Actor Richard Gutierrez comes out to support his MMA team at PXC 31

It’s no secret that actor Richard Gutierrez is a big fan of mixed martial arts.

He’s been training in martial arts since he was a kid, starting first with karate and later boxing, Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu. He once trained under UFC fighter Brandon Vera in preparation for a role in a TV series, and also attended an MMA workshop held by Mark Munoz earlier this year.

Gutierrez now regularly trains with the team over at Submission Sports Philippines in Ortigas. The camp is headed by Erwin Tagle, who is set to make his Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC) debut in a blockbuster title fight with flyweight champion Ale Cali in September, and current URCC middleweight champion Froilan Sarenas.

At PXC 31, held Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena, Gutierrez came out to support his Submission Sports Muay Thai trainer, Eugene Toquero, who defeated Victor Torre via technical knockout in a flyweight clash.

“It was well-executed,” Gutierrez said of his trainer’s impressive performance in the cage. “I requested for knees and elbows and he did exactly that so we’re very happy.”

Toquero brought about the end of the fight with a devastating elbow from the mount that opened a huge gash on Torre’s forehead. The ringside doctor was called into the cage, and he called it 4:16 into the first round.

“That’s his signature move, his elbow, so I was happy he was able to land it.”

But despite his dedication to the sport, don’t expect to see him climbing into the cage anytime soon.

“I don’t think so,” he answered when asked about his plans of making an MMA debut of his own.
