UE nails first win on Sumang's heroics

MANILA, Philippines – Roi Sumang completed a brilliant four-point play to help the University of the East turn back the fancied National University, 71-67, on Saturday’s 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

With the scored tied at 67-all, Sumang nailed a three-pointer to break the deadlock. In the process, he was able to fish a foul off Bobby Ray Parks Jr. to close the game with a rare four-point play.

His heroics led the Red Warriors to their first UAAP win since their 2013 Filoil Flying-V Pre-Season title victory.

The loss was a heart-breaker for the Bulldogs, the defending champions in that pre-season tournament.

NU was leading by one, 63-62, when Sumang struck with his first basket to make it 64-63 for UE over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

After another Sumang basket, Parks and Emmanuel Mbe tied the game 67-all, with over a minute remaining.

However, Sumang pulled off the unexpected, clocking in a triple while drawing a foul from Parks. He iced the game at the stripe, for the Warriors’ first win in two games.

He finished the game with 22 points, while Parks had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds for NU.
