Masterful Nietes outpoints Sosa in flyweight debut

Donnie "Ahas" Nietes made a successful debut in the flyweight division, outpointing veteran Mexican fighter Edgar Sosa with a masterful performance in the main event of Pinoy Pride 38 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on Saturday night.

Nietes, the longest-reigning Filipino world champion, used his jab to keep his distance from Sosa while repeatedly scoring through his right straight and 1-2 combinations that wobbled the Mexican boxer at numerous points in the bout.

"Ahas" won with scores of 120-108 across the board, and claimed the WBO Inter-continental flyweight belt in the process.

"Hindi ako nagmamadali na i-knockout si Sosa," said Nietes after the bout. "Naghihintay ako ng timing na i-tumba siya, pero ang tibay din."

After a slow first round to feel out his opponent, Nietes found his rhythm in the second round as he used his jab to measure Sosa, and then unleashed combinations that unerringly found their target. A left uppercut proved to be Nietes' strongest punch of the round, as the hit clearly wobbled the Mexican.

Nevertheless, Nietes remained patient, weaving and slipping his way out of trouble while frustrating Sosa with his jabs. The Mexican never got any rhythm on offense, as most of his punches were blocked by Nietes or immediately countered.

With the victory, Nietes improved to 39-1-4 (win-loss-draw) in his career, while setting himself up for big fights in the flyweight division.

"Mate-test ko kung hanggang saan ang lakas ko dito sa 112 (pounds)," said the 34-year-old Nietes after the fight.

Sosa, meanwhile, dropped to 52-10.

Pinoy eatery to debut at LA City Hall

LOS ANGELES – A Filipino-American was granted the right to lease an abandoned shop in a mall beneath the Los Angeles City Hall building after a two-year process.

Pili Manila Grill owner Kanel Arceno explained why she chose that name for the restaurant.

"I had the pili nuts, and it’s short also for Pilipino, and pili-pili like turo-turo," said Arceno.

With Filipinos making up one of the largest ethnic groups of city employees, she’s hoping to put an American twist to Filipino classics at the city-owned mall where many workers and visitors spend their breaks.

"I wanted to bring Filipino food to the masses, to know what pancit, egg roll, a typical Filipino breakfast is. So I want them to experience the cuisine," she said.

While she’s building the restaurant to bring more Pinoy pride to the footsteps of City Hall, she’s also getting the community involved through crowdfunding.

Her Kickstarter campaign will end this week. Arceno had a surge in donors after some local TV appearances. She is now about halfway of her $30,000 Kickstarter goal needed to modernize the restaurant and fill the empty walls with the names of supporters.

“Being a part of history is being able to sign your wall, show that you helped build this space with your donations, with your contributions and support that we were able to grow this,” she explained.

She must reach that $30,000 goal before Thursday, otherwise she won’t get any of the Kickstarter pledges.

Under the city’s rules, the grill will debut regardless by October, bringing more Pinoy flavor to a workplace that has often celebrated its Filipino workers.

Arnel Pineda welcomes baby girl

MANILA, Philippines – Journey lead vocalist and Filipino pride Arnel Pineda's wife gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Friday.

Pineda, in a series of posts on his official Twitter page, confirmed that his wife Cherry gave birth to Thea Chenelle at around 6 p.m. on Friday.

"Welcome to the world our new little bundle of joy and angel. Baby Thea Chenelle has officially arrived last night around 6 p.m.," Pineda tweeted.

The international singing sensation also thanked those who offered prayers for the well-being of his wife and daughter, and took to the micro-blogging site to show his appreciation for "mothers' sacrifice."

"Thanks to all the offered prayers. Both my wife and the little angel made it. I came to conclusion that the mothers are one of the bravest and most noble for the sacrifice they're making just to deliver the baby safe," Pineda said.

Pineda is also known to have a son, Cherub.

Pineda, who was born and raised in Manila, joined the American band Journey as its lead vocalist in 2007, after members of the long-running rock band found videos of the Pinoy pride singing their hits on video-sharing site YouTube.

Pineda, who replaced Journey's original vocalist Steve Perry, has since gone on tour with the band, and was recently made the subject of a film chronicling his rise to fame.
