Change your car's color with an app: BMW unveils color-changing car

LAS VEGAS - German carmaker BMW has unveiled the world's first "color-changing" car at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The concept car, called the BMW iX Flow, uses electronic ink technology normally found in e-readers to transform the car's exterior into a variety of patterns in gray and white.

"This is really energy efficient colour change using the technology E Ink," said BMW research engineer Stella Clarke. "So we took this material - it's kind of a thick paper - and our challenge was to get this on a 3D object like our cars."

When stimulated by electrical signals controlled by a phone app, the material brings different pigments to the surface, causing the car to take on a different shade or design, such as racing stripes.

In the future, the changes would also be controlled by a button on the car's dashboard or perhaps even by hand gestures, Clarke said.

No energy is needed to maintain the colour the driver selects, according to BMW.

"My favorite use case is the use of colour to influence sunlight reflections," said Clarke. "On a hot, sunny day like today, you could switch the colour white to reflect sunlight. On a cold day, you could switch it black to absorb the heat."

Though the vehicle displayed at CES could only alternate between gray and white, the technology will be expanded to cover a spectrum of colour, according to BMW. (Reporting by Omar Younis; Editing by Karishma Singh and Gerry Doyle)

China's passenger car sales fall 80 percent in Feb on coronavirus

BEIJING - Passenger car retail sales in China, the world's biggest auto market, fell 80 percent in February because of the coronavirus epidemic, one of the country's industry associations said on Wednesday.

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said in a statement that China's overall passenger car sales dropped 80 percent, without giving a full sales figure for the month.

"Dealers returned to work gradually in the first three weeks of February and their showroom traffic is very low," CPCA said, adding it expects February's sales drop will be the steepest of this year.

Japanese automaker Toyota, the first major global automaker to report its February sales in China, said it sold 23,800 Toyota and premium Lexus cars last month, down by 70 percent from a year earlier.

The world's biggest car market is bracing for further bad news as efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which has killed more than 2,900 people in mainland China, disrupt global supply chains and dampens consumer demand.

Toyota rival General Motors, China's second biggest foreign automaker, said the industry will face "serious challenges" in the first quarter this year, but anticipates the situation will ease in the second quarter, its China president Matt Tsien said in a post on GM's official WeChat account.

GM hopes China's auto sales will report year-on-year growth in the second half of this year, Tsien added.

‘First’ Porsche model fails to sell in bungled auction

As the curtains parted, the frenzied car aficionados raced to get out their smartphones to capture the moment for posterity. Several of them cheered.

They had come to see Lot No. 362, the much-heralded Porsche Type 64, a swooping Nazi-era car that was built by automaker Ferdinand Porsche 9 years before he founded his car company.

The bidding on the avant-garde coupe, referred to by some car collectors as the “first” Porsche, had been expected to open at $13 million during an RM Sotheby’s Auction on Saturday night in Monterey, California. But something went awry, and the bidding started much higher than planned.

“When they mentioned 30 million to start, I thought that’s quite a strong starting price,” David Lee, a car collector and businessman from the Los Angeles area who was in the audience, said in an interview Sunday. The auctioneer had an accent, he said, “and didn’t say the teens well. Is he really saying 30 or 13?”

It was not entirely clear if the auctioneer’s accent, an error on the display screen or some combination of the two caused the confusion. The bidders were supposed to be bidding in increments of $1 million or less, but the screen showed them bidding in increments of $10 million.

In the frenzy, the high bid of $30 million zoomed up to $40 million. Then it hit $50 million and $60 million, before landing at $70 million. That would have been substantially higher than the record $48.4 million a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO fetched last year at another Sotheby’s auction.

That’s when the auctioneer abruptly declared that the high bid was actually $17 million, not $70 million.

What should have been the high point of the Monterey Car Week devolved into chaos, with car buffs gasping and groaning over the blunder. The one-of-a-kind Porsche, built for an unrealized road race on Germany’s new autobahn, through the Austrian Alps to Rome, failed to sell, and the auction was halted.

“As bidding opened on the Type 64, increments were mistakenly displayed on the screen, causing unfortunate confusion in the room,” RM Sotheby’s said in a statement Sunday. “We take pride in conducting our world-class auctions with integrity, and we take our responsibility to our clients very seriously.”

It did not name the auctioneer.

On Friday night, a $19.8 million sale of a McLaren F1 LM-Specification went off without a hitch. The auction house, which made news last year when a painting by British street artist Banksy sold for $1.4 million and then self-destructed, sought to tamp down any conjecture that this had been a publicity stunt.

“This was in no way intentional on behalf of anyone at RM Sotheby’s, rather an unfortunate misunderstanding amplified by excitement in the room,” the auction house said.

Bidders were required to register for the auction and were given numbered paddles, according to people in the audience. Although the classic rally car received a high bid of $17 million, RM Sotheby’s said that did not meet the “reserve,” which is a minimum price set by the seller.

John Bothwell, director of Pur Sang, an international automotive manufacturer, said in a phone interview Monday that the car world is still buzzing after the episode

“Conspiracy theories are abounding,” said Bothwell, who attended the auction. “It was a screw-up and, chiefly, it let the air out of the balloon when it went from $70 million to $17 million,” Bothwell said.

Bothwell said the auction company has a strong track record in the car auction world.

“I don’t really go along with the attitude that they should be booed,” he said. “Everybody has off-days.”

Just 3 of the Porsche-designed Type 64s were planned for production and only one remains. The car’s modified, air-cooled Volkswagen four-cylinder engine puts out about 32 horsepower and can reach a top speed of about 88 mph.

The car was supposed to be part of a propaganda campaign, marking the Nazis’ 1938 alliance with Italy and the absorption of Austria. Porsche also designed the KdF-Wagen, commissioned by Hitler as the people’s car, which became famous after the war as the Volkswagen Beetle.

Chris Harris of the British series “Top Gear” fawned over the Porsche Type 64 during a recent test drive.

“This is like breaking into a safe somewhere in America,” he said. “Someone finds an old safe in a building, and you crack it open and you find a little book that says ‘This is the recipe for Coca-Cola.’ ” That what this is in a car.”

An Instagram video of the auction posted by Lee, the collector, received more than 212,000 views as of Sunday night.

Lee said he had difficulty understanding the Sotheby’s auctioneer all weekend.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. “It’s really an amazing situation that we witnessed.”

RM Sotheby’s was still advertising the car on its auction website. Sotheby’s acquired an ownership interest in RM Auctions, which specializes in vintage cars, in early 2015.

“We will continue making every effort to sell the car,” the auction house said.

Lee did not come away from the Monterey auctions empty-handed.

“I’m more of a Ferrari collector,” said Lee, who posted the winning bid on a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS auctioned by Gooding & Company.

He declined to say how much the winning bid was.

Beyond the car: how tech firms are exploring the future of transport

LAS VEGAS - Carless commuting is cruising in the fast lane at the Consumer Electronics Show, with companies showing off electric bicycles, scooters, skateboards and more aimed at making the internal combustion engine a thing of the past.

As the ranks of people around the world living in cities has grown, so too has the cost of car ownership as well as traffic congestion.

Nowhere was this more apparent than at the annual tech gathering in Las Vegas where some 170,000 conference goers jammed the streets.

"In a lot of big cities, cars aren't tenable anymore," said tech analyst Jack Gold of J. Gold Associates.

An AFP reporter testing the car-free concept through the week at CES by relying on a freshly released GenZe electric bicycle consistently sailed past clogged traffic near the convention center and on the famed Las Vegas Strip.

Riders too tired or lazy to pedal meanwhile can twist a throttle to glide along at close to local street speed limits.

GenZe spokesman Tom Valasek, a former auto industry marketing executive, said that several car makers had come to check out the company's CES exhibit.

"There is a lot of curiosity right now about where things are heading," Valasek told AFP.

"I know a lot of people in the auto industry who are quite worried that car ownership is going away."

DRIVERLESS CARS

The popularity of smartphone-summoned rides from services such as Uber and Lyft are playing into the trend, with technology giants investing heavily in self-driving capabilities that could soon see automated vehicles available on-demand.

"We believe car ownership makes no sense in the future," Lyft chief executive John Zimmer said at a CES dinner event.

Zimmer doubted that his daughter, now a young child, will want to own a car when she is of age. Instead, he said: "She'll want access to transportation."

A boom of autonomous cars would likely prompt vehicles to evolve to be more akin to rooms on wheels: sleeper cabins in trains, or private offices, Zimmer added.

A shift away from owning and relying on cars was also expected to result in traffic and parking becoming less of a priority in urban design.

GenZe, a US-based division of the Mahindra Group in India, this week announced its e-bikes will be added in April to a Ford GoBike ride-share program in San Francisco.

The e-bikes should "help to make San Francisco more livable and reduce congestion," Metropolitan Transportation Commission deputy executive Alix Bockelman said in a release.

Leading online social network Facebook has a fleet of 100 GenZe bikes for employees to get around its Silicon Valley campus, and they are also used by delivery services DoorDash and Postmates, according to Valasek.

SCOOT, SKATE, RIDE

Despite negative publicity about hoverboards a few years ago -- centered on their tendency to explode -- the manufacturer Swagtron was at CES with some of those devices along with skateboards and bicycles boosted with electric motors.

"We are seeing with personal mobility that some people like to skate; some people like to scoot, and some people like to ride," Swagtron chief operating officer Andrew Koven told AFP.

Koven saw alternatives to cars as an "absolute necessity" that was part of a "systemic shift" toward getting around in ways that are economical as well as socially and environmentally responsible.

"If I am commuting a short distance to work, do I really need a car?" analyst Gold asked rhetorically.

Cities are already eyeing autonomous shuttle services.

A self-driving electric shuttle built by Navya was introduced here last year in a test that segued into a program providing rides on a route in downtown Las Vegas.

Swiss-based Rinspeed also showed its autonomous shuttle, and Toyota introduced a boxy concept vehicle which could be used for ridesharing, deliveries, medical services or as an extension of retail stores.

Plenty of new cars were shown at CES including a number of self-driving models. But some attendees said that the vehicle of the future may be something different.

Automakers "have been building cars from the driver's perspective," said Ankit Jain, head of the Ola Play software platform for the India-based rideshare group.

In future vehicles which may be autonomous, "the passenger is the one paying," Jain said. "You have to fundamentally rethink the car."

SpaceX's Elon Musk to launch his own car into deep space

MIAMI - SpaceX confirmed Wednesday its CEO Elon Musk plans to blast his cherry red electric car off toward the Red Planet when the company's Falcon Heavy rocket launches for the first time next month.

Many wondered if Musk was joking last week when he tweeted his plans for the Falcon Heavy's inaugural payload to be his "midnight cherry Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity," the classic song by the late David Bowie.

"Destination is Mars orbit. Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn't blow up on ascent," the famed space enthusiast and Internet tycoon said on Twitter on Friday.

But SpaceX confirmed to AFP on Wednesday that the plan is for real.

Touted as the "world's most powerful rocket," the Falcon Heavy is designed to one day carry crew and supplies to deep space destinations such as the Moon and Mars.

It can propel 119,000 pounds (54 metric tons) -- or the same as a fully loaded Boeing 737 jet -- into orbit, twice the load of the Delta IV Heavy, currently the biggest rocket in operation.

The Saturn V moon rocket, which last flew in 1973, was more powerful.

There were also two bigger rockets during the Soviet era -- the N1 which was the most powerful first stage ever built, though it failed to launch successfully; and Energia which only launched twice.

The Falcon Heavy is essentially three of the California-based company's Falcon 9 rockets put together, with 27 Merlin engines instead of nine.

SpaceX says it will cost a third of what it costs to launch the Delta IV.

A date has not yet been set for the Falcon Heavy launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, which has been delayed several times -- but SpaceX says it should happen in January 2018.

According to astronomer and blogger Phil Plait, who was able to reach Musk for more details about the plan, the car won't be sent into orbit around Mars, but will enter "an orbit around the Sun that takes it as close to the Sun as Earth and as far out as Mars."

Other items may be added to the payload as well.

"Just bear in mind that there is a good chance this monster rocket blows up, so I wouldn't put anything of irreplaceable sentimental value on it," Musk was quoted as saying.

Hyundai launches new Genesis sports sedan in SUV-driven market

SEOUL - South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co will launch its first new sedan under the premium Genesis marque in Seoul on Friday, hoping to cement the brand's place in the luxury segment and make up for its lack of a strong SUV line-up.

US pop singer Gwen Stefani will perform for about 10,000 people at a gala event to launch of the G70, the third sedan to carry the Genesis name but the first to be marketed exclusively under Hyundai Motor's fledgling premium brand.

Starting from $33,000, the sporty four-door offers bang for the buck as it takes on rivals including affiliate Kia Motor's Stinger sedan and BMW's 3 series.

But analysts say the G70 will not solve Hyundai's troubles in the United States, where sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are all the rage and the two previous Genesis-branded sedans failed to take off.

"Look at Cadillac, with just one crossover, the brand is struggling in the US. It will be much the same story for Genesis until they can get a crossover to market," said Dave Sullivan, product analysis manager at US consultancy AutoPacific.

"It's not because the G70 will be a bad product ... The sedan lineup just doesn't match consumer demand."

The G70 debuts in South Korea on Friday followed by the United States next year. Hyundai has not said when it would enter China and Europe, which are dominated by German premium brands.

Hyundai's China sales tumbled more than 60 percent in the second quarter due to its lack of a strong SUV line-up and political tensions between China and South Korea over North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

In the United States, SUVs made up 35 percent of Hyundai's total US sales from January to August this year, far lower than the industry's 62 percent, according to US researcher Autodata.

CRITICAL TEST

The Genesis project is being closely watched by Hyundai Vice Chairman and heir apparent Chung Eui-sun, as he prepares to take over the world's No.5 auto group from his father, 79-year-old Chairman Chung Mong-koo.

As the first Genesis model which was not previously sold as a Hyundai, the G70 will be a key test of the two-year-old marque's ability to survive in a fiercely competitive field.

Its chief rival will be Hyundai affiliate Kia's slightly cheaper Stinger, which shares the same platform as the G70 and launched in late April. Other rivals include BMW's 3 series, Audi's A4 and Mercedes-Benz's C-class.

Hyundai has said the Genesis line-up will grow to six by 2020, with the addition of a sports coupe and two SUVs.

Hyundai, Kia aim to grow 2017 sales to 8.25 million vehicles globally

SEOUL - Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Motors said on Monday they aim to increase their combined sales to 8.25 million vehicles globally in 2017, despite rising competition.

The 2017 target is slightly higher than their 2016 goal of 8.13 million vehicles. The South Korean automakers' final sales figures for 2016 are due out later on Monday, with analysts expecting a miss due to weak demand in emerging markets.

"The 2017 goal is slightly higher than my projection," said Ko Tae-bong, an auto analyst at Hi Investment & Securities, adding that the performance of new models would be the key to success after some disappointments in recent years.

With emerging markets such as Russia stabilizing, and with Hyundai and Kia Motors gearing up to boost vehicle supply to the United States and China, sales could get a lift this year.

But Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors - which together rank fifth in global sales - plan to add capacity in China and Mexico this year, just as those markets and the United States are seen slowing, likely pressuring margins.

"With the global economy continuing its low growth, trade protectionism spreading and competition intensifying in the automobile industry, uncertainty is growing more than ever," Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo said in his New Year message to employees.

Hyundai Motor likely clocked its fourth straight annual profit decline last year, hurt by its higher exposure to weak emerging markets, and a product line-up that features more sedans than sport utility vehicles, just as SUVs have become more popular across many global markets.

Hyundai Motor is targeting 2017 global sales of 5.08 million vehicles, while Kia Motors set its goal at 3.17 million vehicles.

Kia Motors Vice Chairman Hank Lee told employees on Monday that the automaker hoped to revive growth this year, after falling short of its 2016 sales target.

Hyundai Motor shares were flat in a wider market .KS11 that was down 0.4 percent in early morning trade, while Kia Motors shares were down 0.3 percent

Hyundai Motor shares fell for a third straight year in 2016, down 2 percent versus the wider market's 3 percent gain. Kia Motors shares slumped 25 percent last year, making them the worst-performing stock among major car makers in the world.

Apple reveals autonomous vehicle ambitions

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple has revealed it is investing heavily in autonomous vehicles in a letter asking the government to make it easier to develop self-driving cars.

The company is "excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation," Apple said in a November 22 letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offering Apple's opinion about draft regulations for the sector.

"Apple looks forward to collaborating with NHTSA and other stakeholders so that the significant societal benefits of automated vehicles can be realized safely, responsibly, and expeditiously," the company's director of product integrity Steve Kenner wrote.

Apple issued the letter because it is "investing heavily in machine learning and autonomous systems," an Apple spokesman said in an email to AFP.

"There are many potential applications for these technologies, including the future of transportation, so we want to work with NHTSA to help define the best practices for the industry."

Rumors about Apple's ambitions in the sector have circulated for years.

The company has a separate organization called "Project Titan" that is developing automotive projects.

Although Apple has never officially confirmed the project, several of CEO Tim Cook's comments have fueled speculation.

After a $1 billion investment in a Chinese ride-hailing service called Didi Chuxing, he spoke of "some strategic things that the companies can do together over time."

However, in early September, The New York Times reported that the group had narrowed its ambitions, laying off dozens of staff as part of the project's "reboot."

Instead of designing and producing a complete self-driving car, the group will now concentrate on developing underlying technologies for autonomous vehicles.

In its letter, Apple urges the NHTSA not to penalize new participants in the sector by restricting the testing of cars under development on public roads, for which established automakers generally have exemptions.

"To maximize the safety benefits of automated vehicles, encourage innovation, and promote fair competition, established manufacturers and new entrants should be treated equally," it says.

Apple also encourages data sharing, particularly for accidents, saying that would enable the industry to "build a more comprehensive dataset than any one company could create alone."

Most major auto manufacturers and many technology groups are currently developing autonomous vehicles, considered to be the future of the automobile, along with electric power, with first production models promised for around 2020.

Upgrading your car when you have a growing family

Remember when you were young and single, when you had money to spare and could have almost anything you wanted? Those were great days, but are usually just a memory when you have a family. Often, the first thing to go is your sporty car because the fact is that you need to upgrade your car when you have a growing family.

Why upgrade?

There are several reasons why you may need to upgrade your car when your family gets bigger. The first is down to space. A sporty two-seater car does not have the room in the back for the safety seats that all children need when being driven in the car, and it does not it have sufficient trunk space.

A family car is also fitted with plenty of safety features. These can include features that help you to avoid accidents, such as proximity sensors, advanced braking systems, electronic stability controls, and lane-keeping support. Some cars also feature alerts, such as a collision warning system and drowsiness alert. Then there are the features that come into play once an accident has happened. These include airbags, which are often located not just in the front now, but also at the side and at knee height.

The first step to acquiring a decent family car is to consider your family’s needs. For example, how big is it likely to get? How much trunk space is required? How economic are the models on your shortlist in terms of mileage? What features come as standard? Once you have whittled down your choices in this way, you need to find out where you can buy such a car.

You could opt to buy from a private seller, but it may be more financially attractive to check out local dealers who may offer a better deal by taking your old car in part exchange. A dealer may also be able to offer you an attractive payment plan, allowing you to spread the cost of the car out over a few years. If not, however, you may want to consider other ways of spreading the cost, such as taking out a car loan with a company such as Auto Loan Solutions. If you buy a brand new car, or even one that is only six months old, it is likely that you will need to make a down payment to secure it. You will also need to find the money to pay for the insurance.

With an official dealer, you may also be able to negotiate the inclusion of extras in your deal. This may be something minor such as free car mats, but it could also be a favorable upgrade in terms of features. Some car manufacturers are also designing child seats to fit exactly into their models, so it is worth checking these out.

When you have a family, your priorities change. Protect your family when driving by investing in a car that works to keep them safe and yet still has all the features that you as an adult require.

Carmakers target digital-savvy, eco-conscious drivers

TOKYO -- Toyota's three-seater exoskeleton car and an electric vehicle with touch screens that turn it into a "digital space" are among the concept models that will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show this week.

The biennial event will also focus on self-driving cars and the latest environmental technology as firms look to tap growing demand for green vehicles, seen as the next evolution in the global automotive industry.

"This year, autonomous driving will be a big trend, with the Japanese automakers really showing what they are trying to do and trying to show that they can match, if not do better, than what Silicon Valley is up to," said Hans Greimel, Asia editor for the Automotive News.

The show's 44th edition, which kicks off Wednesday and runs until November 8, will feature 160 exhibitors including global auto giants and parts suppliers from a dozen countries.

It starts a week after Honda said it would put a commercialized self-driving car on the road by 2020, challenging rivals Toyota and Nissan, which are also betting on the future of vehicles that can drive and, in some case, park themselves.

Google has been testing self-driving cars in Silicon Valley, as have US-based Tesla and General Motors, while Nissan has vowed to put an experimental automated car on Japan's highways as soon as 2016.

At the show, Nissan, a leader in electric vehicles (EV), will show off an EV concept car without knobs and buttons, replaced by tablet-style touch screens featuring controls and maps on a white instrument panel.

Music, videogames and movies can also be played on the screens.

"The car becomes a digital space when it's parked," said Nissan product planning general manager Hidemi Sasaki. "You can use it as a gaming room, movie theater... or you can chat online with your friends."

Toyota's Kikai vehicle conjures images of the Terminator films with some of a usually hidden underbelly -- including fuel tank and hoses -- exposed, giving an inside look at the car's machinery.

The automaker said its concept car shows off "the fundamental appeal of machines: their fine craftsmanship, their beauty, simplicity, and their fascinating motion."

Fuel-cell future

Toyota and Honda will also exhibit their latest fuel-cell offerings, after Toyota last year started selling the world's first mass market fuel-cell car in Japan.

Toyota is hoping to sell tens of thousands of the four-door Mirai -- which is powered by hydrogen and emits nothing but water vapor from its tailpipe -- over the next decade, as it looks to stop producing fossil-fuel based cars altogether by 2050.

Honda's rival fuel-cell features a cruising range of more than 700 kilometers, and generates electricity that could help supply power to a local community in an emergency situation, it said.

Toyota's FCV Plus similarly functions as a power source for homes and communities as the auto giant aims to turn fuel cell vehicles from "eco-cars into energy-cars," it said.

The firm's hybrid gasoline-electric offerings, including the Prius, have sold more than eight million units since their launch in 1997.

But a limited driving range and lack of refuelling stations have hampered development of fuel-cell and all-electric cars, which environmentalists say could play a vital role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and slowing global warming.

Again this year, most US-based automakers, which have not attended the Tokyo Motor Show since before the global financial crisis, are staying away, a reflection of their puny presence in the Japanese market.

Foreign carmakers have long complained that they were effectively shut out of Japan through tariffs and other barriers, although luxury brands tend to enjoy success in the world's number three auto market after China and the United States.

Among the overseas automakers attending are BMW, Peugeot Citroen, Porsche, Jaguar and crisis-hit Volkswagen, which is embroiled in one of the biggest scandals in the history of the automobile sector.

The German auto giant has admitted it had fitted 11 million of its vehicles with software designed to cheat official checks.

LOOK: Floyd buys $4.8-M 'hyper car'

American boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather flaunted his immense wealth anew, this time posting a picture of his newest car on Instagram.

Mayweather, who earned over $200 million for his "Fight of the Century" against Manny Pacquiao last May, revealed on social media that he purchased a Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita for $4.8 million.

"Koenigsegg is an ultra boutique automobile manufacturer for the super rich. Koenigsegg made only two Trevitas for the world, and this is no. 2 of 2," Mayweather said in the caption.

"In addition, it is the only USA spec Trevita built in the world… The word Trevita means '3 whites.' It is beyond a super car and is classified as a hyper car," he added.

According to the Koenigsegg website, the Trevita uses "white carbon fibre that shines like millions of diamonds when the sun hits the car… it's a stunning visual effect and one that Koenigsegg is unlikely to ever produce again."

Mayweather, the highest paid athlete in the world, is known as much for his lavish lifestyle as for his tremendous fighting skills. He recently sold his Ferrari Enzo for $3.8 million before purchasing the Koenigsegg, and regularly shows off his collection of shoes, watches, and vehicles on Instagram.

New cars at New York International Auto Show

NEW YORK CITY - The latest and hottest rides on the planet were unveiled at the ongoing 2015 New York International Auto Show.

The Cadillac CT6 is packed with progressive technology such as surround video capabilities and night vission.

"The first ever CT6, It is prestige American luxury personified," Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen sad.

Lincoln debuted a futuristic Continental concept car, while BMW revealed a luxury sports car made of aluminum and carbon fiber that costs about $120,000 at least.

The New York Auto Show is also about fuel efficiency, smaller and lighter vehicles with better aerodynamics, and the future of electrified cars.

Fuel prices may have gone down, but consumers in the US are still looking for vehicles with better gas mileage.

The Chevy Volt 2.0 provides an electric range of 50 miles and a total driving distance of over 400 miles.

"It's electric, it's fun to drive, it's got enough range, that you're probably gonna be electric pretty much all the time," Pam Fletcher, General Motors' executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles, said.

But when it comes to the long-term future of the auto industry, GM's head of consumer affairs says that going electric is not enough -- the next generation of electrified cars are cars that generate their own electricity using hydrogen.

Fuel cell concept cars like Toyota's Mirai and Honda's FCX are leading the auto industry as zero emissions electric vehicles of the future.

"The reason it's not here today, two things, generating or creating the pure hydrogen in order to pump it to the tank is still a pretty costly and somewhat dirty process, so that's a problem," James Bell, head of consumer affairs at GM, said.

Bell says Toyota's fuel cell cars will be available in the market later this year.

The 2015 New York International Auto Show is open to the public until April 12.

CEBU - Bar examinations fifth placer Michelle Liao is set to get a brand new car from her school, the University of Cebu.

A white Toyota Vios was seen at the quadrangle of the university, ready to be turned over to Liao, who garnered a Bar score of 84.50%.

The University of Cebu had promised Bar takers that whoever gets to be included in the top 10 will receive a brand new car.

Atty. Valdemero Estenzo, dean of the College of Law, said 13 out of their 22 Bar takers last year passed.

Estenzo said after it was announced that Liao placed fifth on the Bar, several law firms and private companies called the university asking for Liao to work for them.

Liao is planning to take a vacation first before deciding on her career.

Last year, sixth placer Manuel Sarausad also received a brand new Toyota from the University of Cebu.

"We really want them to do well. The car is our way of encouraging them to excel," Candice Gotianuy, chancellor of the university, had said.

Why rich Koreans are shunning BMWs for Maseratis

SEOUL - Flashy Maseratis and Bentleys are fast becoming the cars of choice for young, monied South Koreans, eclipsing German luxury brands now so commonplace that some in Seoul's upscale Gangnam district jokingly refer to a BMW 5-series as a Hyundai Sonata.

Driving the sales of six-figure plus cars is a growing acceptance of conspicuous consumption in the conservative home of Hyundai Motor Co, where more younger, affluent Koreans are turning their backs on their parents' frugal ways.

"While our parents saved a lot in the past, younger people nowadays spend on things they can enjoy," said chef-restauranteur Song Ji-hoon, who last year sold his Mercedes-Benz CLS to buy a Maserati Ghibli.

"The street is now flooded with German cars. My car is not something one can see often," Song, 34, told Reuters.

Last year, the Seoul dealership of Volkswagen unit Bentley Motors was the top global seller of Flying Spur sedans, which start at just under quarter of a million dollars. The outlet, in Gangnam, ranked second in overall sales behind one in Dubai.

South Korea is also the seventh-largest market for Fiat Chrysler's Maserati, which saw sales increase five-fold last year to a record 723 cars after the brand introduced its Ghibli sports sedan, which starts at around $90,000.

"Korean consumers now want to flaunt themselves," said Kevin Kang, chief operating officer of the joint dealership for British luxury brands Aston Martin and McLaren Automotive which will open in the first half of this year in Gangnam.

"There lingers antipathy towards the wealthy, but at the same time there is aspiration to be wealthy," he said.

Imported luxury vehicles were relatively scarce in South Korea before a trade deal which took effect in 2011 unleashed an influx of high-end mainstream German cars from the likes of BMW , Audi AG, and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz.

While South Korea is the 11th largest car market, it ranks in the top four for certain top-end models such as Audi's A8 and the Mercedes-Benz S Class line, according to the companies.

Sales of imported vehicles priced above 100 million won ($91,100) grew by a third in 2014 from a year earlier to 14,975, the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association says, a figure that excludes Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferarri, which are not association members.

Sales of foreign brands priced 150 million won ($136,339) and above nearly doubled last year, as more wealthy drivers sought "ultra-premium" cars to flaunt their status, a trend mocked and celebrated in Psy's 2012 hit song "Gangnam Style".

"There is a strong me-too-ism in Korea. People follow what other people are buying," said Andy Bae, senior analyst at automotive research firm IHS, which expects South Korea's ultra-luxury car market to grow 45 percent by 2017.

South Korea's overall car market grew 8 percent last year.

The number of South Koreans with assets exceeding 1 billion won doubled to about 167,000 in 2013 from five years earlier, according to KB Research. This rising wealth, coupled with younger peoples' desire to stand out in a traditionally conformist society, is encouraging luxury automakers.

Koreans are also marrying later and often rely on parents for housing, leaving many with the means to splash out on flashy purchases.

"As consumers get younger, they are less shy about something that stands out," said Kim Eui-young, a sales manager at the Maserati dealership in Gangnam, which opened in 2007.

Some ultra-luxury cars owners, however, prefer discretion.

A businessman in his 40s, who did not want to be identified, said he bought a blue Ferrari 355 Spider to enjoy on weekends. He also owns a Porsche and a Maserati, but drives a Hyundai SUV to work every day. "People are looking at my cars," he said. "But my employees do not know."

BMW says talks with Apple don't involve developing a car

FRANKFURT - German carmaker BMW said on Thursday its talks with technology giant Apple did not involve developing or building a car, denying a German magazine report.

Auto Motor und Sport said in its March 4 edition that the two firms were discussing possibilities for cooperating on the development of a passenger car.

Apple was impressed with BMW's carbon-fiber electric cars, the magazine said, citing a "high ranking BMW manager."

The BMW spokesman said: "We are in regular talks with companies from the IT and telecommunications sector, including Apple, concerning topics like connected vehicles. Developing or building a car is not a topic of these discussions."

An Apple spokesman said the company did not comment on rumor or speculation.

Auto Motor und Sport said Apple cars could be sold in Apple stores and serviced at BMW dealerships.

Among the issues that needed to be resolved was whether BMW would allow Apple to develop an operating system for its i3 model, a step that would require BMW to reveal details of its own vehicle software to the technology giant, the magazine said.

Last month, a source told Reuters that Apple was looking beyond mobile devices to learn how to make a self-driving electric car, and was talking to experts at carmakers and automotive suppliers.

Rolls-Royce to launch its first SUV

LONDON - German-owned luxury carmaker Rolls-Royce on Wednesday unveiled plans to launch its own sports utility vehicle, mirroring recent moves by fellow upmarket rivals Bentley and Jaguar.

The British brand, which is owned by Germany's BMW, revealed in an open letter from Rolls-Royce chairman Peter Schwarzenbauer and chief executive Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes that it was in the process of developing its first-ever 4x4 car.

"Today we confirm that we are developing an all-new Rolls-Royce with exceptional presence, elegance and purpose ... A car that offers the luxury of a Rolls-Royce in a vehicle that can cross any terrain," the letter read.

The automaker added that the new model would be "a high-bodied car, with an all-new aluminium architecture", but gave no indication of price or when production would begin.

Car of the future emerges at Las Vegas electronics show

LAS VEGAS -- It has four wheels, is always connected and the driver is optional: the car of the future is starting to take shape from collaboration between automakers and their technology partners.

At this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a new breed of cars with nearly complete autonomy and elaborate gadgetry has provided a peek into transportation solutions in the coming years.

One of the most ambitious of the prototypes on display comes from German auto giant Daimler, which rolled its electric-powered Mercedes-Benz F015 through the streets of Las Vegas without a driver to show how four occupants can converse face-to-face while leaving the driving to an on-board computer.

The interactivity extends beyond the vehicle itself: the car can project a virtual crosswalk to assist pedestrians in its path.

"Obviously we talked about autonomous cars before. We have shown that we can do it and we dominate the technology" Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche said in an interview with AFP.

"But now this is more than technology. We want to show where mobility goes all together and the two most important things that we're giving people back: space and time. So they can focus on whatever they want to do, working, relaxing, video conferencing, sleeping."

Moving beyond fear

The auto and technology firms at the Las Vegas show have been demonstrating what is possible even if it's not clear whether the public is ready.

While Google is working on a fully autonomous car, other automakers are taking a more gradual approach, focusing on things such as self-parking and crash avoidance technology.

"We have what we know can be done technically and what the public is ready to accept," said Guillaume Devauchelle, vice president for research at French auto equipment firm Valeo.

The notion of a fully autonomous car is "scary," Devauchelle says. "What we are trying to do is build confidence in functions which are simple and less expensive."

Valeo demonstrated some of this by taking journalists on a ride through Las Vegas in a Volkswagen Passat equipped with its Cruise4U technology, which allows a driver to use an autopilot mode for steering, accelerating and braking, as well as to avoid collisions.

Valeo sees systems like these coming into service by 2017, but Devauchelle said it may take several generations of vehicles before we see automation in more complex driving situations.

Audi, meanwhile, used its prototype to navigate 900 kilometers from northern California to Las Vegas.

Daniel Lipinski, project leader for highway pilot at Audi of America, also cautions about moving too fast on the technology.

Even with autonomous vehicles, he said, "there will be some sort of supervision to make sure the driver is able to take over."

Ford, meanwhile, is promoting "semi-autonomous" cars with assistance on certain functions.

"We're already manufacturing and selling semi-autonomous vehicles that use software and sensors to steer into both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, adjust speed based on traffic flow or apply the brakes in an emergency," said Raj Nair, Ford chief technical officer.

Connecting to Web, wearables

Another key theme is the connected car. Some are connecting not only to smartphones, tablets and the Internet but to wearables such as smartwatches.

South Korea's Hyundai introduced an Android Wear watch that connects to its Blue Link system to start or stop the engine, lock or unlock the doors and the driver can say "find my car" to locate the vehicle in a parking lot.

And BMW showed a system to use a television to lock one's car doors.

Zetsche said these innovations are examples of small steps being taken and that "fully autonomous will be in the next decade."

General Motors issues 3 new recalls

NEW YORK - General Motors Co began the new year by announcing three new vehicle recalls on Thursday, as the ignition switch crisis continued to dog the automaker after millions of vehicles were recalled in 2014.

No crashes or injuries were reported in the latest round of recalls involving 83,572 sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks. GM expects that fewer than 500 will be affected by the defect, an ignition lock actuator with an outer diameter that exceeds specifications.

Still, the issue could spook consumers and investors. Ignition system problems were behind the record number of recalls made in 2014 by GM, which has struggled to rebuild its reputation following its 2009 bankruptcy.

The recalls hit GM's share price, which fell 14.6 percent during 2014, a year in which shares of rival Ford Motor Co F.N rose about 0.5 percent.

GM recalled more than 2.5 million vehicles in 2014 after accidents that caused more than 40 deaths. The compensation program, which is accepting claims until Jan. 31, has received more than 2,200 claims for injuries and deaths as a result of the issue.

In the primary recall announced on Thursday, the outsized ignition lock actuator can lead to the ignition key getting stuck in the "start" position. If the vehicle is driven that way and experiences a "significant jarring event," the ignition lock cylinder could move into the "accessory" position, affecting engine power, power steering and power braking.

"Also, the timing of the key movement into the accessory position relative to crash sensing could result in the air bags not deploying in certain crashes," company spokesperson Alan Alder said in a statement.

The latest issue was discovered in an internal review following warranty party returns, GM said, and covers certain Chevrolet Silverado light-duty and heavy-duty pickups, as well as Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban; GMC Sierra light duty and heavy-duty pickups, and Yukon and Yukon XL; Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT. It concerns models from 2011 and 2012, and 2007-2014 vehicles that have been repaired with defective parts.

Another of the announced recalls concerns a faulty hose clamp in 56 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks from the 2015 model year.

The third covers 152 of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC 1500 pickup trucks over concerns the rear axle shaft could fracture while the vehicles were being driven.
