'Superpope' Francis T-shirts to help poor, needy

A work of street art that turned Pope Francis into "superpope" will now support Vatican charitable projects through the sale of t-shirts bearing the flying pontiff, artist MauPal said Friday.

In 2014, graffiti artist MauPal -- whose real name is Mauro Pallotta -- depicted Francis as a superman on a wall in the Eternal City, flying through the air with his right fist outstretched and white cassock billowing behind him.

The pope clutched his trademark black bag in his left hand, from which a blue-and-red striped scarf peeked out.

When it appeared in Rome in January 2014, it captured the imagination of tourists and locals alike.

Two years later, MauPal drew Francis in a school-boy spirit, playing a cheeky wall game of noughts and crosses while a Swiss Guard kept watch.

"With the economic and social crisis that hit Italy and the world, I saw Francis as a symbol of hope for all," the artist said.

"I graphically summed up a widely-shared opinion of the pope as someone with a lot of power who is also humane and humble at the same time".

The images, put up near Saint Peter's Basilica, were quickly scrubbed off by city workers.

But the sketches remained and reappear on T-shirts. Part of the proceeds from their sale go towards works of charity supported by the Vatican.

Not everyone loved the drawings at first, with some earnest Francis supporters bristling at the tongue-in-cheek portrayal of a superman pope.

But it seems Francis himself has given MauPal's works his blessing.

"I offered him the drawing I had painted on a simple piece of wood, a medium I thought fit his (anti-luxury) philosophy. He looked at me, he smiled at me, then he affectionately pinched my cheek," MauPal said.

Jeepney takes spotlight in NBA's Filipino Heritage shirts

MANILA, Philippines – The National Basketball Association (NBA) last week unveiled specially designed shirts for the first-ever NBA Filipino Heritage Week as part of its celebration of Philippine culture.

The shirts feature the iconic jeepney silhouette, which pays homage to the Philippines' culture and passion for basketball. The silhouette incorporates other basketball and local design elements, including the sun's rays from the Philippine flag placed above the "Pilipinas" signage.

It also features an image of the Larry O'Brien trophy, which forms the jeep's headlights on the front grill.

As part of the NBA Filipino Heritage Week, the Golden State Warriors and the Miami Heat will host Filipino Heritage Nights in March, featuring in-arena Philippine-themed activities including musical performances and giveaways.

The Heat will host a post-game press conference with head coach Erik Spoelstra for the Philippine media, while the Warriors will headline award-winning Filipino singer Martin Nievera and Likha Pilipino Folk Ensemble during the Filipino Heritage Night national anthem and halftime performance respectively.

In addition, the Miami Heat players, dance team, and mascot will showcase the limited edition shirts during pre-game warm-ups and on-court performances.

The Filipino Heritage Week shirts will come in red, blue, gray, black, and white colors that will be available March 16 at all NBA Stores in Metro Manila and Cebu, Titan stores in the Fort, Conrad, and Titan webstore (www.titan22.com).

In addition, the American Airlines Arena and the Oracle Arena team stores, and NBAStore.com will carry the NBA Filipino Heritage Week shirts.

'Nasty Woman' rules US election T-shirts

T-shirts inspired by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's "such a nasty woman" comment on Democrat Hillary Clinton in last week's debate were flying off internet retailers' shelves, offering a possible hint on the Nov. 8 election result.

Speaking on Monday (October 24) at Gowanus Print Lab in Brooklyn, New York, Bob Bland, CEO and founder of Manufacture NY and nastywoman.co, said that demand came swiftly.

"Pretty much all women in the country (went), 'I could not believe when he said that.' And so immediately I started thinking to myself, 'Oh shoot, if she's a nasty woman, so am I.' So is like basically everyone I know who I respect and think is cool. So I guess we're all nasty women, right?" she said.

Bland created nastywoman.co the morning after Trump's comments and within 48 hours, nearly 1,500 orders of T-shirts and totes with the words "Nasty Women Vote" were placed and she's already been able to give $20,000 (USD) to reproductive healthcare provider Planned Parenthood. Everything except for the actual cost of making and shipping the T-shirts goes to charity, she said.

Merchandise retailers typically see a profit boost during election season as voters on both sides seek to wear support for their candidates, particularly around conventions, voting and this year, debates.

"A lot of the people that are involved with us, the main reason why they bought a shirt is because they're thinking, 'It would be so fun to wear a nasty woman T-shirt on Election Day.' And if it helps people to have a reason to go and vote on Election Day, that's even more exciting to me because, you know, a lot of us have felt not really excited about the election this time, especially those of us who were really rooting for Senator Sanders. And so for us to be able to find another reason to coalesce, to come together and step out and vote on November 8th is really exciting," Bland said.

After the third and final presidential debate on Wednesday (October 19), Trump's "nasty woman" comment gave life to a new merchandise line aimed at assailing him.

Pop star Katy Perry wore another "Nasty Woman" creation, designed by Amanda Brinkman and offered online at Google Ghost. Brinkman's "Nasty Woman" T-shirt, featuring the phrase with a heart around it, was sold more than 6,000 times since she designed and posted it during Wednesday's debate.

Brinkman is donating half of the proceeds to Planned Parenthood, which Trump opposes because it offers abortions.
