Film review: Prince of Persia

MANILA, Philippines - Loosely based on a video game, Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a ripping fantasy/adventure yarn (and I do mean Yarn, as the story truly asks that we suspend disbelief, but we don’t mind), that comes to us with producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s signature panache for special effects and larger-than-life scenarios — think the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. And I would venture to guess that the film also signals leading man Jake Gyllenhaal making his claim for superstardom and the boffo talent fees, and not just resting on his laurels of being an actor’s actor, garnered for such films as Brokeback Mountain and Rendition. Sure, the film may have been intended for the teen and young children audience, but one can’t help but appreciate how on the storyline level, there is an attempt to make the film still enjoyable for the more discerning audience — and not just a collage of action sequences and special effects.

Jake Gyllenhaal is Prince Dastan, plucked out of public marketplace anonymity by King Sharaman (Ronald Pickup), and adopted as one of the King’s favorites, along with his two biological sons. There’s an uncle, Nizam (Ben Kingsley), who at the outset, seems to be a benevolent ally to Dastan. When the Persian forces attack the kingdom of Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton), the plot begins to thicken as we’re introduced to a dagger with magical, mystical powers — this is the Sands of Time referred to in the subtitle — and our suspicions regarding the motives for the invasion are raised. Of course, all this is interspersed with fantastic action sequences that include elements of Parkour, transported to a Middle Eastern setting, and various brands of martial arts and swordplay.

This is directed by Mike Newell, and forget his 4 Weddings and a Funeral or Mona Lisa Smile, this is more the Mike Newell of Harry Potter’s Goblet of Fire, with gallows humor and wry asides peppered throughout the high-profiled action scenes. I brought my 10-year-old with me, and Luca enthusiastically gave it his two thumbs up, saying that the story was also very interesting, as he’s into Greek and Roman mythology. Whirling dervishes, bands of assassins, souks and the marketplace, harems and concubines — the culture of the Middle East comes alive in this film, but the scene stealer has to be Alfred Molina as the self-proclaimed Sheik Amar, a low-life who has elevated himself to be ruler of a kingdom that’s a precursor to Las Vegas — and also found in the desert! Molina drives the middle portion of the film with his skewed perspective on life and I was constantly amused by how much of what he said could also be considered contemporary commentary.

At its heart, this is a family film meant to be enjoyed at a superficial level. It’s polished and slick, a true Hollywood product as only Hollywood churns them out. The entertaining quotient is high thanks to the meticulously choreographed action scenes, and the time travel element comes in handy to give it an Indiana Jones, Harry Potter feel. And don’t look now, but the way the film was titled, it stands to gain that this will be the new Bruckheimer franchise, with Disney merchandise to follow.

Atlanta Jazz Festival 2010

This May 29 and 30, 2010 Atlanta Jazz Festival will be held at Piedmont Park. Like most holidays, it has its share of things to do, you can view different products with buyers, let kids burn off energy in the Kid Zone, and pick up some free samples and corporate sellers. On other event on this eve, The Pungo Strawberry festival 2010 is here once again on Saturday 29th May. The venue of this spectacular festival is Virginia Beach. This coastal side is surrounded by many farms. This two day event is expected to hail more than 120,000 visitors this year.

The Festival starts at noon and will run through 11pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and the performers will take to the mainstage at 2pm. This is great Memorial Day tradition in Atlanta and the weather will be sunny and warm.

Coopers Beach is the main beach in Southampton village on Long Island, Southampton back in 1640 was the first settlement in New York State. it has large sand dunes sprouting American beach grass give it a very pretty look and feel. Youngest Everest climber hopes to inspire kids

BEIJING — An eighth-grader from California who became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mt. Everest said Monday he hopes his achievement will encourage young people worldwide to dream big.

"I'm doing this to inspire other kids, hopefully across the world, to get outdoors and to set goals in life. I'm doing this to set an example for them," said 13-year-old Jordan Romero in an interview by satellite phone from the 21,320-foot (6,500-meter) Advanced Base Camp where his team had returned after reaching the top on Saturday.

"The record is one thing but standing on top of the world is just the best feeling you could ever imagine," he said.

On Saturday, Jordan succeeded in scaling the 29,035-foot (8,850-meter) peak, the world's highest, accompanied by a team that included his father, his stepmother and three Sherpa guides.

The climb had its tough moments, the teen said, especially after he developed stomach cramps on the final ascent.

"It was the toughest part of the climb because I was thinking, 'Man, I don't know if I'll make it 'cause this is the worst pain I had ever felt in my stomach. But when we approached the summit, it all just faded away. I just felt happiness," he said.

Before him, the youngest climber to scale Everest had been Temba Tsheri of Nepal, who reached the peak at age 16.

When the group finally reached the top, Jordan recalled touching the colorful prayer flags draped at the peak before standing with his arms outstretched, yelling in exultation.

"I was so happy that all of us as a team, both my parents and all our Sherpas, had made it to the summit," he said. "I was happy about that ... that I had accomplished something so unbelievable. It was a feeling that will definitely be with me for the rest of my life."

His next step was to call his mother, Leigh Anne Drake, who lives in California, with the news.

"The first thing I said was, 'Mom, it's your son calling from the top of the world.' Right away, I heard on the other line just craziness going on," he said.

Jordan's success means he remains just one climb away from his overall quest of reaching the highest peaks on all seven continents. The final peak is the 16,076-foot (4,900-meter) Vinson Massif in Antarctica, which he hopes to tackle at the end of the year.

The curly teenager, from the San Bernardino Mountains ski town of Big Bear, California, said his parents have been supportive of his dream ever since he was inspired at age 9 by a mural in a school hallway that showed the highest mountains on the seven continents.

"That mural just fascinated me so much. My dad picked me up from school and I said, 'Dad, I want to climb the seven summits,' and that was it," Jordan said.

His father, Paul Romero, a helicopter paramedic who is trained in high-altitude rescue, and his stepmother, Karen Lundgren, have trained him for top-level mountaineering. They reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, the first of the seven peaks, when Jordan was 10 years old. — AP

Singapore closes beaches as oil spill spreads

(AP) — Singapore closed beaches along 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) of its east coast as an oil spill from a damaged tanker continued to spread Thursday.

Blotches of rust-colored oil floated next to a breaker wall at a ferry terminal while the nearby National Sailing Center, which usually gives daily classes to hundreds of school students, shut its doors.

A pungent stench has now enveloped the eastern coastline — an area that is normally packed on weekends with families, roller-bladers and cyclists enjoying the sand, sea and some of the island's best seafood restaurants.

"The smell was so bad yesterday, it made me nauseous," said Ho Shufen, a manager at the sailing center. "I don't expect anyone would want to come here until the smell is gone."

About 18,000 barrels of light crude oil spilled from the Malaysian-registered tanker MT Bunga Kelana 3 after it collided with the St. Vincent's and The Grenadines-registered bulk carrier MV Waily early Tuesday in the Singapore Strait about eight miles (13 kilometers) southeast of the city-state's east coast.

The National Environment Agency said it would take the "next few days" to clean up the coastline and advised the public to stay away from affected beaches.

Officials deployed oil dispersants and 3,300 meters (10,800 feet) of containment booms in an unsuccessful bid to keep the slick from fouling the coast.

Officials at the ferry terminal said the oil spill hasn't affected its services.

Lee DeWyze is new 'American Idol'

(Updated 10:58 a.m.) LOS ANGELES – Lee DeWyze, a paint store clerk who overcame his shyness to impress "American Idol" judges and viewers with his spirit and soulful voice, triumphed Wednesday over bluesy musician Crystal Bowersox in the contest's ninth season.

When asked by Ryan Seacrest how he felt, an emotional DeWyze said, "I don't know. It's amazing, thank you, guys, so much ... I love you. Crystal, I love you."

The finalists had closely matched fan bases, with just a 2 percent voting gap between them coming into the finale, Seacrest said. DeWyze's victory was based on votes cast after Tuesday's performance show, which drew more judges' compliments for Bowersox, 24, of Toledo, Ohio, than for DeWyze, also 24, of Mount Prospect, Ill.

The finale made the most of Simon Cowell's last appearance as a judge. A film package recounting highlights from the Cowell years was shown and comedian Dane Cook came on stage to sing "Simon Says," made up of the Brit's barbed comments, and to crack a few jokes.

"You have the honesty of Abe Lincoln and the charm of the guy who shot him," Cook told Cowell, who took the ribbing with a smile.

The walk down memory lane continued with ex-judge Paula Abdul, who often played Cowell's sparring partner during the seasons the shared.

"I've loved all the fun we've had together," Abdul told Cowell. "`American Idol's' not gonna be the same without you. But as only I can you, it will go on."

Cowell, in turn, shed his usual cool in an on-stage appearance.

"I didn't think I was going to be this emotional and I genuinely am. ... Everybody asks who's going to replace me, who going to be the next judge. The truth is," he told the audience, "you guys are the judge of this show and you've done an incredible job over the years."

The finale, as usual, was stuffed with humor, including the return of Larry "Pants on the Ground" Platt and William Hung, return appearances by former contestants and music stars.

Kris Allen, last year's winner, sang "The Truth," with Carrie Underwood, Michael McDonald, Christina Aguilera, Hall & Oates, Robin and Barry Gibb, Janet Jackson and Joe Cocker were among those whose performances were scattered throughout the two-hour show.

Bret Michaels, the ailing former Poison frontman and reality TV star, joined "Idol" finalist Casey James on one of the band's biggest hits, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

The bluesy voiced Bowersox, whose status as a single mom and nurturing of the other contestants had earned her the nickname "Mama Sox," had basked in praise Tuesday.

"You took that song and you absolutely nailed it," Cowell said of Bowersox's rendition of "Black Velvet," a song he said he's normally "allergic" to because it gets murdered.

The assessments of DeWyze were respectful but more measured — with Ellen DeGeneres the exception.

"Lee, I couldn't be prouder if I birthed you myself," she told him after he sang Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer."

DioGuardi admired DeWyze as an "emotionally accessible" singer after he performed R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" as his second number, but Cowell urged him to try harder.

"When you come out for your last performance, I want a 10 out of, because you're capable of that," Cowell told him.

With U2's "Beautiful Day," Jackson welcomed hearing "the guy with the strong big rock voice" and DioGuardi said he had "one of the most commercial voices of the season" and deserved to be in the finale.

Cowell, who had pointed to DeWyze as the frontrunner before the finale performances, said that "American Idol" was designed for someone like DeWyze, who worked in a paint shop when he tried out for the show and needed a break.

DeWyze's first single will be "Beautiful Day," which he performed Tuesday.

Seacrest, who appeared to have an on-air testy relationship with Cowell this season, had only warm words for him Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We really are going to miss you. You are a dear friend and we wouldn't be here without you," Seacrest said.

Cowell isn't going far: He's going to produce and judge "The X Factor," a Fox version of his popular British talent contest. — AP

Wal-mart reduced its price for the iPhone 3GS, in anticipation of a new iPhone that is expected to be announced on June 7. Walmart has rolled back the price by a $100.
The 16GB iPhone 3GS is at $197 on a 2 year service contract with AT&T, so $97 is a considerable savings.

The $97 deal requires a two-year service contract with AT&T and the roll back or price cut seems to be available only int the US.

Slipknot Bassist found dead

Grammy award winning band Slipknot bass player Paul Gray was found dead in his hotel room. His body was found by an employee at the TownePlace Suites in the early hours just before 11 a.m. of Monday, May 24. The sad news has been widely spread. Fans of the band showed great concern about this member of Slipknot. It was confirmed by a spokesperson of Roadrunner Records, Slipknot’s label, at MTV that the 38-year old musician had died but there were no reports yet as to what caused his sudden death.

Police are currently investigating the death, but have said there is no evidence of foul play. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

24 Movie

24 Movie - 24 is going off the air and there are plans to make a movie based on the TV show. Twentieth Century Fox is moving forward with plans and anxious to turn the hit tv series into a possible movie.

Scriptwriter Billy Ray finished the film’s script with the star planning to read it when he returns and the film is trying something completely different from the show by taking out the "real time" aspect.

South African authorities have begun trying to sort out what happened aboard a Greek luxury liner that sank during a weekend storm.


MTS Oceanos was a French built and Greek owned cruise ship. Launched in July 1959 by Forges Chantiers de la Gironde in Bordeaux as the Jean Laborde, it was the last of four sister ships built for Messageries Maritimes. The ships were used on the Marseilles – Madagascar Mauritius service. The Jean Laborde underwent several name changes, including Mykinai, Ancona, and Eastern Princess. In 1976 it was registered in Piraeus, Greece under the name of Oceanos.

Air India Crash

Air India plane which arrived from Dubai crashed when coming in to land at Mangalore airport It happened early morning of May 22, at 6:00am It was carrying 163 passengers and nine crew members when it crashed outside the city of Mangalore. The plane tried to land about 6:00 am Saturday, it exceeds the runway and crashed.

According to reports there are six to seven survivors and they are are currently being treated at local hospitals.

Google TV was Announced

Google TV was announced. Google TV will be available on television sets, Blu-ray players and companion set top boxes through partnerships with Intel Corporation and Sony Corporation. Google introduced at the 2010 Google I/O conference in San Francisco, California a new web based application store for Google Chrome called the Chrome Web Store. The Chrome web store will feature a gallery of applications which can be added to a customized tab. It’s designed with full HTML 5 support, and its meant to make playing games a lot easier and do just about anything else you might want to do, all within Chrome OS. Example, while there was a fun demo of Plants vs. Zombies shown off, another piece of software that was shown off was called Dark Room.

Arab-American crowned 2010 Miss USA

LAS VEGAS — A 24-year-old Arab American from Michigan beat out 50 other women to take the 2010 Miss USA title Sunday night, despite nearly stumbling in her evening gown.

Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., won the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after strutting confidently in an orange and gold bikini, wearing a strapless white gown that resembled a wedding dress and saying health insurance should cover birth control pills.

When asked how she felt about winning the crown, she said, "Ask me after I've had a pizza."

Fakih, a Lebanese immigrant, told pageant organizers her family celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths. She moved to the United States as a baby and was raised in New York, where she attended a Catholic school. Her family moved to Michigan in 2003.

Pageant officials said historical pageant records were not detailed enough to show whether Fakih was the first Arab American, Muslim or immigrant to win the Miss USA title. The pageant started in 1952 as a local bathing suit competition in Long Beach, Calif.

Fakih told reporters she sold her car after graduating college in Michigan to help pay for her run in the Miss Michigan USA pageant.

She said she believed she had the title on Sunday after glancing at pageant owner Donald Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard.

"That's the same look that he gives them when he says, 'You're hired,'" on Trump's reality show "The Apprentice," she said.

"She's a great girl," said Trump, who owns the pageant with NBC in a joint venture.

In a moment that was replayed during the broadcast, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in her gown because of the length of its train. But she made it without a spill and went on to win.

"I did it here, I better not do it at Miss Universe," she said. "Modeling does help, after all."

Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and won a spot representing the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also gets a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary, and various health, professional and beauty services.

During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it's costly.

"I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it's a controlled substance," Fakih said.

Woolard handled the night's toughest question, about Arizona's new immigration law. Woolard said she supports the law, which requires police enforcing another law to verify a person's immigration status if there's "reasonable suspicion" that the person is in the country illegally.

She said she's against illegal immigration but is also against racial profiling.

"I'm a huge believer in states' rights. I think that's what's so wonderful about America," Woolard said. "So I think it's perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law."

"The Office" actor Oscar Nunez was booed as he asked the question and asked the audience to wait until he finished the question before they reacted. The panel of judges came up with the questions themselves.

Miss Virginia USA Samantha Evelyn Casey was the second runner-up, Miss Colorado USA Jessica Hartman was third runner-up, and Miss Maine USA Katherine Ashley Whittier was the fourth runner-up.

Most of the field of contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were eliminated just after the pageant began and the entire group danced onstage to "TiK ToK" by Ke$ha.

A panel of eight judges, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Treasure Island casino-hotel owner Phil Ruffin and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, were judging the girls throughout the night.

After 15 contestants strutted in swimsuits, five were eliminated. Another five were eliminated after the evening gown competition.

Miss Nebraska USA Belinda Renee Wright won the Miss Congeniality award, roughly one week after her father was killed in a farm accident. Miss Alabama USA Audrey Moore won Miss Photogenic after an online fan vote.

A gunman took six girls hostage at a US high school shot one of them- Emily Keyes dead and then killed himself as police attacked the building. Emily Keyes was a student at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado. Last September 27, 2006, a 53-year-old shooter Duane Morrison entered the school and held seven girls hostage and Emily Keyes was one of them. After Duane Morrison entered a classroom, wherever Sandra Smith taught Honors English, he fired his handgun to the air and instructed all the female students to stand facing the blackboard. He then assaulted all of them.

According to police reports, Morrison sexually assault the girls before the release of four of his hostages and held two people, including Keyes. Emily sent her parents a text message ... "I love you" and "love you. C?

Emily got shot and killed by Duane Morrison, when Jefferson County SWAT team raids in the classroom. Morrison spent two girls as human shields, and then, as Emily Keyes tried to run away, he shot her and then killed himself.

Ronnie James Dio died

Heavy Metal Singer Ronnie James Dio died on the morning of May 16, 2010, he died at the age of 67 after a six month battle with stomach cancer.

His death was announced in a statement on his website from wife Wendy Dio

"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. - Sunday, May 16. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

Libyan Plane Crash

Afriqiyah Airbus A330 that crashed while landing at the Airport in Tripoli, Libya, Wednesday May 12, 2010. The plane crash killed 104 people. According to reports there are 93 passengers 11 crews. There are also reports that an eight year old Dutch boy survived the crash and was taken to the hospital without any major injuries. Reporters at the accident scene said that the plane was damaged completely and the plane landed about 100 meters away from the runway.

2010 Oklahoma Tornadoes Kill 5 People

5 people have been confirmed dead due to the destruction caused by an Oklahoma Tornado. The Oklahoma department of Emergency Management has confirmed that 3 people are killed in Tecumseh and two people died in Oklahoma City. Some people suggested that the destruction caused by the tornado was so severe that it tossed vehicles on the highway and ruined houses.

Apart from the five deaths, around 58 are injured as a result of the May 10, 2010, Oklahoma tornado. Around 34 tornadoes were reported in a span of three hours. Power was lost at 37,000 homes in the state due to this bad weather situation in Oklahoma.

The evacuation comes six days after an SUV with explosives was left in Times Square resulting in the arrest of Faisal Shahzad. Faisal Shahzad a U.S. Citizen of Pakistani descent who bought the Nissan Pathfinder SUV bomb that ended in Times Square was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York as he attempted to flee for Dubai. He paid cash on arrival and walked through security without being stopped. By the time Customs and Border Protection officials spotted Shahzad’s name on the passenger list and recognized him as the bombing suspect they were looking for.
