German grandma builds wheelchair ramps from Lego

HANAU, Germany - Faced with rows of inaccessible shops and cafes, wheelchair user Rita Ebel has devised a low-tech high-fun solution - ramps made of Lego.

"For me, it is just about trying to sensitize the world a little bit to barrier-free travel," Ebel said in the German town of Hanau. She has been using a wheelchair since she was involved in a car accident 25 years ago.

"Anyone could suddenly end up in a situation that puts them in a wheelchair like it did me," the 62-year-old grandmother said.

Helped by her husband, Ebel often spends two to three hours a day building the made-to-order ramps which contain several hundred of the small plastic bricks stuck together with up to eight tubes of glue.

The bright colors stand out in town centers, she said.

"Nobody just walks past a Lego ramp without taking a look. Whether it's children who try to get the bricks out or adults who take out their mobile phones to take pictures," she said.

Local businesses are also enthusiastic.

"It's a brilliant idea," said Malika El Harti, who got a ramp for her hair salon. "Everyone who walks past is happy about the ramps. Finally, you can see from afar that you can get in here without any problems."

Reliant on donations, the biggest challenge is getting hold of bricks, said Eber, as many families can't bear to part with them.

The idea is even catching on abroad. Eber, who also has a part-time job, has sent ramp building instructions to Austria and Switzerland and there is interest from Spain and a school in the United States.

Toyota to recall 3.4 million vehicles worldwide, air bags may not deploy in crashes

WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp said Tuesday it would recall 3.4 million vehicles worldwide because of an electronic defect that could result in air bags not deploying in crashes.

The recall, which includes 2.9 million US vehicles, covers 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles and is tied to a report of one fatal crash.

The vehicles may have an electronic control unit that does not have adequate protection against electrical noise that can occur in crashes, which could lead to incomplete or non-deployment of the air bags. It could also impede the operation of seat-belt pretensioners.

In April, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) expanded a probe into 12.3 million potentially defective air bags covering a number of automakers, including the vehicles Toyota is recalling.

NHTSA said in April it had identified two frontal crash events, including one fatal crash "involving Toyota products where (electrical overstress) is suspected as the likely cause" of air bags not deploying. Both involved newer Corolla cars.

NHTSA said the air bags under investigation were installed in more than 12 million vehicles from 2010 through 2019 sold by Toyota, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, Honda Motor Co , Hyundai Motor Co, Kia Motors Corp and Mitsubishi.

They were equipped with an air bag control unit initially produced by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp, which is now owned by ZF Friedrichshafen.

In total, NHTSA said as many as 8 deaths could be tied to the issue.

Hyundai, Kia and Fiat Chrysler previously issued recalls for more than 2.5 million vehicles with the TRW air bag control units in question that might not deploy in crashes.

When it recalled nearly 2 million vehicles for air bag non-deployments in 2016, Fiat Chrysler said it had reports of three deaths and five injuries that might be related to the defect.

Hyundai and Kia ultimately recalled more than 1 million vehicles for air bag non-deployment concerns in 2018. Hyundai and Kia in 2018 said they had reports of four deaths and six injuries in North America tied to the issue.

Toyota dealers will install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness if needed.

Toyota declined to say how many deaths or injuries have been tied to the defect. Toyota will notify vehicle owners of the recall by mid-March.

BTS member Jungkook causes minor car accident

MANILA -- Jeon Jungkook, the youngest member of the K-pop boy band BTS, admitted to committing a traffic law violation after he was involved in a car accident last week, his agency BigHit Entertainment said in a statement.

While driving his car, the 22-year-old K-pop star had a “minor collision with another vehicle due to his own mistake,” according to the BigHit statement translated and published Monday by the Korean entertainment website Soompi.

The police have yet to close the case so details surrounding the incident cannot be revealed, according to BigHit.

“Jungkook and the victim did not sustain any major injuries,” the statement added.

After the accident, Jeon admitted to committing a traffic law violation, underwent police questioning, and settled with the victim, said BigHit.

Jeon debuted in 2013 as a member of the septet BTS, which has become one of the most popular K-pop acts in recent years, gaining a massive global following.

Drunk driver sentenced to life in crash that killed Pinoy girl, grandma

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The driver of the car that slammed into a minivan that killed a Filipina girl and her grandmother in 2016 has been sentenced to life in prison.

Cheyenne Wyllie of Springville, California ran a stop sign before hitting the Espinosa family’s minivan in Tulare County, killing 69-year-old Angelita Espinosa and her 10-year old granddaughter Jamie. It also left George Espinosa, the girl's father, severely injured.

“Well, she was crying. But for me, to be remorseful you have to acknowledge that you did something wrong. I hope she learns to realize that what she did is really devastating and hopefully learn from it," said Charlotte, George's widow who also survived the crash.

The Espinosa family were on their way home from a trip to Yosemite National Park when the incident happened.

“We are trying to get by every day. It’s still hard to wake up every day without your mom, your daughter,” said Charlotte.

Investigation had found that Wyllie was driving under the influence, with a .21-percent blood alcohol content.

Charlotte said her husband had to stop working because he still has to go through a number of surgeries.

“The effects of what she did to my husband will be [for a] lifetime…we’ll be spending for his medicines, he is disabled right now, the loss of income for both of us is too much,” she added.

The last three years has been a nightmare for her and her family going back and forth to the hospital as well as to court. But she said her faith in the US justice system has been fully restored.

“I believe, in what we went through, it has strengthened my faith in the justice system. Nobody can elude justice. I’m so thankful for the DA (District Attorney) in Tulare [that] processed our case as a crime and not just as an accident because drunk driving is indeed a crime and is a preventable crime. It can be life-altering, it can be life-ending for some just like what happened to us,” she said.

Fil-Am hit by drunk driver in New Jersey dies, is laid to rest

WESTFIELD, New Jersey - A Filipino-American who died 2 days after a drunk driver hit his car was laid to rest in New Jersey on Monday.

Michael Sot, 20, was making sure his friends got home safe only to be hit head on by a drunk driver last Dec. 2.

The driver, 22-year-old David Lamar, crossed over the double center line and crashed into Sot’s car. The accident also injured 7 others.

Lamar survived and was charged with vehicular homicide, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

"I want the other guy to know how he affected everyone and I want him to know how good of a kid he took out in the world. I have other fraternity brothers still in the hospital right now, unconscious, and I want him to see that too," said Sot’s best friend, Giancarlo Santo.

For many of Sot’s friends, he was not only a former star football player and an outstanding student, he was someone who put others first.

"He might be gone now, but like now, pieces of him live in every one of us and I think we just need to do our best job to carry out what things Mike would have done to people if he was here, because it’s the only way he could live on now,” Santo said.

More than $73,000 dollars has been raised at this time through a GoFundMe page to help the Sot family and other victims of the car crash.

Another GoFundMe page called TCNJ Car Accident Recovery Fund has raised more than $120,000. The money raised will be given to each family affected by the crash.

Fil-Am college student dies of injuries from car accident

A Filipino-American college student died from his injuries two days after a car driven by an impaired driver crashed into their vehicle.

What started out to be a fun Sunday night out for 20-year-old Filipino-American Michael Sot and his friends turned tragic.

Sot, a sophomore math major at the College of New Jersey, was the designated driver that night.

The impaired driver, 22-year-old David Lamar, crossed into the oncoming lane and struck Sot’s vehicle.

Lamar was charged with vehicular homicide, as well as seven counts of second-degree assault by auto in connection with the 2 a.m. crash near the college campus.

College officials said Sot had six passengers. Four of them are students who sustained injuries.

On Tuesday night, hundreds of students held a vigil honoring Sot, saying he always wanted to do things right and keep people around him safe. It was no surprise to them that he offered to be the designated driver on the night of the crash.

In the last three days alone, a GoFundMe account set-up by a campus fraternity for the Fil-Am victim and his passengers has raised over $100,000.

Taxi plows into Moscow crowd including soccer fans, injuring 8

MOSCOW - A taxi drove into a crowd of pedestrians near Moscow's Red Square on Saturday, injuring 8 people including 2 Mexicans in the city for the soccer World Cup which Russia is hosting, officials and eyewitnesses said.

The incident took place as residents and visiting soccer fans thronged the center of Moscow on a balmy summer evening, a short distance from the Kremlin.

Moscow's traffic management authority said the taxi driver had a driver's licence issued in Kyrgyzstan, a mainly Muslim ex-Soviet republic. It cited the driver, who was in police custody, as saying he had not driven into the crowd on purpose.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a post on Twitter: "There was an unpleasant incident with a taxi. The driver lost control of the vehicle."

The city's police said they had opened a criminal investigation into a suspected violation of the traffic code.

Eight people were hurt and had been taken to hospital, Moscow city's healthcare department said in a statement. It said 7 were in a satisfactory condition, while one woman was seriously hurt.

The Mexican embassy in Moscow said 2 Mexican women had been lightly injured. Also among those hurt were a Ukrainian and 2 Russian citizens, Russia's TASS news agency quoted a source in the emergency services as saying.

Video of the incident posted on social media showed the yellow Hyundai taxi pull sharply out of a line of stationary traffic, accelerate and mount the narrow pavement, which was packed with pedestrians.

The vehicle drove for about 10 meters along the pavement, bowling over pedestrians, with some of them being carried along on the bonnet of the car.

The taxi came to a halt after hitting a traffic sign. As bystanders tried to pull open the driver's side door, the driver, dressed in black trousers and black T-shirt, jumped out and sprinted away.

More bystanders chased after him and could be seen trying to tackle him to the ground as the footage ended.

MEXICO SOCCER MATCH

A witness told Reuters that some of the people hit were wearing Mexican team colors. Mexico take on Germany on Sunday in their first World Cup match at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium, and thousands of Mexican fans are in the Russian capital.

A second witness at the scene told Reuters about the driver of the taxi: "He was pulled out of the vehicle, he ran off but bystanders apprehended him. He was shouting: 'It wasn't me'."

Another witness, Viktoria Geraimovich, said she called the emergency services on her mobile phone.

Describing the actions of the driver, she said: "He ran into a group of Mexicans. There were shouts, moans. He was only stopped because he hit a traffic sign."

"Someone gave him a punch in the face. He stayed in the car, people came up to him, said what are you doing, punched him in the face, he opened the door and tried to run away."

"It's scary that it was in the center (of Moscow) and I was right opposite," she said.

Moscow's traffic management authority said the driver was not drunk and Interfax news agency cited a source saying there was no alcohol in his blood.

The same source told Interfax the driver said he had fallen asleep at the wheel and accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal. The driver also said he had worked all night and that he tried to run away because he was scared, TASS agency cited an emergency source as saying.

The same source told TASS that a court will hold a sentencing hearing on Monday.

Authorities have vowed a safe soccer World Cup, which Russia is hosting for the first time ever. It is taking place in 11 cities until July 15.

In central Moscow, authorities have installed heavy concrete blocks across the entrances to pedestrianized areas following a spate of incidents in European cities in which vehicles were used to mow down people.

The US State Department on Friday updated its travel advice on Russia, saying terrorist groups were plotting attacks.

"Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities," the travel advice stated.

DRIVER'S LICENCE

The Moscow traffic authority posted on Twitter a copy of what it said was the taxi driver's licence. It gave his name as Chingiz Anarbek Uulu and said he was born on April 22, 1990.

It gave his birthplace as the town of Kochkor-Ata in Kyrgyzstan, near the border with Uzbekistan.

An account on Russian social media platform Odnoklassniki for someone with the same name and date of birth was last updated 2 years ago.

The last video he posted on his page depicted chapter 82 of the Koran, Islam's holy book, which discussed judgment day. There was nothing on the page to suggest any links to, or sympathies with, Islamist militant groups.

People walking around in central Moscow on Saturday evening said they were aware of the taxi incident, but it did not put them off spending time in the city. The streets were packed with people listening to street musicians perform, or sitting at pavement cafes.

"We're not scared but disappointed," said Youseff Fraige, 27, from Monterrey, Mexico.

"We didn't expect something like this to happen in a place like this. It could happen anywhere in the world, but that it happens here in Moscow, in the middle of the World Cup, it's shocking for us."

Venus Williams will not be charged in Florida fatal accident: report

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Tennis star Venus Williams will not face any criminal charges in relation to a June fatal traffic accident she was involved in near her Florida residence, the Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported on Wednesday, quoting police.

The driver of a car that struck Williams' SUV in an intersection was also not charged, after Palm Beach Gardens police determined that neither violated the right-of-way, the newspaper reported. Palm Beach Gardens police and city clerk did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Police had initially said Williams was to blame for failing to yield the right-of-way.

But by July, Palm Beach Gardens police said video evidence had surfaced that showed that Williams entered the intersection lawfully, and that a car not involved in the collision forced Williams to stop in the intersection. The traffic light changed, and a sedan that struck Williams' SUV had a green light.

Jerome Barson, 78, who was a passenger in a sedan that collided with the SUV Williams was driving, died 13 days after the June 9 accident. His wife, Linda Barson, 68, was driving the sedan.

The Barson family has filed a wrongful death suit against Williams. Calls to attorneys for both parties were not immediately returned on Wednesday evening.

Pinay dies in collision after marking 10th year in US

A 21-year old Filipina was killed by a suspected drunk driver Sunday night, after celebrating her 10th anniversary of immigrating to America with her family.

Reports say Sonoma State University student Paulette Quiba was killed in a head-on collision while on her way home to Rohnert Park.

The crash happened 45 minutes after Quiba said goodbye to her family at a Concord restaurant where they were celebrating.

California Highway Patrol officers arrested 35-year old Santa Rosa man Logologoa Taumaloto Tevaseu on suspicion of murder and two drunk driving charges.

Tevasue had a previous drunk driving conviction in 2012.

Three other people were hurt in the collision that killed Quibo. They were taken to a nearby hospital with minor and moderate injuries.

Venus Williams involved in car crash that led to fatality

Former world number one tennis player Venus Williams was involved in a two-car crash on June 9 at a Florida intersection that resulted in the death of a male passenger in the other vehicle, her attorney said on Thursday.

Williams's attorney Malcolm Cunningham denied the player was at fault in the accident after media outlets, citing a police report, said she had run a red light.

"Ms. Williams entered the intersection on a green light," Cunningham said in a statement about the accident, which happened near Williams' home in Palm Beach Gardens.

"The police report estimates that Ms. Williams was traveling at 5 miles per hour when Mrs. Barson crashed into her. Authorities did not issue Ms. Williams with any citations or traffic violations," he said.

He expressed condolences to the man's family and said he had no reason to believe the accident would impact 37-year-old Williams' plans to compete in Wimbledon, which begins next week in England.

"This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one."

"I don't have any information that indicates she is not playing Wimbledon," he said.

TMZ Sports, which first reported on the accident, said the police report claims Williams was at fault and identifies the deceased as 78-year-old Jerome Barson, who died 14 days after the accident from his injuries.

The Palm Beach County medical examiner's website shows that a Jerome Barson died on June 22.

An attorney for the Barson family did not return a call for comment.

Williams is currently ranked number 11 in the world and seeded 10th at the Wimbledon, which she has won five times.

Uber suspends self-driving car program after Arizona crash

Uber Technologies Inc suspended its pilot program for driverless cars on Saturday after a vehicle equipped with the nascent technology crashed on an Arizona roadway, the ride-hailing company and local police said.

The accident, the latest involving a self-driving vehicle operated by one of several companies experimenting with autonomous vehicles, caused no serious injuries, Uber said.

Even so, the company said it was grounding driverless cars involved in a pilot program in Arizona, Pittsburgh and San Francisco pending the outcome of investigation into the crash on Friday evening in Tempe.

"We are continuing to look into this incident," an Uber spokeswoman said in an email.

The accident occurred when the driver of a second vehicle "failed to yield" to the Uber vehicle while making a turn, said Josie Montenegro, a spokeswoman for the Tempe Police Department.

"The vehicles collided, causing the autonomous vehicle to roll onto its side," she said in an email. "There were no serious injuries."

Two 'safety' drivers were in the front seats of the Uber car, which was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, Uber said in an email, a standard requirement for its self-driving vehicles. The back seat was empty.

Photos and a video posted on Twitter by Fresco News, a service that sells content to news outlets, showed a Volvo SUV flipped on its side after an apparent collision involving two other, slightly damaged cars. Uber said the images appeared to be from the Tempe crash scene.

When Uber launched the pilot program in Pittsburgh last year, it said that driverless cars "require human intervention in many conditions, including bad weather." It also said the new technology had the potential to reduce the number of traffic accidents in the country.

The accident is not the first time a self-driving car has been involved in a collision. A driver of a Tesla Motors Inc Model S car operating in autopilot mode was killed in a collision with a truck in Williston, Florida in 2016. A self-driving vehicle operated by Alphabet Inc's Google was involved in a crash last year in Mountain View, California, striking a bus while attempting to navigate around an obstacle.

The collision comes days after Uber's former president Jeff Jones quit less than seven months after joining the San Francisco-based company, the latest in a string of high-level executives who have departed in recent months.

In February, Alphabet's Waymo self-driving car unit sued Uber and its Otto autonomous trucking subsidiary, alleging theft of proprietary sensor technology.

Royals pitcher Ventura dies in car accident

LOS ANGELES -- Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura died Sunday after a car accident in his native Dominican Republic, the Major League Baseball team confirmed in a statement.

Ventura, 25, a member of the Royals pitching rotation during their 2015 World Series win, died early Sunday, the team said.

No details of the accident were immediately available.

Ventura's death came on the same day that former major league player Andy Marte died in a separate car crash, also in the Dominican Republic, according to a statement by his management company on Twitter.

"Our prayers right now are with Yordano's family as we mourn this young man's passing," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said in a statement.

"He was so young and so talented, full of youthful exuberance and always brought a smile to everyone he interacted with. We will get through this as an organization, but right now is a time to mourn and celebrate the life of Yordano."

Ventura, who made his MLB debut in 2013, enjoyed a break out season in 2014, going 14-10.

He forged a reputation as a power pitcher, hurling a 96.2 miles per hour fastball in 2014, the second fastest in the league. Overall he had a 38-31 record at Major League level.

Team-mates and fellow professionals took to Twitter on Sunday to express their condolences to Ventura.

"I love you Ace. I don't know what to say other then I'm going to miss you a lot," Royals pitcher Mike Moustakas wrote.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer added: "Tragedy has no bias, people. Please, please be safe out there. Condolences to the Ventura family. #RIP Yordano, loved watching you throw."

Archer's Tampa Bay team-mate David Price lamented the loss of Ventura at the nascent stage of his professional career.

"What terrible news this morning! RIP Yordano. This kid was so talented and was only scratching the surface. Condolences to his family," Archer wrote.

Several players paid joint tribute to Ventura and Marte, 33, who spent nearly a decade in Major League Baseball before signing with the KT Wiz in South Korea for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Marte broke into the Majors in 2005 with the Atlanta Braves before being traded to the Cleveland Indians the following year.

"My heart goes out to the family & friends of #RIPAndyMarte #RIPYordanoVentura...Sad day for the baseball community. They'll be missed," wrote Washington Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton.

The dual fatalities come just four months after the baseball world was left in shock by the boating accident death of Miami Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez at the age of 24.

Oregon woman held in Las Vegas Strip sidewalk rampage

LAS VEGAS - An Oregon woman who plowed her car into pedestrians on a crowded Las Vegas Strip sidewalk on Sunday evening, killing one person and injuring at least 35 others, was homeless and had been living in her sedan with her toddler, police said on Monday.

Lakeisha N. Holloway, 24, gave herself up to officers a short distance from the scene of the carnage after parking her car and telling a valet to call 911, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joe Lombardo told a news conference.

Surveillance video from the scene supports the police assertion that Holloway drove into pedestrians as "an intentional act," Lombardo said.

He told reporters Holloway made a statement to police explaining her motive. He declined to relate what she said, other than that the incident did not appear to be a militant attack.

U.S. law enforcement has been on heightened alert since 14 people died in a Dec. 2 shooting massacre in San Bernardino, California, by a married couple inspired by Islamic extremists.

Sunday's incident occurred as the Miss Universe beauty pageant was underway at a nearby hotel.

The scene unfolded with Holloway repeatedly driving a 1996 Oldsmobile into pedestrians on the crowded walkway, banging into newspaper stands and poles, Lombardo said.

Bystanders pounded on the car window and tried to open the door in a futile attempt to stop her, he said.

Justin Cochrane, a tourist who was having dinner on The Strip, told CNN the sedan, its windshield cracked, barreled past him. He said the driver then swerved to avoid a truck before accelerating back onto the sidewalk.

"It was mayhem, and it was very intentional," Cochrane told CNN. "People were flying. This child I saw, literally, hit. And the sound, I'll never forget."

Jessica Valenzuela, 32, of Buckeye, Arizona, an outer suburb of Phoenix, died from injuries after she was struck, the Clark County Coroner-Medical Examiner's office said.

Other victims included visitors from Colorado, Florida, Mexico and Quebec, Canada.

Clark County District Attorney Steven Wolfson said his office planned to bring charges of murder with use of a deadly weapon and other counts against Holloway, who was held without bail.

Holloway, who is from Oregon and had been driving a car registered in Portland, had been homeless and living in the car in Las Vegas for about a week with her 3-year-old daughter, Lombardo said. The child was in the car when Holloway drove into the pedestrians.

University Medical Center was treating three patients listed as critical and two in serious condition, spokeswoman Danita Cohen said in an email. An 11-year-old was among the injured, she said.

Holloway's child, who was unhurt in the incident, is in protective custody, Lombardo said.

The sheriff said investigators were trying to piece together Holloway's background.

In the spring of 2012 Holloway received an award from a career-mentoring nonprofit in Portland for being a role model for high school students, according to The Skanner, a community website and newspaper published in the Pacific Northwest.

The story recounts Holloway describing her mother as having "turned to alcohol, leaving Lakeisha to fend for herself."Holloway was homeless during her freshman year in high school, according to the newspaper, but had since graduated.

On her Facebook page, Holloway indicated that she had studied at Portland Community College.

Jon Jones reinstated to UFC

Former UFC champion Jon Jones has been formally reinstated to the UFC roster after serving a suspension for figuring in a hit-and-run accident involving a pregnant woman.

Jones was arrested last April 27 after running a red light in a rented SUV and causing a three-car collision in Albuquerque. The former light heavyweight champion pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of the accident.

Jones was eventually granted a discharge on condition that he will undergo 18 months of supervised probation and 72 charity speaking appearances with children.

He will not be convicted of a felony if he fulfills the conditions of his probation.

"We've made it clear to Jon that this new opportunity to compete in UFC is a privilege and not a right, and that there are significant expectations we have regarding his conduct moving forward," said UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta in a statement posted on MMA Fighting.

"We're happy to read and see reports that he has embraced the terms of his plea agreement and is using this experience to grow and develop as a person."

Jones, for his part, expressed remorse for his actions and vowed that "the best is yet to come."

LOOK: Baron Geisler in car accident

MANILA – Baron Geisler figured in a car accident early Tuesday morning, a DZMM report said.

According to the Traffic Division of Pasig City, the actor was driving a black Fortuner when he got involved in an accident before 4 a.m. Tuesday along Imelda Avenue in Pasig City.

The right portion of Geisler’s SUV was wrecked after it collided with a truck with plate number RJA 151.

Both Geisler’s vehicle and the truck were brought to the Traffic Bureau office of Pasig City for investigation.

While no one suffered injuries from the accident, Geisler was dismayed at the slow response of authorities.

On Instagram, the actor said he waited for over an hour because “the investigator is busy with something else.”

“It's been more than an hour and no Pasig investigator has showed up despite several calls to the police station. A traffic enforcer came and 2 police officers came but they cannot investigate the matter. They are saying that the investigator is busy with something else. I am very disappointed at the response I am getting in this emergency situation,” he said.

Geisler claimed that he was driving through Karangalan in Pasig City when a speeding 16-wheeler truck hit his vehicle.

Before the incident happened, the actor said he just came from work and that his taping got packed up a little past 3 a.m. - report from Johnson Manabat, DZMM

'Beautiful Mind' mathematician John Nash killed in car crash

NEW YORK, United States - Nobel Prize-winning US mathematician John Nash, who inspired the film "A Beautiful Mind," was killed with his wife in a New Jersey car crash.

Nash, 86, and his 82-year-old wife Alicia were riding in a taxi on Saturday when the accident took place, State Police Sergeant Gregory Williams told AFP.

"The taxi passengers were ejected," Williams said, adding that they were both killed.

The Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) mathematician is best known for his contribution to game theory -- the study of decision-making -- which won him the Nobel economics prize in 1994.

His life story formed the basis of the Oscar-winning 2001 film "A Beautiful Mind" in which actor Russell Crowe played the genius, who struggled with mental illness.

"Stunned... my heart goes out to John & Alicia & family. An amazing partnership. Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts," Crowe said on Twitter.

Ron Howard, who won the Oscar for best director for the film, tweeted that "it was an honor telling part of their story."

Nash's life took a sharp turn in early 1959 when he began suffering from "mental disturbances" that caused him to resign his faculty position at MIT.

The schizophrenic delusions would end up affecting not only his career but also his marriage to Alicia, whom he wed in 1957.

The couple divorced in the early 1960s, but remained in contact and remarried decades later in 2001. By the time Nash received his Nobel Prize, his delusions had decreased.

"I am still making the effort and it is conceivable that with the gap period of about 25 years of partially deluded thinking providing a sort of vacation, my situation may be atypical," Nash said in an autobiographical description, written at the time of his Nobel Prize award in 1994.

"It did happen that when I had been long enough hospitalized that I would finally renounce my delusional hypothesis and revert to thinking of myself as a human of more conventional circumstances and return to mathematical research."

Earlier this month, Nash and mathematician Louis Nirenberg received Norway's prestigious Abel Prize for their contributions to the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) and its applications to geometric analysis.

Nash's 'achievements inspired generations'

"John's remarkable achievements inspired generations of mathematicians, economists and scientists who were influenced by his brilliant, groundbreaking work in game theory," Princeton president Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement Sunday.

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis tweeted that "reading your work was inspirational. Meeting you, and spending time together, was an unearned bonus. Farewell John Nash Jr."

Nash was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on June 13, 1928 to John, an electrical engineer, and his wife, Virginia, a former school teacher.

He went on to study mathematics at what is now Carnegie Mellon University and received a graduate degree from Princeton, where he said he first became interested in game theory.

Nash and his wife were involved in the deadly crash at 4:30 pm (2030 GMT) on the New Jersey Turnpike near the township of Monroe, after the taxi the couple was riding in attempted to pass another vehicle, lost control and struck a guard rail and another car.

US media reported that Nash and his wife were possibly not wearing seatbelts at the time.

The taxi driver was airlifted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A passenger in the other car was taken to the hospital with neck and back pain, said Williams, the police sergeant.

Takata airbag victim's husband held dying baby for 10 mins

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - The widower of a pregnant Malaysian woman who died in a freak car accident in Borneo last year after her neck was pierced by a metal shard from a faulty Takata airbag held their dying daughter in his arms for 10 minutes as the prematurely delivered infant's life sapped away.

According to 41-year-old Welhelmo Rodriguez Caido, doctors performed an emergency operation to save their unborn baby girl after the Honda City car driven by his wife crashed head-on with another car in Malaysia last July, fatally injuring her, but the infant was in critical condition and died two days later.

"Imagine, two lives died in my arms. My wife died in my arms, and then my baby also," Caido said in an interview with Kyodo News in Kuala Belait, a quiet oil town in the sultanate of Brunei where he works as an electrician on offshore oil rigs.

The deaths of 43-year old Law Suk Leh and the baby set off a global alarm on the danger of defective airbags.

Caido said his daughter did not open her eyes or cry like other newborns and had to depend on a ventilator to breathe, as her heart became weaker and weaker.

Recalling the agonizing moment when the doctor decided to take his baby off the ventilator and let her die naturally, he said, "The doctor checked her heart, and it was still OK. Then I talked with her for about 10 minutes, and then the doctor again checked her heart. The third time, the doctor said, 'She's passed away already.'"

"At least I still had time to talk to her. I said to her, 'You have to take care of your mummy. Mummy will take care of you there. You are in good hands in heaven,' and then, 'Maybe one day we will meet again in the second life,'" he recalled in the interview, sometimes stopping as he was overwhelmed by sadness.

The accident happened just about two weeks before his wife was due to give birth to their second child in mid-August. The couple had driven from their home in Brunei to visit her parents in Sibu in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. They planned to then travel to Sarawak's capital Kuching so that his wife could give birth there.

The couple had arrived in Sibu on Friday after a six-hour drive from Brunei. He recalled dyeing his wife's hair on Sunday morning. "I bought a very nice hair dye for her, because I told her, 'Mummy, since our age is like this already, we need to cover it up.' She was very, very happy."

They decided to leave behind their 7-year-old son with her parents to attend a church service that afternoon. After attending the service, they went to the mall to shop for their baby.

"We had ice cream at the mall. Actually, it was like a date since it was just the two of us, as we did not bring our son. It was very normal. We just talked about our baby."

As they were heading back to the house of his parents-in-law with his wife at the wheel, their car collided with another car at an intersection.

"As far as I remember, we had a green light, and our speed was just normal. There was a car coming from our right. It made a right turn," he recalled, prompting him to shout "Mummy! Car!"

He fainted for a moment and when he became conscious, he found her unconscious with a lot of blood flowing from her neck.

Not wanting to wait for an ambulance, he sought help from bystanders. A stranger offered his car and they drove toward a hospital. "At that time, I didn't know whether my wife was still alive or not," he said.

While on the way to hospital, they were met an ambulance and his wife was transferred to it.

"When we brought her from the car, I could see that her mouth was still moving...But the hospital was very far -- too far -- away from the site of our accident."

At the hospital, a doctor told him they had to remove the baby in an effort to save her, and a few minutes later he was told his wife had passed away.

He only came to know later that she died from injuries caused to her neck by the metal shard from the airbag. "The postmortem confirmed that it was from the airbag...I said I don't want to see the thing that killed her."

"The airbag is supposed to save life in the case of emergency, but why is it the opposite? It killed two lives. If you see the picture of the car, it (the collision) was not so serious."

In November, Takata Corp. said in a statement that Honda Motor Co. had filed recall notifications in several countries, including Japan.

"This recall is being conducted because an investigation into an accident that occurred in Malaysia in July 2014 found that the moisture absorption control of the gas generating agent in some driver seat airbags had not been correctly implemented at the time of the manufacture," the statement said.

"As a result...an inflator canister may rupture when the airbag deploys," it said in the statement, which also "offered our deepest condolences to the victim who lost her life in the accident."

Four deaths in four separate accidents in the United States have also reportedly been linked to Takata air bags installed in Honda vehicles.

"Because of what happened to us also...this is a wakeup call for the car companies," Caido said.

"The main thing here is the safety of people. This is about life. Life is fragile. A single thing happened, accident, gone...so you need to be aware of this faulty airbag."

Caido and his wife met in 2004 when he was a 31-year-old dance and aerobics teacher, and she was a 33-year-old music and piano teacher. They married in 2009.

She had bought the secondhand Honda car around 2005. It was in very good condition and never gave them any problem before the accident happened, he said.

"Deep inside my heart I am still aching. It's very painful, it still haunts me, the accident," he said.
