Jessica Sanchez sings anthems in Pacquiao-Rios bout

MANILA, Philippines – Jessica Sanchez sang the Philippine and the US national anthems ahead of the Manny Pacquiao-Brandon Rios fight on Sunday at the Venetian Hotel, Cotai Arena in Macau.

Sanchez, who is half-Filipino and half-Mexican but was born and raised in the United States, sang “Lupang Hinirang” and "The Star Spangled Banner" a capella before a huge crowd of boxing fans from around the world who came to watch the fight.

Sanchez was wearing a long printed gown.

Pacquiao personally chose Sanchez to sing the national anthems.

In a rare kind of invitation, Pacquiao took to Twitter last Tuesday to ask Sanchez if she will “do me the honor of singing the national anthems before our fight?”

Sanchez later replied: “Yes! I’m honored!”

In an interview with ABS-CBN News last week, Sanchez said she feels honored to be singing the Philippine national anthem in Pacquiao’s fight.

“My grandma helped me with the pronunciation. I’ve been trying to listen to different versions and I’m going to keep it as traditional as possible,” she said.

This is not the first time for Sanchez to sing ahead of a Pacquiao match.

Sanchez, the runner-up in the 2012 edition of "American Idol," sang the American national anthem during Pacquiao’s June 2012 fight against Timothy Bradley Jr., which the Pacman lost.

Jessica won't be JLo's front act in PH

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-Mexican-American singer Jessica Sanchez denied rumors that she will be Jennifer Lopez’s front act when the former “American Idol” judge holds her concert in the Philippines.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Sanchez said there’s totally no truth to that report.

“That’s just a rumor,” she said.

Lopez is set to hold a concert at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on November 26.

Meanwhile, Sanchez said she would love to have her own solo concert here in the country when she comes back next year.

“Maybe next time, maybe next year. That would be fun,” she said.

Sanchez will be leaving for Los Angeles this week to continue working on her album which will be released by the end of year.

Endorsing Jollibee

Meanwhile, Sanchez said she is delighted to be part of another brand that is known to all Filipinos around the world.

“Amazing. It’s been an amazing experience for me, to be able to come here. This is the first time to go out of the States and it’s the Philippines and I’m endorsing a Filipino stuff. This is one of the biggest Filipino brands so I’m definitely excited to be part of the Jollibee family,” she said.

Sanchez said she is glad to endorse something that she is really familiar with even when she is back in the United States.

“We’ve been there a couple of times. We had a lot of Chickenjoy and spaghetti there so I’m very familiar with Jollibee,” she said.

The 17-year-old singer said it is nice to know that she is sharing the same values as that of the food chain’s campaign.

“I feel so blessed and so lucky to be a part of such a big company, a big brand name. This brand is so family oriented, my family is so family oriented. It means a lot to me to share that kind of love between me and my endorsements,” she explained. - from a report by Ginger Conejero, ABS-CBN News
