Pacquiao among Forbes' most powerful celebrities

World boxing superstar and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao has been included in Forbes magazine’s list of most powerful celebrities in the world for the year 2010.

Pacquiao ranked 55th out of the 100 richest and most powerful celebrities in the world this year, edging out Hollywood actors like Tom Cruise and George Clooney, according to Forbes’ website.

Television host Oprah Winfrey, meanwhile, was listed as the world’s most powerful celebrity in 2010, followed by singer Beyonce Knowles and Avatar director James Cameron.

Forbes estimated Pacquiao’s earnings from June 2009 to June 2010 at $42 million, $35 million of which he earned from his blockbuster fights against Joshua Clottey and Miguel Cotto.

Pacquiao’s next potential opponent, Mayweather, ranked higher than him at No. 31 with an estimated $65-million earning in the past year.

The magazine likewise acknowledged Pacquiao’s political influence, being the newly elected representative of the lone congressional district of Sarangani province in southern Philippines.

“While still regarded by many as the best boxer in the sport right now, Pac-Man (Pacquiao’s monicker) is also busy outside the ring. He was elected a member of Congress of the Philippines in May… The boxing world awaits a potential mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.," Forbes said.

Negotiations are still ongoing for a potential November 13 showdown between Pacquiao and Mayweather. - KBK, GMANews.TV

Cops: Man killed crying girl during World Cup game

McALLEN, Texas — Texas police have arrested a man accused of fatally beating his 2-year-old stepdaughter when she wouldn’t stop crying as he watched a World Cup game.

McAllen police say 27-year-old Hector Castro is expected to be charged Monday with murder.

Police Chief Victor Rodriguez says Castro told investigators that the toddler wouldn’t stop crying while he was trying to watch the U.S.-Ghana matchup on Saturday.

Rodriguez says the child was severely beaten and suffered several broken ribs. Police said a screw or bolt was forced down her throat in an apparent attempt to make it look like she choked to death.

Four other children in Castro’s apartment were placed with social workers.

Tampa News - 2 Tampa officers killed in Florida shooting

Two Tampa police officers are dead after being shot this morning after a car was pulled over on a routine traffic charge. Officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis, both 31, were shot in the head at 50th Street and 23rd Avenue, said Mayor Pam Iorio.

Hurricane Alex 2010

The NHC said the storm is currently formed as a storm. According to reports, Alex is said to be moving west-northwest and could become a hurricane in the next 48 hours. If it does become a hurricane, Mexico and Texas will be affected, without going through the spill site.

Hurricane Alex is shifting away from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, but the storm's outer winds could disrupt oil spill containment and cleanup efforts.

Hurricane Alex can not become a real hurricane until Tuesday. But for now, Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the hurricane season of 2010, seems to be away from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 2010. Fear is that the storm is then to countries in the oil by the oil slick soaked head.

Germany, Argentina advance to WCup q'finals

JOHANNESBURG —A goal that probably shouldn’t have counted and one that definitely should have but was ignored played key roles in Argentina and Germany advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals.

Not that the two soccer powers wouldn’t have moved on, anyway. But what happened Sunday sure didn’t hurt them.

Germany got by England 4-1 in a match affected by a bad officiating decision. Frank Lampard’s long-range shot rebounded off the crossbar and clearly crossed the goal line. Referee Jorge Larrionda waved play on rather than signal the match was tied 2-2.

“It’s incredible," England coach Fabio Capello said. “We played with five referees and they can’t decide if it’s a goal or no goal. The game was … different after this goal. It was the mistake of the linesman and I think the referee because from the bench I saw the ball go over the (line)."

Even Germany coach Joachim Loew conceded it was a fair goal.

“What I saw on the television, this ball was behind the line," Loew said. “It must have been given as goal."

It wasn’t.

Carlos Tevez scored twice, one goal when he was about a yard offside, in Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Mexico in Johannesburg.

Tevez opened the scoring in the 26th minute, heading into an empty net after Lionel Messi chipped the ball toward goal. Mexico players protested furiously as the referee and linesman had a lengthy discussion before allowing the goal to stand.

Mexico’s anger spilled over into a scuffle behind the bench as the teams walked off at halftime, with Argentina coach Diego Maradona in the middle of the scrum.

“It was a difficult blow for us and we never recovered," Mexico’s Rafael Marquez said. “Unfortunately we were unlucky."

While Germany and Argentina were both fortunate, they also were quite good, particularly on offense. They will face off Saturday in Cape Town, a rematch of the 1986 and ’90 finals.

“We know Germany is a different team than the Mexico team we faced today," coach Diego Maradona said. “It’s more powerful, but we’ll have the right players on the pitch to face them."

As England searched for a goal in the second half at Bloemfontein, the Germans put on a display of counterattacking soccer and Thomas Mueller scored twice.

“We clearly controlled the game until England’s goal, then there was a short critical phase," said Loew, who outlined how his German squad attacked the English. “We managed to expose the England defense. We wanted to get into the penalty area quickly and we did it a couple of times extraordinarily."

Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski gave Germany a 2-0 lead before Matthew Upson pulled a goal back for England in the 37th minute. Then came Lampard’s non-goal.

“At 2-1, if Frank’s ball had stayed I think it would have been a nice turning point in the game," England captain Steven Gerrard said.

The defeat immediately raised questions about the future of Capello, whose contract runs to the end of the 2012 European Championship. The Italian said he would soon sit down with Football Association officials to discuss his tenure.

It was the second World Cup running that Argentina beat Mexico in the round of 16.

After Tevez’s contentious opener, Gonzalo Higuain made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute when he capitalized on a blunder by Mexico defender Ricardo Osorio.

Osario played the ball directly into Higuain’s path and he scored his fourth goal of the tournament, tops among all players.

Tevez scored his second and Argentina’s third in the 52nd with a rocket from 25 yards into the top right corner of the net.

Mexico’s Javier Hernandez scored in the 71st.

“Argentina was better throughout the 90 minutes and the truth is we were never in trouble," Maradona said. “We’re not here on vacation, we came here to leave everything so that the Argentines can be proud of us."

All five South American teams are alive, with Argentina and Uruguay already in the quarterfinals.

The clear refereeing mistakes will again raise questions about FIFA’s refusal to allow video replays.

How to Add Google Background Image

How many times you Google daily? If you do it several times a day, then you could feel bored seeing the same old Google logo, a search box and a few links below it. Not any more, since Google now provides the option to have your own background image added to the Google home page.

How to add an image?

Go to Google home page. Do you see ‘Change Background image’ link at the bottom left of your screen? If you don’t see the link or anything except the Google logo and the search box, bring the mouse pointer to somewhere in the white back ground. Now you should most probably have the ‘Change Background image’ link. Click it and you’ll be asked to sign in to your Google account. Sign in with any of your Google (Gmail) account and you’ll be presented with few preloaded images contributed by various users. You also have the option to select an image from your computer. For this, use the ‘From my computer’ option, select an image and upload it.

Now you have your own customized Google home page (like in the image)

Few caveats

The Background image only works if you are signed in to your Google account. If you sign out, you’ll see a different link at the bottom left which now says ‘Sign in to see your background image’. Clear the cookies in your browser and you’ll again see ‘Change background image’ link that you saw at first.

The image will be saved for that Google account which you’ve used to create it. So every time you open the Google home page while signed in, you’ll see the background image set up by you (it takes some time to load though)

To remove the background image or to change it, just sign in to your Google account, visit the Google home page and you’ll have a link at the bottom left that says ‘Remove background image’.

You know what background I currently have?

The default Google logo on a white background. I’d prefer to leave it like that, simple yet elegant.

Google spunk: What they did to search

MANILA, Philippines - Seek and you shall find.

In the tech realm, this is true as well. What we know today as Internet search is really seeking information and finding it in one click, in a matter of seconds.

“What does a perfect search engine look to you these days?” asked Amit Singhal, Google fellow, at the opening of The Science of Search conference in Tokyo recently. “Today, a perfect search engine gives you the information you want right away. You expect that of a search engine and yes, you should.”

In fact, he said, “You should expect even more.”

In the 12 years that Internet users have been typing a query in that classic Google search box, the Internet has become a much bigger, more complicated place.

“We went from a situation where users have no information at all to a situation where users have literally millions and billions of possible pieces of information,” Alan Eustace, Google’s senior vice president for engineering and research, said in his keynote speech.

Now, no question goes unanswered, especially as you can find what you are looking for in seconds.

But search didn’t stop there, it has evolved while the world wasn’t looking or people were just plain busy with their online lives. The sultans of search have been continuously working furiously in their labs redefining the concept of search to include more possibilities for finding information on the Web.

Did you know, for example, that you can search for something on the Web without typing a word in the search box?

Through Google Goggles, one can now use pictures taken with the mobile phone to search the Web and is ideal for things that aren’t easy to describe in words.

What if your query can’t be typed? What if it’s a flower or a building you see in front of you? Google said all you have to do is open the app, snap a picture, and wait for your search results.

Search beyond text

There are thousands of rich information on the Web - images, videos and various other media. Finding these types of information in the global Internet maze is made possible by key technological breakthroughs, disclosed Singhal.

“One of these was to look through the images, analyze the millions of pixels, colors, textures and actually match them at the visual level not just on the textual level,” he said.

“A word is just a few characters, a picture is worth a thousand words and just one image is almost like a million words. What we were able to do is combine some hard technology with search metrics that allows us to match images and build the search engine of today,” he added.

Many queries also can’t be typed. Typing characters is difficult in some Asian languages. Thus, it doesn’t make sense to think of search merely as words typed on a computer screen or a device.

In Asian countries where typing is rather difficult, Google offers “click to search” solutions rather than “type to search” methods. This works via suggesting to users words or phrases used often in searches, highlighting passages to help users input one’s intentions in the search engine.

Voice search is another breakthrough for Google, albeit still in the early stage of development.

“I never thought that voice search was ever going to work,” admitted Eustace. “I supported voice search in my entire career as research director but I never thought that it will reach the point where an untrained user could walk up to a device and input a query and have it correctly find the output and I never thought it could work across languages.”

The power of data, the power of machines, he stressed, was such that scientists have attacked that problem in a way that will soon make it possible to place a phone between you and I. I will type in English, it will translate to your language. You will talk in your language and it will translate in English.

“It’s not a Star Trek fantasy but something that will happen in the next five years. In some ways it is happening now,” he said.

Search beyond language

“Google’s mission is very simple,” Eustace stressed. “It is to organize all the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. “

However, the reality is that much of the information out there is not available in bits.

So Google took the physical world and converted it into bits. Through innovations such as Google Earth and Google Streetview, it is making bits of the physical world where there are none.

By converting all the wonderful information that the world has in books and by understanding the physical world through satellites, Google is making bits of information that are relevant to users such as location.

Before coming to Japan for the search conference, Singhal said he was already able to navigate every corner of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Roppongi Hills using Google Streetview just by sitting in his Mountainview, California office, and so do most Google executives and participants to the conference.

Eustace said it was even easier finding the hotel through his phone’s GPS than talking to a non-English speaking taxi driver.

“When we say we want to organize the world’s information, it is not just the information that you find from the Web but also information that you need every day,” he said.

This include being able to search and read information written in numerous languages of the world.

By combining translation technology with search technology, Google allows users to find websites or documents written in a foreign language and read it in English or vice versa.

If, for example, you are trying to find a noodle house around Roppongi Hills that serves ramen, chances are you wouldn’t be able to find that information in English as most information on ramen would be most likely be found on Japanese websites.

Through Google’s cross-language search, you can now read these Japanese websites in English or in any language of your choice.

It can be anything though from information on bullfighting in Spain to vacation houses in Tuscany to horseback riding tours in Tibet to finding the largest fish market in Hokkaido or the Kimchi Museum in Seoul.

“Imagine if you combine this search technology with the powerful mobile devices of today,” said Singhal. “You are not bound by language, you are not bound by geography and you are not bound by time.”

Search that knows you

“It is my dream,” said Singhal, “as a student of search 20 years ago to build a search engine that is tailor-fit to each individual.

Admittedly, it could make search more relevant though it is a very hard problem.” “Think about it, how many people do you really know out of the six billion people? Very few. And if I ask you to describe each and everyone, you’ll stop after your family and friends,” said Singhal.

But Google somehow found a way. Now, a search query typed in three different countries will yield three different results.

Take tax, for example. If you type tax on the Google search box in Japan, Singhal said it will give you links to, among others, the national tax agency in Japan. The same query in Hong Kong will give you the revenue department of Hong Kong and the same query in New Zealand will give you the revenue department of New Zealand.

“These three users are unique. We have to make search results relevant to where they are. Our job is to return the most locally relevant results,” said Singhal.

Google’s personalization technology is built on the premise that each user is “an individual and special.”

When an Indian like Singhal, for example, types “lords” in the search box, it will most likely return links to cricket.

“Like the billion Indians, I love cricket. When I type ‘lords’ in the search query and I am signed in, it will most likely give me the link to the Lords Cricket Grounds in London,” he said.

“I am individual and I am special. This search engine knows me,” he demonstrated. “If I sign out and I type the same query, it will give me generic search results and it will probably give me a very popular gaming system called ‘Lords’ and still be relevant.”

Another aspect of this personalized search is in the area of social search, which is the biggest thing in the social networking age.

“Last month,” said Singhal, “was my wife’s birthday and I wanted to buy her an iPad. What took the wow out of me was that included in my Google search results were two reviews of the iPad from my social circle.”

“This search engine really knows me, knows what I want,” he said. Although the other results are relevant for the world, the two reviews from his friends are more personalized. “They have something to say about the iPad and I would most likely read what they have to say.”

Search in real-time, search that understands

Information is generated everywhere, round the clock. The power of today’s search engine is in the power to know what is happening now at this very moment.

Now, this could give traditional media a shudder or it can give it more power, depending on what looking glass one is peering into.

“What you are tweeting now as we speak can be found by someone sitting in front of a computer in another part of the world right away,” said Singhal. “One can find the information in seconds or minutes after it was produced.”

Only recently, there was an earthquake in northern California and Singhal said Google Search beat the United States Geological Service (USGS) in reporting the incident by a full eight minutes.

Alongside this capability is the replay feature, which gives users a timeline of what happened in the last few days, the last few hours or the last few minutes.

The dream of every search engineer, however, is a search that understands. As computers do not understand language as humans do, this remains one of the hardest tasks around.

Currently though, Google’s personalization technology is one of the first strides in the attempt to make computers understand.

The holy grail of search, however, according to Singhal, is what do words really mean. How much Google understands language currently define searches.

The word change, for example, can mean many different things. “If your query is ‘how to change screen brightness on your laptop,’ Google understands that you want to ‘adjust’ the brightness of your screen,” he said.

“If your query was ‘how to change foreign currency,’ Google understands that you do not want to ‘adjust’ currency but you want to ‘exchange’ currency,” he explained further.

In the same vein, if your query was “how to change computer memory,” Google understands that you probably want to “install” memory to your computer, and it would tell you that the word memory most probably mean RAM (random access memory).

“Until about 15 years ago, print was still the primary mode of disseminating information,” said Singhal. “Imagine how much this world has changed in the last two decades.”

Clearly a lot of work remains, he said, but it is quite amazing how much progress has been made and how far we’ve come to realizing our tech dreams.

US unveils plan to make online transactions safer

WASHINGTON – In the murky world of the Internet, how do you ever really know who you're talking to, who you're buying from or if your bank can actually tell it's you when you log in to pay a bill?

Amid growing instances of identity theft, bank account breaches and sophisticated Internet scams, the government is looking for ways to make those transactions in cyberspace more secure.

But officials must tread carefully, as efforts to create identity cards, personal certificates or other systems of identifiers raise privacy worries and fears of Big Brother tracking its citizens online.

In a draft plan released Friday, the White House laid out an argument for a yet-undeveloped, voluntary identification system and set up a website to gather input from experts and everyday Internet users on how it should be structured.

The website was already getting votes, snipes and suggestions Friday afternoon — underscoring the incendiary nature of any discussion of Internet regulation or formal structure.

"The technology that has brought many benefits to our society and has empowered us to do so much has also empowered those who are driven to cause harm," said White House cyber coordinator Howard Schmidt in a blog posting Friday outlining the need for better security online.

The plan, he said, envisions a future in which people would be able to get a secure identifier — such as a smart identity card or a digital certificate — from a variety of service providers. Customers could then use the card or identifier to prove who they are as they make their online transactions.

"Digital authentication has been the holy grail of Internet security policy since the early '90s," said James Lewis, cyber security expert and senior fellow at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. This latest effort, he said, has a better chance of succeeding than previous tries, "but we need to see how much opposition it runs into and whether people will actually use it even if it gets deployed."

Ari Schwartz, vice president at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said the unfettered openness of the Internet is what allowed it to grow and prosper but also created security gaps that need to be addressed. But any move to improve identity systems raises many concerns.

"The whole thing is very difficult to do and privacy is one of the more difficult pieces of it," said Schwartz, adding that the system has to balance efforts to maintain privacy while still finding out enough about someone to ensure his identity.

The government, he said, is correct to try to plan ways to move toward better security, rather than letting it just happen with no coordination.

But cyber security experts also argued that the technologies for creating such identifiers already exist and are already used in different ways by businesses, particularly banks.

"The vision they put forth is already realized and commercially available," said Roger Thornton, a cyber security expert and chief technology officer for California-based Fortify Software.

He noted that banks already use sophisticated fingerprinting processes to identify a customer who signs in. The system knows if a customer is using a different computer and will often require additional identification if that computer has not been used for the banking website before.

But many companies don't bother with the more expensive or complex identification systems.

So, said Thornton, "the opportunity is there to make things more interoperable and more uniform."

The draft plan is part of an administration effort to promote cyber security both within the government and among society as a whole. Lawmakers have introduced a number of bills aimed at furthering those goals, and the White House plan was met with initial support from one of the authors of Senate computer security legislation. —AP

Magnitude 6.9 quake hits in Pacific near Solomon Islands

WELLINGTON (AP) - A powerful earthquake has struck underwater off the Solomon Islands. There is no immediate word of damage and no tsunami alert has been issued.

The US Geological Survey
says today's quake had a magnitude of 6.9. It was centered 55 kilometers west-southwest of San Christobal in the Solomon Islands at a depth of 35 kilometers under the ocean's floor.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says it expects no major tsunami threat from the quake.

The Solomon Islands is a country of nearly 1,000 islands that lie on the "Ring of Fire" - an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur.

Saturday eclipse, meteor shower double treat for stargazers

Stargazers will have a double treat of sorts Saturday night as they are likely to see a meteor shower and a partial lunar eclipse.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the eclipse will start at 4:55 p.m. and end at 10:21 p.m.

"Lunar eclipses are safe to watch and observers need not use any kind of protective filters in the eyes. A pair of binocular will help magnify the view and will make the red coloration of the Moon brighter," it said. [See: PAGASA astrodiary]

PAGASA said the eclipse’s magnitude will be 54.2 percent and will also be visible primarily in some parts of America, Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, eastern Asia, and Australasia.

In Manila, the moon will rise at 6:28 p.m. and will set at 5:04 a.m. on June 27.

Penumbral eclipse begins at 4:55 p.m., while the partial eclipse begins at 6:16 p.m. The greatest eclipse will be at 7:38 p.m. Partial eclipse ends 9:00 PM

The penumbral eclipse ends at 10:21 p.m.

On the other hand, PAGASA said recent unseen activity makes the annual June Bootid meteor shower worth observing.

But it said that while the shower is normally active from June 26 to July 2 and peaks June 27, “little or no" activity is expected this year with the full Moon on June 26.

“The radiant is usefully accessible virtually all night, and all observing techniques can be employed," it said.

PAGASA said the shower is derived from the debris ejected by Comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke. The radiant of the shower will originate from the constellation of Bootes, the Herdsman, which lies nearly overhead when darkness falls. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV

Death toll in China flooding climbs to 377

BEIJING — The death toll from storms that have pounded southern China for more than a week has climbed to 377, the government said Friday.

The toll is expected to rise as 142 people are missing and more rain is expected, according to the China Meteorological Administration website. That threatens to hamper rescue efforts that have seen 4.4 million people evacuated from their homes.

The death toll climbed from 211 in the past two days as heavy rains fell in the southern regions of Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangxi, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said on its website.

The government says the flooding has caused about $11 billion in damages.

Workers and soldiers began repairing two breaches along the Fuhe river near Fuzhou city in Jiangxi province on Friday, said a report posted on the Jiangxi Flood Control Headquarters website, days after it overflowed its banks and a dike on another portion of the river burst, forcing the evacuation of 100,000 people.

Thousands of soldiers and workers transported stones and sandbags to block and redirect water, with the goal of patching up the breach within the next week, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Fuzhou to rally rescuers and comfort victims, wearing galoshes and wading through floodwaters in the disaster area, according to footage aired on China Central Television.

Storms have pounded southern China for more than a week, collapsing 368,000 houses, as landslides have cut off transportation and rivers and reservoirs have overflowed.

China sustains major flooding annually along the mighty Yangtze and other major rivers, but this year's floods have been especially heavy, spreading across 10 provinces and regions in the south and along the eastern coast. — AP

Michael Jackson's mother supports fan tribute

NEW YORK – Michael Jackson's mother has given her blessing to a tribute concert that will mark the anniversary of her son's death.

Voice Plate Productions is staging "Forever Michael" fan event Saturday at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., but some have wondered if it was legitimate or done with the family's approval.

In a video posted on YouTube, Katherine Jackson appeared with Joseph Fahmy, the tribute's organizer, to thank him for putting it together.

"I know that Michael would be very honored and very pleased that his fans all over the world are coming together to celebrate his life," she said.

She also thanked people for the support they have given her family since Jackson died June 25, 2009, at age 50.

Fahmy told The Associated Press on Monday that Katherine Jackson "just rescued me" with her show of support.

"There was some negative press, and rumors that it wasn't authorized," Fahmy explained. "But we know it was. ... The Jacksons are so private, and, really, I was going to allow the press to just say what they were going to say, and take the beating from the press, just to give them (the Jacksons) their privacy."

Added Fahmy: "Towards the end here, Mrs. Jackson just said, 'I need to clear the air for you, because you're doing such a wonderful thing.' And she was just one of the sweetest ladies you could ever meet."

Fahmy, CEO of the Los Angeles-based VoicePlate, estimated the event's cost at $250,000. It will include performances by the Chi-Lites and Genevieve Jackson, Michael Jackson's niece and the daughter of Randy Jackson. Tickets start at $150 and go up to $500.

Part of the proceeds from the event will go to the Jackson Family Foundation and to Michael Jackson's favorite charities, according to the organizers. — AP

New iPhone in short supply at Japan launch

TOKYO — Apple's newest iPhone was in short supply just hours after its global launch began in Tokyo on Thursday morning as hundreds queued outside stores across the city to become among the first in the world to own the device.

Over 300 people were lined up at the flagship store of Softbank, Japan's exclusive iPhone carrier, when its doors opened in the hip shopping district of Harajuku. The store ran out of phones by early afternoon, said company spokesman Naoki Nakayama.

"We've been selling out at each launch, it's the same conditions," he said, declining to release any numbers.

Hundreds more lined up across the city at Apple stores and other Softbank outlets across the city. Thursday's global launch of the iPhone 4 was being carried out at 7 a.m. local time in each region, so Japanese were among the first in the world to get their hands on the device. The U.S., France, U.K. and Germany are also part of the global launch.

When the initial version of the iPhone was released in Japan two years ago, some questioned whether it could succeed without many of the advanced hardware features common on Japanese models. But the phone's addictive touch screen and broad selection of downloadable applications have made it a runaway hit in the country.

The newest model is thinner with a better-resolution screen and longer battery life. It features a new operating system that can also be installed on some older models.

Even among Apple's most faithful, some said the phone has become a victim of its own success in Japan.

"As Softbank has cut prices and more and more people signed up, it has made the network much slower," said Motoki Sato, a university student who waited outside of Softbank's store in central Shibuya.

But he still waited through the night before the launch along with dozens of others at the Shibuya store, to get "a birthday present for myself" when he turned 24 on Thursday. He occasionally glanced at his black iPad as he spoke, and said he tried not use his older iPhone too much to conserve battery life through the long wait.

A swarm of pre-orders earlier in the week also led to long lines around Tokyo and overwhelmed computer servers struggling to keep up with demand. — AP

Deal or no deal: Pacquiao insists on 50/50 split

CEBU, Philippines- Unless a 50/50 purse split will be put in place, a Manny Pacquiao superfight against Flloyd Mayweather, Jr. is not going to happen.

This was the hardline stance of Pacquiao himself, saying that there is no way he’s going to climb up the ring against Mayweather if the split on prize money and other revenues is not even or in other way favorable to the unbeaten American warrior.

“Kung 50/50, seguradong madayon ang away (If it’s going to be a 50/50 split, the fight will definitely push through),” said Pacquiao in an exclusive interview with this writer at his suite at Waterfront-Cebu City Hotel and Casino
last Sunday.

Pacquiao and his amiable wife Jinkee were in Cebu during the Father’s Day celebration. It was his first trip to the Queen City of the South since he was elected congressman in the lone district of Saranggani Province.

“Karon wala pay klaro. Dili man siya mosukol (Right now, it’s not yet clear. He’s afraid to fight me),” added Pacquiao, who recently received the “Fighter of the Decade” award from the prestigious Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).

After Pacquiao’s clinical 12-round whipping of Joshua Clottey last March 15 in Texas, Mayweather’s name swiftly cropped up as the next opponent of the Pacman.

Initial negotiations of what could be the biggest bout in boxing history fizzled out after Mayweather batted for an Olympic-style drug testing, which was strongly rejected by Team Pacquiao.

Most recently, Mayweather’s handlers purportedly demanded for a 60/40 purse split, something that Pacman’s camp is frowning at.

“That is too much for Mayweather to ask. Besides, that’s unfair to Pacquiao because he’s the main draw being the current pound-for-pound king,” said Pacquiao’s confidant and top advisor Rex “Wakee” Salud.

But according to certain David in his blog posted on www.usanewsweek.com, the best solution for the megabout to happen is for both fighters to agree on a 50/50 split.

He doubts though if Mayweather will agree to such set-up.

“The best solution would be that the fighters agree a 50/50 split and if they are not willing to reach a common ground then a simple solution would be that the winner of the fight gets 60 and the loser walks home with 40 percent,” said David.

“But it seems unlikely that Mayweather would agree on a 50/50 purse split because he knows that Pacquiao is a tough opponent and he will find it tough to defeat the Filipino star. Mayweather knows that this could be his last mega bout and he wants to earn maximum out of it because if Pacquiao beats him then his next fight on Pay-per-view would not attract much viewers,” the blogger added.

When pressed for her gut feel, Pacquiao’s wife Jinkee said her husband is likely to face next Mayweather because “there’s no viable opponent out there other than Flloyd.” (THE FREEMAN)

FilAm group Legaci rockets to fame with Justin Bieber

Pop sensation Justin Bieber has company on the stages he's been storming. Discovered on YouTube just like the shaggy-haired teen idol was Legaci - a group of four Filipino-American R&B singers who are part of a wave of Pinoy talent cresting in America.

Before making it to Saturday Night Live and Ellen, Legaci could be found auditioning for talent shows everywhere. You name it, they tried it. The late ’90s found the group as part of a larger Filipino R&B boom in Northern California alongside groups like Pinay, DNH and Kai.

They circuited the clubs and college campuses, released two albums and auditioned for television talent competitions with open calls: “American Idol," “The Sing Off," “America’s Got Talent" and MTV’s “Top Pop Group."

Despite their obvious talent, they weren't getting any big breaks. So they turned to YouTube.

Which turned out to be a good thing, because it was through their YouTube video of Bieber's runaway hit "Baby" that they skyrocketed to invisible fame. The video had been posted for just one day when Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, invited Legaci to join them.

A week after the call, Legaci found themselves rehearsing with Bieber in New York and performing live with Bieber on MTV, and on New York's top pop radio station Z100. This time, their talent isn't going unrecognized, despite being overshadowed by Bieber, who is, of course, still in the spotlight. Bieber has adjusted his set to give way for Legaci to perform one of their own songs.

While most of their exposure now is shared with Bieber - many of their Twitter followers and YouTube subscribers are also Bieber fans - Legaci may just be making it big on their own. A record deal with Braun is already in the works.

Asian-Americans are a rarity onstage, but the gates to the mainstream are opening a bit wider as Legaci joins the ranks of Charice Pempengco, the Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger, and Allan Pineda - more popularly known as Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas. —VS/HS, GMANews.TV

Chile beats 10-man Switzerland at World Cup

PORT ELIZABETH (AP) – Chile broke through the formerly impenetrable Swiss defense, and Mark Gonzalez's goal might be enough to get the South Americans into the second round of the World Cup.

Substitute Gonzalez scored on a header in the 75th minute Monday as Chile beat 10-man Switzerland 1-0 to move closer to a spot in the final 16. The Chileans could move on before they take the field again if Spain and Honduras draw Monday night.

Before Chile scored, Switzerland set a World Cup record in the 69th minute by going 551 minutes without allowing a goal, breaking the mark of 550 held by Italy at the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. Chile has won both its games in Group H.

"This is for my family and for all the people who have supported us in Chile," Gonzalez said. "This was a great moment for me and for our team."

Gonzalez headed home a pass from fellow sub Esteban Paredes, who had gotten around the staunch Swiss defense and crossed to Gonzalez at the back post. Gonzalez's downward header beat goalkeeper Diego Benaglio.

"We are in a good position, and we have one more game to prove ourselves even more," Gonzalez said of Friday's match against Spain at Pretoria.

Switzerland played a man down since the 31st minute when midfielder Valone Behrami was sent off with a straight red card for rough play against Arturo Vidal. That ejection irked the Swiss.

"For me, it was just an unbelievable decision," Behrami said. "There was small contact with my hands on his neck, and he went down like (he was hit with) an elbow. Everyone can make a mistake, but this mistake was very, very big for me because it's a dream to play in a World Cup."

Vidal admitted he was surprised by the red card.

"I felt his elbow on my neck," Vidal said. "It was a definite yellow card, but I wasn't expecting a send-off."

The last goal the Swiss allowed came on July 2, 1994 when they were eliminated 3-0 by Spain in the second round. Aitor Begiristain scored from a penalty kick in the 87th minute 16 years ago.

Swiss sub Eren Derdiyok nearly equalized in the 90th minute but drove his shot wide from in front of the net as Switzerland put on late pressure.

Chile had all the first-half pressure even before Behrami's ejection for hitting two Chileans in the face within seconds.

Alexis Sanchez appeared to give Chile the lead in the 49th minute, but was clearly offside. He nearly scored in the 55th minute on a break but was thwarted from the right side by Benaglio.

Chile included striker Humberto Suazo in its starting lineup, while Steven Von Bergen replaced injured defender Philippe Senderos for Switzerland. Senderos, who has an injured his right ankle, will also miss Switzerland's final match.

Suazo was replaced by Jorge Valdivia to start the second half.

"Suazo played the first half-hour where the space was very small and the ball rarely hit the area he was playing, hardly any possibility to move forward," Bielsa said. "It was very difficult for him to lead the attack in this kind of situation."

Chile's Carlos Carmona received one of nine yellow cards handed out by Saudi Arabian referee Khalilk Al Ghamdia. It was Carmona's second of the tournament, and he will miss Chile's match against Spain.

The game started in a sea of red — Chilean and Swiss fans in their predominant colors, and many empty seats, which are mostly red at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Costumes included a woman dressed in a full-length cow outfit and dozens of Chilean flags.

This time it's for real: Charice is joining Glee

After the fiasco last month, Filipino international pop singer Charice Pempengco is officially set to join the Season 2 of the vastly popular American television series, Glee.

On Tuesday, Charice posted on her Twitter account: "It's official. I'm on Glee (next season) but story behind it. When [the] rumor came out, it wasn't true."

The 18-year-old singer was referring to a premature report last month that said she would be joining Glee. Her local manager, Grace Mendoza, had confirmed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Charice would join Glee but the singer and her mother Raquel denied the report.

On Tuesday, Charice said she tried to audition for the show and got accepted following the incident. "And i made it!!! Let's Party!!!!"

Charice did not indicate whether she would be part of the regular cast or would have a guest stint in the next season. Singers Josh Groban and Olivia Newton-John were featured as celebrity guests in the previous season of the hit TV series.

Charice was a runner-up at a singing contest in 2005. Her performances later became YouTube sensations, prompting American television show hosts Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey to notice her.

Her rise to popularity soon followed. In May this year, her self-titled album ranked eighth in the Billboard Top 200.

Charice has been tapped to sing the Philippine national anthem during the inauguration of President-elect Benigno Aquino III on June 30. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV

Flooding death toll rises to 175 in southern China

BEIJING — Widespread flooding in southern China has caused 175 deaths, with 107 more people missing and more storms expected, the government said Monday.

Thousands of houses have been destroyed and economic losses have topped 14 billion yuan ($2.05 billion), according to the Ministry of Water Resources. The toll was up from 132 on Sunday.

Flooding has affected more than 10 million residents since torrential rains began June 13, said a report posted on the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters website. The number included people injured, stranded or who had suffered property damage.

The report called on emergency response teams to step up evacuation efforts of those still stranded in their homes.

More thunderstorms were forecast through Tuesday morning, the China Meteorological Administration said.

China sustains major flooding annually along the mighty Yangtze and other major rivers, but this year's floods have been especially heavy, spreading across nine provinces and regions in the south and along the eastern coast.

The flooding follows the worst drought in a century for the southern provinces and regions of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. It left millions without drinking water and destroyed more than 12 million acres (5 million hectares) of crops. — AP

The world of fashion in movies

By Joy Jonette Chuyaco (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - Fame, glamour, fortune and party, these are just some of the perks that the world of fashion has to offer. It’s quite inviting that’s why many people have tried their luck hoping to walk on the runway or even just to have the opportunity to work for the industry. To have a glimpse of this fabulous world, watch these movies and see what it has to offer.

The Devil Wears Prada. The movie shows that working for a fashion magazine is not as easy as what most people think, especially if your boss is Miranda Priestly. What’s great about it is that it teaches a lot about work ethics, loving one’s job, what enough is and when it’s time to quit.

Head Over Heels. Although the movie focuses on the love story of Jim and Amanda, it gives viewers glimpse of how fashion models live their lives. Actually, there are instances wherein viewers become more interested in seeing the models than the lead characters of the movie.

Sex and the City. While it is true that the movie has nothing to do with the fashion world, it is still worth mentioning because the characters are absolutely fashionable. Most of the time, viewers would look more at what the characters are wearing than listen to what they’re saying.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Another movie that’s not related to fashion but must still be included in the list since the lead character was so fashionably dressed that scenes from the film are widely used for fashion ads purposes. Until now, the film has been making an influence in the fashion industry.

Coco Avant Chanel. Get to know the life of the famous fashion icon, from her childhood, her humble beginnings up to her success in the world of fashion. Well, Coco’s story might just be an inspiration to aspiring fashion designers.

Confessions of a Shopaholic. There is no doubt that fashion and shopping are connected. Some people even get addicted spending for the sake of being in fashion, just like the lead character of the movie. However, life is about to teach her lesson when she accidentally becomes a writer of a financial magazine. Will she advise shoppers not to spend money on fashion?

Eyes of Laura Mars. The 1978 film brought a little darkness to the shimmering world of fashion. It is about a successful fashion and ads photographer, who becomes a suspect for murders she didn’t commit — she sees things. Complicated? Not until one wears the eyes of Laura Mars.

Zoolander. Fashion and comedy in one, the movie is about Derek Zoolander, a top male fashion model who seems not to have the cameras on his side anymore. When what seems to be a good offer comes, he accepts it, only to find out that there is a special mission that goes with it, and it’s way too different from modeling.

13 going on 30. Thirteen-year-old Jenna wanted to jump out of her miserable teenage life, so she made a wish to be “30, flirty and thriving. It instantly came true the next day. At 30, she successfully works for Poise Magazine, her favorite fashion magazine when she was 13. However, challenges are about to come to Jenna’s successful life. Is she ready? Or will she just wish to be 13 again?

Ready to Wear. Designers, models, photographers — name it. All the people that a fashion show needs is in the movie. Watch them as they prepare for the Fashion Week
in Paris. It’s definitely going to be a busy, exciting, daring, stylish and glamorous show. Are you ready? (NOTE: Watch out for the final walk of the show—shocking!)

World Cup: Sneijder scores as Netherlands beats Japan

DURBAN, South Africa — Wesley Sneijder scored the only goal Saturday and the Netherlands beat Japan 1-0 for its second straight World Cup win.

Sneijder's 53rd-minute strike finally broke through a Japanese defense that had stifled Dutch creativity in front of 62,010 fans at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Netherlands again failed to live up to its billing as one of the most fluid attacking teams of the tournament. The Dutch struggled to a 2-0 victory over Denmark in its first Group E match, while Japan had a 1-0 win over Cameroon.

The Dutch will advance to the knockout phase of the tournament if Cameroon and Denmark tie on Sunday.

Striker Robin van Persie missed chances for the Dutch before finally setting up Sneijder's goal. He laid the ball back and the Inter Milan midfielder fired a powerful right-footed shot that goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima could only deflect into his net.

Japan responded going on the attack and Yoshito Okubo had two shots in quick succession, the first saved by Maarten Stekelenburg and the second over the bar.

Substitute Ibrahim Afellay came close to doubling the Dutch lead in the 84th and again in the 88th minute when he twice bore down on the Japan goal, but he was foiled both times by good saves from Kawashima diving at his feet.

Japan nearly made the Netherlands pay for those misses in the final minutes when substitute Shinji Okazaki latched onto a deep cross at the far post but shot just over the bar.

The Netherlands is a two-time WorldCup finalist — losing in 1974 and 1978 — while Japan's best finish was reaching the round of 16 when it co-hosted the tournament with South Korea in 2002.

The win set a new record of 10 straight victories for the Netherlands in WorldCup qualifiers and finals matches — a run that includes eight qualification matches and its two victories in South Africa.

It also extended the Dutch record of never losing to an Asian team. It has now won eight matches and tied one against Asian opponents. - AP

US, SKorea express solidarity over ship sinking

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea and the United States expressed solidarity Thursday over the deadly sinking of a South Korean warship they blame on North Korea, with high-ranking diplomats calling it a "defining moment" for the US-South alliance.

Tension is high on the Korean peninsula with North Korea warning any moves to punish it at the United Nations would mean armed conflict, possibly nuclear war.

South Korea and the US have urged Pyongyang to avoid fresh provocations and vowed to hold the regime accountable for the March sinking that killed 46 South Korean sailors. North Korea vehemently denies any role.

Senior diplomats from the US and South Korea met Thursday in Seoul and expressed their will to keep their alliance strong.

"We are determined to show that our alliance is standing very firmly together during an absolutely critical period," US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell said in opening remarks at a meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan.

Yu replied South Korea is "satisfied with the watertight coordination at various levels."

Ahead of another meeting later, Campbell and South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Chun Yung-woo both called the current situation a "defining moment" for the US-South Korean alliance.

"We will demonstrate to the world how well our alliance works," Chun said.

Backed by the US and other allies, South Korea has taken punitive measures against North Korea, including trade restrictions, after blaming it for torpedoing the warship Cheonan near their disputed sea border on March 26. The North reacted angrily, declaring it was cutting off ties with Seoul and threatening to attack.

South Korea has taken the issue to the UN Security Council, where both sides stated their case Monday over Seoul's request to punish Pyongyang over the sinking.

On Wednesday, North Korea urged the body to impartially handle the sinking, warning ongoing tension over the sinking could trigger nuclear war.

North Korea has threatened to use its atomic arsenal in previous tense moments with the outside world. While the country is believed to have enough weaponized plutonium for at least a half-dozen nuclear weapons, experts doubt it has the means to use a nuclear weapon in battle.

The threat came hours after the country's UN ambassador told reporters at a rare news conference Tuesday in New York that its military will respond if the Security Council questions or condemns the country over the sinking. Sin Son Ho, the envoy, repeated his regime's position that it had nothing to do with the sinking.

The Security Council said in a statement after the Monday presentations it is concerned the sinking could endanger peace on the peninsula, and it urged Seoul and Pyongyang to refrain from any provocative acts.

The two Koreas are still technically at war because their 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The sinking occurred near the disputed western sea border — a scene of three bloody maritime battles. — AP

Lakers edge Celtics in Game 7, win 16th title in dramatic feat

By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer (gmanews.tv)

LOS ANGELES — Purple and gold confetti raining down upon him, Kobe Bryant hopped up on the scorer's table, shook his fists and extended five fingers.

When he hopped down, Boston's legendary Hall of Fame center Bill Russell was waiting to shake his hand.

A Game 7 classic — and this time, it finally went the Lakers' way.

Bryant, the finals MVP, scored 23 points despite 6-of-24 shooting, and the Lakers won their 16th NBA championship Thursday night, dramatically rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Celtics 83-79 in Game 7 of the NBA finals.

Bryant earned his fifth title with the Lakers, who repeated as NBA champions for the first time since winning three straight from 2000-02. Coach Phil Jackson added his 11th, matching Russell's total and possibly putting a cap on his remarkable career if he decides to leave the Lakers.

"This one is by far the sweetest, because it's them," Bryant said after the Lakers beat Boston for the first time in a Game 7. "This was the hardest one by far. I wanted it so bad, and sometimes when you want it so bad, it slips away from you. My guys picked me up."

Ron Artest added 20 points for the Lakers, who didn't exactly show a champion's poise while making just 21 shots in the first three quarters, even hovering around 50 percent at the free throw line.

Yet with Bryant driving the lane to earn eight free throws and Pau Gasol finally coming alive with nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, Los Angeles reclaimed the lead midway through and hung on with a few more big shots from Gasol, who had 18 rebounds, and a remarkable clutch performance by Artest, a first-time champion as the only newcomer to last season's roster.

"Well, first of all I want to thank everybody in my hood," Artest said in an ABC interview right after the game. "I definitely want to thank my doctors ... my psychiatrist, she really helped me relax a lot."

With their fifth title in 11 seasons, the Lakers moved one championship behind Boston's 17 titles for the overall NBA lead. After downplaying the NBA's best rivalry for two weeks, Bryant acknowledged this banner will loom just a little larger than the rest in those Staples Center rafters, given the opponent, the Game 7 stakes and the history they just made. The teams have met in 12 NBA finals, but the Lakers won for just the third time.

Jackson won his fifth ring in Los Angeles to go with his half-dozen from Chicago. And it might be the last: Weary of the regular-season grind and facing a likely pay cut with the Lakers, Jackson hasn't determined his future, though he previously said another title would make him more likely to chase an unprecedented fourth threepeat next season, when he'll be 65.

"I've got to take a deep breath. I've got to take some time to think about this," Jackson said, wearing a satisfied grin underneath his championship hat. "This was great. I'll wait to make that decision in a week."

With his hands already full, maybe Jackson will follow Russell's lead and put that 11th championship ring on a chain around his neck — and Bryant isn't likely to settle for just one handful of rings.

He made that clear to his coach.

"He knows how bad I want him back," Bryant said. "I've been openly blunt about how much I want him back."

Paul Pierce had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Celtics, who just couldn't finish the final quarter of a remarkable playoff run after a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference. Kevin Garnett added 17 points, but Boston flopped in two chances to clinch the series in Los Angeles after winning Game 5 back home.

"Listen, give the Lakers credit," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "They were terrific."

Rivers knows changes are coming, even saying afterward that the '10-11 Celtics will be different than the '09-10 team.

"We were the tightest, most emotional, crazy group I've ever been around in my life," Rivers said, adding that he'll wait a while before deciding on his oft-speculated future.

He called this team "crazy close" and throughout the playoffs, the Celtics only got closer. Down by 14 in their first playoff game against Miami, they won that night and rode that instant burst of confidence not only past the Heat, but through Cleveland and Orlando in the next two rounds.

"We were scratching and clawing, trying to do everything we could to try to pull this out," said Ray Allen, who had 13 points on 3-of-14 shooting. "We had an opportunity to win, but it just didn't go our way down the stretch. I don't think we ran out of steam. Lady Luck just didn't bounce in our corner. ... There were a lot of tears, a lot of tears."

The Celtics were a .500 team for the final two-thirds of the season, prompting many to wonder if they could turn it back on for the playoffs. That question was answered long ago. Yes, they could — and one or two more stops on Thursday, they'd have won an 18th title.

"There's a lot of crying in that locker room," Rivers said. "A lot of people who care. I don't think there was a dry eye. A lot of hugs, a lot of people feeling awful. That's a good thing. Showed a lot of people cared."

The Celtics had never lost a seventh game in the finals. Despite nursing a lead through most of the night while holding the Lakers to ridiculously low shooting percentages until the final minutes, Boston couldn't close it out on the coast, becoming just the seventh team to blow a 3-2 finals lead after winning Game 5.

The Lakers tied it at 61 on Artest's three-point play with 7:29 left, and Bryant's free throws 90 seconds later gave the Lakers their first lead of the second half. The Lakers forged ahead by five points before Bryant and Sasha Vujacic hit free throws in the final seconds to keep Los Angeles ahead by at least two points on every possession.

Bryant said he had to downplay the magnitude of the rivalry during the series, but he came clean on the podium with his daughters, Natalia and Gianna.

"I was just lying to you guys," Bryant said. "When you're in the moment, you have to suppress that ... but you guys know what a student I am of the game. I know every series the Lakers have played in, and I know every Celtics series. I know every statistic. It meant the world to me, but I couldn't focus on that. I had to focus on playing."

Bryant wasn't at his best in Game 7, saying he "was on E ... really, really tired" after 23 playoff games with a litany of injuries. Didn't matter — he still captured the finals MVP award, after averaging 28.6 points in the series.

He's won three straight crowns before, and is already eyeing another three-peat try.

"Let's go for it again," Bryant said, moments before hoisting the finals MVP trophy.

The Lakers will hold a parade Monday, with the team riding floats from Staples Center down Figueroa Street to the USC campus in downtown Los Angeles. A rally at the Coliseum last year attracted 95,000 fans, but the Lakers are skipping the arena in favor of a more interactive celebration, the team said.

Exactly two years to the day after Boston beat the Lakers by 39 points to clinch the 2008 title, Los Angeles got revenge for perhaps the most embarrassing loss of Bryant's career — even if he did little more than grab 15 rebounds for most of the night.

The Celtics had much more poise from the opening tip in Game 7, playing vicious defense that forced Los Angeles to miss 21 of its first 27 shots. Bryant and Gasol were a combined 6 for 26 in the first half.

But forget how it looked early on, because history will. Bryant even did something Jerry West and Magic Johnson never could: He beat the hated Celtics in Game 7 of the finals.

The Lakers are the first team to rally from a 3-2 deficit to win a finals since Houston did it in 1994, beating the New York Knicks. Although Los Angeles stumbled to the brink of elimination for the first time in these playoffs last weekend in Boston, Bryant's teams still are spectacular finishers: They've closed out their playoff opponents on the first try 10 times while winning three straight Western Conference titles over the last three years. - AP
