LOS ANGELES — Game show host Alex Trebek, who as the brainy quizmaster of “Jeopardy!” became one of the most recognizable personalities on American television, died on Sunday at the age of 80, the show said on its official Twitter account.

The Canadian-born Trebek said in a YouTube video in March 2019 that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, vowing to beat the disease despite the long odds.

Trebek told fans in August 2019 he had completed chemotherapy, but he disclosed the following month that he had to restart treatment because of a setback.

He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends, the show’s tweet said.

Twenty years after “Jeopardy!” first aired in 1964, Trebek became the face of the show and turned it into a ratings powerhouse.

“Jeopardy!” which requires contestants to display their knowledge of a broad range of trivia topics by providing their answers in the form of a question, has consistently drawn more than 20 million viewers a week in the United States and Canada, making it the most-watched quiz show in those markets.

Its ratings have risen even higher when contestants have racked up several weeks of consecutive wins.

“Here’s the belief that lies at the core of Alex’s TV persona: ‘Jeopardy!’ itself, not he, is the star of the show,” Ken Jennings, a former “Jeopardy!” contestant who holds the record for the longest winning streak on the show, said of Trebek in a 2019 column in the New York Times.

“It’s hard to imagine any modern TV personality deftly avoiding the spotlight like that,” Jennings added.

Trebek was known for engaging contestants with straight-faced but witty banter and for his scholarly demeanor and scrupulous pronunciation.

Jennings compared Trebek, who hosted more than 7,000 episodes of “Jeopardy!” with the late news anchor Walter Cronkite and talk-show host Johnny Carson because his nightly presence on television had become a “matter of ritual.”

Trebek won six Emmy Awards for outstanding game-show host, most recently in 2019, and also received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy in 2011. The Hollywood Reporter said in a 2014 article that Trebek was earning $10 million a year.

Canada to California

Trebek was born in the nickel-mining city of Sudbury, Ontario, the son of a Ukrainian immigrant father and a French-Canadian mother.

He earned a degree in philosophy at the University of Ottawa, beginning his career in broadcasting while still attending school.

After hosting a number of television shows in Canada during the 1960s, Trebek was encouraged to move to California in 1973 by the late actor Alan Thicke, a fellow Canadian, to host a short-lived NBC game show called “The Wizard of Odds.”

In the following years, Trebek hosted a few other shows with equally quirky names, such as “High Rollers” and “Battlestars.”

None of them became an enduring success but they bolstered Trebek’s reputation in Hollywood and eventually paved the way for his joining “Jeopardy!”

Television personality Merv Griffin, along with his wife, Julann, came up with the idea for “Jeopardy! in the 1960s.”

Art Fleming, who died in 1995, served as the show’s original host in its initial run from 1964 to 1975 and in a 1978-79 revival.

When Griffin revived “Jeopardy!” again after a hiatus of several years, producers chose Trebek to host it and Trebek also helped produce the show for his first three seasons.

One of the gigs that helped him secure the position was a temporary role on “Wheel of Fortune,” another game show Griffin had created, according to an interview Trebek gave in 2007.

Viewers became oddly attached to the mustache Trebek sported from early in his career until he shaved it off in 2001. It made headlines when he grew back the mustache in 2014.

Trebek is survived by his wife, Jean, and their two adult children, Emily and Matthew.

Kylie Jenner introduces baby Stormi with an Instagram snap

LOS ANGELES - Kylie Jenner, the youngest of the celebrity Kardashian clan, revealed on Tuesday that she had named her new baby daughter Stormi, and posted the first picture of her.

Jenner, 20, posted a close-up photo on her Instagram account showing a baby dressed in pink clasping her pink manicured thumb.

The post was titled simply "Stormi."

Jenner announced on Sunday that her child with rapper Travis Scott was born on Feb. 1 and apologized for keeping her pregnancy secret from her 101 million Instagram followers and other fans.

Jenner has parlayed her family's "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" reality TV show into a lucrative cosmetics line.

Stormi is the second of 3 additions to the Kardashian clan this year. Half-sister Kim Kardashian and her rapper husband Kanye West announced the arrival in January of their third child, a girl they called Chicago, who was born to a surrogate.

Jenner's other half-sister, Khloe Kardashian, is 7 months pregnant with her basketball player boyfriend Tristan Thompson.

Stormi joins Kardashian cousins North, Saint, Reign, Dream, Mason and Penelope.

Khloe Kardashian reported to be pregnant with first child

LOS ANGELES - Reality star Khloe Kardashian, the younger sister of Kim Kardashian, is pregnant, multiple publications reported on Tuesday, days after Kylie Jenner, the youngest member of the celebrity family, was reported to be expecting her first child.

Celebrity news publications TMZ.com, Us Weekly and People Magazine, all citing unnamed sources, said Khloe Kardashian, 33, who is dating Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player Tristan Thompson, is three months pregnant with her first child.

A representative for Kardashian did not respond to requests for comment.

Kardashian made no mention of her reported pregnancy on social media on Tuesday. Her most recent Instagram post was a photograph of herself baring her flat midriff three days ago. Thompson also did not mention the news on his social media platforms.

The news comes just days after 20-year-old social media star Kylie Jenner was reported to be expecting a baby with her boyfriend of six months, rapper Travis Scott. She and her family have yet to confirm the pregnancy.

Kim Kardashian and her husband, rapper Kanye West, are also reported to be expecting their third child via a surrogate, due to be born next year, People Magazine reported earlier this month.

The pregnancy announcements coincide with the 10th anniversary of E! Network’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” show, which propelled the Kardashian and Jenner clan into the zeitgeist and made them one of America’s most successful reality franchises.

Did you know? 'Man v. Food' host also visited PH

Kim Kardashian bares butt, tries to 'break the internet'

MANILA - A fashion magazine has recently revealed their secret weapon to "break" the Internet: Kim Kardashian's naked butt.

As part of a campaign to go viral online, Paper enlisted the help of the reality television star and legendary French photographer Jean-Paul Goude.

"For our winter issue, we gave ourselves one assignment: Break the Internet. There is no other person that we can think of who is up to the task than one Kim Kardashian West. A pop culture fascination able to generate headlines just by leaving her house, Kim is what makes the web tick," Paper wrote on its website on Wednesday.

One of the two covers see Kardashian shedding her black evening gown to show off her oiled, naked behind -- a shot that seems to impress rapper and husband Kanye West.

On his official Twitter account, West posted the photo with the caption: "#ALLDAY".

On the other cover, Kardashian is actually fully clothed. She is seen wearing a black gown, recreating the Frenchman's famous "Champagne Incident" portrait.

"And they say I didn't have a talent...try balancing a champagne glass on your ass LOL #BreakTheInternet," Kardashian wrote on her official Twitter account shortly after she announced the two sets of covers.

Paper then teased: "All we can say about the images inside, which we'll be releasing on Thursday, is...holy f****** shit. This issue has got so much more in store so be sure to check back next week."

10 'cutest TV newsmen' in PH ranked

MANILA -- An ABS-CBN regional anchor topped this year's edition of an online magazine's "Cutest TV Newsmen," with three other Kapamilya personalities making it to the list.

In a feature published Friday by Spot.ph, ABS-CBN Bacolod's Ryan Gamboa ranked first among 10 Filipino newsmen described as "eye candy."

Gamboa co-anchors the ABS-CBN News Channel's (ANC) noontime telecast "Dateline Philippines," from the network's news center in Negros Occidental.

"We like the fact that he describes himself as a 'sugarcane farmer, mad scientist, Jedi knight, and mutant.' We're suckers for good-looking geeks," it added.

The Top 10 list, said to be an offering of "brainless fun," also included ANC's "Executive Class" host David Celdran, who placed 2nd; ABS-CBN Sports commentator Anton Roxas, 4th; and "TV Patrol" reporter Jeff Canoy, 6th.

Grace Lee to replace Shalani in TV show: report

MANILA, Philippines -- Shalani Soledad and Grace Lee now have more than a common romantic past as a shared history.

Lee, a radio and TV personality, will be taking on the hosting duties vacated by Soledad on a primetime variety program co-hosted by 4 others, including former Kapamilya star Willie Revillame.

Lee will start her stint on the show on Saturday, according to entertainment journalist Ricky Lo in a report published Friday by the Philippine Star.

Before he was romantically linked to Lee -- who admitted "dating [him] for a couple of months" -- President Benigno Aquino III was in a relationship with Soledad for nearly two years.

The two broke up in October 2010 reportedly due to their busy schedule. At the time, Soledad was a member of the Valenzuela City council.

It was in November 2010 when she was tapped by Revillame to co-host his program.

Now married to Pasig City Representative Roman Romulo, Soledad is set to run for Congress in the 2013 midterm elections under the administration-led Liberal Party-Nacionalista Party, Nationalist People’s Coalition.

Meanwhile, Lee became more well-known because her publicized relationship with Aquino.

It was in May this year, however, when the Korean TV host ended rumors of a blooming romance with the president, saying, "We're only friends now."

Nancy breaks silence on Hayden 'romance'

MANILA, Philippines -- Former actress and TV personality Nancy Castiglione has finally gone on record to respond to her alleged romance with former doctor Hayden Kho, which spelled the controversial breakup between him and his long-time partner, celebrity doctor Vicki Belo.

"After paglabas nung issue na 'yun, super nagulat ako. kahit 'yung mga sagot ko hindi ko alam kung saan nanggaling. So pagkatapos noon nag-research ako. Until now, hindi ko talaga alam how I was involved," Castiglione told reporters during the 2012 Esquire Ball held Tuesday night.

Last February, Castiglione was identified as the third party in the separation between Kho and Belo. The former actress was reportedly seen kissing the former doctor at a bar in Taguig.

Following the spread of rumors about the alleged affair, Belo, in a statement, said that "she is letting [Kho] go," so he won't have to "hide" his romance with Castiglione.

Castiglione, who is married and with children of her own, at the time, vehemently denied any involvement with Kho. She maintained, through her manager Arnold Vegafria, that she is merely friends with the former medical practitioner.

Until Tuesday evening, Castiglione had refused to speak of the rumored romance in her interviews.

"I never have time to get pissed off," Castiglione said, referring to her supposed "role" in Kho and Belo's breakup. "Nanay ako ng dalawang lalaking kambal, so I didn't have time. And I'm at an age now na 'yung mga importante sa 'kin iba na."

Explaining her long-kept silence on the issue, she added: "You know, you speak when you know what you're talking about. Nagulat talaga ako. Wala akong alam. Ba't ako magsasalita?"

Eight months since the controversy erupted, Castiglione said she only wishes for the parties involved to "move on" and be happy. She also expressed regret over the end of Belo and Kho's relationship.

"We haven't talked unfortunately since then," she said, referring to Kho. "It's unfortunate, honestly. Medyo sayang, just to keep everyone happy and let it just go."

After the breakup, Belo remains single despite being linked to a number of men, including her yoga instructor Al Galang. Kho, meanwhile, is staging his showbiz comeback via a movie under Regal Films.

Grace Lee Turns Hot Topic; Singer Blows Top Over Poster

MANILA, Philippines — Now that Korean Grace Lee is the latest “apple of the eye” of swinging bachelor, President Noynoy, expect the TV personality to be the subject of much public interest. While we wish the dating couple well, it will be interesting to see if she gets the nod of the sisters of the President.

• During a recording for the promo of her latest show, this singer lost her cool when she saw a poster of another singer at odds with her daughter. Although she seemed to be joking when she blurted out invectives, a source said, her staff immediately removed the poster and placed it back when the studio session was over.

• Iza Calzado is the most recent GMA artist to jump over rival network’s fence. Iza had been very vocal about not holding any grudge against her former talent management office when she decided to transfer. “It’s just that the projects presented to her are so irresistible – a soap opera, a reality show hosting job, Sunday variety show, and very good episodes of “Maalaala Mo Kaya.” The source added that Iza already closed three new endorsement deals upon transfer. Lucky girl.

• Congratulations are in order for GMA Films’ “The Road.” We heard that the movie will be part of the international “Scream Festival” happening in the US in May. If plans don’t miscarry, there will definitely be a grand premiere night when the festival begins.

• Marvin Agustin is one cool daddy. We spotted him at Enchanted Kingdom two Saturdays ago with his twin boys during a charity event he hosted for the children of Operation Smile in celebration of his birthday.

• Cesar Montano is in New York meeting with some Hollywood producers for a project when news about him being appointed to the Optical Media Board (OPM) surfaced this week. However, he told us that he has yet to receive any communication from MalacaƱang about it. Cesar will be coming back on Feb. 10 for the remaining promo schedules of “Hitman.” Premiere night will be on Feb. 21 at SM Megamall Cinema 10.

• Newlyweds Cong. Roman Romulo and Councilor Shalani Soledad-Romulo spent their honeymoon in Paris, we heard. The couple was billeted at Vicki Belo’s rented flat in downtown Paris, according to our source.

• We heard that the perfume business of Hayden Kho Jr. has already been acquired by the Ever Bilena group, which leaves much room for the controversial former doctor to pursue again his career in showbiz. We heard that he is now being managed by Stages under Carlo Orosa.

Grace Lee: PNoy courts 'like any normal guy'

MANILA, Philippines – Following President Noynoy Aquino’s admission that they are dating, TV and radio personality Grace Lee has become more open in disclosing some details about their burgeoning bond.

Despite holding the highest post in the country, PNoy’s courtship style remains “normal,” according to the Philippines-based Korean.

“I don’t know about calling everyday, I don’t wanna divulge too much details, pero yes very normal, like any normal guy,” Grace said in an interview on “24 Oras,” Feb. 2.

She has also received “a couple of chocolates and flowers” from the chief executive.

“He’s just very sweet,” Grace added.

Although she’s been part of the entertainment industry for some years now, Grace is still surprised by the outpour of attention she’s receiving. Reporters and photographers of international wire agencies, such as Agence-France Presse, were seen tailing her on Thursday, “24 Oras” stated.

It took a while for the GMA-7 showbiz reporter to speak up about PNoy because she “wanted this to be more private.”

“We’re still at the stage of getting to know each other. And I didn’t want so many people having so much to say about what’s going on between us... I don’t think I’m gonna waste my time, spending hours of my day trying to know a man if I was not interested at all,” she related.

She may have evaded the question about PNoy’s chances on winning her heart, but Grace generously attached positive adjectives to him. At one point, she said, “He is a wonderful person…”

Grace did not reveal when she and PNoy began dating. It can be recalled though that their paths first crossed June last year at the inauguration of Korea Electric Power Corp. power plant in Cebu. She hosted the said event.

The 29-year-old DJ had a closer, longer encounter with the president before Christmas through an interview they did for her radio program. According to “24 Oras,” their conversation ranged from serious topics like his visions for the country, to lighter ones such as his taste in music.

“He’s brilliant, he is the most intelligent man I’ve met in my life,” Grace enthused.

She appreciates that PNoy admitted that they are “seeing each other.”

"He’s such a gentleman. When he acknowledged it, I think that was out of respect for me because he doesn’t need this… but he did and that tells you a lot about what kind of man he is.

“He’s such an inspiring character,” Grace said in a separate interview with “TV Patrol,” adding, “To be liked by a man who leads a country is very flattering.”

While things are looking up for the two, Grace, as well as her family, are “worried… on the public attention.”

“I just didn’t think it was gonna happen this fast,” she said.

She also got concerned about their racial difference. Nevertheless, “it’s the reason why I fell in love with the Philippines in the first place, so accepting and so understanding.”

Grace merely laughed off speculations that PNoy has already proposed to her.

“We are starting so sana everyone would give us time and space to get to know each other more,” she said.

Reporter Mario Dumaual then told Grace, “love knows no age gap or age differences.”

“At least whatever we have right now will serve as an inspiration to a lot of people out there. But aside from that, I would like to believe so as well,” she said with a smile.

For PNoy’s 52nd birthday on Feb. 8, Grace said, “What can you give the President, right? It’s so difficult. But I’m brewing something up. Surprise na lang.”

“You can give your love,” Mario teased her.

Laughing, she responded, “Oo nga eh, puwede rin.”

Her manager, Arnold Vegafria, deemed that the recent turn of events marks a big change for Grace.

“But the most important dapat, guard your heart,” he pointed out on “24 Oras.”
