Miss International bet eyes pageant grand slam for PH

MANILA -- Bea Rose Santiago, the Philippines' candidate to Miss International, is eyeing to close the country's succesful year in pageants with a grand slam.

The Masbate-born beauty will leave for Tokyo, Japan on Friday in time for the kick-off of the 53rd Miss International pageant, which will hold its coronation night on December 17.

"I want to represent our country very well," Santiago said during a send-off event held Wednesday noon by Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc., the local licensee of the international competition.

"I want to give a merry Christmas to the Philippines. I want to close the pageant this year with a slam," said Santiago, who was earlier accompanied on stage by her fellow candidates in the Binibining Pilipinas 2013 pageant.

Dubbed the "Gold" batch of beauty queens -- the national competition celebrated its 50th anniversary this year -- the group has produced back-to-back successes for the Philippines in pageants.

Mutya Datul won Miss Supranational in Belarus in September, Cindy Miranda finished in the Top 10 of Miss Tourism Queen International in China in October, and Ariella Arida placed 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe last month.

Megan Young, who is not part of this Binibining Pilipinas batch, was also recently crowned Miss World in Indonesia.

Santiago, with the Miss International finals night set only a week before Christmas, will represent the Philippines in the last major international pageant this year.

Asked if she thinks the country has "saved the best for last," a confident Santiago said, "I hope so."

"I'm going to give my best. I want to give honor to us, and especially to my girls," she added, referring to her fellow beauty queens. "They've inspired me."

"I'm very, very happy to represent our country for Miss International. I leave it all to God. I pray every night," she said. "Kung kaya ko, I will give my best. I'm going there not as Bea Santiago, 20, from Masbate. I'm going there as Bea Santiago, Philippines!"

As with Arida's Miss Universe bid in November, Santiago said she will dedicate her stint in Tokyo to the Filipinos who were badly affected by super typhoon "Yolanda," one of the deadliest natural disasters to hit the Philippines.

"For me, what they need the most now is probably happiness," she said. "And if I win, if I make it, that will bring happiness to them, to make them more proud and happy this Christmas."

"Iyon ang gusto kong ipakita sa mga tao -- na the Philippines, no matter what happens to us, kahit na bagyo man tayo... I'm going to bring the storm in Japan, that's what I'm going to do," she said.

How Latinas treated Ariella in Miss Universe

MANILA -- Ariella Arida admitted she was apprehensive about meeting some candidates in Miss Universe, as she arrived in host country Russia amid a controversy surrounding her allegedly offensive comment about Latinas in the pageant.

The 24-year-old Laguna-born beauty arrived home Tuesday afternoon after finishing 3rd runner-up in the 62nd Miss Universe pageant, where Venezuela's Gabriela Isler was crowned winner.

During a press conference shortly after her arrival in the Philippines, Arida was asked to relate how she interacted with the Latinas in Miss Universe in light of her earlier comment on their English-speaking skills.

Before leaving for Russia early this month, Arida mentioned how Latina contestants in international pageants have difficulty "completing a sentence in English."

The comment was brought up by radio personality Mo Twister, and was subsequently defended by Arida's peers in the local pageant scene. Arida herself apologized for the comment later on.

When asked Tuesday who among her fellow contestants she formed close relationships with, Arida said, laughing, "Actually close ko si Panama (Carolina Brid), si Spain (Patricia Rodríguez) and Venezuela."

Arida was then asked if any issue surfaced between her and the group of Latinas in Miss Universe. Explaining she was nervous about meeting them in Moscow, Arida said she was relieved her apprehensions were unfounded.

"Ako, actually, nag-reach out ako ta's parang ewan ako, nag-e-explain ako, hindi nila alam kung ano 'yung sinasabi ko. Parang ganun," she said.

"So wala po, sobrang... Pagpunta ko do'n, sobrang concerned nga ako baka mamaya galit sila sa akin. Syempre, hindi nila alam kung ano 'yung real story, pero wala, pagpunta ko po doon, ang healthy ng environment," Arida added.

The beauty queen was also happy to share that she became close with Brazil's Jakelyne Oliveira, who earlier had to deny being behind a Twitter account criticizing Arida for her Latina remark.

"Si Miss Brazil, close din kami, kasi nga... Actually ako 'yung lumapit sa kanya because of the Twitter thing. Siya din nag-explain sa akin na hindi totoo 'yon, na wala siyang Twitter and all. Sobrang close po, sobrang healthy ng environment," Arida said.

Interestingly, Arida was the only non-Latina in the top 5 contestants of Miss Universe. Placing runners-up to Isler, in order, were Rodríguez, Ecuador's Constanza Báez, Arida, and Oliveira.

With her 3rd runner-up finish, Arida replicated the success of Shamcey Supsup, the Philippines' candidate in the 2011 pageant. Janine Tugonon and Venus Raj finished 1st runner-up in 2012 and 4th runner-up in 2010, respectively.

The Philippines is still hoping to produce its third Miss Universe winner after Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.

Arida, Donaire brought smiles to Filipinos

MANILA – Malacañang on Sunday thanked beauty queen Ariella Arida and Filipino boxer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire for bringing pride to the country during these trying times.

Speaking to radio dzRB on Sunday, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte congratulated Arida and Donaire for their respective victories.

“We extend our congratulations to Ms. Arida and the Filipino Flash. We appreciate their efforts to bring a bit of smile to Filipinos who are going through so much,” she said.

Arida finished third runner-up in Miss Universe 2013, a feat she dedicated to her countrymen who were devastated by super typhoon "Yolanda" last Friday.

Donaire, on the other hand, won against Armenian boxer Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan in the ninth round of their 10-round featherweight showdown in Texas on Sunday.

“No doubt that Filipinos will rise again,” Valte said.

Tagged as the world's most powerful typhoon this year, Yolanda hit the Visayas last Friday leaving thousands of people dead.

Philippines vs Spain for Miss Universe crown?

Miss Universe to be crowned in Russia for first time

MOSCOW - Women representing 86 countries will vie for the Miss Universe crown Saturday at the final of the 61-year-old beauty contest, which is being held in Russia for the first time.

But the decision to stage the show in Moscow has sparked a fresh debate over Russia's new law banning "homosexual propaganda", a measure that prompted the original US co-host to pull out.

The glitzy contest will be held at a concert hall on the edge of Moscow and beamed around the world's television screens to an audience of around two billion people.

The show, which starts at 10:00 pm Moscow time (1800 GMT), will begin with judges whittling down the 86 contestants to a final 16. The women will then face an interview round.

Finally last year's winner, Olivia Culpo of the United States, will crown her successor.

Among those widely tipped to take the crown are Miss Philippines, 24-year-old chemistry graduate Ariella Arida, and Miss Spain, 23-year-old actress and model Patricia Rodriguez.

The final will be judged by a panel including rock singer Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Former Spice Girls singer Melanie Brown will host the event with US television presenter Thomas Roberts.

The contest, whose slogan is "confidently beautiful," was first held in 1952 in Palm Beach in the United States. It still requires the women not to be married or pregnant.

Complete with a swimsuit round, the contest remains hugely popular, particularly in Central and South America.

'People like me deserve equal rights'

The choice of Moscow as the venue has prompted a new debate over Russia's disregard for gay rights.

The original co-host, Andy Cohen, who is gay, refused to come in protest at a controversial law banning the promotion of homosexuality to minors that President Vladimir Putin signed in the summer.

On the other hand, his replacement Roberts, who is also openly gay, has justified his attendance while condemning Russia's homophobic legislation, saying he hopes to be a positive example to the gay community.

"I think I'm here to promote that people like me deserve equal rights, because we are no different than anyone else," Roberts told AFP.

The owner of the show's organisation, outspoken US property magnate Donald Trump, at a news conference on Saturday acknowledged concerns about holding the contest in Russia due to the gay rights situation.

"Certainly as you know it has been an issue and it was not taken very lightly. I talked to a lot of people," Trump said.

But Trump said the show's participants had all wanted to come and he praised Roberts.

"As you know, Thomas is gay. He's very proud to be here. And he's going to do a fantastic job."

Trump said earlier that he has issued an invitation to Putin, but it remains unclear whether the Russian leader will show up.

Trump also warned the security leaker Edward Snowden, who has received asylum in Russia after revealing details of massive surveillance operations, that he was barred.

"Message to Edward Snowden, you're banned from @MissUniverse. Unless you want me to take you back home to face justice!" he wrote.

Snowden is believed to be living in or near Moscow after leaving its Sheremetyevo airport for a secret address in August.

Performing at the show will be pop singer Emin Agalarov, whose family company built the venue. He has made a video with the current Miss Universe, Culpo.

The singer, known as Emin, is also the son-in-law of the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and performed at the Eurovision song contest when it was held in Baku last year.

Russia won Miss Universe in 2002, but the policewoman Oksana Fyodorova was dethroned after US shock jock Howard Stern provoked her into chatting about her sex life. She now presents a children's television show.

Ariella Arida tipped to win Miss Universe?

MOSCOW -- Russia on Tuesday began hosting Miss Universe for the first time in the pageant's 61-year history, with contestants from 86 countries shimmying along a catwalk in a concert hall in Moscow.

Politics came near to overshadowing the glitz as one US host refused to come in protest at an anti-gay law, while the contest's owner, Donald Trump, declared US leaker Edward Snowden, who is living in hiding in Russia, persona non grata.

Tuesday's preliminary round saw participants strut across a stage with a backdrop of onion domes, first in black and red bikinis, and then in sparkling and slinky evening dresses.

The women did not speak except to give their name and country. The biggest cheers went to the Russian contestant as well as those from Mexico and the Philippines, who were greeted by flag-waving fans.

The winner will be crowned at the main show on Saturday, which includes an interview round.

The judges for the main show will include Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and flamboyant Russian pop king Filipp Kirkorov, while ex-Spice Girls star Mel B will co-host.

The organizers promise the unveiling of a million-dollar "emerald, ruby and diamond" swimming costume on Saturday, which the winner will get to wear.

While hardly a trail-blazer on gender issues, Miss Universe this year has prompted a row on gay rights.

The show's initial co-host Andy Cohen, who is openly gay, pulled out in August because of the choice of Russia as the venue.

He criticized a law passed by Putin in June that bars promoting homosexuality in the presence of minors and has prompted international concern that it can be used to crack down on gay pride events.

However NBC host Thomas Roberts, who is also gay and has married his partner, has taken over the role.

"I choose to offer my support of the LGBT community in Russia by going to Moscow and hosting this event as a journalist, an anchor and a man who happens to be gay," he said in a statement, while calling Russia's treatment of gay people "unacceptable."

Miss USA, Erin Brady, said she understood why Cohen pulled out.

"I think a lot of people had mixed emotions coming here. If that's something he believed in and he didn't feel comfortable, then I support that," she told AFP.

But she said that Roberts "had a different outlook on it, he thought: well you know what, I want to come here and show people that it's OK."

The show's billionaire owner Trump took to Twitter last month to bar National Security Agency leaker Snowden from attending the show.

"Message to Edward Snowden, you're banned from @MissUniverse. Unless you want me to take you back home to face justice!" he wrote.

Snowden is believed to be living in or near Moscow after leaving its Sheremetyevo airport for a secret address in August.

Trump issued an invitation to Putin, however, telling NBC in October that: "We have invited Vladimir Putin and I know for a fact that he wants very much to come."

"It would be beautiful to have him there and I would be honored to meet him," said Miss USA Brady.

The contest began in Palm Beach in 1952 and still bans its contestants from being married or pregnant. Complete with swimsuit round, the contest remains hugely popular, particularly in Central and South America.

Widely tipped to take the crown this year is Miss Philippines, 24-year-old chemistry graduate, Ariella Arida.

Russia won Miss Universe in 2002, but the policewoman Oksana Fyodorova was dethroned after US shock jock Howard Stern provoked her into chatting about her sex life. She now presents a children's television show.

The show is being held in Crocus City Hall, a concert venue by the Moscow ring road. Performing at the show will be pop singer Emin Agalarov, whose family company built the venue. He has made a video with the current Miss Universe, American Olivia Culpo.

The singer, known as Emin, is also the son-in-law of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and performed at the Eurovision song contest when it was held in Baku last year.

Meet the other Pinay in Miss Universe

MANILA -- Ariella Arida, the Philippines' representative to Miss Universe, is competing with another full-blooded Pinay in her bid to bring home the country's third crown from the international pageant.

Riza Santos, who is representing Canada in the 62nd Miss Universe, may be familiar to some Filipino TV viewers, as she finished second place in the top-rating reality TV show "Pinoy Big Brother" in 2007.

Following her stint on the ABS-CBN program, the 27-year-old model went full-time in showbiz, with appearances on several Kapamilya programs, including the concert variety show "ASAP," and TV series like "Palos" and "I Love Betty La Fea."

Her time as an actress in the Philippines is even mentioned in her profile on the official Miss Universe website: "Riza has acted in four major Filipino films, including the box office hit 'Dobol Trobol,' where she played the leading lady and was trained in knife throwing."

Although born and raised in Canada, Santos is pure Filipino. Her father, Ruel Santos, is from Bulacan; while her mother, Dina Buenaventura, hails from Bataan.

Connecting with Pinoys

Before the Miss Universe kick-off late last month, Santos, along with her mom, even organized a charity event for an ailing Filipino girl's operation.

Held in Calgary, Santos' hometown in Canada, the event aimed to raise funds for 15-year-old Maria Fe, who is suffering from a life-threatening scoliosis.

Santos learned of the girl's condition through her aunt, Delia Tumak, who is based in Vancounver.

Among the attendees of the event was Philippine Ambassador to Canada, Leslie Gatan, who referred to the gathering as a "bayanihan among all Filipinos."

"Believe in yourself and to become the best that you can be," Santos said at the time, referring to the theme of the fund-raising activity.

"Once you do that, you really have the ability to become the best that you are and it gives you more opportunity, affords you more resources that you can help other people, people like Maria Fe who really does need our support," she said.

Meeting Ariella

Along with the 85 other candidates of Miss Universe, Santos is currently in Moscow, Russia, where the coronation night will be held on November 10 (Manila time).

On her page on image-sharing service Instagram, Santos posted a photo of her with Arida, who she said is her roommate.

In an earlier post by Arida also on Instagram, the Alaminos-born beauty shared a photo of her with Santos and Guam's Alixes Scott, captioned: "Mabuhay ang Pinay!"

It is unclear whether Scott also has Filipino roots.

Another candidate, Gabon's Jennifer Mouchita, was earlier reported to be half-Filipina. While Mouchita has said she has "origins" in the Philippines, she clarified in a Twitter post that her parents are both Gabonese.

Arida is hoping to surpass the successes of her last three predecessors in Miss Universe – Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup and Janine Tugonon – who all finished in the international pageant's Top 5.

Should Arida be named Miss Universe 2013, she will be third Filipino to win the crown after Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.

According to a statement sent by Miss Universe Philippines, Arida will be joined by beauty queens from Puerto Rico, Poland, Spain and Russia for the shoot of Mercedes-Benz, one of the sponsors in the international pageant.

“I was likewise fortunate to have been interviewed by the Fashion Channel in Russia and another by Fashion TV,” Arida was quoted as saying in the statement released Monday.

Arida and 26 other Miss Universe 2013 candidates were recently chosen to model creations by Lebanese designer Tony Ward during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Russia.

During the rehearsals for the event, Arida was also able to meet Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo of the United States.

Ariella Arida's suitor is Marian Rivera's ex

MANILA -- Miss Universe Philippines 2013 Ariella Arida confirmed in a television interview on Monday that she is being courted by the former boyfriend of actress Marian Rivera.

On ANC's "Headstart," Arida was asked by host Karen Davila if there is truth to rumors that Rivera's ex-boyfriend is wooing her.

"Yes," she said, without mentioning her suitor's name.

Arida stressed, however, that they are not yet in a relationship. "I have no boyfriend," she said. "The focus is Miss Universe."

When prodded further about the chances of her suitor, the beauty queen said: "After this pageant, let's see."

Arida is set to represent the Philippines in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant in Russia on November 9.

Rivera, meanwhile, recently starred in a movie with veteran comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas. She is currently in a relationship with actor Dingdong Dantes.

Ervic Vijandre?

While Arida did not name her suitor, she is widely believed to be referring to actor Ervic Vijandre, who was Rivera's boyfriend for eight years.

In an interview with the entertainment website Pep.ph last June, Vijandre admitted that he is courting Arida.

He said that he has been wooing Arida before she won the Miss Universe Philippines 2013 crown.

"Candidate pa lang, nanliligaw na ako," he said.

Vijandre and Rivera broke up in 2009.

Dad to use retirement pay to watch Ara in Miss Universe

MANILA – Ariella Arida, the Philippines’ bet to the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, said she was touched when her father decided to use his retirement pay just so they can fly to Russia next month to watch her compete.

“Nabigla ako when they both told me na manonood sila sa Russia live with my sister. Nakaka-touch. My father is a retired teacher and dati sinasabi namin na 'yung pera niya sa retirement, we want to put up a business. Pero hindi nila ginawa tapos that money, 'yun ang gagamitin nila to fly to Russia,” Arida told Charlene Gonzales in an interview on “The Buzz” on Sunday.

Since her parents discouraged her to join beauty pageants when she was younger, Arida said their decision means a lot to her.

“I’m so happy na doon gagamitin ng father ko ang pera niya para makita nila ako live,” she said.

The Laguna beauty, meanwhile, assured Filipinos that she will do her best as she represents the country in this year’s Miss Universe pageant.

While she feels pressured because of the consecutive wins of the Philippines in various beauty pageants, Arida said she will just use this as her motivation to bring home the crown.

“From the start nandoon na ang pressure, nung time pa nila Venus (Raj), Shamcey (Supsup) and Janine (Tugonon). Nung ako 'yung nanalo, nandoon na ang pressure. Ngayon tine-take ko na lang na positive lahat. Gagawin ko na lang na inspiration, motivation,” she said.

With just a little over a month until the much anticipated competition in November, Arida is hoping her fellow Filipinos will rally behind her just like in the previous years with Raj, upsup and Tugonon -- who all finished in the Top 5.

She also asked Filipinos to vote for her online to secure a spot in the competition’s top 15.

Arida is set to fly to Moscow, Russia on October 21. The pageant will be held on November 9.
