New Starbucks drink has coffee, fruit juice

MANILA, Philippines – Starbucks Coffee Co. on Tuesday announced the availability of handcrafted Starbucks Refreshers in the Philippines, just weeks after the new beverages made their debut in the US and Canada.

In a statement, the coffee giant called Starbucks Refreshers “a global breakthrough beverage innovation that delivers a distinctly new take on thirst-quenching refreshment while providing a natural boost of energy from green coffee extract and real fruit juice.”

“The green coffee extract used in Starbucks Refreshers beverages is made from unroasted 100% arabica beans – resulting in a delicious, low-calorie refreshment with a boost of natural energy from caffeine – tasting nothing like traditional brewed coffee,” Starbucks said.

The beverages, which were launched in the US and Canada on July 10, come in Very Berry Hibiscus and Cool Lime flavors.

“Innovation is at the core of everything we do. As the coffee category continues to evolve, our customers expect more and we are committed to bringing uniquely relevant products to market,” Cliff Burrows, president of Starbucks Americas, said in a statement.

“The introduction of Starbucks Refreshers beverage platform, featuring green coffee extract, is an innovative extension of the coffee market and is the perfect solution for customers looking for a boost of natural energy and thirst-quenching, delicious refreshment,” he said.

The latest innovation follows the successful Starbucks VIA Ready Brew.

Starbucks Refreshers are also available in Brazil, UK/Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Filipino customers immediately welcomed the new drinks.

“It's a tongue twister of a drink but it's worth it,” wrote Bethlynne Ribs Lora on the Facebook page of Starbucks Philippines.

“Really a refresher for our heart and soul,” wrote Caroline Dayap Rita.

“Note to self. Must try before the week ends,” wrote Lea Gabriel.
