Football: Lady Eagles prospect passes away because of COVID-19

Alyana Bautista, a teenage football prospect who was set to play for Ateneo de Manila University, has died because of COVID-19, her family confirmed Thursday on social media.

Bautista was 17.

She was diagnosed with Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) a disease affecting the central nervous system, according to her sister, national team member and former ABS-CBN courtside reporter Martie Bautista.

The ADEM was further complicated by COVID-19.

"Many challenges continued to surface where much of them left us extremely exhausted-- especially for my little sister," Martie Bautista, a former Lady Eagles player, said in a Facebook post.

"It is to our despondency to announce that my sister is now finally at peace and with God... We appreciate all the prayers you are sending out to our family and we are here for you as we mourn together."
