Miley Cyrus settles $300 million lawsuit claiming she stole 'We Can't Stop'

NEW YORK - Miley Cyrus has settled a $300 million copyright infringement lawsuit by a Jamaican songwriter who accused the pop star of stealing her 2013 smash "We Can't Stop" from a similar song he recorded a quarter century earlier.

Michael May, who performs as Flourgon, sued Cyrus in March 2018, claiming that "We Can't Stop" closely resembled his 1988 song "We Run Things," which he called a reggae favorite since reaching No. 1 in his home country.

May accused Cyrus and her label RCA Records, owned by Sony Corp, of misappropriating material including the phrase "We run things. Things no run we," which she sang as "We run things. Things don't run we."

May, Cyrus, Sony and other defendants filed a joint stipulation in Manhattan federal court on Friday ending the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it cannot be filed again.

Cyrus' lawyers said in a Dec. 12 letter that a settlement agreement had been signed, and that the stipulation would be filed "pending payment of the settlement proceeds," which were not specified.

Lawyers for May and Cyrus did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

"We Can't Stop," from Cyrus' album "Bangerz," peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2013.

It was blocked from hitting No. 1 by Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," the subject of its own high-profile copyright case over its resemblance to Marvin Gaye's 1977 song "Got To Give It Up."

Twerking hillbilly? Yes. Cheater and liar? No, says Miley Cyrus

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Miley Cyrus on Thursday said she was no angel, but angrily denied rumors she had cheated on her estranged husband, actor Liam Hemsworth.

In a series of postings on Twitter a day after Hemsworth filed for divorce after just seven months of marriage, the 26-year-old singer said she had nothing to hide.

“You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking, foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar,” the “Wrecking Ball” singer wrote.

“I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating,” she said.

Hemsworth and Cyrus announced through a representative earlier this month that they had separated, shocking fans of the former Disney Channel child star and leading to rumors and speculation in celebrity media about the cause.

A day later, Cyrus was photographed kissing celebrity blogger and reality TV star Kaitlynn Carter on a boat in Italy. Last week she released a break-up single, “Slide Away,” with lyrics that suggested Hemsworth had alcohol issues, which sources close to him have denied.

Australian actor Hemsworth, best known for “The Hunger Games” films, filed for divorce in Los Angeles on Wednesday citing irreconcilable differences.

Cyrus tweeted on Thursday that although she would always love Hemsworth, who she met 10 years ago and married in December 2018, she “had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind.”

Miley Cyrus' family wants her to 'reconsider split'

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's families reportedly want them to reconsider their decision to split.

The 26-year-old pop star and Hemsworth, 29, recently announced their separation after less than 12 months of marriage, but according to an insider, their families hope they will take some time to reconsider the move.

The insider shared: "Their families have urged them to take some time to breathe before they make any final decisions.

"They are both upset about how this has blown up and are both hurting right now."

The high-profile duo tied the knot in December 2018, but decided to go their separate ways after their priorities changed.

More specifically, it's claimed that Cyrus "outgrew" her party-loving ways of the past.

The insider explained to E! News: "Liam was continuing to party with his friends. They used to party, but Miley outgrew that phase."

Meanwhile, a source close to Cyrus previously claimed that the chart-topping singer is having a "hard time" letting go of Hemsworth.

Cyrus is apparently struggling to get over him because of their extensive history together, having first met on the set of the 2010 movie "The Last Song."

The insider said: "They have a long history together, and that's a huge part of why she has a hard time letting him go. At the end of the day, she wants to be happy, and she genuinely wants Liam to be happy too."

Cyrus and Hemsworth are holding off on filing for divorce for now and friends believe that they could get back together in the future.

The source added: "They're having a break right now because they needed it.

"It was a bad situation with a lot of disagreements. They both agreed it's better to spend time apart, but this doesn't mean their relationship is completely over."

Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth reportedly split after less than a year of marriage

American singer Miley Cyrus and Australian actor Liam Hemsworth have split up less than a year after getting married, magazine People reported on Sunday.

A representative for Cyrus told People in a statement that the celebrity couple “have agreed to separate at this time.”

The representative, according to the report, added that Cyrus and Hemsworth “have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.”

Cyrus and Hemsworth tied the knot last December 23 in a wedding attended by their families and closest friends at Cyrus' home in Franklin, Tennessee.

Lawsuit says Miley Cyrus stole 'We Can't Stop,' seeks $300 million

NEW YORK - Miley Cyrus was sued for $300 million on Tuesday by a Jamaican songwriter who said the pop singer's 2013 smash "We Can't Stop" closely resembles a song he recorded 25 years earlier, and that she is infringing his copyright.

Michael May, who performs as Flourgon, said his 1988 song "We Run Things" has been "a favorite for lovers of reggae music worldwide" since reaching No. 1 in his home country, and that about 50 percent of "We Can't Stop" comes from him.

He accused Cyrus and her label RCA Records, owned by Sony Corp, of misappropriating his material, including the phrase "We run things. Things no run we," which she sings as "We run things. Things don't run we."

Representatives for Cyrus, 25, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A spokeswoman for Sony did not immediately respond to a similar request.

May said he sought to protect his work last year with the US Copyright Office, and in November won "formal copyright protection" for all musical arrangements in "We Run Things."

He said Cyrus' song "owes the basis of its chart-topping popularity to and its highly-lucrative success to plaintiff May's protected, unique, creative and original content."

The Kingston, Jamaica resident is also seeking a halt to further sales and performances of "We Can't Stop," according to his complaint filed with the US District Court in Manhattan.

While the complaint did not specify damages, May's lawyers in a press statement described it as a $300 million case.

"We Can't Stop," from Cyrus' album "Bangerz," peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2013.

It was kept from the top by Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," itself the subject of a high-profile copyright case over its resemblance to a 1977 Marvin Gaye song.

Miley Cyrus poses for 'most explicit' photo shoot

MANILA – Singer Miley Cyrus shocks the public once again with what has been dubbed as various websites as her “most explicit” photo shoot yet.

The 22-year-old former Disney star is seen posing topless and making provocative gestures in a series of covers for a magazine called Candy, which is described as “celebrating transvestism, transsexuality, crossdressing and androgyny in all their glory.”

Cyrus’ photos were taken by controversial photographer Terry Richardson, who also directed the singer’s “Wrecking Ball” video.

Here’s a look at one of the “tame” covers, as posted by Cyrus on her Instagram page.

Last August, Cyrus stole the scene with her outrageous outfits at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

The singer wore anything from silver suspenders to a crop top shaped like eyes.

Taylor who? All eyes on wildcard Miley Cyrus for MTV VMA show

LOS ANGELES - Justin Bieber might be making a comeback and Taylor Swift is leading nominees, but at Sunday's annual MTV Video Music Awards, all eyes will be on the show's wildcard host, Miley Cyrus.

After twerking her way into national headlines with a latex lingerie-clad performance of "Blurred Lines" with Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMA show, former Disney Channel star Cyrus has made the most of her raunchy side.

It's an image that MTV has harnessed for promoting this year's VMAs, a show that honors the achievements in music videos but is better known for its unexpected and outrageous moments.

In promotions for the show, Cyrus, 22, is seen wearing dolphin and pizza pasties covering her breasts, strutting in a skimpy swimsuit and swinging on a wire dressed in a spacesuit while repeating curse words strategically bleeped out.

"We've had a long-standing relationship with her from the 2013 VMAs," said Amy Doyle, executive producer of the show. "She continues to be an amazing character in pop culture, she's musical and has lots of personality."

The MTV Video Music Awards are often the place where artists go to make a splash - from Eminem rapping with dozens of his lookalikes in 2000 to Lady Gaga donning a dress made of raw meat in 2010 and Beyonce revealing her baby bump in 2011.

"Every artist we're collaborating with wants theirs to be most memorable performance of the night," Doyle said. "There's creative competition because of the historical nature of the show and moments that go on to live in pop culture."

At 2009's show, Swift won for best female video but was promptly cut off on stage by rapper Kanye West, who snatched her microphone and declared "I'mma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."

It's a moment that went down in VMA history and could come full circle on Sunday as West receives MTV's Video Vanguard award honoring his career. Swift is rumored to be the one presenting him with the award - not that MTV is letting anything slip.

It's all about tuning in live and sharing in the experience, Doyle said. "There's a fear of missing out if something's happening live and you're not a part of it."

Swift has a leading nine VMA nominations going into Sunday's show, where performers will include Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Tori Kelly.

“Look,” he wrote as he stood with his back to the camera on the edge of a boat.

According to reports, Bieber is currently in Bora Bora for a vacation. It was not mentioned who he is traveling with.

Fellow singer Miley Cyrus poked fun at Bieber’s photo by reposting it on her own Instagram page and comparing it to Rihanna’s behind.

Twerking dates back to 1820, says Oxford dictionary

LONDON, United Kingdom - The word "twerk" dates back to as early as 1820, the Oxford English Dictionary said Thursday as it announced twerking as one of 500 new entries this year.

The word rocketed into popular use following US singer Miley Cyrus's controversial gyrating at a music awards performance in 2013.

However, research by the OED -- which styles itself as the definitive record of the English language -- found "twirk" was first used as a noun in 1820, referring to a "twisting or jerking movement".

The verb is believed to have emerged later in 1848, with the "twerk" spelling popularly used by 1901.

"We are confident that it is the same origins as the dance. There has been constant use up into the present day to mean that same thing," said OED senior editor Fiona McPherson.

"I think it's quite spectacular, the early origins for it. We were quite surprised."

Described as dancing "in a sexually provocative manner, using thrusting movements of the bottom and hips while in a low, squatting stance", twerking has its modern roots in the early 1990s New Orleans "bounce" music scene.

Webisode, e-cigarette and twitterati are among the other words entering the OED.

For a word to qualify, it must have been have been in common use for at least 10 years in both newspapers and novels.

McPherson said all the new entries had "earned their place" in the history of the English language.

An e-cigarette is described as a "cigarette-shaped device containing a nicotine-based liquid or other substance that is vaporized and inhaled, used to simulate the experience of smoking". The word's usage can be traced back to 2007.

Twitterati, describing users of the social media service, and "fo' shizzle", meaning "for sure", have also been added to the dictionary.

The word webisode -- "a short video, especially an instalment in a drama or comedy series, which is presented online rather than being broadcast on television" -- was first recorded in 1996.

Another new entry is FLOTUS, an acronym for the first lady of the United States which was used as early as 1983, and is now Michelle Obama's official twitter handle.

Freegan, first recorded in The Sunday Times newspaper in 1997 to describe a person who eats discarded food, typically from supermarket refuse, for ethical reasons, also enters the OED.

Meanwhile "meh", an interjection expressing lack of enthusiasm, has also been included and is thought to date back to 1992 before it was popularised by TV cartoon series "The Simpsons".

Madonna brings Katy, Miley, and more to new video

Madonna has brought out some of the biggest fellow names in pop -- and two of her children -- in a new video she debuted Wednesday on the fledgling streaming service Tidal.

Beyonce, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Kanye West all make cameo appearances in the video for "Bitch, I'm Madonna," off her latest album "Rebel Heart."

Madonna released the video initially on Tidal, where it will appear exclusively for one day before wider distribution.

But a number of users reported technical problems, saying that the video froze up when they first tried to watch.

"We apologize to all the fans excited to watch the #BitchImMadonna video, we're working on a fix," said a Tidal message on Twitter before later reporting smoother streaming.

Tidal -- led by rap mogul Jay-Z with participation of Madonna and other stars -- has promoted exclusives in a bid to win subscribers.

But despite a splashy launch on March 30, Tidal trails more established players in the growing field of streaming, led by Spotify.

The video -- which also features hip-hop star Nicki Minaj, who collaborated on the song originally -- depicts a party atmosphere and was shot at the Standard High Line, a hotel in New York's Meatpacking District known for its nightclub with a jacuzzi overlooking the city.

"Bitch, I'm Madonna" also includes rare appearances by two of the Material Girl's four children, 14-year-old Rocco and nine-year-old David.

"Rebel Heart," Madonna's 13th studio album, shows a growing hip-hop direction for the pop icon whose dance numbers and risque persona have made her one of music's most successful artists since the 1980s.

Madonna, 56, will launch a global tour on September 9 in Montreal. Her 88-date "MDNA" tour in 2012 grossed more than $300 million and generated controversy as she raised her voice on stage on issues ranging from gay rights to the rise of Europe's far right.

Miley Cyrus goes nude for magazine – again

MANILA – First it was a wrecking ball, then some strategically placed soap bubbles. Now it’s a pig, mud and body paint.

Controversial singer Miley Cyrus is at it again as she poses nude for a magazine, with the photos released online on Wednesday.

Paper, the same magazine that attempted to “break the Internet” with its pictorial of reality TV star Kim Kardashian, featured Cyrus covered in mud while hugging her pet pig, Bubba Sue, from behind.

While her pet helped Cyrus preserve her modesty on the cover photo, other snaps from the magazine showed the singer completely nude, with bright paint over her private parts.

In a write-up published on Paper, Cyrus said she has come to consider her sexuality and gender identification as fluid: “I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult – anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.”

“I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl,” she added, noting her romantic engagements with both women and men.

Early this year, Cyrus went nearly full frontal for V magazine.

Pop's ladies lead MTV VMAs with raunchy moves, tears

INGLEWOOD, California -- With some twerking and shaking, the leading ladies of pop music dominated the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, while an emotional Miley Cyrus and a touching moment between Beyonce and her family led the Moonman award wins of the night.

Cyrus, who set tongues wagging last year with her raunchy "twerking" during her VMAs performance, won the night's top prize for video of the year for "Wrecking Ball," in which she cavorted naked on a wrecking ball.

She opted not to collect her award, instead sitting in the audience and holding back tears while sending a homeless young man named Jesse to collect her award.

"I've cleaned your hotels rooms, I've been an extra in your movies, I've been an extra in your life. Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have many of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight," the young man said.

Earlier on the red carpet, Cyrus said she "retired" her grinding explicit dance moves. But while Cyrus has retired the twerk, rapper Nicki Minaj brought her rump-grinding to kick off the show with hip hop song "Anaconda," scantily clad and twerking against a jungle-themed backdrop.

Since launching in 1984, Viacom-owned MTV's VMAs have become synonymous with irreverence and unscripted moments that have become part of music history, and all eyes were on whoever delivered the most outrageous or unplanned stunt.

Beyonce, delivered the night's most touching moment when accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award for her lifetime achievement in music from her husband, rapper Jay Z, who called her the "greatest living entertainer."

Jay Z, carrying the couple's daughter Blue Ivy, then shared a sweet kiss on stage with his wife, who was overcome with emotion, saying "I have nothing to say, I am so full from gratitude."

The singer, dressed in a sparkly bodysuit and surrounded by large screens and silhouetted dancers, performed a mini-concert of her hits including "Haunted" "Drunk in Love," "Partition" and "Blue," her ode to her daughter.

Beyonce picked up three other awards: best collaboration for "Drunk in Love" with Jay Z, and best cinematography and video with a social message for "Pretty Hurts."

Pop music's ladies delivered high-octane performances throughout the night. Ariana Grande kicked off the show with "Break Free" before joining Minaj and Jessie J for "Bang Bang."

Taylor Swift debuted her upbeat first single "Shake It Off" from her upcoming pop album "1989," while Azalea and British singer Rita Ora performed their sultry track "Black Widow."

In stark comparison to the over-the-top performances by the ladies of pop on the VMAs stage, British newcomer Sam Smith used a bare set to showcase his voice on his hit "Stay With Me," while rockers Maroon 5 performed "Maps" outside of the newly renovated Forum theater in Inglewood, with hundreds of fans.

The presenters also got in on the fun, with Jim Carrey tumbling on stage while announcing best pop video with Jeff Daniels. "Saturday Night Live" cast member Jay Pharoah impersonated Jay Z and Kanye West.

Other top winners of the fan-voted awards included Katy Perry landing the best female video Moonman for the Cleopatra-themed music video for "Dark Horse." British singer Ed Sheeran won best male video Moonman "Sing," Lorde won best rock video for "Royals," and Grande won best pop video for "Problem" featuring Azalea.

In the tightly contested Artist to Watch category, girl group Fifth Harmony's "Miss Movin' On" beat out Australian boyband 5 Seconds of Summer, rapper Schoolboy Q and British singers Sam Smith and Charlie XCX.

Miley Cyrus says after Disney, it was time to be herself

LOS ANGELES - It is sex, drugs and pop music - and Miley Cyrus is fine with it that way now that the provocative singer has shed her innocent Disney star image along with most of her clothes.

Cyrus, 21, who has grabbed headlines in the past year for her admitted drug use, sexually suggestive dancing and wearing as little as boots in a music video, said she was surprised by the scrutiny her new persona has attracted.

"I went from people just thinking I was, like, a baby to people thinking I'm this, like, sex freak that really just pops molly and does lines all day," Cyrus told the New York Times in an interview to be published on Sunday and made available early online, referring to the drugs MDMA and cocaine, respectively.

"It's like, 'Has anyone ever heard of rock 'n' roll?'" the "Wrecking Ball" singer countered. "There's a sex scene in pretty much every single movie, and they go, 'Well, that's a character.' Well, that's a character. I don't really dress as a teddy bear and, like, twerk on Robin Thicke, you know?"

Cyrus, who rose to prominence as a teen star of the Disney musical TV series "Hannah Montana," has become a bad girl of pop music since her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in September when she "twerked" (a sexually suggestive dance) during a performance of Thicke's hit "Blurred Lines."

"I don't have a bunch of celeb friends, because I feel like some of them are a little scared of the association," Cyrus said of her new persona. "This is terrible. I was backstage with (the rising pop star) Ariana Grande. I'm like, 'Walk out with me right now and get this picture, and this will be the best thing that happens to you, because just you associating with me makes you a little less sweet.'"

Cyrus, whose newest music video "Adore You" shows her writhing between bed sheets in her underwear, sucking her thumb and rubbing her body, said she feels more free to be herself now that she is no longer under a Disney contract.

"When I was no longer employed by anyone, that's when I was like, 'O.K., I'm going to do my own thing.' But I waited until I felt like I had respectfully finished out what I was supposed to do, you know?" she said.

Cyrus signed with label RCA this year after releasing her first three albums on Disney's Hollywood Records.

Cyrus, the daughter of country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus, also fired back at pop star Joe Jonas, formerly of the Jonas Brothers, who said Cyrus and pop singer Demi Lovato introduced him to marijuana.

"If you want to smoke weed, you're going to smoke weed," Cyrus said. "There's nothing that two little girls are going to get you to do that you don't want to do."

Miley Cyrus lights 'joint' at MTV awards

AMSTERDAM -- Katy Perry won the award for best female singer at the 2013 MTV EMA music awards on Sunday, pipping Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus to the post in MTV's first award ceremony since the launch a week ago of the upstart YouTube Music Awards.

But Cyrus stole the show by lighting what could have been a joint, in a nod to the host city's famously tolerant attitude towards soft drugs.

She had earlier been photographed in one of Amsterdam's best-known coffeeshops where soft drugs are on the menu.

With the three pop divas in contention, the prize for best female was the most closely watched battle at the Viacom-owned music network's 20th annual European awards ceremony.

Claiming her third EMA award, U.S. singer Perry gave a dramatic rendition of her song "Unconditionally," suspended like a sequin-covered glitter ball 9 meters above a gigantic outer-space-themed set.

"It's my goal to get (my music) to as many ears as possible," she said on the red carpet before the show. "If that's happening, I'm happy."

When Cyrus picked up her best video award for "Wrecking Ball," she made a show of not finding the space for the bauble in her handbag.

"You know I couldn't fit this award in my bag but I did find this," she said, pulling out a hand-rolled cigarette which she lit as she walked off the stage.

Earlier, the former Disney star, who caused a sensation with her raunchy "twerking" performance with actor Robin Thicke at the U.S.-based Video Music Awards in August, took to the red carpet in a bold mini dress on which the words "Please Stop Violence" were wrapped tightly around her hip.

British-Irish boy band One Direction had a good night, taking the prize for best pop, while Harry Styles, known as much for his singing in the band as for his celebrity girlfriends, was awarded best style.

Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto reacted to his band's winning the best alternative prize by calling for a minute of silence for those affected by typhoon Yolanda, which hit the Philippines on Friday, killing an estimated 10,000 people. The call went largely unheeded.

"It's hard to hear in there ... but the message is what's important, to send some love and support across the world," he said backstage afterwards.

Justin Bieber held on to his best male status for a fourth consecutive year, while Beyonce and Bruno Mars won awards for best live act and best song, respectively. China's Chris Lee won best worldwide act.

New competition

U.S. rapper Eminem was given a "Global Icon" prize for lifetime achievement along with best hip-hop, just a week after being declared artist of the year at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards, run by emerging music industry rival Google.

In the face of the new competition, the MTV EMA awards are being seen as a test of the ability of MTV, one of the most prominent brands of the 1980s and 1990s, to flourish in the internet era.

Robert Bakish, head of Viacom's broadcast division, said he was confident the company would rise to the challenge.

While MTV has dominated the field with its annual pop music awards since 1984, when the Video Music Awards were launched, video-sharing site YouTube, with its one billion viewers a month, has utterly remade the popular music business.

"There's always competition, traditional competition and new competition," Bakish told Reuters on the red carpet before the show.

"The EMA is the ultimate multiplatform expression, we combine live television with digital and on Web and on mobile," he said.

Miley as songwriter

MANILA, Philippines - The video of her Top 10 hit Can’t Be Tamed, sees a winged Miley Cyrus busting out of her cage. It makes sense, since the world has been watching breathlessly as Miley plays out her artistic liberation. Miley, 17, looks to a more adventurous musical
future with her new Hollywood Records album Can’t Be Tamed.

“The album says the most about me,” Miley notes. “I wanted this record to be completely and totally honest. It’s really about a little of everything going on in my life now.”

Miley co-wrote all but one song. As before, she teamed up with producer/songwriters John Shanks and Rock Mafia (Tim James and Antonina Armato) to craft every note. Result: Furious dance beats, intimate ballads
and that distinctive vocal adrenaline.

Liberty Walk and the title track frame the hunger for freedom in sleek synth sounds. Taking it further is Robot (“Stop trying to live my life for me/I need to breathe/I’m not your robot”).

Ballads Stay, Scars and Take Me Along are about trying to live a normal life — including love relationships — when the world tugs at your time. In Stay, Cyrus writes about being lonely on the road and in Scars, she recalls past relationships that must be left behind. Forgiveness & Love captures Miley’s credo of faith and My Heart Beats for Love is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt judged. The upbeat Two More Lonely People and Permanent.
