Ateneo, La Salle team up in battle against COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines -- After figuring in numerous wars in the UAAP, archrivals Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University are teaming up to fight a common enemy in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Society of Jesus and the De La Salle Brothers have joined forces to raise funds for the vulnerable communities affected by the enhanced community quarantine in a campaign called "Let's Work Together To Fight COVID-19."

Even before this collaborative effort, Ateneo and La Salle have done their part in helping the country during the crisis.

La Salle, together with the Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center, opened the doors of the Razon Sports Complex and the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde's covered courts to the homeless of Manila, providing them with shelter and food.

Ateneo, meanwhile, opened its dormitories to medical frontliners.

"I appreciated the shelters, so the first thing that crossed my mind was to help," said Philippine Jesuit Provincial Fr. Jun Viray, SJ. "The Ateneo alumni, those in business, said they'd like to help."

"I told them, 'Let's raise money together with our friends -- which means also La Salle friends'," he added.

"A little conversation between myself and Father Jun created a spark that is more explosive than UAAP that allowed us to say, maybe this is the time to work together rather than compete," said DLSU president Bro. Armin Luistro, FSC.

As of April 15, their initiative has raised P10,000,000 that will feed almost 500 homeless individuals and 6,000 urban poor families.

To join the cause, one can send their donations to the following accounts:

La Salle Green Archers, CSB Blazers lend facilities to the homeless

MANILA, Philippines -- De La Salle University's Enrique Razon Sports Complex is best known as the training facility for their sports teams, and has hosted many UAAP events.

The covered courts of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (CSB), meanwhile, is the stomping grounds of the Blazers.

In the face of the crisis, however, both venues have been transformed into shelters for the homeless amidst the enhanced community quarantine that is currently in place in Metro Manila.

Both schools are working with the Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center in providing a haven for the less fortunate.

"The AJ Kalinga Center is serving the homeless regularly. Their main ministry is providing food and free showers for the homeless," said La Salle's vice president for Lasallian mission Fritzie De Vera.

"But now that we are under quarantine, they are looking for shelters for them. They worked with several schools to give them a safe space during the community quarantine."

As of Monday, there are 79 guests staying at Razon, and 80 in the CSB covered courts. Nearby St. Scholastica College in Manila also houses a number of guests.

There are volunteers from AJ Kalinga Center handling the guests on all sites.

To provide for the daily needs of the guests and the volunteers, the school is asking for donations either in kind or in cash.

"We are requesting for donations in kind or in cash. For donations in kind, we would appreciate cooked meals for them. The center is also providing meals which they get from the cash donations. We provide three meals a day," De Vera said.

Many have responded including a couple of donors who provided mattresses and protective gear, Chooks-to-Go who provided 50 packs of chicken for them, and La Salle's student government who provided vitamins which will last for 14 days.

In urgent need for the guests are pillows; two industrial rice cookers; two percolators for coffee; packs of garbage bags; medicines for first aid; small bath towels; clothes for men, women, and children; toiletries; and alcohol.

La Salle lights up blue after UAAP loss to Ateneo

After suffering a loss to their arch rival Ateneo de Manila University, the De La Salle University community showed graciousness in defeat last night, as it lit the facade of the university’s iconic St. La Salle Hall blue.

The Green Archers suffered a heartbreaking loss in the men’s basketball tournament to their rivals, who snatched from them what would have been their second successive title.

In a remarkably well-fought game that featured seven deadlocks and seven lead changes, the Blue Eagles fended off the Green Archers, 88-86, in the do-or-die Game 3 of the best-of-three finals to dethrone their rivals and annex the UAAP crown.

It was Ateneo’s first UAAP title since Season 75, when they won the last of five consecutive championships.

The act of sportsmanship was seen in a photo shared on Facebook by The LaSallian, the university’s paper.

MVP to give every member of Ateneo champion squad an iPhone X

MANILA, Philippines -- Winning a title, at any sport must be a pretty fulfilling experience.

In the case of the UAAP season 80 men's basketball champions Ateneo Blue Eagles, their title win helped them avenge last year's loss at the hands of their bitter rival De La Salle University.

Aside from the emotional pain the season 79 loss Ateneo had to endure, months and months of hard work also came into play, in their search for improvement.

But all of those happened in the past. The Blue Eagles are now champions, and their main backer, Pinoy mogul Manny V. Pangilinan wasted to time in making his wards remember that hard work truly does pay:

The Blue Eagles are set to receive Apple's newest handset as a customary bonus to collegiate sports teams who win championships.

Surely, this just made Ateneo's championship victory all the more sweeter.

UST, FEU continue to roll in UAAP beach volley

MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion University of Santo Tomas and top challenger Far Eastern University continued their unbeaten run in the UAAP Season 80 women's beach volleyball tournament on Saturday evening at the Sands SM By the Bay.

The UST pair of Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray overwhelmed University of the Philippines' Diana Carlos and Ayel EstraƱero, 21-7, 21-15, and Adamson's Bern Flora and Chrislyn Uy, 21-9, 21-14, to give the Tigresses a 5-0 record.

The Lady Tamaraws also improved to 5-0, as Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza rolled past Adamson, 21-12, 21-14, and University of the East's Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat, 21-10, 21-7.

Both FEU and UST are now assured of spots in the women's beach volleyball Final 4.

Meanwhile, the De La Salle Lady Spikers and the UP Lady Maroons also inched closer to a semis spot after ending Day 3 with identical 3-2 win-loss records.

La Salle's Tin Tiamzon and May Luna turned back UE, 21-17, 21-16, and needed three sets to overcome National University's Roma Doromal and Audrey Paran, 17-21, 21-19, 20-18.

EstraƱero and Carlos rebounded from an earlier loss to UST to beat Ateneo's Bea de Leon and Jules Samonte, 21-17, 21-11, allowing UP to move closer to its first semis appearance since the pair of Aia del Mundo and Pau Genido made it to the post-season in 2012.

In the men's division, the Bulldogs' Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad upended the Falcons' Paolo Pablico and JP Yulde, 21-13, 21-18, to stay perfect in four contests.

The Growling Tigers' KR Guzman and Anthony Arbasto prevailed over the Blue Eagles' Marck Espejo and Karl Baysa, 21-14, 21-13, while the Tamaraws' Jude Garcia and Richard Solis topped the Green Spikers' Carlo Sendo and Wayne Marco, 21-12, 21-16, to raise their records at 3-1.

Meet Ateneo's rising star Tyler Tio

MANILA, Philippines – Forced to wait a season and a game before making his UAAP debut, Ateneo de Manila University guard Tyler Tio showed exactly why he was such a highly recruited prospect out of Xavier School.

In his very first game for the Blue Eagles, Tio converted all six of his shots, including two booming three-pointers in the fourth quarter that allowed Ateneo to pull away completely from University of the Philippines (UP) on Wednesday afternoon.

He finished with 14 points and two assists in Ateneo's 92-71 win in the Battle of Katipunan, after missing their Season 80 opener against Adamson University last Saturday due to an ankle sprain.

"It was a lot of fun for me," the 19-year-old rookie said afterward. "Thankfully, okay ang performance ko."

This performance was a long time coming for Tio. He was technically a part of the 2016 recruiting class, but had to sit out UAAP Season 79 due to citizenship issues: Tio only formally became a Filipino citizen earlier this year.

He was solid in Ateneo's preseason tournaments, but then sat out their first game due to injury. Tio could have been forgiven had he played with a touch of 'gigil' against the Fighting Maroons, but instead, the young guard was in control throughout his 11-minute stint.

"Of course, I was very excited to play," said Tio. "But I wasn't thinking coming into the game that I had to score this amount of points."

"I just wanted to make sure that I played correctly, and followed Coach Tab (Baldwin's) system," he added. "Thankfully, okay naman ang nangyari."

He did not play like it, but Tio admits he did feel some jitters. "I just tried my best to fight it," he said.

Mostly, Tio is simply thankful to have finally gotten the first game out of the way.

"It's been a long wait, that's for sure," says Tio. "I just used the time to get better and prepare."

Nevertheless, Tio wouldn't promise that his future performances will be as explosive as his debut. After all, he is still only in his first season, and is still working his way back from injury.

"I don't wanna say anything," he said. "I just want to try my best, and God will take care of the rest."

MANILA, Philippines –  Ateneo forward John Apacible has been suspended for the rest of the UAAP Season 78 second round following his involvement in a drunk driving incident early Sunday morning that has since gone viral around social media.

Ateneo team manager Epok Quimpo confirmed that Apacible will not play in the Blue Eagles' remaining games in the second round of the tournament.

A video posted by Top Gear Philippines on Sunday evening showed a visibly drunk Apacible bragging about a "councilor" vanity plate while cursing and shouting along Timog Avenue in Quezon City.

Ateneo's University Athletics Office on Monday evening called Apacible's behavior "reprehensible" and "unacceptable," and said both the team and the school will deal with the incident.

Quimpo, in a message to Ateneo's The Guidon on Monday evening, also said that Apacible will not be allowed to practice with the team as he is set to face "disciplinary actions."

According to Quimpo, Apacible has apologized to the whole Ateneo team, including the coaching staff and management, and the rest of the Blue Eagles "will be supporting him through this trying time."

The incident drew the ire of many on social media, with netizens believing that Apacible should face greater punishment for his actions.

Ateneo player linked to drunk driving incident

MANILA, Philippines -- The Ateneo de Manila University on Monday vowed to take action after a member of the Blue Eagles was linked to a drunk driving incident that occurred early Sunday morning.

Reserve forward John Apacible was identified as the "very drunk driver" whose car bore a "councilor" vanity plate and caused a commotion along Timog Avenue in Quezon City.

A video of the incident was posted by Top Gear Philippines.

In its website, Top Gear later cited a source who claimed that the driver was a player of a UAAP basketball team.

Ateneo's University Athletics Office confirmed on Monday evening that it was indeed Apacible who was caught in the video.

"It has come to our attention that John Apacible, a member of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, behaved in an unacceptable manner during an early Sunday morning encounter," Ateneo athletics director Emmanuel Fernandez said in a memo.

"John deeply regrets his reprehensible behavior and sincerely apologizes to all parties concerned," he added.

Fernandez said that the Blue Eagles' team management as well as the Loyola Schools "will deal with this regrettable incident appropriately and swiftly."

Apacible is averaging 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds in seven minutes of playing time per game for Ateneo in Season 78.

Why Rachel Anne Daquis reigns as volleyball's hottest player

During her UAAP years, Rachel Anne Daquis was dubbed by volleyball fans as the "Queen Tamaraw," as she helped the Far Easter University Lady Tamaraws bag the 2008 UAAP women's championship over the Adamson Lady Falcons.

But the 27-year-old Daquis was able to maintain her popularity -- and intensity -- as one of the country's top volleyball players even after she graduated from college, having won V-League Season 7 Best Server and V-League Season 8 Finals MVP.

At a statuesque 5-foot-10, she also became a household name for her off-court activities, like modeling for magazines. She appeared on the cover of FHM's October 2014 issue and just recently became the lone athlete to make it to the Top 10 of FHM's annual poll of the country's sexiest women.

Here are 15 good reasons why Daquis deserves the honor.

How NU went from underdog to UAAP powerhouse

MANILA, Philippines – National University's (NU) amazing transformation from UAAP laughingstock to powerhouse continues this season, with the former cellar-dwellers already racking up three championships in the seniors division, as well as the cheerdance crown.

In just the first semester, NU has won titles in women's basketball (a first for the school), men's beach volleyball, and men's badminton. Its girls team also triumphed in volleyball in the juniors division.

NU is thus on track to surpass their total of four seniors championships in Season 76, when they ruled men's volleyball and beach volleyball, and men's and women's tennis.

As recently as four years ago, NU did not manage to win a single championship in the seniors division, only breaking through in Season 74 when they won the baseball crown. It was the school's first seniors title since 1986.

Since that breakthrough, however, NU has started to make a habit of winning, or, at the very least, contending for championships in the UAAP – a far cry from their status as league doormats in recent years.

The Sy takeover

The improvement of NU's sports program can be traced back to 2008, when the SM Group of Companies acquired majority ownership of the university. Yet sports was not a primary focus for the Sy family when they acquired the school.

"Frankly, one of the basic reason why we got the school was my father's advocacy, that he really wants to give education to deserving students – that is also affordable," SM Prime Holdings Inc. president Hans Sy told ABS-CBNnews.com.

"Good quality education na affordable – that was the only thing in our mind when we got the school," he stressed.

At the time, however, the student body was "less than a thousand," said Sy, which led them to realize that they need to "market" NU. Aside from improving the school through new facilities and buildings, one particularly effective way to advertise NU was through sports.

"When we officially sat down to talk about how to market the school, it kind of came into our mind that the best marketing is through sports, the sports program," Sy said. "We noted how people are so passionate about sports, so we focused on the sports program."

Even NU president Teodoro Ocampo admitted that the UAAP was a great source of promotion for the school in its effort to increase enrollment.

"It goes hand-in-hand eh. 'Pag nanalo ka, you get the media exposure, and people will get to hear about your school. And then, (they say) 'Okay 'yung NU, nananalo,'" Ocampo told ABS-CBNnews.com.

With that in mind, the long-suffering NU sports program was revitalized, with Sy using the same model that they use for their businesses.

"It is simple," he said. "It's just like how we do business. We look for partners, and we empower them to see how to make the best out of it."

"I don't want to take the credit, that it's all upon myself," he added. "I really have some good friends and partners that came in to help, and they were very focused into developing all the programs that we have."

Investments pay dividends in other sports

The results were seen in other sports first. NU won the baseball title in Season 74, then the men's volleyball, beach volleyball and badminton titles in Season 75. Their women's tennis team broke through in Season 76, winning the crown.

Their juniors teams also started to show their worth, with the Bullpups winning the juniors basketball championship in Season 76, while their boys team also won the juniors chess crown.

NU has also won back-to-back titles in UAAP Cheerdance, upending the established dominance of traditional powerhouses like University of the Philippines (UP) and University of Santo Tomas in the process.

"As I said, I got very good partners," said Sy. "So there are partners who immediately get into it, and there are some partners who take a little time. (In cheerdance), they got into it."

"When I entered here five years ago, we presented a five-year development program, so I think we're on the right track," said NU athletic director Junel Baculi. "We've come a long way since the old National University."

The most popular UAAP sports event, of course, is still basketball, and in the past three years, the NU Bulldogs have shown that they were a team to be reckoned with in the tournament.

Historic campaign

Season 77 is already a historic tournament for the Bulldogs, as they made the Finals of the men's basketball tournament for the first time in 44 years – the longest Finals drought in the UAAP, even surpassing that of perennial cellar-dwellers UP.

It was quite a surprising run by the Bulldogs, who upset top-seeded Ateneo in the Final Four to set a date with Far Eastern University in the Finals. They had, after all, lost two-time Most Valuable Player Ray Parks before the season after he decided to pursue his NBA dreams.

"Last year (Season 76), we were supposed to make it to the Finals," Sy said. "Pero alam mo naman, bilog ang bola. No matter what, there is also a certain level of luck into the game."

"Si Ray is still very much a part of us. We do not just say 'they should do this, they should do that.' We give them a free choice, and Ray wanted to pursue something bigger. Quite frankly, we're still behind him, supporting him, for him to achieve his dream," he said.

Without Parks – and big man Emmanuel Mbe – the Bulldogs advanced to the Finals, where they are currently down 0-1 to the Tamaraws in a best-of-three series. Yet the team has shown impressive resolve all season when they play with their backs against the wall, and figures to come out strong in Wednesday's Game 2.

Both Sy and Ocampo gave tremendous credit to Bulldogs head coach Eric Altamirano for the rise of their men's basketball team.

"From the very first day that he started, I was watching him already, and the first thing that he imposed on the boys was really discipline. But his type of discipline is not somebody that will shout or things like that," said Sy.

"It's positive reinforcement, and at the same time, he hits you in the heart. Mako-konsensya ka eh. He makes it a point that the discipline is not imposed through fear, but through respect," he added.

"This guy is the whole package," Ocampo said of Altamirano. "He's not just a coach. He instills values in the kids. You will be proud of them (the players). Hindi sila nananakit, and nakita mo, they are disciplined. Gentlemen sila."

"It's not just all about winning – it's character-building also. He's a good man. I can't say anything negative about this person," he added.

It was not smooth sailing for Altamirano, who was rumored to be on the hot seat when NU failed to make it to the Finals last season despite having Parks and being the No. 1 seed at the end of the elimination round.

"Mr. Sy is not like that," Ocampo quickly said when asked about those rumors. "You fail, he'll say, 'Okay, let's pick up.' Sabi namin, sabi ko nga, 'No negative vibes. Don't say anything negative."

"Let's all just encourage and encourage. We'll get there also. It took the other schools, how many years? Let's not be in a hurry masyado. We'll get there. And look – we made it," he said.

School pride

NU's improved performance in the UAAP has become a great source of pride for its students and alumni, who now have risen from their years of "hibernation," said Ocampo.

"Ang mga alumi natin have been sleeping all these years, and they are all awake. They are there with their full support," he said. "They brought back pride into the school."

"You'll see them walking around with their NU shirts now, hindi na naka-tago sa baul nila siguro. They're all out, and may pride na sila," Ocampo said.

NU students and alumni matched the Ateneo crowd in the Final Four, bringing colorful banners bearing words of inspiration for the Bulldogs, and they continued to come in droves in the Finals, filling the Mall of Asia Arena to capacity along with the equally impressive FEU crowd.

"It's so exciting, what's happening," said Sy, who was at the MOA Arena early and even handed out some clappers to NU students. "It has boosted the morale and the pride of the school."

"I was amazed (by the NU crowd against Ateneo). It gave me the joy of seeing that they are now proud of their school," he added.

Seeing NU alumni take pride in their sports teams was something that Ocampo envisioned when the SM Group came in to take over the school that his grandfather, Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson, founded in 1900.

"When we partnered with them, sabi ko one way of restoring pride into the school and elevating it in popularity is through the UAAP. So many people follow it, and then look at the media mileage you get," he said.

"So sabi ko, let's work on it. Let's focus on our athletics program because students take pride in that. They graduate, they become alumni, they take pride in that, in their sports program. Look at La Salle and Ateneo, right?" he said.

Focusing on academics

NU's sports program is clearly on the right track, with Baculi even saying they exceeded their goals in the initial five-year development plan that they presented.

With this in mind, Sy is now shifting his focus onto the academic side.

"Sa akin, quite frankly, the sports program is very much there. Ang talagang focus ko ngayon is education," he said. "I want to be able to produce board top-notchers. That's the one that we're now pushing very hard."

NU regularly produces top-notchers in Sanitary Engineering Board Exams, and Ocampo said they also want to "inject the same energy that we do in sports in the academics."

"Of course, our goal is that when our students get out of school, employable sila," he said. "And then, when they're in the company, they can make a statement – whether andoon ka sa pinakamababang position, they'll know na, 'NU graduate, 'yan magaling.'"

These also include their athletes; Ocampo stresses that their athletes will have to do well in school or risk getting dropped from their teams.

"Marami kaming tinatanggal kasi they don't excel in their class," he said. "Even if we don't make the Finals dahil sa isang superstar na bumabagsak, we'll sacrifice that."

NU's enrollment has steadily increased to the point where its student population is now at 6,500. Sy's goal is to reach the same number of students that the school had in its peak years in the 1960s – around 14,000.

The school's facilities have improved tremendously as well, said Ocampo, and they will continue to do so every year.

"What we want is to have the best facilities na affordable, and academic-wise, to have the same standard as the big schools, but at a lower (price)," said Ocampo.

New target: general championship
NU's new goal now is to win the UAAP general championship within the next five years, even though their sports program is still not yet complete.

"We still don't have (a) swimming (team), we still don't have track and field, judo, and the others," Sy said. "But little by little, they're coming in."

"We aspire for that (the general championship)," said Ocampo. "But it will take time. For other schools, it also took time. But with (Mr. Sy) and his full support, I think we can do it in the next three to five years. Five years siguro. We'll go for that."

Baculi is hopeful that the sports program can deliver on that goal, even as he noted that they still have more than 10 teams to form.

"Siguro, kaya," he said of their goal of winning the general championship. "Five years ago, we promised na we will deliver at least in a few events, pero na-surpass namin 'yun. Marami na kaming nagcha-champion."

"We outdid our goals, so hopefully we can outdo our goals for the next five years," he said.

MANILA, Philippines – Season 77 UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Kiefer Ravena is reportedly planning to shift sports as he bared plans to try out for the Ateneo men’s volleyball team next year.

Ravena told Spin.ph’s Mei-Lin Lozada that he already talked to Ateneo volleyball coach Oliver Almadro about joining the try outs.

"Magta-try out ako sa volleyball next year. Nakipag-usap na rin ako kay coach O," he said.

Ravena, whose parents were both volleyball players, said he is no stranger to the sport.

His mother, Mozzy Crisologo Ravena, was part of the University of Santo Tomas team that won titles in the late 1980s to the early 1990s. His father Bong Ravena also used to play volleyball before finding a career as a PBA player.

"Naging varsity ako dati noong elementary, tapos noong nasa Ateneo na ako di na pwede [mag-volleyball], isang [sport] na lang ang pwede," said Ravena.

His rumored girlfriend, Mika Reyes, also plays volleyball for La Salle.

Ravena already had two UAAP championships as part of the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

This year, however, the Blue Eagles failed to reach the finals after succumbing to the National University Bulldogs in the Final 4.

Ex-PBA player dead in SLEX accident

MANILA –  Former UAAP and PBA player Bryan Gahol and a woman died in a multiple vehicle collision at the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) early Tuesday morning.

According to an initial investigation, a cargo jeep first hit a trailer truck, which subsequently bumped the Nissan Urvan carrying Gahol. The van lost control, causing it to overturn along the highway before it was hit by another vehicle.

Authorities said Gahol and his friends were on their way to Quezon City from Laguna to attend a wake when the accident happened.

Gasol’s other companions survived the incident.

The cargo jeep had come from San Jose, Occidental Mindoro with 11 passengers. Two of the cargo jeep’s passengers, identified as Johnny Bangsoy and Felix Gonatisie, were injured.

The driver of the cargo jeep and the trailer truck are now under the custody of the Highway Patrol Group.

The multiple vehicle collision caused heavy traffic along SLEX near Southwoods in Laguna.

The 6-foot-5 Gahol played for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the UAAP during the late 1990s. He played six seasons in the PBA, suiting up for Mobiline, Red Bull, and San Miguel Beer, among other teams. – reports from Jerome Lantin, ABS-CBN News and Dennis Datu, dzMM

Van Opstal doubtful for La Salle's PCCL opener

MANILA, Philippines – Center Arnold Van Opstal may not be able to suit up for UAAP champions De La Salle in their first game of the 2013 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) against the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras on Monday.

The Green Archers, already seeded in the Final Four of the tournament after winning the UAAP crown, will take on the Southern champions in the first game of the round-robin semi-finals.

But they may have to do so without Van Opstal, who suffered an injury in practice and is considered day-to-day.

“He got bumped or hit by (fellow La Salle big man) Norbert (Torres) in his hip, so he’s recovering from that,” said DLSU head coach Juno Sauler. “He’s day-to-day.”

Van Opstal did not participate in Saturday’s charity game, “Champions for a Cause,” against NCAA champions San Beda – much to the disappointment of Red Lions center Ola Adeogun.

“I was looking forward to my match-up with Van Opstal, but he didn’t play in the game,” said Adeogun. “So maybe next time.”

San Beda and La Salle will face off again on Thursday, December 12 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

UAAP-inspired watches launched

MANILA – The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has partnered with SWAP by Tomato Time for its latest watch collection.

Just in time for the kick-off of the UAAP’s second semester sports, SWAP released eight different watch designs bearing the school logos of the league members.

Aside from its unique design, the watch’s straps are also interchangeable giving users several alternatives on what colors they want to combine.

“SWAP is all about expressing your individuality. Partnering with UAAP which is an institution, the students and the alumni can express their individuality, school spirit and school pride as well,” Lennie Dionisio, managing director of Tomato, said.

The UAAP collection of SWAP watches are now available in selected Tomato stores and SWAP exhibits located at various malls in Metro Manila.

It is also available at the Tomato Online Store at www.tomato.ph.

This is not the first time that the UAAP and ABS-CBN Licensing, which airs the sports events on Studio 23, partnered with a brand.

Last year, the UAAP teamed up with Brazilian flip-flops brand Havaianas to come up with pairs of rubber slippers in the respective colors of the eight member-schools.

Kobe Paras picks La Salle over UP, report says

MANILA – And the good news continues to pour in for UAAP champions De La Salle Green Archers after the prized high-school player Kobe Paras has committed to play for the team when he enters college in two years, according to a report Tuesday.

In a report by Snow Badua for the sports website Spin.ph, Paras, who currently plays for La Salle Greenhills in the NCAA, was quoted as saying that he is not inclined at the moment to play for his father Benjie Paras’ alma mater, the University of the Philippines, noting that his brother, Andre, is already with the Maroons.

“Hindi na siguro, andun naman na si kuya. So okay na 'yun, La Salle na lang ako,” he told Badua.

The six-foot-five Paras, who is this year’s World 3x3 slam dunk champion, was spotted at the victory party of the Green Archers last Saturday, where he was seen with businessman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, who is considered La Salle’s top sports patron.

“I’d be loyal kasi si Boss Danding pa 'yung tumutulong sa akin, so I’d be as loyal as possible,” Paras, who is currently a high school junior, told Spin.ph. “Malamang nga dun na ako. As of now, 'yun na muna siguro masasabi ko. I’m leaning towards that (playing for La Salle).”

Paras also told the website that he is excited to play with his idol, UAAP Finals MVP Jeron Teng.

Mixed emotions for Alvin Teng after Jeron's joy, Jeric's heartbreak

MANILA, Philippines -- Alvin Teng is dealing with mixed emotions after watching his sons give their 100% in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 76 Finals, won by the De La Salle Green Archers, 71-69, in overtime Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Alvin has stayed neutral while watching his sons Jeron and Jeric play for La Salle and the University of Santo Tomas (UST), respectively, and admittedly feels torn now that one son has succeeded while the other failed.

Jeron scored 25 points and won Finals Most Valuable Player, while Jeric scored 24 points but came agonizingly short of winning all the marbles in what was his final game in a UST uniform.

"Masayang masaya (ako) at malungkot, dahil unang-una, si Jeric, nakaka-awa din dahil gusto niyang mag-champion, tapos natalo. Ganyan talaga ang buhay 'di ba, hindi naman pwede na dalawa ang mag-champion," said Alvin after the game.

He added that the three-game series was tough for the family, especially his wife, Susan.

"Ang hirap, dahil parang hindi ka masyadong makapag-cheer sa mga anak mo, dahil dalawang anak mo naglalaro, tapos both teams halos kaibigan ko. Ang hirap," he said.

"Ang nangyari, naging neutral muna kami. Kahit sinong manalo, ayun, good luck sa kanila," he added. "At least buti na lang natapos na rin. Kasi ang nangyari nga, ang sabi baka ma-postpone dahil bumagyo. Eh 'yung misis ko nga, nagkakasakit na dahil stressed na stressed."

"Ganoon din ako, nagi-isip din ako, 'Sino ba talaga ang magcha-champion?' Hindi ko rin alam dahil parehong anak ko gustong mag-champion."

But Alvin, known as "Robocop" during his PBA days, also feels immense pride after seeing both sons give it their all in a game that was watched by a record crowd of 23, 396.

"Masayang masaya ako dahil 'yung laro ng magkapatid, binigay nila 'yung 100% nila," he said.

"Sayang dahil last year na ni Jeric, sana nakatikim siya ng championship. Pero nangyari na eh, so bawi na lang siguro sa susunod," he added. "Pareho sila na gusto mag-champion eh. Kung pwede nga, bibilhan ko na lang sila ng sarili nilang medal."

On social media, both Jeric and Jeron praised each other for a battle well fought.

"Congrats to DLSU. They played really well. And congrats to Jeron for getting the Finals MVP. You deserve it," tweeted Jeric, adding the hashtag "#proudbrother."

Meanwhile, Jeron tweeted: "Props also to my brother Jeric for playing whole-heartedly for UST! For me he's more deserving to be the Finals MVP!"

La Salle closes out series, nabs UAAP crown

MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University (DLSU) took its first UAAP crown since 2007 by beating University of Sto. Tomas, 71-69, in Game 3 of the men's basketball finals.

After trailing the Tigers in the first two quarters, the Archers mounted a comeback in the second half to clinch the game.

Jeron Teng, Arnold Van Opstal and Arnold Vosotros led the way for La Salle.

The last time La Salle won the title was when it swept University of the East in the 2007 finals.

The Archers' victory also foiled the Tigers' attempt to become the first fourth-seeded team to win the UAAP men's title.
