Apple under investigation for unfair competition in Russia
MOSCOW - Apple is under investigation in Russia following a complaint from cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab and may be abusing its dominant position in smartphone apps, Russia's anti-monopoly watchdog said on Thursday.
Watchdog FAS said it was investigating why a new version of Kaspersky Lab's Safe Kids application had not been updated on the Apple operating system, resulting in a significant loss in functionality for the app.
It said Apple had released an updated version of its own app, Screen Time, which had similar functions to the Kaspersky program.

Shazam breaks 100-M monthly user mark
SAN FRANCISCO -- Shazam announced Wednesday that 100 million people use its song-recognition mobile service monthly in a 34 percent surge from a year earlier.
Shazam applications have been downloaded to more than 500 million mobile devices since the the 1999 launch of the firm, which said it was adding users at the rate of 13 million monthly.
The applications let people identify songs, television shows or even some ads by "listening" and then provides opportunities to make purchases or link to online content related to what was heard.
"Shazam is evolving from being a way to identify a song to a way for people to explore and connect with the world around them," chief executive Rich Riley said in a statement.
"Shazam now delivers a deeper discovery and content experience for music and TV, with retail, cinema and more coming soon."

Uber pulls into mobile dining and travel apps
SAN FRANCISCO -- Uber teamed up with dining and travel smartphone applications Wednesday as the controversial Internet-age car-hailing service moved to park itself at the heart of mobile lifestyles.
The San Francisco-based startup let about a dozen businesses such as Starbucks, Hyatt Hotels, United Airlines, TripAdvisor and restaurant reservation service OpenTable make it simple for people to summon Uber cars from inside their applications for smartphones or tablet computers.
"We're excited to partner with Uber to help TripAdvisor travelers conveniently find a ride to their destination in cities throughout the world," TripAdvisor senior vice president of global product Adam Medros said.
Uber also released a software kit to allow makers of mobile apps to link to its platform, expanding its reach with a tactic that has proven effective for other Internet firms including Facebook and ramps up pressure on Uber's rivals such as Lyft.
It means that after people book flights or make dinner reservations online, for example, they can easily arrange for Uber cars to get them to airports or restaurants.
A "My Reservations" section in the Hyatt mobile application will feature a button icon letting users summon Uber cars.
"Our partnership with Uber offers customers new opportunities to simplify their travel experience," United Airlines vice president of loyalty Praveen Sharma said.
Uber did not release information about revenue sharing or referral fees involved with its new partners.
Taxi industry fuming
The announcement came a day after Uber revealed that a political strategist who ran US President Barack Obama's winning campaign in 2008 has hopped on board at the startup.
David Plouffe will become senior vice president of policy and strategy at the firm beginning late September.
Plouffe will manage Uber's global policy and political activities, communications, and branding efforts, Uber chief executive Travis Kalanick said in a blog post, describing Plouffe as "a proven field general and strategist."
Plouffe's mission will include shepherding Uber "well beyond the challenges of the Big Taxi cartel and into the brave new world of software-powered transportation," according to Kalanick.
The Uber app, which allows clients to connect directly with "black car" services, has upset the established taxi set in several countries.
Uber delivers
As part of its ambitious expansion, Uber this week began testing the potential of having its drivers deliver over-the-counter medicine, candy, beauty supplies or other goods that might be fetched from neighborhood markets.
The service, called "Corner Store," lets people pay for items using Uber accounts on mobile devices and then have products delivered.
The test began on Tuesday and was limited to Washington, D.C.
"Forget racing to the store after a long day at the office," Uber said in an email message to members of the service in the US capital.
"We're bringing diapers, allergy medicine, toothpaste and over 100 other items to your doorstep in 10 minutes or less."
Uber is the most prominent of the apps that are shaking up the traditional taxi landscape in cities around the world.
It has already faced significant resistance from regulators, who accuse it of unfair competition and lack of standards.
Uber is only one of many new smartphone-dependent car services seen as bypassing strict regulations faced by licensed cab drivers.
Uber is present in more than 170 cities spread about dozens of countries.

Fans can follow World Cup action with apps
TORONTO -- Soccer fans eager to stay in the loop and follow their favorite teams and players during World Cup in Brazil can keep up with the action on their smartphones using apps created for the tournament.
Thirty-two national teams will compete in the World Cup, organized by the world soccer body FIFA, in 12 host cities during the competition that begins on Thursday and runs to July 13.
"Brazil is known for being the land of football, and now we host the biggest sporting event on the planet. The benefits are already being felt," said a spokesman for the Special Secretariat of the World Cup (Secopa), which is coordinating the competition in the state of CearĂ¡ in northeastern Brazil.
The new apps join a cornucopia of ways to follow the cup, including television and the Internet.
OneFootball Brasil, a company based in Berlin, has developed a new app for the 2014 World Cup for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone that provides scores and game news about fans' favorite teams and players.
"Soccer fans have a strong attachment to their teams and countries, and want to be there to cheer for them and feel like they've actually had a part in making their team win," said Jonathan Lavigne, the company's chief technology officer.
Users can pick a team, and the app creates a personalized feed of news, statistics and scores, along with push notifications for real-time updates.
The free app, which is available worldwide in 15 languages, also includes real-time, minute-by-minute commentary on games, match schedules, data on each player, and news and commentary on games and teams.
"Recently, our key player got injured and won't play in the World Cup, for example. This is addictive and emotional information that I need to know as a fan right when it happens," Lavigne explained.
Fans in the United States can stream all 64 games live on their smartphones with WatchESPN for Android, iOS, and Windows 8 with a cable subscription, and for free in Canada with the CBC 2014 FIFA World Cup app for iPhone and Android.
FIFA also has a free, official app, called FIFA, for iOS and Android. It provides scores, game schedules, headlines, photos and videos.
"The World Cup is the premier sporting event in the world, even bigger than the Olympics," said Jonathan Savage, senior vice president at TheScore, based in Toronto.
The TheScore app is available on iPhone, Android and Blackberry 10 devices worldwide in English. It enables soccer fans to track teams and players in a real-time personalized feed. Users can follow the World Cup League and customize the notifications they receive, including goals, red cards, half-time scores and match start and end times.
A total of 204 teams across six continents competed for a spot at the 2014 World Cup. Brazil has won the competition, which is held every four years, five times, according to FIFA.

Banking apps on Android phones most at risk of virus -Kaspersky
JERUSALEM - Banking applications on Android phones are most vulnerable to cyber crime, the chief executive and co-founder of Russian anti-virus software maker Kaspersky Lab said on Monday.
Eugene Kaspersky said 99 percent of mobile attacks are towards Android-based phones, since Apple has strict controls and does not allow third-party applications.
The most disturbing trend in cyber attacks was a growing shift to mobile devices from computers and a major cyber attack using mobile phones was bound to happen since cellular users are not properly protected, he told Reuters.
"I expect something really bad to happen to change people's minds and awareness," he said, noting that it took the Chernobyl virus in 1998 for people to properly protect their computers.
"Cyber crime is moving to mobile but people are not aware. It's still not as big as computer crime but it's growing fast. The trend is a very dangerous situation," he said at a cyber-tech conference in Israel, where he wants to open a research and development lab.
Kaspersky makes one of the top-selling anti-virus programmes in the United States, where it has gained market share in recent years against products from Symantec Corp, Intel's McAfee and Trend Micro.
He said it was hard to determine where most cyber attacks are coming from geographically but cyber criminals typically speak Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian.

Want to manage your finances better? Here are some apps
MANILA, Philippines - Managing your finances can be made much easier with some of the financial planning tools that are now available through your smart phone. Tracking your expenses, analyzing your budget, and scheduling payment of bills are just some examples of the many things that are easier to do with the apps.
Smart phones and apps offer many conveniences. For one, they allow you to record your transactions in real time. Since you almost always have your smart phone with you, you don’t have to get home to record your transaction in your spreadsheet. There are apps that let you store your receipts as well.
It’s also a very handy way to access your financial records. If you need information about your finances while you are at the bank, for instance, you can simply check your smart phone. They also provide you with a good recording system. You can synch your phone with your PC, providing you with an automatic back-up system. Best of all, it’s a paperless system, so you minimize waste.
Remember that apps are just a tool that would make financial planning easier for you. While some of these apps would give you financial advice, they do not take the place of financial planning. Also note that these apps process data based on what information it receives. Therefore, you should take pains to put in complete and accurate data. Use whatever advice the apps give in the context of your financial goals or as inputs that would guide your decision making process.
Apps can either run on Android, Apple’s IOS, or both platforms. Although most financial apps have been designed to be secure, exercise the same caution as you would in doing any online transaction.
For starters, check your own bank for their apps. The services offered vary but most would offer balance inquiry, balance transfers, and bills payments. At the same time, the Philippines’ top telecommunications carriers also offer financial services such as mobile wallets and mobile payments.

All you have to do is just refresh your account. This way, you do not have to log on to different online banking sites just to see your balance. If your bank is not among those that Koku can connect with, you can import your statements into Koku. The app also provides an analysis of your income and spending habits. Since it automatically syncs to iCloud, you will be able to access your account from anywhere using your Apple device.

Smartphone apps multiply, but so do germs
LAS VEGAS - It may be your best friend, but your smartphone is also probably teeming with germs.
As innovators descended on the Consumer Electronics Show, companies offering better sanitizing were also promoting the cause of cleanliness.
The technology show has long had a focus on health, but makers of sanitizing devices said people need to look in their pockets and purses to the microbes on their personal gadgets.
The smartphone "is always warm, stored in dark places, so bacterias are growing on your phone," said Dan Barnes, co-founder of Phonesoap, which was displaying its device which sanitizes a phone and recharges it.
Barnes said he got the idea after reading a study indicating "that mobile phones are 18 times dirtier than public bathrooms."
Barnes said his $50 device uses ultraviolet radiation which "kills the bacteria's DNA, so that they can't live on your phone anymore."
Similar devices were also seen at the huge electronics fair, including one called CleanBeats, which sanitizes, plays music and recharges two phones through a USB connection.
The CleanBeats device is based on NASA technology, and will soon hit the market with a $499 price tag, said spokesman Dennis Rocha for the California-based startup
The company website says its device produces "hydroperoxide catalytic molecules" to sanitize the surfaces of touchscreens.
