Multi-masking hacks for different types of skin

Nothing beats a classic clay mask. Benefits abound: They’re often natural, they offer quick results, they feel great on skin, and they’re practically made for easy at-home use.

And honestly, what other skin product can you actually see working—drying out to unclog and detox pores in a matter of minutes? Clay masks provide the better way to pamper your individual skin type and get worthwhile results.

And when used once or twice a week, a good clay mask can go a long way to draw out impurities, brighten dull, tired skin and, in the long term, help even breakouts.

But just like everything in your makeup bag, one size does not fit all, and a single type of face mask won’t address all your skin concerns. Realistically, every girl has a combination of different skin types; some girls are dry skin, but oily in the T-Zone; some are acne-prone, but also sensitive at the perimeter of the cheeks.

To effectively use clay masks, you need to target the application based on the skin concern of that one area. It may seem inconvenient to buy more than one clay mask, but this way you can create a more customized treatment for your skin.

Here’s how you can make full use of your clay mask on the different parts of your face.

ON YOUR T-ZONE

Our T-zone tends to be oilier, more prone to blockages and spots—it shines and develops impurities, as the sebaceous glands in this area of the face are especially active. So, you should carefully choose a care product that is specifically tailored for your skin type.

Try: L’Oréal’s Pure Clay Anti Pores Mask, it can help you remove your impurities, reduce blackheads and excessive sebum.

ON CHEEKS

Most girls cheek area has some dark and dry spots. Switch to a mask that tackles dullness, rough texture, fine lines and wrinkles to energize the area.

Try: Choose a clay mask like L’Oréal Pure Clay Hydration Mask formulated with mineral rich Bentonite Clay to reduce your excessive facial oil to leave your skin soft, clear and purified.

ON EYES

The under eye area is the thinnest and most fragile skin on your face so you have to treat it delicately. It’s also the tattle tale that shows the most signs of being tired.

Try: L’Oréal’s Pure Clay Illuminating Mask, it contains exfoliating particles and lemongrass extract to leave skin clean and radiant!

Itchy skin? Common allergies during summer

MANILA -- Allergies start with a sneeze or sudden itchiness of the skin. They are not something you should overlook, according to an expert.

Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (PSAAI) president and allergist Carmela Kasala discussed common allergies during summer in an interview with DZMM.

According to Kasala, eczema or atopic dermatitis is one of the common allergies during summer. Eczema is the inflammation of the skin characterized by itchy red rash.

"'Yan [eczema] dahil sa mainit medyo nagwo-worsen during this time, mas nangangati sila, mas nagkakaroon silang pamumula, nagkakamot sila ng todo-todo," Kasala said.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine medication are given to reduce itchiness and redness. The alkalinity and acidity of soap are also factors to look at since high alkaline in soap is also not good for the skin.

Another common allergy is allergic rhinitis which is caused by dust mites, pollen, and other things in the air.

The PSAAI president warned that when if allergic rhinitis is not treated, it may reach the lungs and lead to asthma.

Anti-histamine may also be used for medication of mild allergic rhinitis while nasal spray is given to those who have bad cases. She said hygiene and sanitation is an important against dust mites.

"Ang allergies ay hindi binabasta-basta lang. Baka akala niyo sipon-sipon lang, konting kati-kati 'yan, hindi po. So maaari pong simple lang ang inyong allergy pero minsan po makatsempo lang kayo ng masamang masamang klase ng allergy, pwedeng mahirapan kayong huminga at 'yung iba naman umaabot na po sa puntos ng kamatayan. So kailangan po natin magkonsulta kaagad kung mayron tayong sinususpetsa na allergy," Kasala said.

How to choose the right sunblock

MANILA -- Choosing the right kind of sunblock for your skin is important to maximize its benefits.

In choosing a sunblock, most people think that picking one with the highest sun protection factor (SPF) is the best.

"Usually the SPF we recommend is not lower than (SPF) 15. The higher you go, it doesn’t really mean na pantay 'yun sa proteksyon mo. SPF 15 gives you around 93%, and sa mga studies 50% gives you 95% protection, 2% lang ang itinataas," explained Dr. Cynthia Tan, a dermatologist in an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok".

Most products available in the market have SPF that ranges from 15 to 50.

Aside from choosing the right SPF, one should also choose a product that is right for the skin type.

Tan said a sunblock lotion is perfect for use all over the body. However, a sunblock gel is better for those with oily skin, especially if they want to use the product on their face, while those with dry skin should opt for sunblock creams.

To maximize the effect of sunblock, it should be reapplied every two to two-and-a-half hours, especially when swimming.

Physical, chemical blocks

Tan also explained that different sunblock products can either function as a physical block, or as a chemical block.

"Ang sunblocks kasi pwedeng chemical block siya. Ang chemical block, they use the chemicals. Ang chemicals ang naga-absorb nung rays. Ang physical kasi, parang tinakpan mo siya ng opaque material para mag-reflect na lang 'yung light, hindi siya maabsorb," she added.

Sunblocks with zinc oxide and titanium oxides function as physical blocks.

For Tan, sunblocks that function as physical blocks are better than chemical blocks, since some chemicals cause allergies.

How heat can cause varicose veins

MANILA -- Spending time in the sauna or soaking your feet in a tub of warm water after jogging or working out in the gym can cause varicose veins, a dermatologist warned.

In an interview on DZMM's "Magandang Gabi Dok," Dr. Gwen Wong, a dermatologist, explained that heat can cause veins to bulge and become visible on the surface of the skin.

"I think the heat, it's contributing to 'yung lumalabas ang ugat," she said.

Although the condition may be temporary, repeated exposure to heat may cause the condition to be permanent.

"Pwedeng temporary, pero kapag paulit-ulit, gym tapos sauna tapos gym, maaring maging permanent," Wong said.

Varicose veins and spider veins are caused by poor blood circulation.

"Pag ang blood nagfo-flow, let's say sa lower legs, hindi na nakakabalik dahil dun sa ating mga valves eh depektibo na, especially pagka medyo nagkakaedad na tayo. At minsan eh hormonal, or minsan nga, tama 'yun, dahil sa pagiging obese ng isang tao o mabigat ang timbang, hindi na po nakakabalik [ang dugo] ng maayos sa puso," Wong explained.

People who spend many hours standing or sitting can also suffer from varicose veins.

"Depende po ito sa lifestyle, kung ano 'yung trabahong ginagawa. Halimbawa, buong araw nakatayo, o buong araw nakaupo, kailangan meron din tayong ginagawang mga ehersisyo," Wong added.

One can prevent varicose veins from developing on the legs by raising it above the heart while resting at home.

"Kailangan ini-li-lift po 'yung legs above the heart. Hindi po effective yung inilalagay lang sa silya," Wong said.

Although varicose veins can be treated through sclerotherapy, severe cases of varicose and spider veins may require surgery.

How to prevent pimple scars

MANILA -- Acne may be easy to treat, but it becomes a bigger problem once scars develop on the skin, especially on the face.

In an interview on radio DZMM on Tuesday, Dr. Lia Nebrida-Idea, a dermatologist from St. Luke's Medical Center, advised listeners on how to prevent acne or pimples from causing scars.

Acne is a very common skin condition that affects almost everyone. It usually affects teenagers due to the increase in the production of sebum. It can also be caused by hormonal imbalance, or other conditions.

Nebrida-Idea noted that children as young as 10 years old, or even infants can get acne. Neo-natal acne affects infants, and is usually caused by the mother's hormones. It can also be considered an early sign that a person will have acne.

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome can also suffer from acne breakouts due to hormonal imbalance.

According to Nebrida-Idea, the key to avoiding acne breakouts is to have clean skin.

"You have to wash your face at least twice a day, morning and evening. You don't have to use mga expensive na mga sabon, 'yung ordinary mild cleanser will do. Actually, if you keep on rubbing and scrubbing your face, kung minsan, mas nakakadamage 'to at nakakapagtrigger ng pimples," she added.

There are different ways to treat pimples, but treatment becomes more difficult once scars develop.

"We have to be honest, mahirap mawala ang scars. Sometimes to use incision, or dermabrasion, or laser to treat scars," Nebrida-Idea noted.

The dermatologist also reminded those suffering from acne that there is no "magic" solution for acne.

"Akala nila kapag nagpatingin ka sa derma, kaagad-agad, maganda na. Usually it takes two months, three months, up to six months, depending on the severity of the pimples," she explained.

She also advised those with acne to avoid buying facial cleansers with beads or granules, and just go for hypoallergenic, unscented ones.

Oil-free and water-based facial cleansers are also best for acne-prone skin, she said.

Xian: I'm single, ready to mingle!

MANILA - Xian Lim dodged questions about onscreen partner and rumored girlfriend Kim Chiu on Tuesday, shortly after admitting at a press conference that he is "single and ready to mingle."

The 24-year-old actor drew surprised reactions with the candid confession, which he offered while on stage at the event held by a skincare brand he endorses.

Shortly after the press event, Lim was quizzed by reporters on his status and his ties with Chiu, who has referred to her relationship with the actor as "special."

Asked if he was serious with his statement, Lim said, "Why not?"

"Nagpapasalamat ako kasi feeling ko 'yung mga tumili sa right side, mga fans 'yon, e," he added, referring to the shrieks that followed his candid statement earlier.

Lim was then asked if his being single means that Chiu is "out of the picture." The actor only shrugged and mentioned his endorsed brand.

When a reporter noted that he seemed to be avoiding dicussing Chiu, the actor only said, "We have a very special relationship [at] para sa amin lang 'yon."

He repeated this when asked further about the actress.

Unsure about 'KimXi' team-up

Chiu and Lim's "love team" took off in 2011, and they have since co-starred in three TV series and two films in leading roles.

Fans of the rumored couple, dubbed "KimXi," were surprised when Chiu was paired with Coco Martin in the ongoing period drama "Ikaw Lamang," following the box-office success of the tandem's last film "Bride for Rent."

While Lim said he is set to do a new movie and a TV series, he could not confirm whether the projects would be with Chiu.

"Wala pa po, e," he said, when asked to share details about his upcoming projects. "Hindi pa po nag-sa-start, but as soon as we start, I'm going to let everyone know."

Lim was also asked for his reaction to the intrigues that hounded him recently, following his controversial number with an impersonator of Chiu which was telecast live.

When a reporter noted how Chiu was vocal of her support for him during that time, Lim only said, "Maraming, maraming salamat sa lahat ng... everyone [for[ being there, thank you."

"There are so many things to be grateful for, like this event... I feel really blessed, and there are so many things coming up my way, so I'm just really excited," he added.

"I'm just here to work hard and prove myself to people."

Lim, who is considered as one of the top endorsers in local showbiz, said he did not expect being given so many "blessings" just five years into his career.

"Even noong nagsimula ako sa mga teleserye, I didn't really expect I would go this fast. So maraming, maraming salamat sa lahat ng nagtitiwala," he said.

Makeup tips from the pros

MANILA – Three of the country’s top makeup artists share their secrets to making beauty queens, models and celebrities look good.

On Wednesday’s episode of “Kris TV,” Albert Kurniawan, RB Chanco and Rissa Mananquil-Trillo showed viewers how to achieve different looks using makeup, including the one used by Miss Universe 2013 third-runner up Ariella Arida.

Kurniawan, who is the chief makeup artist of NARS Philippines, is behind the glammed up faces of Arida and her predecessors in the Miss Universe pageant Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup and Janine Tugonon.

Chanco, on the other hand, is a well-known celebrity makeup artist whose clients include Kathryn Bernardo, Erich Gonzales, Bianca Gonzalez and ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio.

Mananquil-Trillo, meanwhile, is a model, beauty columnist and the co-founder of the Happy Skin cosmetics line.

For the beauty queen look

Kurniawan said the first step to achieving a made up look similar to beauty queens is putting a primer, concealer and a tinted moisturizer “to make the skin look more natural instead of having a powder finish.”

Set with translucent powder and add contour to the face. Before doing eye makeup, work on the cheeks first.

“Sometimes, they start with the eyes. But if they start with the eyes strong and apply blush, sometimes we think it’s enough already. Then after a while, it’s kulang pala and then we don’t have the makeup with us,” Kurniawan said.

Using a good makeup brush, apply dark brown eye shadow on the entire lid and blend. Proceed with using eye paint, and then with the eyeliner on the water line.

Curl the eyelashes, and finish with mascara.

For chinitas

Kurniawan suggests starting with eyeliner since the objective is to make the eyes look bigger and the face more “awake.”

“Just a black eyeliner, apply on the outer part of the eye. Blend and then smudge it,” he said. “Kasi for chinita eyes, if you just put a thin liner, it won’t be seen that much.”

Blend with dark brown powder eye shadow, curl the eyelashes, and add mascara to “open” the eyes.

If you want to make your eyes look even bigger, use false lashes. As for the cheeks and lips, just keep it simple.

For the ‘no makeup’ look

Although tricky since “it has to look like there is nothing,” the “no makeup” look is doable, said Chanco.

An easy way to achieve this look is by using airbrush with liquid foundation, followed by blush with a hint of shimmer for that natural glow.

Since you can’t use too much makeup, emphasize the eyebrows by using a dark brown eyebrow pencil, and a pinkish white eye shadow on the eyelids.

The eyeliner should not be too thick, either – just apply black eyeliner on the upper lash and water line, and a soft brown one on the lower lash line.

Complete the look with a soft peach lip cream.

For night makeup

Night makeup is quite similar to the “no makeup look,” except that there is “more intense” contouring on the face.

Chanco said a safe suggestion is to make the eyes look “smoky” with eye shadow, although this still depends on the occasion.

“I-consider more rin kung saan ka pupunta. And the lighting also,” she said.

Apply a more intense pink blush and waterproof eyeliner if you plan on dancing all night so your makeup will last longer.

For job interviews

Mananquil-Trillo said applicants for job interviews should stay away from makeup that glitters or is too bright.

Start with a concealer to brighten the face, correct redness and cover blemishes. Use black eyeliner to define the eyes, and finish the look with peach blush and nude colored lipstick.

For those with blemishes, try a product that will not aggravate the skin, such as a second skin cream with a powder finish.

For holiday makeup

There is no hard and fast rule for holiday makeup, noted Mananquil-Trillo, who said that the idea is to achieve a look that is fun and festive.

The simplest way to do this, she said, is by using bold red lipstick.

“Ano pa ba ang pinaka-festive na color but the color red? It reminds us of Christmas and mas celebratory mood ‘pag bright colors,” she said.

You can also use eyeliner to make the eyes look bigger.

How Pinay made millions from papaya soap

MANILA, Philippines - It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make soap. But it does take a lot of determination to earn millions from it.

Meet Nora Salvane, a chemical engineer who turned P500 worth of coconut oil, papaya extracts, lye and a baking pan into a business that earns P25 million a month.

"Noong 1994, we were hard up financially kaya I prayed to God na bigyan kami ng negosyo," Salvane said.

On ABS-CBN's "My Puhunan," Salvane shared how an unlikely visit from a skin care product salesman inspired her to make her own brand of papaya soap.

"It was God's answer to my prayer that he sent somebody to my office and asked kung interested ba ako sa mga skin care products. Being a chemical engineer by profession, ito na yung sagot sa prayer ko na makapag-practice ako ng profession ko," she said.

It was in her own kitchen, with a baking pan and a determination to help her husband, whose own business was on the verge of bankruptcy, that drove her to slave through the process of making an initial batch of 201 bars of papaya soap.

"I am a fan of baking cake para sa pamilya ko. Anong ginawa ko? Doon ako gumawa ng sabon sa baking pan," Salvane said.

And from then on, making around P1,800 a day through direct selling, that Salvane's company, GT Cosmetics, started to skyrocket her family out of poverty.

Today, GT Cosmetics, who also produce sunblock, whitening creams and various other products, earns P25 million a month, shipping 500 to 1000 boxes of products daily.

"Mga Filipino kasi gusto pumuti," Salvane quipped.

However, Salvane remained humble.

"We acknowledge that it is all from God," she said.

Salvane is currently working on building an elementary school in Liloan, Cebu, investing around P21 million for the project.

"Binabalik namin kung ano yung mayroon kami. We shared to the people working with us, we shared it to the less fortunate. We are planning to open the school next year," she said.

Helping struggling family

And Salvane's generosity would again take spotlight in My Puhunan's segment where they have a self-made millionaire meet a family struggling to jump above the poverty line.

Davila took the family of Jean and Joel Divinagracia, who also sells papaya soap to help appease their everyday needs, to meet Salvane in one of her factories in Cebu.

"Pag wala po siyang trabaho, talagang naglalakad siya, umaalis para lang may kita," said Jean Divinagracia about her husband.

It was like a dream come true for the couple who avidly turns to the weekly ABS-CBN program for inspiration.

"Tuwang-tuwa po kami kasi nakikita namin na ganoon pala, mula sa maliit hanggang lumaki. Sana makarating naman yung opportunity para sa amin," she said.

And it was Salvane, like an answer to their prayers, that taught the couple how to make their own papaya soap in order to help them.

"Pag kayo talaga gumagawa, mas malaki ang kikitain ninyo," said Salvane.

She also gave the couple a few kilos worth of ingredients for the papaya soap and a "little puhunan" to jump-start their business.

"Wag kalimutan magdasal," advised Salvane.

Hair loss, pimples linked to stress

MANILA – If you are shedding hair more than usual or develop dry, itchy skin, you may need a change of scenery or lifestyle.

According to dermatologist Dr. Grace Beltran, hair loss and skin problems may be caused by too much stress.

Beltran said stress can induce pimples, lesions and rashes, which may develop into a skin disease affecting a person’s entire body.

“Ang stress pwedeng directly mag-induce ng skin lesions, pwede ding may genetic problem to begin with tapos na-aggravate ng stress,” she told dzMM’s “Magandang Gabi, Dok.”

“The more stressed you are, the more sensitive you become,” she added.

Beltran said shedding and thinning of hair is also linked to stress, and may occur 3 to 4 months after a stressful episode in a person’s life, including sickness, surgery and pregnancy.

Beltran said a person experiencing stress should try and control it by relaxing, engaging in a new hobby or a change in lifestlye.

“Baguhin mo ‘yung lifestyle mo. Kapag nai-istress ka na, do something about it. Parang mag-liwaliw ka na kaunti,” she said.

How to stay safe in the sun

When taking a break, most of us prefer the option of heading for the sun with one of the first priorities to gain a golden tan. While a tan may look attractive, it does not come without costs, with the sun contributing to premature ageing, and in some cases leading to skin cancer.

The sun does provide vitamin D, a necessary vitamin for healthy living, but when it comes to sun exposure the best general advice is to avoid tanning. A tan is a sign of skin damage. However, if you wish to get a tan, then follow these realbuzz.com tips to do it as safely as possible.

To stay safe in the sun, we need to minimize exposure to ultra violet radiation (UVR). To do this:

1. Limit exposure

Avoid exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., as this is the period of the day when the sun's UVR levels are highest.

2. Seek shade

Sitting in the shade reduces the amount of UVR you receive, but this doesn't fully protect you as UVR reflects off many surfaces such as sand and water, so other methods of skin protection should be utilized.

Personal protection

1. Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be used at all times when in the sun, regardless of how dark your skin is. A sun protection factor of 30+ is best. The higher the number, the greater the protection.

2. Sunscreen should be applied to the skin at least 20 minutes before sun exposure, and reapplied every two hours or more frequently if swimming or perspiring. Sunscreen should not be relied on as the sole form of protecting the skin.

3. Wear a shirt

Wearing a shirt, especially one with long sleeves and collars provides additional protection.

4. Wear a hat

A broad-brimmed hat that covers the head, face, neck and ears will provide the most protection. For children a legionnaire-style hat with added protection for the neck is best.

5. Sunglasses

Quality sunglasses that meet the necessary standards provide good protection for the eyes from UVRs. A close fitting, wrap around style affords the maximum protection for the eyes.

Protecting young children

Youngsters should be kept safe by applying all the tips mentioned above. Young skin is particularly susceptible to burning and damage caused to the skin when young is usually permanent. Many sunscreen products indicate suitability for use on babies and children.

That covers the basics for staying safe in the sun. Now some other general advice that may be of use:

• Do not fool yourself into thinking that if you are not hot that you are not burning. The damage done to the skin is done by UVRs, not related to temperature.

• Avoid the need for a super deep tan. Remember that a sun tan is a sign of sun damage and the deeper the tan, the worse the damage and greater the risk of skin cancer. A skin like leather is also not particularly attractive!

• Start with exposure to sun early in the day or late in the afternoon. Exposure can be increased gradually.

• You can still get sunburned on cloudy days or when
sitting in the shade.

 • Take care if participating in water sports. Water can wash off some suncscreen, while if you are boating wind combined with the reflection of the sun off the water can lead to burning. Read more at www.realbuzz.com.
