Boracay now has a food hall with Streetmarket
BORACAY -- From posh restaurants to fast casual eateries to fast food chains, Boracay has it all. And now, another popular dining concept recently opened on the island -- a food hall.
A food hall is similar to the dated food court concept. However, the food vendors are carefully curated and the design more contemporary and chic. It's basically a modern-day food court with fast casual dining sensibilities.
Like most food halls in Metro Manila, Streetmarket Boracay is quite modern and houses various hipster-ish food options to choose from -- from pizza to fried chicken to burgers to tacos.
Located inside Station X, the commercial space of the newly opened Hue Hotel and Resort, Streetmarket is the first and only food hall of Boracay, which has consistently been named one of the best islands in the world.
“My wife, Odette and I partnered with the owners of Hue Hotel for this business. We were lucky enough to meet with our partners and we discovered that we had a common vision for what we’d like to achieve for Streetmarket, which was to elevate the casual dining scene on the island and create a space that everyone wants to relax in,” explained co-owner Nowie Potenciano.
Potenciano said that the planning of the dining concept started as early as 2015. It initially opened in March 2017. He and his team conceptualized the look of the restaurants while the common areas were designed by the hotel.
The new hotel is owned and managed by Hue Hotels and Resorts and is located at Station 2 by the main road. The company, which also manages a property in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, tapped New York-based CAZA Architects to design Hue Boracay. Unlike most hotels, the property has an open concept, seamlessly connecting the hotel to the commercial area, giving guests a lot more space.
One of the striking design features are the common areas. The Instagram-worthy space is located at the middle of the commercial complex, surrounded by the Prisma bar, restaurants, and shops. It has a faux grass flooring with some cool furniture like beanbags, wooden picnic tables, and native mats for floor seating. It also has a huge geometric chair swing in the middle, a favorite among guests.
“What we wanted for the food hall was for it to be design-forward but still fit the beach vibe of Boracay. We avoided making it too urban or industrial, instead, we wanted it to feel cozy and relaxing,” he said.
The main food hall has its own dinning space, apart from the common areas, and houses eight food stalls namely: Percy, which serves seafood; Winner Winner offers buttermilk fried chicken; Fat Rice for some Southeast Asian dishes; Diavolo for Neapolitan-style pizza; Santa Peligrosa serves Mexican food; Poketo is a Japanese grill; and Sugar Cloud for bingsu, fresh juices and shakes. There's also Local Color, an artisanal local souvenir shop.
In the area, there are also restaurants that have their own space like Little Wave Coffee Co. and The Tart Shop, both also owned by Potencianos.
“All the concepts at Streetmarket Boracay are originals that were designed and conceptualized especially for this food hall. None of them have any branches elsewhere. We selected these concepts and their dishes carefully in order to make sure we had something to offer for everyone,” Potenciano said.
“One important thing that’s different about Streetmarket Boracay is that there is only one operator for all the restaurants—that makes sure that we are able to offer a wide variety of options without them being too similar to one another and also maintain a high standard. This means that a family or a barkada can all find something delicious to eat at Streetmarket—they can all come over and walk away happy. I believe that with more than 120 different dishes available, Streetmarket has the widest variety in such a small space on the island,” he ended.

Post-presidency, Obama tries kiteboarding, watersports
Barack Obama has been enjoying life after the US presidency by trying out watersports on a luxury Caribbean island owned by Richard Branson, the Virgin chief said on Tuesday.
The former US leader and his wife Michelle Obama visited Moskito Island, in the British Virgin Islands, after handing over the presidency to his successor Donald Trump.
Photos published on Branson's blog show Obama smiling on board a speed boat and wearing a helmet and goggles as he tries out kitesurfing.
"Being the former president of America, there was lots of security around, but Barack was able to really relax and get into it," the British billionaire wrote.
Obama had been stopped by his security detail from doing watersports during his presidency, Branson said.
Two days were dedicated to teaching Obama how to kitesurf from the beach, "as if going back to being a child again" according to his host.
Branson bought Moskito Island in 2007 and has since built a luxury estate which can host 22 guests, according to the resort's website.
Immediately after leaving the White House on January 20, the Obamas flew to California for a short holiday in Palm Springs.
In his final press conference as president, Obama said he was looking forward to spending time with his family after leaving office.
"I want to do some writing, I want to be quiet a little bit and not hear myself talk so darn much. I want to spend precious time with my girls," he said.

Traveling on a budget? How to avoid overspending
MANILA, Philippines - Traveling has never been more accessible and affordable than now. With budget airlines opening routes to a host of new destinations and with new promotions being launched almost weekly, traveling to exotic destinations has become an activity for families or friends to look forward to.
There are, however, several pitfalls that you can unwittingly fall for that can easily bring up your travel costs. This is why careful planning is important every step of the way.
Here are some tips to ensure that you do not bust your budget next time you go on vacation:
Plan in advance.
Advance booking allows you to get the lowest prices for flights and hotels. Typically, rates are at their lowest during off peak seasons. Check with your airline for these dates, which are usually not clustered around holidays. Consider traveling on weekdays, since rates are often higher during weekends. Compare rates and don’t be afraid to haggle if needed.
Allow for flexibility.
While it is tempting to snap up the low-priced but non-reimbursable tickets you see, be very realistic about your schedules. Are you 100% sure that you can take a week off during your company’s budget season? What if your kids’ semestral break is suddenly moved? So many low priced tickets end up unused because they were bought in haste. If you are not sure about your schedules, consider looking at tickets with rebooking options. They may cost more at the outset, but they might be more appropriate for your needs.
Study your transportation options.
Red-eye flights may give you considerable savings, but these may be negated when you are forced to pay for expensive transfers at odd hours and have to book an extra night in a hotel. Similarly, a low priced hotel may be located in such a remote place that you would have to pay so much to get there. Check all these details before finalizing your ticket and hotel purchase. There are many tips from real travelers online who can tell you about transfers and important details that invariably cost money. Look at bus, train and shuttle schedules to determine your best options.
Pay attention to foreign exchange rates and fees.
It’s tempting to walk into a money exchange shop in the middle of the flea market, but these could cost you a lot. Instead, know your options in advance so that you can have your money exchanged into the local currency at competitive rates. Sometimes, it turns out cheaper to use your international credit card to make local purchases because you are charged the exact amount with no worries about counting the change.
Go easy on the internet and text messaging.
Before you post those photos on your favorite networking site, check out your data roaming usage and rates. So many travelers get the shock of their lives when they are charged thousands of dollars in roaming fees by their service providers. Remember that roaming charges apply even when you are merely answering overseas calls, or even when you are making local calls. Text messaging rates may cost a fortune in your destination, so be mindful.
Get local knowledge.
It’s always good to consult locals on just about everything you need. They sometimes offer valuable information than tourist guides and online sites. They can tell you the best routes to take, restaurants to try, and places where you can get great shopping finds. If you can, have a local accompany you when you go to the market or when shopping. Hotel clerks, doormen, and even cab drivers also offer a wealth of information that tourists should find useful.
Don’t ignore freebies.
There are many freebies that you should not ignore – free shows, free transfers, free entrance to tourist attractions, even cookies and drinks at some destinations. All these could add up to considerable savings. Use mileage points when you can for tickets or to get upgrades.
Check out promotions and packages.
You can get amazing discounts when you buy packaged tours. Don’t buy these in haste from online hawkers without looking at the fine print and without verifying the information though. It is best to go with reputable groups. Check out the packages offered by credit card companies – you might even be able to pay for your vacation through monthly installments!
In the end, by being an informed tourist, you can save both money and time. Information is a most valuable tool. Make sure you have pertinent information you need — from fees you will be paying, to the exchange rates, to local weather.
Mistakes due to ignorance — like packing summer outfits when it’s winter in your destination, or buying an outrageously priced shirt because you don’t know the exchange rate — can be costly, especially when you’re far from home and in the middle of a tourist trap.
