Meet the other Pinay in Miss Supranational
MANILA - Miss United Kingdom 2014 Zandra Flores, a pure Filipina based in Manchester, England, begins her quest to win another international crown for the UK and the Philippines.
Flores will compete in the Miss Supranational pageant on December 5 in Krakow, Poland where an estimated 80 international beauty delegates will vie for the crown.
At her send-off held Tuesday in Pasig, the 25-year old Flores admitted feeling "double pressure" in representing the UK and her home country. She also wished good luck to Yvethe Marie Santiago, the Philippines' official delegate to Miss Supranational.
"Humanda ka 'day!" quipped Flores, who was also a finalist in the 2013 editions of the Binibining Pilipinas, Miss Philippines-Earth and Mutya ng Pilipinas pageants. "I believe I have the advantage because I represent two cultures, and I have the best of both worlds."
Flores is the first Pinay to represent the United Kingdom in an international pageant. She is also proud of the fact that she was trained by beauty queen maker Rodgil Flores.
Rodgil Flores mentored Miss International 2013 Bea Santiago, Miss Tourism Queen International 2013 Rizzini Alexis Gomez, Miss Earth 2008 Karla Henry and Miss International 2005 Lara Quigaman.
Flores parents, who are both nurses, migrated to England in the year 2000. A nurse by profession, Flores is currently taking her masters program in biomedical sciences with stem cell research.

Mutya Datul: Reigning supreme
From simple probinsyana...
Mutya has a very classic take on the Filipina: conservative, simple, family-oriented. Her weekdays were spent shuttling between home and school in her hometown of Sta. Maria, Isabela. Weekends were reserved for relaxing at home, playing in the fields, or spending time with her friends.
The third of six siblings, she has high regard for her family and looks out for their well-being. She took on several modeling stints which enabled her to augment her family’s meager income.
This 20-year old is no stranger to beauty pageants. In fact, Mutya has joined quite a number of them even before winning her current title as Miss Supranational 2013.
However, not all of them resulted in a win.
“It was always my ambition to become a beauty queen, to become an inspiration to others. The first time I set foot in the pageant, I was nervous because I felt that the others were better than I was. I was shy and would hesitate to express myself. Since I grew up in the province, I spoke a different dialect which had an effect on my communication skills.”
It may not have been easy, but Mutya stayed focused on her goal. With renewed determination, she kept trying and fighting. Instead of giving up on her dream, she went hard at work, rigorously training to be the best she could be. She honed her communication skills and became more confident about herself.
“I always strive to maintain a positive outlook in life. I believe I can succeed and I don’t give up on anything. Though I experienced losses, I did not let those setbacks stop me from reaching for my dream. With determination and persistence, I worked hard to achieve my goals.”
To world-class role model
Being a beauty queen is no walk in the park.
“Yes, it is fun,” she admits, “but there is also a lot of hard work and sacrifice involved. In a way, it is like a normal job. It comes with its own set of problems and responsibilities. For instance, I always have to keep in mind that others look up to me. I have to be very conscious of my words and actions, mindful that I have to set a good example for them.”
A beyond beautiful Filipina, she believes, is beautiful inside and out. “Inner beauty is what matters most. However, it does not mean that you should not take care of how you dress and look. I also have to work at maintaining myself. Being presentable boosts your self-esteem.”
Having always taken care of how she looks, especially her long, shiny hair, Mutya’s beauty has definitely taken her to places she had only dreamed of. “Winning the crown gave me a lot
of opportunities. It allowed me to meet many interesting people. I am able to represent our country. I am also able to engage in charity work and other worthwhile causes.”
The crown and sash is not the be-all and end-all for this lady. She sees it as one of her major stepping stones towards higher dreams. “Filipinas are not afraid to tackle life’s challenges. After my reign, maybe I’ll try my hand at show business.”
Things can only get better for Mutya, and she will definitely dazzle everyone as she continues to rise above the rest.
The first Asian and Filipina to bag the Miss Supranational title, Mutya believes that there are no limits to what one can achieve.
“Life is wonderful if you know how to live it. Believe in yourself and don’t let others pull you down. Kung ako na simpleng probinsyana, nakayanan ko itong gawin, kaya rin ito ng iba.”

Miss Supranational to use prize money for ill mom
MANILA – Filipina beauty Mutya Johanna Datul is back in the country after winning the 2013 Miss Supranational pageant over the weekend.
The 21-year-old stunner from Isabela said she is overwhelmed by her victory after joining a string of local pageants to help out in her family's finances.
“Honestly, parang nananginip pa rin ako. Nung tinawag ako, sobrang gulat na gulat ako. Kahit nung pagkagising ko, natakot akong tignan 'yung damit ko na baka pantulog siya. Kasi nakatulog ako na naka-make up and iyon pa rin ang damit ko. And then sabi ko, ‘Oh my God totoo pala.’ Ngayon unti-unti nang nagsi-sink in sa isip ko na ako yung nanalo,” she told ABS-CBN News’ Mario Dumaual.
Datul bested 82 other candidates from around the globe and also won Miss Personality in the beauty contest.
Asked about her win, she said: “I think hindi sa walk or sa smile. Sa isang candidate, kapag lumalaban ka, ang kalaban mo diyan, 'yung sarili mo, 'yung nasa isip mo.”
She added: “Lagi kong iniisip na kahit anong mangyari, kahit magaganda ang mga kalaban ko, kahit mas matangkad sila sa akin, lagi kong iniisip na sa akin 'yung crown. Positive thinking ang naging edge ko kahit sobrang stressed.”
Datul’s victory comes with a cash prize of $25,000, which she intends use for the medical expenses of her mother who has a blood disorder, as well as to help her father send her siblings to school.
“I’m the breadwinner of the family. 'Yung father ko may work as a policeman pero hindi enough. Ako 'yung nag-volunteer na tulungan ang father ko kasi mahirap talaga na isa lang ang kumakayod sa family,” she said.
“Si mother ko, mabuti naman ang kalagayan niya pero lifetime na ang medication niya. She has a problem sa blood pero sobra niyang strong and alam ko na hindi siya ganun naaapektuhan sa karamdaman niya. Ako daw ang inspiration niya pero siya din ang inspiration ko,” she added.
While she is delighted to bring home some cash, Datul said what she really wanted was to bring home the crown for the Philippines.
“Yung importante sa akin, 'yung crown talaga. Kahit wala na akong matanggap [na ibang premyo], 'yung crown lang talaga para makapagbigay ako ng karangalan sa Pilipinas at makapagbigay ako ng saya sa pamilya ko,” she said.
Datul said she could never thank the Binibining Pilipinas Inc. enough for opening her doors to such opportunities, citing those who helped her prior to the competition as her inspiration to do her best in the pageant.
“Minold nila ako. Sobrang thankful ako kasi sobrang supportive nila, from the clothes, talagang everything. Doon ko nakita na kailangan kong magpursige kasi pinakita nila sa akin na kahit wala na silang tulog and pahinga, para lang maayos ang mga gamit ko,” she said.
