wings while you’re at it.

Bowstring is located at Grandview Complex, Tagaytay-Calamba Road.

Slogans, placards and food: South Korean protests a boon for restaurants

SEOUL - As protesters march through Gwanghwamun Square in downtown Seoul, the center stage of huge weekly demonstrations calling for South Korean President Park Geun-hye to step down, nearby restaurants hustle to prepare for a busy night.

Many bars and restaurants in the area, home to government offices and near the presidential Blue House, have been doing roaring business well into the night when the protests are held every Saturday. The boom is a relief for neighborhood restaurants after a new anti-graft law in September limited the value of meals that could be accepted by civil servants.

Saturday's protest calling for Park to resign over an influence-peddling scandal was the largest yet, with organizers putting the total number of participants at 1.7 million, while police say the crowd at its peak totaled 320,000.

The demonstrations taking place for six straight weekends have been festive and peaceful, with parents bringing children and protesters putting flower stickers on police-bus barricades. It's a contrast to violent anti-government protests South Korea has seen in the past, when activists hurled rocks at police lines and were sprayed with pepper gas.

"We've prepared three to four times more than usual and set up seven more tables outside," said Cho Joung-suk, owner of Gwanghwamun Yeontanjib, a restaurant specializing in grilled eel. Nearby, protesters chanted "Park Geun-hye step down now!" and "We are the owners of the country!"

Activists marched to within 100 meters (yards) of the Blue House, one holding up a red sign reading "Arrest Park Geun-hye".

Cho, who usually shuts the restaurant on weekends and closes by midnight on weekdays, said that last week she had customers until around 4 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Kim Min-sung, a student who sat for South Korea's high-stakes university entrance test two weeks ago, was at his third protest.

"I had been studying for the past couple of months but I felt that I had to come out and protest after the exam as the situation had become serious," he said, taking a break at a restaurant specializing in South Korea's famous chicken and beer, or "chimaek", combination.

LED CANDLES, SELFIE STICKS
The anti-Park demonstrations have featured rappers and musical actors taking the stage in Gwanghwamun Square, while protesters carrying LED candles cheer with synchronized waves. In small alleyways, vendors were selling street food, selfie-sticks and the candles.

While many business owners are profiting from the protests, the political crisis helped push consumer sentiment to a nearly 7-1/2 year-low in November. Some merchants say the demonstrations have been disruptive to their business.

Park, whose approval rating stands at just 4 percent, according to a poll released on Friday, has refused calls to step down immediately. Last week, she asked parliament to find a way and a timeline for her to leave office, but the opposition plans to bring an impeachment motion to a vote on Dec. 9.

Park is accused of colluding with her long-time friend Choi Soon-sil to enable her to meddle in government affairs.

Seo Young-pyo, a resident of Jeju Island, 450 km (280 miles) south of Seoul, came to Saturday's protest with his 18-year-old daughter.

"It's not that there is less passion outside of Seoul or on Jeju Island. But Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul is the center of Korean society and there is a lot to see and learn," he said.

As Saturday night wore on, protesters took breaks for hearty meals and talked politics over drinks. Many joined long queues to use public toilets.

Kim Song-ryul, owner of Geosung Hof, a chimaek restaurant, said the carnival-like mood was a key driver of stepped-up business.

"There are families with young children in strollers who come to the protests and drop by our restaurant. The festive atmosphere really is a change from the past where there was violence," he said.

The recent rise in weekend sales has been a boost for many business owners in Gwanghwamun whose core trade of serving office workers was squeezed by the anti-graft law that limits the value of a meal that can be accepted by a civil servant to 30,000 won ($25.72).

Still, Kim, owner of the chicken and beer restaurant, has mixed feelings about the unexpected bonanza.

"If our sales rose due to good business every day, I would feel better. But to be honest, I don't feel that great about the entire situation," he said.
