Why you should check for colon cancer

MANILA -- Colon cancer is fourth among the top causes of cancer-related deaths in the world and the rate is going up even in the Philippines, according to Dr. Juliet Gopez-Cervantes.

In dzMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Gopez-Cervantes, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist, explained that colon cancer is a cancer in any part of the 1.5 meter-long large intestine that processes waste that goes out through the rectum.

"Kapag namamaga ang colon o 'yung large intestine, nagkakaroon ng diarrhea kasi 'di naaabsorb ang water."

Colon cancer has four stages:

Stage 1

- The tumor is localized and is only on the surface of the colon. It is usually found as incidental finding when a CT scan or colonoscopy is administered to the patient.

Stage 2

- The tumor goes deeper into the colon and invades lower layers of the large intestine.

Stage 3

- Lymph nodes (kulani) will be present.

Stage 4

- The tumor reaches other organs such as the liver, kidney, and bones.

The bad news is that the symptoms of colon cancer will only be noticeable once the tumor has already advanced.

"Kung ang tumor o ang cancer ay nasa left side ng colon, 'yung few centimeters magmula sa anal opening... nagkakaroon ng manifestation ng pagbara ng daanan ng dumi kaya lumiliit ang dumi."

There will be instances when the patient will experience alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation, blood stains on their stool, or loss of appetite that could lead to weight loss.

If the tumor is in the right side, one of its manifestation is anemia.

Unlike the tumor in the left side of the colon, bleeding won't be noticeable for those who has it on the right side.

Patients with ages 50 to 65 years old may experience weight loss and anemia might be showing signs of colon cancer.

Colon cancer is seldom painful unless it is already in an advanced stage.

"Seldom magbibigay ng pain unless bumara na ang isang tumor kunwari sa left side, lumaki na to the point na halos 'di na makalabas ang dumi, lalaki ang intestine to the point na lalaki ang tiyan, magbibigay ng abdominal pain, vomiting, at kadalasan walang lumalabas na hangin o dumi man."

However, there is good news: colon cancer can be treated early and prevented.

Gopez-Cervantes said the tumor starts as a polyp (tissue) in the large intestine which can evolve and develop into colon cancer.

If it is immediately seen by the doctor, it can be removed to prevent it from growing.

"Kung nakita siya during colonoscopy which is the direct visualization of the inside of the colon, 'pag nakitang may polyp o lamang tumutubo, kayang-kayang tanggalin right there and then lalo na kung 'di gaanong kalakihan and that will save the patient from colon cancer."

She reminded everyone to get checked, especially those who already reached 50 years old because 20 to 30 percent of their population produce polyps which can lead to cancer in five to 10 years.

People who have a family history of colon cancer or those who have immediate family members who had polyps removed from their colon should undergo screening when they reach 40 to 45 years old.

Cardiac arrest or heart attack: Know the difference

MANILA - Many get confused with cardiac arrest and heart attack, with most thinking that the two are just the same condition.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. John David Tan, a cardiologist, explained that cardiac arrest is often an effect of a heart attack.

"By the name itself (cardiac arrest), hindi na po tumitibok ang puso. Either the heart does not pump anymore, because of that, hindi na po efficient ang daloy ng dugo sa utak. That's why yung pinaka-common manifestation of sudden cardiac death is loss of consciousness, nawawalan ng malay po ang tao," he said.

"The most common cause of sudden cardiac death is heart attack. I think that was the case nung nangyari kay Direk Wenn (Deramas), sudden cardiac death due to massive heart attack," Tan added.

Heart attack is often caused by a blockage in the veins, making it difficult for blood to circulate the body.

For Tan, it is important for a heart attack patient to undergo cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as soon as possible.

"Kapag hindi na-CPR within a minute, there is a higher chance of dying every minute," he added.

Upon diagnosis of the cause of the heart attack, a person may undergo emergency angioplasty to remove the blockage.

"Binubuka po 'yung 100 percent blockage na nag-cause ng heart attack," Tan said.

Aside from giving of first aid, patients should also be aware of symptoms of heart attack, which includes chest pains, difficulty in breathing, and breaking into a cold sweat.

Deramas passed away Monday of cardiac arrest due to a heart attack.

Deramas was in a hospital to see his sister who also earlier succumbed to a heart attack.

Processed meats can cause cancer, but...

MANILA - A recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed bacon and othe processed meats can cause cancer, but an oncologist said there is no reason to panic.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Mark Kho, a surgical oncologist from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), said cancer is caused by several factors, and eating processed meats and red meats only increases the risk of developing the illness.

"Multifactorial ang cancer, ibig sabihin, maraming pwedeng mag-cause. You also look at the magnitude, gaano kalaki bang problema 'to. For example, ang sinasabi kasi, processed meats, red meats can increase 'yung risk mo for development ng colorectal cancer ng 18%. Kung titingnan mo, parang ang laki ano, 18% increase," Kho said.

"Kung ang average man, for example, in the US, ang lifetime risk niya for colorectal cancer is 5%, in-increase mo 'yan by 18%, magiging 6%. Kung nilagay mong ganun, 6% lang pala ang lifetime risk, whereas for women, ang breast cancer, 12% ang risk," he added.

Instead of avoiding red meat and processed meat all together, Kho said it is better to eat everything in moderation.

"The idea siguro is moderation pa rin. Huwag naman siguro masyadong ma-praning, huwag ding abusuhin," Kho said.

Nitrates, which are used to preserve food, is a known carcinogen. The addition of nitrates to meats makes processed meats dangerous to one's health.

The recent study by WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) put processed meats in the same category as tobacco and asbestos.

Eating 50 grams of processed meat daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent, IARC said. - with a report from Reuters

How to keep your hair healthy

MANILA -- Frequent styling and treatments can damage your hair. Here are some tips to take care of your crowning glory.

According to Dr. Michelle Manuel, a dermatologist, having healthy hair means keeping the scalp healthy.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Manuel compared the scalp to soil, noting that the plant's growth is directly related to the quality of the soil.

She also shared some tips on how to take care of one's hair.

* Do not abuse hair treatments (i.e. rebonding, perming)

According to Manuel, frequent hair treatments like rebonding, perming and coloring can cause severe damage to the hair.

"'Yung mga cosmetic that we put on our hair, nakaka-dry din kasi nasi-strip off 'yung oil," she said, adding that chemicals often used in salons can sometimes be too strong for the hair and scalp.

"Ang hair natin can take a lot of abuse. Medyo matibay ang buhok. Kaya lang, kung every day mo inaabuso, rurupok at rurupok din siya."

* Do not use shampoo every day

Shampooing can strip the scalp and the hair of natural oils.

"Ang advice is not to wash your hair every day. Ang pagsa-shampoo, every other day, that is, kung hindi naman masyado ikaw nasa labas nagta-trabaho, mga field work, hindi naman masyadong nadudumihan buhok mo, okay lang na every other day mo i-wash," Manuel said.

* Do not apply conditioner on the scalp

According to Manuel, applying hair conditioner on the scalp can cause hair fall.

"Don't condition every day and don't condition up to the roots because that will soften the roots and it will make the hair fall."

She also advised using conditioner only on the tips of the hair.

* Consult specialists before using any medicine for the scalp.

Different people have different hair and scalp quality, and using medicines may do more harm than good.

Manuel advised those who are interested in using medicines on their scalp to consult a doctor or hair specialist first before doing so.

How to know if you're bipolar

MANILA -- Just like other psychological disorders, being bipolar is often mistaken for either depression or mood swings.

In an interview on "Magandang Gabi Dok" on DZMM, Dr. Bernadette Manalo-Arcenas said bipolar disorder is a disorder wherein the patient suffers extreme changes in moods.

"'Pag sinabi mong bipolar, ups and downs extremes, para siyang South and North Pole apart," she added.

Symptoms of this disorder include being in a hyperexcited state, speaking rapidly, being argumentative, lack of goal-directed activity, lack of concentration, and extreme mood changes.

Bipolar disorder can be detected during late adolescence or early adulthood, when the person starts to discover the world and experience problems.

According to Arcenas, a person with bipolar disorder changes moods within minutes, unlike those people who are just plain moody.

"Minsan sa gabi hindi sila nakakatulog. They feel na parang hindi kailangang matulog. Madami silang gustong gawin pero hindi natatapos... They're very much interested sa mga pleasurable activities," she added.

Those with bipolar disorder also tend to do a lot of things at the same time.

"At times they would have a lot of relationships all at the same time or they would go shopping one to sawa or minsan makikita mo na parang ang dami nilang ginagawa tapos they would be frustrated kasi hindi naman natatapos," Arcenas said.

Studies show that bipolar disorder can be genetic. For Arcenas, bipolar disorder is also a biological problem involving the levels of dopamine and serotonin in a person's brain, causing the changes in moods.

Bipolar disorder can be treated through medication and therapy.

"Nagagamot naman siya sa pagbigay ng mga antipsychotic medications at nagbibigay tayo ng mood stabilizer," Arcenas said.

Bipolar disorder may only need three to six months of treatment. Those in the acute stage, on the other hand, may need at least two years of treatment.

Those with more severe symptoms might need to take medicines and undergo therapy for a longer time.

For Arcenas, hyperactivity connected with bipolar disorder is different from hyperactivity caused by ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

"Magka-link sila at usually ito 'yung nagiging problem sa diagnosis kasi hyper din 'pag ADHD ang pasyente so kailangan talaga ma-tease out ano ba ang mas mataas, ang mood problems or 'yung attention kasi magkaiba 'yun," she said.

Bipolar disorder can also be linked to depression, which is a state of prolonged sadness and lack of motivation.

While depression and bipolar disorder may share symptoms, Arcenas clarified that suffering from depression is only one part of being bipolar as they tend to go from depressed to hyper in a short time.

Arcenas explained that those suffering from bipolar disorder or other mood disorders should not hesitate from talking to a psychiatrist.

She also advised patients not to stop from taking medicine unless instructed by their doctors.

People who have relatives and family members suffering from bipolar disorder should also be more patient and understanding.

"They have the right to be treated. Marami naman tayong ospital all over the country na makatutulong. Seek help para magamot ang pasyente. Hindi sila magagamot sa pagkadena lang. Kailangan talaga silang ayusin, gamutin and they will live a better life," Arcenas said.

How acupuncture helps heal the body

MANILA -- Acupuncture is one of complementary medical practices used to cure certain illnesses.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok" with Nina Corpus, Dr. Jake Aniban, an acupuncturist, explained the principle behind acupunture.

"Ang acupuncture ay isang paraan ng panggagamot. Sa paraang ito, naglalagay po tayo ng karayom sa katawan upang mabalanse ang enerhiya o ang chi, sa Chinese," he said.

He also explained that in Chinese medical practice, having an illness or a disease is caused by an imbalance in the body's energy levels or chi.

"Sa Chinese medicine po, ang pagkakaroon ng sakit ay dahil sa imbalance, o hindi pagkakabalanse ng chi," Aniban said.

Using this principle, the body is divided into different meridians that are connected to the different organs of the body.

"Ang katawan ay composed ng meridians. Ang kamay nakakonekta sa kamay, sa paa, sa binti. May mga connections ang ulo na nakakonekta sa kamay," Aniban said.

"Kapag nasa taas ang organs, nasa taas ang meridians, kapag nasa baba ang organs, nasa baba ang meridians," he added.

Most aches and pains can be cured by acupuncture. It can also be used in different stages of cancer, in combination in other forms of treatment.

"Lalo na po 'yung nagsusuffer ng side effects ng chemotherapy, nakakatulong ang acupuncture," Aniban said.

Aniban gave examples of common diseases that can be cured by acupuncture, based on the organs that are affected.

"Ang mga sakit tulad ng allergic rhinitis, ubo ng ubo, sakit ng lung organ 'yan. So ang gagawin ng acupuncture, papalakasin ang lung organ."

Another such illness is osteoarthritis, which is caused by the weakening of the kidney.

"Ang osteoarthritis po ang pagtanda ng mga buto. Sa Chinese medicine, ito po ang pagtanda ng kidney," Aniban said.

Acupuncture can also be cheaper than other forms of treatment, at P1,500 to P2,500 per session. According to Aniban, he recommends patients to undergo at least 10 sessions in order to balance the body's energy.

Disease or syndrome: Know the difference

MANILA -- A syndrome is different from a disease, and it usually affects more than just one body part.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Joseph Lee, a urologist and surgeon, explained that unlike diseases, syndromes do not usually get treated.

"Ang syndrome kasi, ang classical, sabihin natin, manifestations and symptoms. Ganun naman, lahat naman ng sakit meron tayong any substance or medications na pwedeng gamutin ano, from medications, marami tayo," Lee said.

He added that medications are used merely to manage the symptoms of syndromes.

The causes of most syndromes are usually unknown.

"That's why it is a syndrome. It's never a disease because you are not specific, hindi tayo specific on that point," Lee said.

Diseases, on the other hand, can be treated, with its cause known.

An example of a syndrome is Parkinson's Disease. Although it is called a disease, doctors consider it as a syndrome, since it affects a person's motor system.

Also known as hypokinetic-rigid syndrome, Parkinson's disease is caused by the build up of lewy bodies, abnormal aggregates of protein, inside the nerve cells and the midbrain, or the substancia nigra.

The substancia nigra is a part of the brain that plays an important role in reward, addiction, and movement

Symptoms of Parkinson's include tremors and rigidity. Patients also tend to have what is called the Parkinsonian gait.

Patients also have difficulties in speaking, finding it difficult to move muscles in the mouth.

"Nagsasalita siya pero medyo may kabagalan o hindi mo na naiintindihan ang lenggwahe na lumalabas sa kanyang bibig," Lee said.

Among celebrities suffering from Parkinson's are Michael J. Fox, Muhammad Ali and Freddie Roach.

The exact cause of Parkinson's is unknown, but is connected to different factors such as genetics, exposure to pesticides and toxins, and in case of boxers, head injury.

How to choose the right sunblock

MANILA -- Choosing the right kind of sunblock for your skin is important to maximize its benefits.

In choosing a sunblock, most people think that picking one with the highest sun protection factor (SPF) is the best.

"Usually the SPF we recommend is not lower than (SPF) 15. The higher you go, it doesn’t really mean na pantay 'yun sa proteksyon mo. SPF 15 gives you around 93%, and sa mga studies 50% gives you 95% protection, 2% lang ang itinataas," explained Dr. Cynthia Tan, a dermatologist in an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok".

Most products available in the market have SPF that ranges from 15 to 50.

Aside from choosing the right SPF, one should also choose a product that is right for the skin type.

Tan said a sunblock lotion is perfect for use all over the body. However, a sunblock gel is better for those with oily skin, especially if they want to use the product on their face, while those with dry skin should opt for sunblock creams.

To maximize the effect of sunblock, it should be reapplied every two to two-and-a-half hours, especially when swimming.

Physical, chemical blocks

Tan also explained that different sunblock products can either function as a physical block, or as a chemical block.

"Ang sunblocks kasi pwedeng chemical block siya. Ang chemical block, they use the chemicals. Ang chemicals ang naga-absorb nung rays. Ang physical kasi, parang tinakpan mo siya ng opaque material para mag-reflect na lang 'yung light, hindi siya maabsorb," she added.

Sunblocks with zinc oxide and titanium oxides function as physical blocks.

For Tan, sunblocks that function as physical blocks are better than chemical blocks, since some chemicals cause allergies.

What lack of sleep does to the immune system

MANILA -- Aside from having an effect on a person's mental, emotional and physical well-being, not having enough sleep can also wreak havoc on one's immunity.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Joseph Lee, a surgeon, explained that sleep helps regenerate the structures needed by the body to defend itself.

"Kapag tulog tayo, 'yung immune system natin doon nag-change, parang changing of arms. Ibig sabihin, nagbabago sila. So ngayon, switching sila, ano 'yung namatay, ano 'yung dinedefendan natin na hindi nakayanan, papalitan natin," he said.

However, due to lack of sleep, it becomes more difficult for the body to regenerate what it needs.

"Kung puyat ka pa, maaring hindi mo matugunan 'yung antibodies natin... mababa ang proseso. Everything will be slowed down. May chemical processes din sa katawan na hindi matutugunan ang pagdepensa sa atin," Lee added.

A weaker immune system may lead to illnesses and other conditions.

"Ang ating katawan ay merong mga biological structure... this is our cells, mga defense mechanism natin na nagtutulong sa pagsugpo ng ating mga kalaban, mga antibodies natin," Lee explained, adding that some of these structures only function when needed.

Aside from having enough sleep to help boost the immune system, Lee also recommends taking food supplements, like acai berry, to boost the immune system.

How heat can cause varicose veins

MANILA -- Spending time in the sauna or soaking your feet in a tub of warm water after jogging or working out in the gym can cause varicose veins, a dermatologist warned.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Gwen Wong, a dermatologist, explained that heat can cause veins to bulge and become visible on the surface of the skin.

"I think the heat, it's contributing to 'yung lumalabas ang ugat," she said.

Although the condition may be temporary, repeated exposure to heat may cause the condition to be permanent.

"Pwedeng temporary, pero kapag paulit-ulit, gym tapos sauna tapos gym, maaring maging permanent," Wong said.

Varicose veins and spider veins are caused by poor blood circulation.

"Pag ang blood nagfo-flow, let's say sa lower legs, hindi na nakakabalik dahil dun sa ating mga valves eh depektibo na, especially pagka medyo nagkakaedad na tayo. At minsan eh hormonal, or minsan nga, tama 'yun, dahil sa pagiging obese ng isang tao o mabigat ang timbang, hindi na po nakakabalik [ang dugo] ng maayos sa puso," Wong explained.

People who spend many hours standing or sitting can also suffer from varicose veins.

"Depende po ito sa lifestyle, kung ano 'yung trabahong ginagawa. Halimbawa, buong araw nakatayo, o buong araw nakaupo, kailangan meron din tayong ginagawang mga ehersisyo," Wong added.

One can prevent varicose veins from developing on the legs by raising it above the heart while resting at home.

"Kailangan ini-li-lift po 'yung legs above the heart. Hindi po effective yung inilalagay lang sa silya," Wong said.

Although varicose veins can be treated through sclerotherapy, severe cases of varicose and spider veins may require surgery.

Why taking painkillers for gout is dangerous

MANILA -- It is common for people suffering from gout to resort to painkillers to get rid of the excruciating pain caused by inflamed joints.

However, a rheumatologist warned against taking painkillers frequently, as this can lead to more serious problems.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Julie Li-Yu, a rheumatologist, explained that most painkillers, if abused, can lead to complications and other medical conditions not related to gout.

"Kadalasan, dahil sa sobrang kampante ng ilang mga pasyenteng gumagamit ng mga gamot, paulit-ulit nilang ginagamit na walang konsultasyong. Nasisira na ang bato, nabubutas ang sikmura, nagkakaroon ng bleeding, bleeding ulcer, kidney failure, liver problems... depende sa profile ng pasyente," Li-Yu said.

Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid production. The excess uric acid is then deposited in the joints, usually in the feet.

The pain and inflammation is the body's reaction to the excess uric acid in the joints, which it considers as a foreign body.

According to Li-Yu, advised patients to always consult their doctors before taking medicines, since specialists prescribe medicines depending on the patient's profile and medical history.

She also noted that the number of younger people suffering from gout is increasing, which the doctor attributed to poor lifestyle choices.

"What we see nowadays, ang iniisip kasi natin ay contribution ng maraming factors. Pwede 'yang kontribusyon ng lifestyle, pwede 'yan ang No. 1, dahil iba na ang diet ng mga tao ngayon eh, lifestyle tapos walang exercise," Li-Yu explained.

Genetics is also one of the factors being considered, especially if gout runs in the family.

"Lalo na 'pag pabata ng pabata, and it runs strongly in the family, we look also into the genetics," she said.

Why Filipinos are prone to gout

MANILA -- Gout, or gouty arthritis, affects 1.6 million Filipinos, according to the Philippine Rheumatology Association.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok", Dr. Eric Amante, a rheumatologist, said Filipinos are more prone to gout.

"Alam niyo siguro ang Pilipino, may lahi talaga tayong magka-gout. In fact, siguro tatlo o apat na dekada ang nakaraan, kahit sa US pinagaaralan nila ang mga Filipino, kasi mas mataas talaga ang level ng gout sa mga Pinoy. Maaring genetic to, tapos 'yung diet natin, mataas sa mga pagkain na nakakacause ng uric acid," Amante explained.

Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid production. The excess uric acid is then deposited in the joints, usually in the feet.

"Kapag hindi natin maiihi lahat, mailabas lahat, pupunta siya doon, at doon mamamaga ngayon 'yun. Kasi ang pagkakaintindi ng katawan natin, foreign body. So susugpuin ng katawan 'yun," Amante said.

This reaction causes swelling and inflammation in the joints. People suffering from gout sometimes experience difficulty in moving due to the pain in their inflamed joints.

While gout is often thought to affect the elderly, people as young as 18 years old can suffer also from gout.

Gout treatment includes taking medicines for the pain, as well as anti-inflammatory drugs.

According to Amante, those suffering from gout should visit a rheumatologist. Proper weight management and proper diet can also help prevent gouty arthritis.

Losing hair? You could be suffering from stress

MANILA -- Stress and illnesses can cause hair loss, according to a dermatologist.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok", Dr. Rica Mallari said it takes around three to five years for hair to grow fully.

After five years, the hair will die, and new hair will grow out from the same root.

Mallari added that 90% of a person's hair is continuously growing, with the other 10% falling out.

However, certain conditions can cause growing hair to die prematurely, causing hair fall.

"Kasi kapag nagbuntis, nanganak, kahit 'yung fever, minsan 'yung nag-grow pa, hindi na nag-gogrow, parang nawala 'yung balance sa body," Mallari said, adding that 40% of a person's hair can fall out after suffering from stress or illness.

Excessive hair fall usually stops after a few months, once a person's body has recovered from the imbalance.

The cycle of hair growth and hair fall may continue as long as the imbalance is not addressed.

In some cases, the roots also lessen in size, causing stunted hair growth, or even hair loss.

"Kapag nawala na 'yung root, hindi na tutubo ang buhok," Mallari said.

Mallari advised those suffering from excessive hair fall and hair loss to consult their doctors before taking any medication.

If hair fall is due to stress, or hormonal imbalance, addressing the imbalance can solve the problem.

"Mahirap talaga magpa-grow ng buhok," Mallari added.

Teenagers at high risk of parasitic infection

MANILA -- Recent studies show that adolescent females are at high risk of parasitic infection.

In an interview with Nina Corpuz on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok", Dr. Jun Belizario of the College of Public Health of the University of the Philippines explained that new studies show that adolescents are also at risk of parasitic infection.

The risk is higher for females who experience blood loss through menstruation.

"Lumalabas sa data na even among adolescents, mataas ang infection rate. Kaya pinag-aaralan ng Department of Health (DOH) na isama na ang high school [students], especially adolescent females na nawawalan ng dugo through menstruation," Belizario said.

Parasitic infections like trichinosis, schistosomiasis, and ring worm infection can cause females to lose more blood than normal.

According to Belizario, four to five children, or around 45% of all public school children are are infected with worms.

There are also specific areas in the country with around 80 to 90% of children suffering from parasitic infection.

This infection is often caused by poor hygiene and sanitation.

"Kakulangan sa sanitation. Open defecation promotes transmission ng mga bulate," Belizario said, adding that parasites that infect humans also come from other humans.

"Ang maduming kamay, kakulangan sa tubig, kontaminadong pagkain o tubig ay nagiging sanhi ng infection," he said.

The DOH provides free deworming medicines for children between the ages of 1 to 14. The agency also conducts deworming activities in all public schools twice a day.

Belizario explained that these medicines, which are candy flavored and chewable, are safe and effective for children.

Symptoms of parasitic infection include stomach pains, listlessness, stunting and malnutrition.

The doctor added that parasitic infection also affects school children's performance in school.

How Pope Francis lives with one lung

MANILA -- A geriatric doctor on Monday explained how Pope Francis lives with only one lung.

In an interview on dzMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Marc Evans Abat of the Center for Healthy Aging at The Medical City explained that the right attitude can play a big role in maintaining a person's health.

Pope Francis lost one of his lungs due to an infection when he was a teenager.

For Abat, the pontiff's attitude and good disposition helped him maintain good health.

"Mas mababa ang capacity ng baga ni Pope Francis kaysa sa kaedad niya na dalawa ang baga," he added.

However, the elderly should also take additional precautions to protect themselves from infection, one of the most common afflictions that affect senior citizens.

"Habang tumatanda ka, dumadami ang risk factors sa pagkakasakit. Ang baga, nagkakaroon ng changes due to exposure to different things, o kaya kung naninigarilyo ka, magsusustain ka ng damage, o kaya pollution," Abat said.

Abat also advised those who have old relatives to watch out for symptoms of infections, since they are different from symptoms exhibited by young people.

"Ibang-iba ang representasyon ng sakit sa matatanda kaysa sa mga bata," he said, adding that old people tend to feel weak or lose their appetite when they are sick.

Pope Francis, at 78 years old, showed no signs of slowing down during his five-day apostolic visit to the Philippines.

How to avoid stress, anxiety during the holidays

MANILA - Amid the happy and festive atmosphere this Christmas season, many people also suffer from stress and anxiety due to their busy schedule these coming holidays.

In an interview on the radio show "Magandang Gabi Dok", psychiatrist Bernadette Arcena explained that too much stress and anxiety can lead to serious health problems.

Among the conditions that can worsen due to stress and anxiety are heart problems.

"Kapag may cardiac problems, unang-una kailangan inumin mo 'yung gamot mo. Importante 'yun ah, you have your check up with your cardio," she said.

"Second, bibigyan sila ng mga exercises or some techniques para makabawas sila ng weight, or mamaintain nila 'yung tinatawag natin na timbang. So importante yun," she added.

Aside from maintaining the proper weight and taking medicines, Arcena advised people to eat the right kind of food to keep getting the right kind of nutrients the body needs.

Symptoms
Arcena said that although stress and anxiety usually affect a person's psychological health, these can also have physical manifestations.

Symptoms of stress and anxiety include headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, heavy shoulders, backache, abdominal upset, diarrhea, and muscle pain.

"A lot of these things can happen to a person na sobrang stressed," said Arcena, adding that stress not only affects the body, but also the mind.

"At times, 'yung mood mo apektado rin," the doctor added.

How to avoid stress
Arcena gave some tips to avoid stress and anxiety this coming holiday season.

First, one should know his or her priorities. Planning events, parties, and other things can help in preventing stressful situations.

It is also important to have time to relax.

"Importante 'yun ah, hindi lang tayo work nang work," Arcena said.

The doctor also suggests having micro-vacations, or even micro-breaks.

"Weekends lang, or during the day you can have micro-breaks," she added.

Arcena describes micro-breaks as five to ten minute breaks one should take every day whenever they start to feel stressed or anxious.

For those suffering from broken relationships, Arcena said it is important to learn to forgive oneself, and to surround oneself with happy people.

"Kasi may mga memories na attached with Christmas, so it is important to surround yourself with people. Go with people who can make you feel valuable, and don't be alone," she added.

What you need to know about sepsis

MANILA -- Are you worried you or someone you know might have sepsis? Here are ways to identify its symptoms.

Sepsis is a life-threatening complication caused by any kind of infection. Formerly referred to as blood infection, it became known in 2005 as the cause of death of Pope John Paul II.

In an interview on "Magandang Gabi Dok" on Thursday, Dr. Jose Emmanuel Palo of The Medical City explained how common infections can lead to sepsis.

"Ang sepsis ay reaction ng katawan sa isang infection," Palo said. "Hindi siya 'yung infection, separate po siya doon sa infection mismo. Kaya lang, 'yung reaction po na iyon, inherent po, nasa loob ng katawan natin. Minsan nakaka-damage po or nakakasama sa sariling mga organs or tissues po ng katawan natin."

Any kind of infection, whether caused by a virus, bacteria or fungus, may cause sepsis, Palo added.

Sepsis can also lead to death, especially in severe cases.

According to Palo, common symptoms of sepsis include fever, increase in pulse and heart rate, rapid breathing and a feeling of weakness.

Once it becomes severe, sepsis can also cause a person's blood pressure to drop.

"Kapag bumagsak na ang blood pressure ng isang taong may sepsis, tapos hindi na po mahabol using swero o fluids, nangangailangan na po ng special na medicines para mapaakyat ang blood pressure," Palo added.

Palo said it is important for people to immediately consult a doctor once they notice these symptoms.

"Ang importante siguro is kapag nandoon na ang mga symptoms or signs na 'yun at nararamdaman natin, the moment po na feeling natin kakaiba na po ang pakiramdam, nanghihina po, mas importante po siguro na i-check po kung nangyayari na ang sepsis."

Doctors can then check whether a person is suffering from sepsis through blood tests.

Palo also said people with prevailing illnesses like cancer, or those undergoing treatments like dialysis, are at high risk of sepsis.

This is also the reason why doctors and other hospital personnel should practice proper hygiene.

"Halimbawa may cancer. Habang nag-chemotherapy, habang ginagamot, bumabagsak ang immune system. Mas mataas ang chance na magkaroon ng sepsis," he added.

What happens during a heart attack

MANILA -- Here's what happens when a person suffers from a heart attack.

On Thursday's episode of "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Jose Paolo Prado, a cardiologist from The Medical City, explained how a person can suffer from heart attack.

More often than not, a heart attack is caused by clogged arteries or veins.

Chest pain is the most common symptom of a heart attack, especially if it is felt after a strenuous activities, or extreme emotions.

"Kapag bumibilis ang tibok ng puso, kinakailangan ng oxygen."

Prado also explained that unlike other people, those suffering from diabetes do not feel chest pains.

Instead, they feel pain in other parts of their body, which makes it more difficult to determine whether they are suffering from a heart attack.

Those who feel sudden chest pains must immediately go to the hospital for immediate treatment.

"Ang pagpunta po sa ospital ay napakaimportante po kasi nagmamadali po kami kapag nagbabara 'yung ugat, kasi gusto namin mabuksan ulit 'yung nagbabarang ugat ng mabilisan," Prado said, adding that if possible, an emergency angioplasty should be performed on a patient within 90 minutes.

Why too much sleepiness is a dangerous symptom

MANILA -- Do you feel sleepy all throughout the day? You might think it's just because of lack of sleep, but it can also be red flag for something more serious.

In an interview on dzMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Mike Sarte, a sleep medicine specialist, explained the symptoms and causes of sleep apnea, and how it can cause death.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing. Although it does not cause immediate death, it can trigger serious health problems.

Symptoms

Sarte said that the symptoms of sleep apnea include snoring, witnessed apnea, and daytime sleepiness. He added that all these symptoms are experienced by a person before he or she can be diagnosed with sleep apnea.

He explained that snoring is normal, but habitual snoring is not.

"Ito yung kapag madalas na humihilik, yung tuwing matutulog, naghihilik. Tapos sobrang lakas humilik, na kahit isarado mo na ang pinto, pakinig mo pa rin."

"Yung witnessed apnea, iyun yung nakikita ng ibang tao, pwedeng iyung bed partner mo, na bigla na lang tumitigil ang paghinga mo. Iyung humihilik ka, tapos biglang titigil, tapos hihilik ulit," Sarte added.

Daytime sleepiness is when a person feels sleepy or falls asleep any time within the day.

"May mga tao na biglang nakakatulog. Ang tawag dun, microsleep. Delikado yun kasi sa US, isa ito sa causes ng motor vehicle accidents, yung falling asleep while driving."

Sarte added that people who are diagnosed with sleep apnea shouldn't be allowed to drive.

What happens when we sleep?
Sarte explained that people normally go through different cycles of sleep, known as the non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and REM sleep.

Non-REM sleep is the transition from being awake to being asleep. REM is when people go on a deep sleep, when they start dreaming.

People with sleep apnea do not reach both cycles.

"Kung may sleep apnea, hindi ka umaabot sa REM or non-REM stage. Tumunog lang ang cellphone mo, magigising ka kaagad. Hindi talaga nakakatulog," Sarte said.

He added that what's important for people is the quality of sleep, as the duration differs from person to person.

"Una, yung quality. Pangalawa, yung duration, pero depende yun sa tao. At least 5 to 8 hours, pero may mga taong okay na sila sa 5 hours of sleep."

Causes
Sarte said that sleep apnea can be caused either by genetics, or by excess weight.

People who experience soft tissue collapse in their nose and throats may suffer from sleep apnea, as their airways may be obstructed.

Having large tonsils can also obstruct airways.

"Karamihan sa mga humihilik, nakabukas ang bibig kasi naba-block ang ilong. We are preferential nasal breathers."

Sarte added that some children have excess tissues in their throat and nose, which make sound when they breathe.

Men who are overweight are also more prone to sleep apnea, as the excess weight in the body puts more pressure on the area around the nose and throat.

"Kapag humihinto sa paghinga, bumababa ang oxygen level at nagkakaproblema ang puso. It also causes arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)."

What makes sleep apnea deadly?

Although sleep apnea as it is does not cause sudden death, it can be deadly as it causes complications like hypertension, Type II diabetes, congestive heart failure and stroke.

Sarte said that losing weight can help a lot in preventing sleep apnea.

He also advised against eating heavy dinner, drinking too much alcohol, and smoking a lot before sleeping.

Those who suffer from sleep apnea because of genetic causes can undergo surgery to remove excess tissues that block the airways.

He added that sleeping on one's side can help clear the airways and can prevent snoring.

One can also use a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, which is attached to a mask worn over the mouth and nose that pushes air through the nose and airways.

This machine facilitates continuous sleep, and prevents pauses in breathing.

Sarte said that this machine is locally available, and can be bought for about P40,000 to P45,000.
