PH posts record-high coronavirus recoveries as tally hits 54,000


MANILA - The Philippines on Saturday recorded a new single-day high of recovered coronavirus patients, according to the Department of Health (DOH), as the total infections rose to 54,222.

Official figures showed there were 807 new patients given a clean bill of health, surpassing the previous record of 489 recoveries on July 5. The tally of recoveries stood at 14,037.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases in the country crossed 54,000, with 1,387 new confirmed infections recorded. The health ministry has reported more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases for the past 9 days.

Of Saturday's new infections, 918 were classified as "fresh cases" and 469 as "late cases," the DOH said in its latest bulletin.

Under the agency's new reporting system, fresh cases are those validated within the past 3 days, while late cases refer to test results that were released to patients 4 days ago or earlier.

Metro Manila had 261 fresh cases, followed by Central Visayas with 62, while 595 came from other regions altogether.

Meanwhile, of the 469 late cases, 178 came from Metro Manila, 15 from Central Visayas and 276 from other regions.

The health department also reported 12 new fatalities from the contagious disease, bringing the death toll to 1,372.

To date, the Philippines has 38,813 active COVID-19 cases, of which majority of the patients are exhibiting mild symptoms.

Worldwide, the novel coronavirus, which first emerged in Wuhan City in China's Hubei province, has infected 12.5 million people and claimed 560,000 lives, a running tally from the US-based Johns Hopkins University showed
