Anthony Bourdain, Stan Lee and other notable deaths in 2018

From soul diva Aretha Franklin to astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and former UN chief Kofi Annan, here are some of the notable figures who passed away in 2018:

- 15: Dolores O'Riordan, singer-songwriter of Irish band The Cranberries, drowned accidentally in a hotel bath aged 46.

- 27: Ingvar Kamprad, Swedish founder of affordable flat-pack furnishing empire IKEA, passed away at home aged 91.

- February -

- 21: US preacher Billy Graham, spearhead of a worldwide evangelical Christian movement and spiritual counsel to several US presidents, passed away aged 99.

- 24: Bollywood megastar Sridevi Kapoor drowned in a hotel bathtub at the age of 54. She had appeared in around 300 films, including blockbusters such as "Mawali" ("Scoundrel").

- 10: French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, famous for the "little black dress", died in his sleep aged 91.

- 14: Physicist Stephen Hawking, Britain's most famous modern-day scientist and known for popularising the secrets of the universe, died at home aged 76. Suffering from a form of motor-neurone disease, he spent most of his life in a wheelchair and communicated via a computer speech synthesiser.

- 2: Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, former wife of Nelson Mandela and an anti-apartheid icon in her own right, died in hospital aged 81 and after a long illness.

- 13: Oscar-winning Czech-born film director Milos Forman, behind "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus", died aged 86 after a short illness.

- 17: Barbara Bush, the wife of US president George H.W. Bush (in office between 1989 and 1993) and mother of president George W. Bush (2001-2009), passed away aged 92.

- 20: Swedish superstar DJ Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, was found dead in Muscat aged 28.

- 14: Author Tom Wolfe, acerbic chronicler of American society known for novels such as "The Bonfire of the Vanities", died aged 88 in hospital where he was being treated for an infection.

- 22: US literary giant Philip Roth, a towering figure among 20th-century novelists and 1998 Pulitzer Prize winner, died of heart failure aged 85.

- June -

- 5: American handbag designer Kate Spade committed suicide at the age of 55.

- 8: US chef and television food show host Anthony Bourdain, 61, committed suicide in Alsace, eastern France, where he was filming for his Emmy-winning CNN food and travel programme "Parts Unknown".

- 18: XXXTentacion, a 20-year-old rapper whose grim rhymes propelled him to the top of the US chart, was shot in Florida.

- 5: French filmmaker Claude Lanzmann, director of the landmark nine-and-a-half hour Holocaust documentary "Shoah", died aged 92.

- 6: French "chef of the century" Joel Robuchon, who at one point held a record 32 Michelin stars at the same time, died aged 73 from pancreatic cancer.

- 11: British writer V.S. Naipaul, a famously outspoken 2001 Nobel laureate who wrote on the traumas of post-colonial change, passed away aged 85.

- 16: Aretha Franklin, American "Queen of Soul" behind hits such as "Respect" and "Natural Woman", died of cancer aged 76. Her nearly eight-hour funeral was attended by former presidents, stars and musical royalty.

- 18: Kofi Annan, secretary general of the United Nations between 1997 and 2006, died after a short illness at age 80. He was given a state funeral in his native Ghana.

- 25: John McCain -- US Republican senator, Vietnam War hero and two-time presidential candidate -- died aged 81 following a year-long battle with brain cancer.

- 6: Hollywood star Burt Reynolds, best known for alpha-male roles in the 1970s and 1980s, died aged 82 after a heart attack.

- 1: Charles Aznavour, legendary French-Armenian crooner, passed away at the age of 94.

- 15: Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft with Bill Gates and later a billionaire and philanthropist, died from cancer aged 65.

- 22: Gilberto Benetton, one of the founders of the eponymous Italian clothes brand, died aged 77 after an illness.

- November -

- 12: American comics legend Stan Lee -- co-creator of global action hero favourites including Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men and Black Panther -- passed away aged 95.

- 26: Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci, whose work includes

"Last Tango In Paris" and Oscar-winning "The Last Emperor", died aged 77 at his home in Rome.

- 30: Former US president George H.W. Bush died aged 94, just months after his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush. They were the parents of president George W. Bush.

- December -

- 3: Belgium's richest man, multi-billionaire entrepreneur Albert Frere, passed away aged 92.

- 8: Lyudmila Alexeyeva, a Soviet-era dissident who became a symbol of resistance in modern-day Russia as a leading rights activist, died after a long illness at the age of 91.

- 28: Amos Oz, celebrated Israeli novelist and passionate advocate of peace between Israelis and Palestinians, died of cancer aged 79.

Anthony Bourdain dead at 61, CNN says

US celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, host of CNN's food-and-travel-focused "Parts Unknown" television series, has died at the age of 61, the network said on Friday.

Bourdain hanged himself, CNN said. 

He was found dead in a hotel room in Strasbourg, France, where he had been working on an upcoming episode of his program, CNN added.

Bourdain's death was the second suicide this week of a high-profile American figure. 

Designer Kate Spade, who built a fashion empire on her signature handbags, was found dead in her New York apartment of suicide on Tuesday.

Bourdain visited the Philippines twice for his show, “Parts Unknown.”


He first visited Manila in 2016 and returned last year to recruit food vendors who could be part of his street food market in New York.

The celebrity chef was known to be a fan of Filipino food, including lechon, and sisig.

Suicide rates rose in nearly every US state from 1999 to 2016, according to figures released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.

MANILA - Aside from visiting a Korean restaurant in Malate on Thursday, television personality, chef, and best-selling author Anthony Bourdain appeared to have also stopped by a branch of Jollibee.

A photo of the 59-year-old Bourdain eating at the local fast food chain has been circulating online. A Facebook user named Alfredo Lupe posted it on his account with the caption: "Nagmeryenda lang ako, nakita ko pa si Anthony Bourdain sa Jollibee! Mukhang enjoy sya sa chickenjoy!"

This is not the first time that Bourdain was able to eat at Jollibee. Back in 2013, Bourdain visited a Jollibee branch in Los Angeles and tried halo-halo, a menu item he described as "oddly beautiful."

Bourdain's last visit in the country was in 2008 for his Travel Channel show, "No Reservations." During that trip, he made stops in Manila, Pampanga, and Cebu.

Jollibee dubbed 'most inventive food spot' in US

MANILA – New York-based website Thrillist has featured the homegrown restaurant chain Jollibee, calling it “the most inventive fast food spot” in the United States.

In an article titled “Jollibee has the most unusual fast food in the country,” Thrillist writer Dan Gentile noted the restaurant’s fast food offerings, which go beyond the usual burger and fries combination of McDonald’s and other rival companies.

Jollibee is known for serving items such as spaghetti, burger steak, pancit, tuna pie, corned beef, macaroni soup and garlic bangus, among others.

“They are the Captain Planet of fast food,” according to the article, referring to the fictional hero summoned by five teenagers.

The Thrillist article also singled out Jollibee’s Amazing Aloha burger, saying it is “like a crazy foreign fast food item that somehow snuck onto American soil.”

The Amazing Aloha burger, which was once hailed by Businessweek as one of the “world’s most original burgers,” was featured by chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain.

“That’s a very tasty burger,” Bourdain said.

According to its website, Jollibee has over 750 stores, with branches in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Vietnam, Brunei, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Zagat guide lists must-try Pinoy dishes

MANILA – An influential restaurant guide recently published an article about Filipino cuisine, which is said to have “become increasingly celebrated around the United States.”

In an article on Zagat published last January 10, writer Carey Jones listed “nine Filipino dishes you need to know,” while giving recommendations on where to order them in the US.

Leading the list is lechon or roast pig, which was once dubbed by chef and television host Anthony Bourdain as “the best pig ever.”

“The full pork feast is primarily for special occasions, while at restaurants in the US, you’re more likely to find dishes such as lechon kawali – the deep-fried pork belly,” Jones wrote.

Other Filipino dishes that are included in the list are adobo (meat or seafood braised in garlic, vinegar and soy sauce), lumpia (spring rolls), kare-kare (peanut stew), sisig (pig’s head and liver seasoned with calamansi and chili peppers), tocino (sweet cured meat), sinigang (sour soup with meat or seafood and vegetables), pancit (stir-fried noodles) and balut (fertilized duck eggs).

Chef, TV personality and food writer Andrew Zimmern recently included Filipino cuisine in his list of Top 10 food trends for 2013 in the US.

“This is the year, finally, that Pinoy foods have their day in the sun. Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese: One by one, they’ve all delighted and inspired American diners, and Filipino cuisine is next,” Zimmern wrote in an article published in People Magazine.

Last year, a magazine in New York placed the spotlight on Filipino food, saying that the Big Apple is “finally ready” for our cuisine.

Anthony Bourdain tries Jollibee halo-halo

MANILA, Philippines – Chef, author and TV personality Anthony Bourdain visited a Jollibee restaurant in Los Angeles and ate halo-halo for his new show, “Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown,” which aired on CNN on Sunday.


Filipino food is not new for Bourdain, who did an entire episode on the Philippines for his previous show, “Anthony Bourdain No Reservations,” where he visited Chinatown and ate lechon, among others.

Sunday’s episode was actually about L.A.’s Koreatown and Bourdain was accompanied by two guides, Korean-Americans Roy Choi and David Choe. Among the restaurants he visited were Dong Il Jang, where he ate bulgogi; and Chego, where he tried the popular kimchi Spam bowl.

But Bourdain’s food trip around Koreatown wasn’t limited to Korean food. He also visited Sizzler, supposedly for the very first time; and tried goat stew and fish curry at a Swadesh in the area’s Little Bangladesh section.

Also in the area is Jollibee, located near Sizzler, and here Bourdain had a taste of halo-halo, which CNN described as a dessert consisting of red beans, white beans, Jell-O, chick peas, coconut, shaved ice and flan.

"It makes no goddamn sense at all. I love it,” Bourdain said of the halo-halo, which he also called "oddly beautiful."

Bourdain even posted a photo of the halo-halo on his Twitter account.

Bourdain also tried two other Jollibee items, which are not available in the Philippines: the Aloha Burger, with a pineapple slice; and Little Big Bite, which CNN described as a “fried Spam slider.”
